A little more than three years has passed since the inception of the idea of securing
Ukraine’s participation in the renowned Eurovision Song Contest. During the period,
the idea has not only materialized but also surpassed all expectations.
CFC Consulting Company has made an invaluable contribution into bringing the
idea to life. Two years after its first entry into the contest, Ukraine welcomed
Europe and consequently attracted the attention of international mass media.
In this booklet you will find a story about one idea that was implemented
by our company. We present you an outstanding example of setting forth
a goal and accomplishing it under limited timeframes by using innovative
conceptsand out-of-the box solutions. Not only had we strived to bring the
level of the ESC to the utmost level, but also show the possibility of how
numerous art projects can be incorporated in a framework of the contest to
increase its publicity.
It was our goal to use the opportunity of having the contest in Ukraine for improving
the country’s international image. The inspiration and motivation of our team brought
about incredible results that we are happy to share with you.
Eurovision is a popular music event, which has TV audience of millions of people.
It induces thousands to travel and acquire first hand experience. Moreover, the
occasion creates favorable conditions for nation’s economic growth, tourism
development and international promotion. For example, having held the contest in
2002, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia issued a press-release stating that
country’s promotion worldwide was valued at one billion USD. Thus, we shall not
underestimate the effect the contest is yet to have on Ukraine.
Hundreds of people were involved in organizing of the 50th Eurovision Song Contest.
According to experts, Ukraine has managed to prepare and run the contest at a high
level in tremendously short time.
I would like to express our sincere gratitude to National Television Company of
Ukraine and the public organization PORA for their collaboration and support.
I am delighted to present this booklet, a result of the creative and efficient work of our
firm. Remember, at the beginning there was only an idea, a creative inspiration.
Best of luck,

Ukraine in the Eurovision: Who’s Behind It?
Chapter I
Role of CFC Consulting
in the ESC
The idea of securing Ukraine’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest belongs
to Gennadiy Kurochka, the managing partner of CFC Consulting.
While visiting Helsinki in May 2001 Gennadiy witnessed many people
watching performances that were taking place in one of the city’s
concert halls. They gathered, he found out later, to watch the ESC
broadcast on a huge screen. It was a sad fact that Ukraine did not
participate in the contest, although Russia had participated in the
event for quite a while.
CFC Consulting prepared analytical research on the ESC and started negotiations
with the top management of the National Television Company of Ukraine (NTCU).
Mr. Ihor Storozhuk, the president of NTCU, supported the initiative but mentioned
that it was not the first time Ukraine had tried to take part in the ESC and that all
previous attempts had failed.
CFC Consulting recommended members of the Club of Five Continents, the I\IG0
that was the predecessor of the firm as staff for the International Relations Board
of the NTCU.
In spring 2002, after a series of negotiations with the European Broadcasting Union,
NTCU obtained the rights to broadcast the ESC from Tallinn (Estonia) in 2002.
April 2003. Slide from the presentation
for the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine.
The goal to win the contest was set
from the very beginning.
In October 2002, Ukraine officially applied for its participation in the ESC.
In early 2003, the Ukrainian application along with the applications from
Belarus, Albania and Serbia and Montenegro were denied. Only Ukraine continued
negotiations with the EBU. Due to difficult and complicated negotiations based on
the strategy worked out by NTCU and CFC Consulting, Ukraine gained the right to
participate in the ESC according to a new formula of 25+1 (the ESC show format
in 2003 envisioned only 25 entries).
03/24
The first Ukrainian entry in the ESC was Alexander Ponomariev who finished 14th in
ESC 2003 that took place in Riga, Latvia. CFC Consulting forged a partnership with
the artist and gained valuable experience of working at the song contest.
CFC Consulting offered Ruslana and Alexander Ksenofontov (Ruslana’s producer) to
participate in the ESC

Effective media communication strategies are,
and will remain, a crucial factor for success in a
global environment. Thus, the work of CFC with regard
to creating and implementing the ESC 2005 media
communication strategy not only benefited the contest
but also Ukraine as a country, which is only becoming
known by the general public around the world. I
believe that our team has done a great job fulfilling
the responsibility put on us, showing a high level of
professionalism and efficiency.
Eurovision 2004: how did Ukraine win?
CFC Consulting worked out and implemented Ruslana’s PR
and marketing strategy. A non-standard approach to the
relations with the European mass media, great shows and
effective PR tools played a decisive role in the victory of the
Ukrainian entry.

Why Ruslana?
While selecting a Ukrainian entry for the ESC the following criteria were taken into
consideration:
- the popularity of the singer in Ukraine;
- the number of CDs sold domestically;
- the state of the brand promotion;
- the conformity to the ESC format;
- the availability of resources for the appropriate presentation of Ukraine at the ESC;
Additionally, Ruslana’s “Wild Dances” project was regarded as the most
impressive show in 2003. It combined within itself the vivid ethnic elements of
Carpathian Hutsuls and modern rock music. The energy, drive and passion of
“Wild Dances” were the most suitable for the ESC. It is also worth mentioning that
Ruslana’s team is a truly professional one, starting from the Life dancing team to
an impeccable preparation of all promo-materials.

The Eurovision Song Contest was a unique
informational event that made all mass media
representatives write about Ukraine and encouraged
Europeans to obtain information about culture,
the economy as well as the positive changes that
occurred in our country. The level of organization and
staging of the contest gave Ukraine an opportunity to
establish itself as an equal member of the European
informational community. Economic outcomes of the
event are yet to appear. The particular thing
for me is the number of European guests
on the streets of Kyiv.
An aggressive promotion strategy was selected to popularize Ruslana before the
ESC in countries that participated in the contest. Within two months (MarchApril) Ruslana visited 14 countries: Belarus, Malta, Croatia, Latvia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Slovenia, Monaco, Iceland, Estonia, Lithuania, Portugal, Finland,
Spain and Turkey. Since each country has the same number of votes in the
ultimate result of Eurovision (“one country - one vote” principle), small countries
were chosen to organize the promo-tour. In those countries it was much easier
to run an effective mass media campaign and obtain a positive result during the
voting. The exceptions in this case were Spain and Turkey, with the latter being
selected as it was the 2004 host country).

Promotional visit to Iceland (April 9-10, 2004).
The efficiency of the visit and promotion in Iceland before the ESC.
CFC Consulting provided government relations and strategic communications services. Since February
2001 the firm consulted the President of LKS Ltd in his process of applying for the position of Honorary
Consul of Iceland in Ukraine. He was appointed in October 2003.
CFC Consulting renders services to the consulate of Iceland in Ukraine. For example, the company
supported the organization of the visit of Iceland’s Prime Minister, David Oddsson, to Ukraine. A
Business Forum with the participation of business people and high profile officials of both countries was
successfully organized by the firm.
The firm conducted
presentations on Doing
Business in Ukraine in
12 different countries
ranging
from Uruguay
to the Sultanat of Oman!
Ukrainian singer Ruslana was introduced to the Icelandic Prime Minister. A photograph of Ruslana and David
Oddsson appeared in both Ukrainian and Icelandic media.
On April 1, CFC Consulting contacted Mr. Ingi Karlsson of Iceland, who agreed to organize Ruslana’s concert
and her promotion in the country, despite the risks tied to the fact that there was no information about
Ruslana in Iceland.
On April 2-3 - an agreement on Ruslana’s performance in a club and a mall in Reykjavik on April 8th and 9th
was signed.
On April 5-7 - information on Ruslana’s visit to Reykjavik appeared in the two most popular newspapers in
Iceland. An agreement for the shooting of a documentary about Ruslana’s visit was signed.
Great support was received from the Embassy of Iceland in Finland and in particular from the Ambassador’s
wife, Mrs. Bryndis Schram, who had been a prima ballerina and a popular talk show host in Iceland.
April 9 - Ruslana arrives in Iceland with her dancers and CFC Consulting team to Iceland. Interviews with two
TV channels (national television and a commercial channel) are held and Ruslana is aired on the evening
news. Ruslana performs at the local club. Business representatives, as well as a brother and a sister of
Iceland’s Prime Minister come to the performance.
05/24
April 10 - a press conference and a meeting with Icelandic
entrepreneurs take place.
April-May - Ruslana’s music video starts appearing on
television. The song “Wild Dances” is also in rotation on radio.
The documentary about Ruslana was broadcast by the national
television several days before the contest.
May 15 - an Icelandic commentator describes Ruslana as
a friend of Iceland (She is the only one from all the entries
who visited Iceland). Iceland gives Ukraine 12 points! (an
unexpected result of the voting, taking into consideration that
Iceland’s neigbours, Norway and Sweden traditionally collect
their highest scores from Iceland).
Ruslana met David Oddson,
Prime Minister of Iceland.
February 2004
Such a positive attitude by Iceland towards Ukraine was
unheard of in the history of bilateral relations between the
two countries. After the victory, Icelandic National television
broadcast the news about Ruslana receiving the title of People’s
Artist from the President of Ukraine (as domestic news!).

Media relations
Building up effective cooperation with European media has played a key role in achieving Ruslana’s
victory. It is worth mentioning that there were 8-10 people from the Ukrainian team (CFC Consulting,
NTCU and Luxen studio) continuously working with journalists at the press center in Istanbul.
Between May 4 and May 15 over 120 interviews were arranged and held by Ruslana with European
TV channels, radio stations and newspapers.
In addition, Ruslana’s press conferences were regarded as the most professional ones at the ESC
(6 press conferences were held in Istanbul).
PR technologies
There was a number of PR technologies used in Istanbul to increase Ruslana’s popularity. Among the
most effective were the following:
06/24
Journalist Communication. A personal approach was used towards every journalist in order to
organize an interview and provide details on the “Wild Dances” project. Every journalist also received
extensive media kits prepared by Ruslana’s team (a bag, a t-shirt, a bandana, a note book with a logo
and also a demo CD with press releases and photographs, Ruslana’s single Wild Dances and platinum
album Dyki Tantsi as well as materials devoted to Ukraine) Beta cassettes and DVDs were also
distributed to TV channels.
Internet Publicity (www.esctoday.com; www.eurovision.tv) CFC Consulting team has built up personal
contacts with two main ESC Internet resources that ensured a positive and substantial coverage of
Ruslana throughout the contest.
Communicating with the Commentators. One hour before the beginning of the contest’s final special
notes on Ruslana and her relationship to the commentator’s country were distributed.
Minorities Focus. Ruslana called upon Ukrainian society to avoid any kind of discrimination towards
homosexuals. (The main audience of Eurovision are “gay and housewives”). Ruslana’s team was
negotiating with the organizers of a Young homosexuals’ summer camp in the Netherlands regarding
the possibility of Ruslana’s performance at the camp in August 2004. In an article published on
www.esctoday.com Ruslana declared that she believed that the future of Ukrainian integration into
the EU would depend on Ukraine’s adherence to human rights and particularly the rights of sexual
minorities. The news was disseminated by all European newspapers.

of Iceland, took part in the first
Iceland-Ukraine business forum
organized by CFC Consulting

Consul of Iceland in Ukraine

two leaders of the ESC 2004 organized a joint party. The main goal of the joint event
was to draw all the attention away from Ruslana’s key rival - Xandee - Belgium’s entry
who had her party the same night. Russia and Slovenia also had their parties that night.
The party turned out to be more “Ukrainian”, because the audience was cheering for
Ruslana all the way; also a Lithuanian group, Unas and Simona, performed three songs
in support of Ukraine...
Ruslana’s Behaviour. Ruslana’s behavior was natural and sometimes provocative.
Thanks to the talent of improvisation Ruslana managed to draw attention of the
cameras all the time. It was especially employed when communicating with her main
rival, Sakis Rouvas from Greece.
Attracting Camera Attention. Due to Ukrainian cameramen who always circled
around Ruslana wherever she went, we managed to generate a real rush of all cameras
around her.
CFC Consulting organized
over 220 meetings with
government officials worldwide
during the past 3 years!
Appealing to Sport Fans. It is interesting that the colours of Fenerbahche,
the most popular football club in Turkey, are the same as those of the Ukrainian flag. By
saying that she is a fan of Fenerbahche and waving the Ukrainian flag, Ruslana gained
the votes of at least half of the Fenerbahche fans, which accounted for more than 20
million people.
Additional Publicity Through Special Projects. Ukraine together
with some other semi final participants - Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Greece, Macedonia and Malta were invited to the Israeli party
that took place in a studio and was broadcast live to Israel.
On May 13 Ruslana took part in a BBC TV-show. Ruslana, together with entries
from Cyprus, Malta, Denmark, Great Britain and Finland appeared in a 45 minute show
on BBC.
Translation/interpretation. One of the key elements of the PR campaign was
providing professional interpretation of all spoken and written declarations. CFC
Consulting provided simultaneous interpreters who did their job under any condition.
NB: Ruslana’s ratings by the most popular bookmakers were 33-1 at the beginning and
3-1 before the finals. Such a breakthrough was unprecedented in the history of ESC.

proud and happy. Some-as they truly understood

But it works. They have the potential and resources to win.

Manager, CFC Consulting
Professional information support of such a big and popular
event as the Eurovision Song Contest is essential. People
in Europe who cannot come personally to the host country,
want to be aware of what is going on surrounding the event.
Therefore, timely and competent information should be
delivered to journalists and media people all around Europe.
The CFC Consulting team did its best to provide European
mass media with high-quality press releases on hot issues
and fresh news from the ESC.
Each participant of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 will have an
individually designed stage image. The play of light, moving stage
elements and the latest technology special effects during the participants’
performances will create a unique and mysterious show atmosphere that
will be introduced for the first time at Eurovision.
This year’s stage is extremely intelligent, with way more
technological advantages and know-how than ever before. It
contains hundreds of elements that revolve, twist, flip and spin
according to the rhythm and spirit of the music. Sparkling stars
of the romantic night sky can turn into the hot desert sand-dunes
or waterfall splashes in a flash. Every song will have its story, its
unrepeatable sensation and emotion.
“The Rolling Stones would kill for such a stage!” - says Ola Melzig,
Production Manager of Spectra. Spectra has been providing lightning and
broadcasting for the ESC for the last five years and is an obvious leader in
this area.
Sietse Bakker

“A true winner wins the Eurovision Song Contest, no matter
the promotion behind it. However, in the case of Ruslana,
CFC organized a promotion campaign that assured a
relatively unknown singer abroad of an international career
after winning the contest - something in which previous
winners often failed. After this success, CFC managed
to use the knowledge and experience gained as Ruslana’s
promotion partner for the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest
in Kyiv, Ukraine, where the CFC team outshined again in its
dedicated way of working! We consider our tight
cooperation with CFC as
a valuable relationship.”
Ola assures that the anniversary Eurovision 2005 is to become the most
spectacular and impressive Song Contest in its history. Hundreds of
people are working on setting up the 80-ton video and lighting equipment
and designing the stage images and programming the stage for a dazzling
show.
“Stage images have already been chosen for 39 songs of the ESC,”
Ola says as he continues to reveal his secrets. “It’s a surprise
we have prepared for the singers. During the first rehearsal in Kyiv
they are to meet their new stage image: still or moving, soft or hard,
red or green and so on. Such a highly intellectual stage is our know-how
and we are proud to present it in Kyiv.”

The Golden Pectoral
The Golden Pectoral became the main prize from Ukraine to Greece, the country
that won the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. The President of
Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko, presented the Golden Pectoral as an award to the
Greek entry, Helena Papariziou, the winner of the ESC 2005.
The Golden Pectoral aimed to pass on the baton of conducting the ESC to the
winning country, to show the sincere hospitality of the Ukrainian people and
express gratitude for the chance to hold the 50th jubilee song contest in Ukraine.
It is claimed with certainty that the award, with its mystic core concept, has
become a true symbol of Eurovision 2005, as extraordinary and astounding as
the event itself.
The Golden Pectoral award was designed by the best Ukrainian jewelers
working for the Kyiv jewelry factory. The Golden Pectoral has certain elements of
Scythian adornment, and also reminds one of the fern-flower, the symbol of the
Eurovision Song Contest 2005.

the Singing Microphone. The monument, located near the Palats Sportu
(Sport Palace), contained a special launcher, the lines of which totally
corresponded to the contours of the golden award. Festive fireworks were
to start at the moment when the prize was located and the launcher turned
on. This script, though supported by the Secretariat of the President, was
not performed because of technical reasons.
On the day of the ESC finals and the official award ceremony the Golden
Pectoral was presented by Ruslana, the winner of the ESC-2004, during
her official press conference. For the rest of the day the Pectoral was kept
in a special glass case. Thanks to a special magnetic field the Golden
Pectoral was turning, not touching any of the case’s walls. In this way the
visual effect of a mystical, light, almost weightless object was attained. Of
course, it fully corresponded with the creative concept of Eurovision 2005.

Interesting:
The award is made in the image of Scythian pectoral. Scythians
are considered to be the forefathers of Ukrainians; they lived
on the territory of contemporary Southern Ukraine from the 7th
to 3rd centuries B.C. The Scythian pectoral is a masterpiece of
world art jewelry, and resembles a golden breast adornment
of a Scythian king. It was found by chance in 1971 during an
archeological dig of a Scythian kurgan in Eastern Ukraine.
Archeologists at once recognized the high value of the find,
which on many times has been compared with the discovery of
Tutankhamen’s tomb. The Scythian pectoral astounds one with
its beauty and exquisiteness, and is one of the most precious
pieces of art jewelry in centuries.
After the
finals of the ESC 2005
the story of the Golden

award made its way to countries around
the whole world, spreading myths and
surmises. For example, Nation, a Thai media

Monument
to the Singing Microphone
Three days before the ESC finals the Monument to the Singing Microphone
was installed near the Sports Palace, the official Eurovision venue. The
Monument was dedicated to the celebration of the 50th jubilee Eurovision
Song Contest in Ukraine and symbolised the unity of music, modern art and
high technology.
The purpose of this cultural event was to underline the uniqueness and high
level of development ot both modem art and high technologies in Ukraine.
Another important task of the Monument was to spread a positive image of
Ukraine in Europe and the whole world by drawing the attention of national
and international Media to the concept behind the Monument.
It was primarily the location of the Monument (in front of the Sports Palace,
visited then by thousands of people) that fostered the realization
of the main idea of the installation and helped to attract the attention
of journalists and guests of Eurovision 2005 to this masterpiece of
modern art.

Melting of the titanium
The Monument, made of pure titanium, consists of three pillars and slabs and weighs
42 tons. Since ancient times columns were thought to symbolise the connection of the
human world with the universe and infinity. Titanium is a break-through high-tech material,
the production of the monument was a lengthy and complicated technological process involving
seven electro-welding machines. Ukraine is one of the leading countries in the production of
titanium, an extremely durable and comparatively light metal.
Thanks to the special illumination from beneath, the installation astonishes one with the spectre of
colours shimmering on the surface of the titanium pillars and slabs. The daylight and special lighting
at night complement the unique sound of the Monument with all the colours of a rainbow. The
variety of musical tones and the colour of the spectrum are closely related in many traditions, and
this traditional trend is reflected in the folk arts.

At the time of the Monument’s
installation the temperature of its
columns reached 400°C. Due to this reason
it was installed at night, and remained
surrounded by fencing, awaiting
its official opening.

The concept and the outward appearance of the Monument to the
Singing Microphone corresponded to the idea, creative concept and
decoration of the stage of the ESC 2005 (See page 11). The pillars of
the monument complied with the style of the suspended stage columns
that changed their colour due to special lighting. This colour change
depended on the atmosphere of different songs and on the whole created
by the feeling of lightness and dynamism.

Fact:
The monument was produced
in a month by 70 workers,
working in three shifts.
The monument was made in a way that even if a metal object touches it,
the titanium pillar produces light sound vibrations, resembling cosmic
music and unearthly music chords. Each column had it own timbre.
Striking the columns guests of Eurovision consequently composed
a melody of their own gallactic song.
Once installed near the Sports Palace the Monument

was visited by several thousand people, who came to
the rehearsals, semi-final and finals of the song contest.
Representatives of the Media were taking interviews in front
of the Monument; and guests of the ESC met there and took
pictures.
CFC Consulting Company has decided to prolong the life of the project,
making it a symbol of the unification of art and high tech, a human
being and the universe. The monument will travel across Europe and will
become a symbolic part of music festivals, song contests, in particular
the ESC, and other popular music and art projects.

Two exclusive postage stamps were designed and issued in Ukraine in celebration of the 50th jubilee
of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005.
The official ceremony of the presentation of the postage stamps took place two days before the final of
the contest at Ukrainian House on European Square in Kyiv.
Both stamps have two levels of protection. They are covered with special paint that
changes its colour under ultra-violet light. They also contain micro-text that can only
be seen with the help of a magnifying glass.
One of the stamps is dedicated to Ruslana and depicts her smiling face.
The portrait of the famous Ukrainian singer, used for the stamp, was developed
by Vasyl Vasylenko, the chief designer of the project. He used several photographs
of the Wild Dancer and added his own vision of her image and created
a new portrait of the famous Ukrainian singer.
The other postage stamp, dedicated to the Eurovision Song Contest, was created with the
purpose of preserving in history the jubilee Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Ukraine. This
stamp was designed by Mykhaylo llko, of the Stairsfor creative agency, and contains the logo
of the ESC 2005, the symbol of Eurovision in Ukraine.
16/24
Certainly this year at least 200,000 letters with the postage stamps dedicated to the
Eurovision will leave the country on their way to countries of the world, spreading the spirit of
Ukrainian history and beauty.
There is no doubt that these postage stamps will foster the spreading of a positive image of
Ukraine abroad as a country, which succeeded in holding an event, of the scale and responsibility
of the 50th jubilee of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 at the highest level.

A Tribute To the Art
Of Andy Warhol

Selfportrait, 1986
The Andy Warhol Concept of Pop Art: “You watch TV and see Coca-Cola,
and you know that the president drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke and just
think, you can drink Coke too...”
Embodying the vivid streams and trends of pop-art, the Eurovision Song
Contest acquaints the world with highlights of pop-culture. In that same
spirit, EuroClub, the official relaxation venue for the guests and participants
of Eurovision, invited everybody to attend the exhibition, dedicated to one of
the most eccentric high-profile personalities in the history of pop-art.
Andy Warhol is recognised as one of the greatest American pop artists.
He was quite an ardent advocate of gay culture which he promoted during
his life.
One of Andy Warhol’s most important contributions to the history of
contemporary art was his introduction of everyday, vernacular images,
such as soft-drinking bottles, soup cans, packing boxes and newspaper
advertisements, into the language of fine art.
17/24
In one sense, he was doing no more than updating the traditional genre of
still-life in painting. But now, over 30 years after these pop images caused
a sensation in the popular press and in the art world, it is easy to see
that Warhol had a prescient ability to identify the key logos, products and
consumer items not only of American life but also of today’s global society.
What once seemed ephemeral is now ubiquitous.
“Andy Warhol was a true mirror of his time. Having grown up in a working
class neighbourhood, he made his life and art a response to the world as
he saw it. Further, he predicted better than any of his contemporaries what
the future would look like, and thus, we live today in The World according to
Andy,” says Thomas Sokolowski.
Obsessed with portraiture, Warhol’s cinema, paintings and silk-screens
glorify superstars, whether they be cultural icons like Elvis and Jackie
Onassis or his own larger-than-life creations like Nico and Viva.
CFC Consulting expresses special thanks to Thomas Sokolowski, the
director of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA (USA). The museum
supported the idea and provided organizers with materials about Andy
Warhol and several of his images, which were displayed at EuroClub during
Eurovision 2005.

The EuroCamp
Located on the picturesque Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv the EuroCamp functioned during the
week of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005.
Set up near the pedestrian bridge, it offered its residents the spectacular view of the city
centre, with its astounding golden belfries and magnificent pieces of architecture.
The camp was conceived and erected in the spirit of the Orange Revolution.
It provided guests of Eurovision, residing in the camp, with the opportunity to
experience the atmosphere, strength and inspiration of those who took part in the
events that happened on Maydan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square).
The EuroCamp’s main purpose was to give Ukrainians and Europeans a unique
historic chance to meet, spend time together, rally for parties and share their cultures
with new friends. Ukrainian and European guests had the unforgettable opportunity
to grasp the romantic spirit of historical events and experience Ukrainian hospitality
during the celebration of Eurovision in Kyiv.
It successfully blended the attributes of a comfortable camping resort with creative
mind-blowing activities for anyone who wanted to be involved in celebrating the 50th

Organizers of the EuroCamp compiled an interesting and saturated cultural program,
so that the life in the camp was bubbling over all the time. Every day during the week
of Eurovision the camp hosted concerts given by both famous singers and novices.
Anyone interested could dive into the flow of dazzling events of the camp and try
the life of EuroStyle. Crazy parties, discos, contests, horseback riding, paintball
competitions, water balloon battles, the Sand sculpture festival, mini-football
tournaments, yoga master-classes etc - all of that could be experienced in a single
day!
Moreover, not only did the EuroCamp become an international centre, but also the
centre of Ukrainian culture. It was here that the guests of Eurovision were offered
a chance to get better acquainted with Ukrainian traditions and rites, national
peculiarities and hospitality. Guests and residents of the EuroCamp
tasted Ukrainian sweets, learned the skills of Kozak martial arts,

An exhibition of photographs under the title “We, the people of Eurovision...”
was presented to guests and participants of the ESC 2005 on the ground
floor of the Sports Palace, the official venue of the song contest. The official
opening ceremony took place on the day of the semi-final of Eurovision.
The main aim of the exhibition was to present a collection of portrait-type
pictures from every country-participant of the ESC 2005. These portraits
illustrated Europe inhabited by nations made up of people of different skin
colour, hair, eyes, etc. All of them different but yet united by the opportunity
to feel and dream, to empathize and support.
Exhibition.
Sports Palace
The main goal of the photograph exhibition “We, the people of Eurovision”
is to emphasize the role models and the significance of the Eurovision Song
Contest in the unity of the people of Europe. Eurovision, being a popular
music event, unites various people in age and nationality notwithstanding
where they live, which language they speak or the colour of their skin
when it comes to understanding and appreciating music.
19/24
The name of the exhibition “We, the people of Eurovision...” was based on the wellknown words from the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations that begins with
the words “We, the peoples of the United Nations...”
The carefully planned exhibition included notification about the photograph selection
and criteria. Announcement of the event brought great interest and pleasant remarks
from countries-participants. Located on the ground floor of the Sports Palace the
exhibition was visited by numerous guests and delegations. Moreover, participants of
the ESC 2005 got a chance to attend the exhibition themselves.
A qualified jury was invited to evaluate the photographs and announce the winner.
The country winner received a prize together with sincere thanks. The remaining of
the countries were rewarded with certificates of participation.
The innovative idea within the framework of the ESC 2005 caught the attention of
representatives of the foreign Mass Media. Articles about the event could be found in
numerous newspapers, magazines, and on the web pages of various countries.

Eurovision Alley
Eurovision Alley is a monument, dedicated to the jubilee of the Eurovision Song
Contest 2005. It is a composition of the flags of the Eurovision 2005 participant
countries, painted on the upper surface of 39 bronze columns, each one of them
heart-shaped. The flag of the European Union was fluttering over the Alley during
its installation, symbolizing the unity of countries, participating in the Song Contest,
and their European spirit and creative energy.

The official opening of Eurovision Alley took place on the day of the ESC 2005 finals
in front of Ukrainian House.
Eurovision Alley was symbolically placed on European Square,
one of the most beautiful places in Kyiv centre. The favourable location
of the monument fostered both the presence of many people at the Alley and great
attention of thousands of people, passersby, journalists and guests
of Eurovision that it attracted. Each and every guest of Kyiv and of Eurovision 2005
could find their nation’s flag in the heart of hearts of the Ukrainian capital.
Heart-shaped flags became the symbol of the unification of European countries
during such an important event as the 50th Jubilee of Eurovision 2005 in Ukraine. It
is planned that the Alley will remain on European Square forever.

During Eurovision week the program of cultural events
was supplemented by the Kyiv International Graffiti Contest organized
within the framework of EuroCamp. Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv,
in the neighbourhood of the tent camp installed for Eurovision fans
and foreign journalists covering the ESC, was chosen as
the venue for the event.
The Contest officially started right after the opening of EuroCamp, and the
artists began their work straight away. During the week artists from Ukraine
and countries of Europe were creating their pieces side by side, compiling
a huge canvas dedicated to Eurovision. The winners were selected and
awarded the next day after the closing ceremony of the ESC 2005.
The contest aimed to provide an exceptional opportunity for graffiti artists
from all around Ukraine and other European countries to converse, work
together, exchange their professional experience in this popular modern art
form and to develop personal contacts for further cooperation and realization
of joint projects.
Artists were putting their masterpieces on the walls of
an old building in the centre of Trukhaniv Island. They
succeeded in creating a true fairy tale, a visual trip to the
world’s greatest places, out of a grey unattractive wall.

The Graffiti Contest’s slogan “Welcome to Ukraine” was
quite symbolic. It welcomed and encouraged all guests who
came to the ESC 2005 to participate in this multicultural
event, promoting diversity, freedom of expression and
unity of nations.
The venue for the Contest was prepared carefully. Selected
music created an extraordinary atmosphere, important
enough - graffiti is born by spirit and depends on
inspiration. The more creative and cordial the atmosphere
is, the better and more unpredictable the works that are

Modern Art Exhibition
“We - the peoples of Eurovision...
Within the framework of the Song Contest and under the common name “We the
peoples of Eurovision...” the exhibition of modern works of art took place at the
Sports Palace. The exposition was officially opened the day after the opening of
Eurovision and greeted its first visitors.
The exhibition aimed to introduce residents of various countries to the works of
modern art, resembling and reflecting the culture of different nations. Interestingly
enough, residents of the countries and guests had the chance to see the works of
different European countries - different, but united by the power of music, in one
venue. Modern art has many faces, new styles and new means; visitors of the
exhibition could appreciate the variety and enrich their worldview. Art educates
us, and every new style, new word - is a new book to be read.
Every country-participant had an opportunity to present a work of art, symbolizing
the country and giving a precise idea, an impression of its contemporary life.
The order of the arrangement of the works symbolized unity, whereas the
presence of the artists underlined the importance of the event and its
international format.
A jury was invited to select the most extraordinary artwork presented
at the exhibition. Not only was the winner given a certificate, but also
awarded a memorable prize.
Representatives of the Media had an opportunity to attract the attention
of the audience to such an important part of modern life as art. Caught
in the European megapolis, losing impressions in the haste of events,
we still need to remember art and pay attention to the new tendencies it
develops.
