Celebrating Navaratri
The nine nights of festivity and the tenth day of Vijayadashami make up
the pan-Indian festival called Dussera. Navaratri, Bommai Kolu - the Festival
of Dolls and Durga Puja are the other names given to this lovely festival
that is a beautiful blend of religion, worship, family and social interaction
and community celebrations. In this famous festival of India there is colour,
pageantry, music and dance. In the South the bommai kolu - arrangement
and display of dolls in homes, temples and public venues is the highlight of
this event.
Editorial
Navaratri means nine nights that occur according to the Hindu calendar
on equinoxes or equal nights when the sun is vertically overhead at the
equator or centre. This is the time when the human body attains equilibrium
with nature. Meditating and worshipping the three goddesses - Durga
(Shakthi), Lakshmi and Saraswathi satisfies different aspects of human
existence. Lakshmi is the goddess of well being and enterprise; Saraswathi
is the goddess of learning and wisdom;
and Durga or Shakthi represents
creation, courage and intrepidity.
Durga is also Kali, a representation
that is dark and fierce. She is
power and eternal energy and
time and change. She is usually
shown as the figure of destruction
and annihilation; but she is also the
figure of tremendous strength who
offers her devotees the hope that
evil, represented by demons and
rakshasas can be annihilated.
In South India, Orissa and Bengal
the festival is dedicated to the
three Devis especially Durga. It
is Dussera, a ten day festival in
north India that commemorates
the nine day war between Lord
Rama, the incarnation of Lord
Vishnu and Ravana, the ten-headed demon. The tenth day is celebrated as
Vijaydashami, the day of victory.
This is time for social interaction: In the Kolu of South India, women visit
each other and socialise and exchange gifts symbolising the concept
of sumangali, the auspicious woman. In Bengal, Bihar and Orissa it is a
community interaction. In Gujarat, inhibitions are set aside in a joyful
celebration of music and dance. In the northern belt of UP and Delhi, it is a
public witnessing of the destruction of evil. Bonding between families and
friends and a celebration of womanhood marks this festival as a unique
celebration.
The ten days are spent praying, offering puja and socializing. Chandi havans,
recital of Lalitha Sahasranamam (1008 names of Durga), Lakshaarchanai
(one lakh prayer cycles) and ritual Devi pujas are carried out in homes
and temples. Ashtakanya or eight young girls are also honoured in some
families during the puja.
All over India the brown chana is cooked in honour of the fertile women
goddesses. There is public participation in cooking, serving or distributing
and eating food. In the south, each day has a special dish associated
with it. The sundal is made of different grams and shared with family and
neighbours.
The ninth day is celebrated as Sarawathi Puja when all material associated
with learning, like books and musical instruments, are specially worshipped.
The tenth day, Vijayadashami, is celebrated as Victory Day and as Ayudhapuja
when all tools and machines are worshipped. This concept originated
from Durga killing Mahishasuran the demon. This day gives thanks to the
weapons that helped to win the war.
The story of the Ramayana, with dance, music and mime, is related during
these ten days. The last day, is Ram Lila and celebrated with the burning
of the effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna and son Indrajit with
fireworks.
Finally, whether it is Rama or Durga, Puja or Kolu, Navaratri
or Dussera, it is a celebration of the
Jay Prakash. R (JP)
triumph of good over evil.

9 Dressing Tips for a Slimmer You!
Bored of wearing the customary salwar suits, those predictable black pants or
that occasional sari?
Well ladies it’s time to put a zing into your official attire by trying out those
professionally chic, formal skirts. I can already sense a lot of you rolling your
eyes at the very suggestion. Yes, it is fact that we do not see a lot of formal skirted
women around, which made me wonder on the ‘Why?’ friends, colleagues and a
few surprised ladies who I randomly stopped on the streets.
The study, I must say revealed a number of half amusing-half valid reasons. “I’m
not sure if I can pull off that look,” doubted one colleague while yet another
complained that she did not know what kind of skirts to wear. ‘My boyfriend
doesn’t think I look great in skirts’ said one PYT while glaring at the aforementioned
young man, who proceeded to fervently deny the accusation. “It’s easier to pull
on a kurta,” declared quite a few ladies matter-of-factly. However, one glaring
fact stood out among all these responses; majority of the women mentioned
that they would love to try out the look but the only aspect preventing them from
doing so was the actuality that not many people attempt such a look for work.
Talk about vicious cycles!
So ladies, don’t you think it’s time we break that endless loop? Of
course, this apparel is not being put forth as an everyday wear
but as that special something for those days when you yearn
to dress up in something different, or for those important presentations or for one of those semi-casual Fridays. Therefore,
why not spice up your formal wardrobe a little bit?
So if you are planning to induce a little spurt of spunk and
trendiness into your formal attire, here are a few basic
tips to help you along.
The styles: Two simple styles that can be safely carried
off as formal are the Straight skirts and the A-line skirts,
the latter usually if you find the straight skirt a tad bit
uncomfortable.
A Straight skirt as the name implies hangs straight
from the hips. It is fitted from the waist to the hips
and does not carry any pleats. Most straight skirts
have a slit or a kick-pleat at the back for ease of walking. Considering the formal setting, a safe bet would
be skirt with a kick pleat rather than a slit.
An A-line skirt gives the shape of the capital letter A. It
is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the
hem. The key to keeping this comfortable look trendy is
to ensure that the flare is kept to a medium.
The length: How long is ‘just right’ is a question that
bothers a lot of us. Well ladies, just remember the
N2K rule - Navel to Knees. Ensure that your skirt is worn at your navel and
ends at your knees. Too long and the classiness of the look could be lost;
too short and you run the risk of moving away from formal and probably
a visit from HR!
The fit: Comfort is a priority in any style of clothing. Nobody wants to be that
woman who is unable to focus during that important presentation because her
skirt is literally suffocating her.
To do away with issues of too tight or too loose, make sure that you put the skirt
through the ‘sit & walk trial’, before you actually buy it. This is the best way to
rate a skirt’s level of comfort. You might realize that a skirt that you thought fitted
great while you were standing has a tendency to ride up when you walk or that
a skirt that moved perfectly while you were walking might actually bite into your
waistline when you sit. Getting that right skirt is like getting that perfect pair of
jeans; you would definitely need a few trials before you hit jackpot.
The colours: Black has always been the uncrowned king of fashion for the simple
fact that going wrong with black is not easy! Needless to say, black could be your
pick for your first formal skirt. You may also experiment with navy blue, dark
brown or even beige.
This brings us to the question of stripes. Stripes bring you a wide variety of options but Mr. Stripes is also a very tricky man. Choose the wrong kind of stripes
and you could end up looking more voluptuous or leaner than you actually are.
So if you do not want to bother yourself with all those alternatives, solid colours
are the way to go.
The shirt: While a shirt can be worn for that purely formal look, you can also pair
the skirt with a blouse for those semi-casual Fridays. A point to be noted here is
that it’s wiser to wear a plain skirt with a striped shirt or vise versa. A striped shirt
with a striped skirt could easily spell disaster.
The shoes: Irrespective of the type of clothing, flats and mid-heel shoes have
been the most sensible choices for formal footwear. However do remember that
open sandals are a strict no-no for this look. Mid-heeled pumps are the best option for formal skirts and of course not to forget the classic Mary Janes, which will
step up your style any day.
Soladies that just about covers the basics on how to clinch that formal skirted
look. Hope they work for you!
Let me leave you with my personal version of a quote by Coco Chanel, founder of
the international brand Chanel -‘Fashion fades, only personal style remains.’ So
go ahead and flaunt your style ladies!

Story: To put it straightaway, Anandhi leaves G.V. Prakash as he leaks
their sexual affair to his school friends. While, Manisha Yadhav leaves
him as he didn’t have sex with him & doesn’t allow her to drink. What
happens next forms the crux of the story.
Anandhi – Asusual, her beautiful eyes speaks much more
than her mouth. But, it is surprising on how she agreed to
do this kind of role, after doing homely roles in her earlier
movies.
Manisha Yadav – She had been used in this movie for skin
show & she has given her best.
Simran – She does the role of Anandhi’s aunty in the movie
& impresses with her acting skills.
Music Director G.V. Prakash – Bittu Padam song has
reached well among the youngsters & there is no doubt,
they will be dancing for it in all theaters. But, G.V. Prakash
as music director had not delivered his best.
Editor Anthony Ruben – His editing in the first half was
quite good, but second half was quite dragging. He
could have edited few more scenes in the second half.
Director Adhik Ravichandran – He has definitely
given the boldest movie in Tamil Cinema in recent times. He wanted to
satisfy the virgin boys & he has delivered it brilliantly in the first half. But,
the second half looks little dragging as it moves without any glamorous
scenes (which virgin boys expects).
Overall, Trisha Illana Nayanthara is strictly for Virgin boys alone with
heavy dosage of adult comedy.
Rating of this movie by Common Man – 2.25 / 5
G.V. Prakash – He has improved to some extent on his acting & dancing
skills in his second movie. Credits to him for doing this role (Youngster
who gives importance to his sex hormones), most of the actors will not
do such kind of role. He has to improve on his dialogue delivery. But, his

But, in Kollywood, there were not much
adult oriented comedy movies, which got
released in last 2 decades. Thulluvadho
Ilamai, directed by Kasthuri Raja (according
to Credits) & technically directed by
Selvaraghavan was one of the very few
adult related movies, which had been
accepted by the audience in the last 20
years. ‘Yaaruda Mahesh’, which had lots of
adult comedy content in the trailer, went viral
few years back. But, the movie didn’t succeed
at the box office due to various reasons. Let us see whether TIN will
satisfy the usual movie goers (youngsters) & create a new section of
audience for this genre in Tamil Cinema in this Common Man’s review.

Movie Review
It was promoted as ‘Bittu Padam’ & huge hype was
created over lip-lock scene. Without any doubt,
advance reservations for this movie were too good &
it had got big opening. Movie had been certified as
clean ‘A’ certificate too. Hence, it is illogical to
watch this movie & say that it has more adult
contents. Adult comedy genres are common
in Hollywood & even in Bollywood, many
movies have come, including Dostana, which
had been well received by the audience.

Of Budgets and Shoes
Wardrobe Makeover
It’s the unfortunate truth that most of us tend to dress up fabulously only to
ignore one vital accessory; the shoes. A plain black dress could be the norm,
but pair it with blood red pumps and you could hit the spotlight. Few realize
that shoes are so potent, that they can make or break an outfit. This holds
good not only for the ladies but also for the men. Any man who thinks that he
can make an impression in a suit that cost him a month’s salary, while totally
ignoring the shoes definitely needs help!
This brings me to the question one perplexed male friend asked me “What’s
with shoes and women? And why are women crazy enough to try and balance
on heels?” I would have given him the perfectly ‘valid’ answer, that some
of us ladies are ‘like that only’, if he had not gone on to point out the levelheadedness of his breed. “You should be like us guys,” he claimed. “We have
always worn sensible shoes.” My unruffled response to this was to make him
check out the ‘sensible’ shoes worn by males during the High Renaissance
period. Well, to cut the long story short, he has to this day refrained from
commenting on the follies of women’s footwear. For the curious, this was
what our ‘always sensible’ men wore during the High Renaissance period!
So whether we like it or not, what started off as basic protection for the feet
has now morphed into a style statement so powerful that we often find
people flaunting the number of footwear they own even if the numbers were
to border on insanity. Take for example Ms.Imelda Marcos, a Filipina politician
who once smugly declared,“I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes, I
had one thousand and sixty.” Make no mistake ladies, I’m definitely not for
owning enough shoes to build a house with but I’m all for possessing some
classic styles that are a must-have, in every shoe closet. So that’s how we
come to the issue of pumps.
Our Chennai ladies, have always been spectacular when it comes to footwear,
from the simple flip-flops to the elaborately crafted mules (which for the
uninitiated is indeed a style of footwear and has nothing to do with the animal
that goes by the same name). However one style of footwear that we don’t see
around much is the pumps.
Pumps?
Simply put pumps are shoes with closed backs and low-cut fronts with the
fronts being closer to the toes. The classic pumps are devoid of buckles or
straps.
Today’s women however, have numerous styles of pumps to choose from:
ankle straps, T-straps, or Mary Jane straps, peep toes, pointy toes, round toes,
How to BEHAVE at official parties
Parties can be categorized into two - the social ones and the ‘not’ social ones.
Your office party unquestionably falls into the ‘not’ category. With so much stress around you, work pressure…etc. you might think that at
the office party you could just grab a glass of drink and let your hair down or
speak your mind.
However, my advice is - Don’t take that road ever! Office get-together is NOT
the place for idle chat or letting your guard down. It is also not a place where
you can express your frustration about your boss / company or download all
your personal problems!
Here are four important tips to follow while attending an office party:
1. What to wear: No matter how fit you are or how badly you want to show
off your physique / figure, office party is just not the place! Casual clothes,
transparent clothes, animal prints, very short dresses or any kind of skin
display that shows off your body or skin in an office get-together is not the right
projection of your proffessional image! You can’t expect to be taken seriously by
your colleagues. Remember that you will be mingling with important people
who may be key decision makers of your career. Appropriate dressing would
be business casuals or formals such as an attractive cocktail dress for women
or a casual business attire for men.
2. Be on time: You have to be punctual as you would be when you report to
work daily. Going in late is inappropriate.
3. Talk to people: Talk to people at the party, do not isolate yourself or simply
stick with the people you came with. You need to mingle with the crowd,
however, don't spread yourself too thin trying to cover everyone. You won't
enjoy it. Keep the conversation light and casual. Do not gossip about co-
almond toes and heels of various heights. Add a strap here or change the toe
there and you get several variations of the pumps, which often go by different
names.
What it used to be!
Amazingly enough, this epitome of women’s footwear originated from a form
of men’s footwear. Pumps originated from the word ‘pompes’ which were
shoes formerly worn by men in the 1500s and later by female servants during
the same period. They were branded as shoes for the lower class as without
buckles and laces, these plain shoes were considered cheap. Today of course,
pumps are a symbol of style and class.
The WOW factor
One word that defines this type of shoes is versatile. Pair it with a smart skirt or
a pair of pants and you are ready for work. Slip on a dress with the same pair of
pumps and you are all set for an evening out. Strut out in jeans and pumps and
you can re-define sexy. You may even experiment with a
churidhar suit if you choose the right pump. Identify that
right pair of pumps and you can make any outfit work.
The only item of clothing that will probably clash with
your pumps is the sari but hey, it’s all about polishing
your personal style so kudos if you can pull off that
combination as well!
The OUCH factor
The only con with this style of footwear is that it’s
unsuitable for ladies who do not react well to closed
footwear. Ladies with excessive sweating of the foot
might find this a tad bit uncomfortable but worry not
for this is probably why the peep toe pumps were
invented. Confused about what peep toes are?
Well if you remember Angelina Jolie’s infamous
one-legged pose at this year’s Oscars, you ought
to have noticed her peep toes too!
So you see ladies, one pair of classic pumps and
you could have a lot going on for you in your
wardrobe. Nothing’s stopping you from getting
your very own pair now, is there?
As is usual, let me leave you with a quote. This
one is by John Fairchild, publisher of WWD which
is often referred to as the Bible of Fashion – “Style
is an expression of individualism mixed with
charisma.” Hit the nail on the head, didn’t he?
workers or about people that you know. This
gives the impression that confidentiality isn't Corporate Corner
important to you.
Carry your drink in your left hand, and leave your right hand free (clean and
dry) for shaking hands when you meet new people.
4. Networking: A great time to build relationships. Networking is very important.
You never know who you might meet. Go and talk to people whom you don’t
know. If you're unsure of what to speak, its best you ask questions as ice
breakers to the other person such as i) Which department do you work in? ii)
How long have you been with the organisation? …etc. These questions give
enough opportunities for you to engage in a conversation.
This is a unique opportunity for you to bond with your superiors and
colleagues. Don’t get into discussion / behaviors that might cause relationships
to deteriorate or be damaged. Do not ever bring your f lirtatious mood into an
official party, no matter how tempted you might be.
5. Don’t over eat or drink: Be modest with food and drinks. You may be hungry
but don’t overeat. Eat slowly, chew quietly, don't talk with your mouth full and
don't lick your fingers :) One drink, at most two and don't make a pig of yourself.
Remember that you are at a professional get-together and behave accordingly.
That means proper attire, listening to others as much as talking and most
importantly, keeping your conversation on safe topics!
Office parties though it seems like a social occasion don’t forget that you’re
reputation could be at stake. You should think of it as a way to improve your
standing within the company.
So, enjoy your next office party
and ensure that you
are remembered for the right
reasons and not be a topic
of office gossip!
