learn about the vault, the archives, the library,
gallery technology, and the exhibitions. Become
a permanent part of Michener exhibitions and
the visitor experience for young audiences.
Earn 18 community service hours. Students
who attend the morning drawing class will
meet up with the Audio Team at noon on
Friday. Students who attended this class in
2015 are welcome to return this summer.
We’re seeking creative and responsible
volunteers in grades 9 through 12 to become
Counselors-in-Training (CITs) at the Michener
Art Museum’s summer camps in 2016.
Volunteering at a Michener camp is a fun way
to spend part of your summer and a great way
to learn about art, education, and art museums.
You can also add valuable community service
experience to your National Junior Honor
Society, National Honor Society, and college
applications. CITs will work with Michener
summer camp staff and gain valuable experience
working with children in preschool through
grade 8 in an arts classroom setting. CITs pay
a $125 program participation fee. Students
accrue service hours depending on scheduling
and availability. Applications available at

In all Michener Art Museum classes, individualized attention, small classes, and master
teachers are hallmarks of exceptional programs that combine learning new skills with
opportunities for creative expression and the development of a personal style. Students will
work in an environment rooted in inspired and supportive instruction, meaningful gallery
experiences, personal observation and imagination. Students will also visit the Museum galleries
regularly, studying artist’s techniques and ideas, and using works of art in our permanent and
special exhibitions as inspiration for their artwork. Join us for an extensive exploration of the arts in our summer programs for students age 5
through grade 12.

enjoy an exhibition of student work in the Education Gallery and classrooms.
• There is a 25% cancellation fee for programs and no refund once the program begins.

Scout groups are invited to join us at the Michener Art Museum to learn about Pennsylvania
Impressionist landscape paintings, celebrate the art of woodworker George Nakashima, take a
mystery prison highlights tour, explore the sculpture garden, see our special exhibitions, draw in the
galleries, and work toward their Visual Arts Badge.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am-4:30 pm, and weekends from noon-5
pm. We are not able to accommodate groups larger than sixty students.
THERE IS ALWAYS MORE AT THE MICHENER
FEES
$6 per Scout includes Museum admission and materials; $9 per Scout includes admission,
materials, and a Michener Scout Arts Patch. Siblings welcome to participate in the workshop
for the same fee. One chaperone for every six students is admitted free; all other chaperones
pay a $12 reduced general admission fee.

Summer Camp directors are invited to call and schedule an individualized program for campers
of all ages at the Michener Art Museum. Campers will learn about Pennsylvania Impressionist
landscape paintings, celebrate the art of woodworker George Nakashima, take a mystery prison
highlights tour, explore the sculpture garden, see our special exhibitions, draw from original works
of art in the Museum, and engage in age appropriate Museum exploration activities.

COMIC BOOK
EXTRAVAGANZA (SC16-3)
June 27-July 1, 1-4pm

Instructor: Andrea Thompson
Students will create a storyboard and develop a
black and white or color comic book based on
an original character in an incredible situation.
They will learn how to tell fantastic stories with
pictures, while learning about form, shading,
perspective, and proportion. Each student will
produce a completed comic book in this class.

COMIC BOOKS, SCI-FI AND
FANTASY (SC16-4)

Develop original ideas, unique comic book
characters, and tell your own stories in this
comic book class for older students. Include
style, mood, setting, expression, interesting
perspectives, and anatomy in your work. Each
student will produce a completed comic book
in this class.

FABRIC DESIGN AND SEWING
1 (SC16-5)
June 27-July 1, 10am-4pm

Instructor: Erin Casey
Incorporate your interest in color and design
while creating art on fabric with permanent
dyes. Use the fabric you design in an outfit
you sew, to be modeled on the last day of
class. Students will also learn to develop
sewing patterns and create unique fashion and
accessory designs. Projects in this level 1 class
will be less complex than projects in the level 2
class, offered in August; students are welcome
to take both classes. Students who took our
fashion classes last summer will discover new
experiences and learn new skills in this class.
Sewing skills are helpful but not necessary.
Families and friends are invited to come 30
minutes before the end of class on Friday to
enjoy an exhibition of student work and a
fashion show. Please bring a sewing machine
to class, if you have one.

This new class is for six year olds who would
like to spend some time with friends their
own age. In this unique program, just for six
year olds, we’ll explore the Museum and art
studio in a unique way – created just for them!

and learning experiences. Students will
discover new and exciting art materials as they
produce original works in drawing, painting,
printmaking, sculpture and collage.

yarns, beads, magazines, clay, and found
objects, students will create beautiful unique
jewelry pieces including necklaces, bracelets,

Explore real and imaginary vehicles where

life. Students will be taken on a special highlights
mystery tour of the Museum during this full day
camp.

Explore the art of working with acrylics,
charcoal, oil pastels, mixed media, and pencil on
canvas in this class that helps students develop
new skills in drawing and painting. Shading,
perspective, color, texture, composition, and
realism will be the focus.

Design and create original stained glass works
of art in this new Michener program. Learn
to create patterns for glass images. Cut, grind,
polish, taper, and solder colored glass to create

Explore working in black and white while
drawing, painting, and printmaking with pen
and ink, brush and ink, acrylics, charcoal,

understanding of the power of black and white

arts, writing, and literature. Work with local
writers and artists while developing new
skills and approaches to your work. Let the
James A. Michener Art Museum’s collection

Join us for an in depth artistic exploration
of children around the world. Learn about
the variety of houses, landscapes, schools,
toys, animals, clothing, food, hobbies, music,
transportation, and more. Find out how kids
around the world are like you, and how they
are different. Create drawings, paintings,
photography, sculpture, pottery, textile arts,
and jewelry. Experience musical and theatrical
forms inspired by children living on every
continent. Hear stories from many different
places. This class will give students a rare
opportunity to see the work of National
Geographic photographer Steve McCurry, most
famous for his “Afghan Girl” taken in 1985. All
are invited to a performance and exhibition
in Michener’s event pavilion on the last day
of camp.

Be inspired by the out of doors while creating
artworks in two and three dimensions. Mountains,
deserts, oceans, cities, fields, rivers, volcanos,

will inspire work with pencils, paint, pastels,
collage, prints, clay, plaster, and more.

Many artists love nature. They find inspiration
in the landscape, by the ocean, at sunrise and
sunset, on snowy mountaintops and sandy
deserts, in the bright sunlight and the darkest
nights. They look across landscape views, and
study tiny details in flowers, rocks, leaves,
and animals. Artists in this class will find their
inspiration in nature for original works in
drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture.

Learn to create mosaics by arranging colored
pieces of stone, tile, mirror, and glass on two
and three-dimensional surfaces. This class is
perfect for the student who will enjoy using
color, intricate pattern, original designs,
and found objects while learning an ancient
art form.

Being five is an exciting and unique time in
the development of children. In this unique
program, just for five year olds, we’ll explore
the Museum and art studio in a unique

Learn to create mosaics by arranging colored
pieces of stone, tile, mirror, and glass in a
wooden frame. This class is perfect for the
student who enjoys working with color,
pattern, found objects, and three-dimensional
creations.
Learn to choose a color scheme, create a variety
of textures, work from photographs and real life,
and create a sense of depth. Develop artistic skills
while drawing and painting using watercolors
and acrylic paints on a variety of surfaces.

Explore a variety of subject matter while
working in the art studio and on easels en
plein air (“in the open air”) in the sculpture
garden. Learn about color mixing, wet and dry
brush techniques, shading, and composition
while creating original drawings and paintings.
Experiment with a variety of techniques on
paper and canvas. Mixed media work will be
incorporated into some lessons.

SCULPTURE 2 (SC16-25)

Students will explore the art of sculpture
while working on a variety of creations of
their own, using assemblage, additive and
subtractive methods, and a variety of unique
3-D materials. They will work with clay, wire,
wood, plaster, found and natural objects and
more to create realistic and abstract threedimensional art.

way through the world of movies. Understand
the artistry that makes your favorite animated
and live action movies come to life. Learn how
artists tell great stories in the movies, and learn
to use your talents to tell some new stories of
your own! Students will be taken on a special
highlights mystery tour of the Museum during
this full day camp.

Students will explore the art of sculpture
while working on a variety of creations of
their own, using assemblage, additive and
subtractive methods, and a variety of unique
3-D materials. They will work with clay, wire,
wood, plaster, found and natural objects and
more to create realistic and abstract threedimensional art.
last summer will discover new experiences
and learn new skills in this class. Families
and friends are welcome to come 30 minutes
before the end of class on Friday to enjoy an
exhibition of student work and a fashion show.
Please bring a sewing machine to class, if
you have one.

Learn to create an original Anime character and
infuse it with personality and flair. Use new
skills and techniques while working with inks,
animation cells, and mixed media to create a
series of unique anime projects.

Master the art of working with acrylics,
charcoal, mixed media, oil pastels, and pencil
on canvas in this class which teaches students
new skills in drawing and painting. Shading,
perspective, color, texture, composition, and
realism will be the focus.

Draw, paint, print, collage and sculpt your way
through a world of imagination. Learn how
shading, color, texture, detail and observation
can help works of art featuring imaginary
characters, scenes, and stories come to life.
Students will be taken on a special highlights
mystery tour of the Museum during this full
day camp.

Develop an understanding of the action,
emotion and movement of Japanese manga
and anime characters. Build skills in character
development, expression, and background
design. Students will create a collaborative
anime book in addition to completing
individual projects in this class. Students who
enjoyed Beginning or Advanced Anime last
summer will expand upon and develop new
abilities in this class.

Learn to create works of art rooted in optical
illusions. Use color, pattern, design, and
imagination to create a sense of movement,
vibration, visual tricks, and distorted reality in
original works of art.

LUNCH OPTION 7 (L7:15-19)

Campers can bring their lunch to the Michener
and combine morning and afternoon programs
for a full day art experience this week. CITs
and college interns will supervise students
during their lunch hour while art teachers
prepare for their afternoon classes.
