Frankly Speaking...
The big sports talk about town seems to be whether or not
Tom Brady will be the starting quarterback when the
Patriots take the field Sunday.
Excuse me while I discreetly cover a yawn.
Tom Brady is as New England as baked beans, but
without the unpleasant side effects. He’ll be in the start-ofthe-season lineup without a doubt, Bill Belichick’s feeble
attempt at trying to create a stir notwithstanding. He’s in
the top three of most games won, he’s starting the Patriots’
games for years, and the guy who’s his number two didn’t
manage to win a single game in the preseason.
Hmmm…. I wonder if Brady will start.
Sure, he claims to have a bum foot, and he hasn’t
played in any preseason games, but he’s a football player,
for gosh sakes. Even if he is a pampered quarterback he’s
used to being push, pummeled and thrown to the ground
with appalling regularity. If a sore foot is going to keep him
from starting the season, perhaps it’s time he retired and
put that bad foot up on a comfy footstool. He can watch the
games from the comfort of his own home, but I don’t think
that is the way that Brady is planning on spending this yearor any year in the foreseeable future.
Now, I’m not blaming Brady for the rampant lack of
information. He’s the chess piece in this game Belichick
seems to feel he has to play. Brady knows which side his
bread is buttered on, and I’m sure he’s learned over the
years not to cross his boss; a lesson many of us learn as we
go through life. A lot of us have gotten the “keep quiet
about this one” lecture. Those of us who followed it are still
employed- those who didn’t…well, we may be employed
but not necessarily at the same job. I get the feeling Brady
is fond of his current position, so he’s not going to give
anything away about the plans for this weekend’s game.
But how much of a naïve fool do you have to be to lose
any sleep over who will be the starting quarterback for the
Patriots? It’s either Brady, whats-his-name Cassel, or the
new guy, O’Connell. The last two are guys who are far
from household names, even though Cassel’s been around
for a while. He’s been around, but he’s been holding a
secure place on the bench. His preseason was shaky, and
I’m being generous with that description, because I always
like to think the best of people.
The point is, what are the Patriots trying to do? If they
want us to talk about them, they don’t have to try so
desperately. They had an (almost) perfect season last year;
they were the best team in football, except for one rather
sad day in February. We still love them, and will watch the
game.
The Patriots don’t have to create interest to sell tickets;
I bet you couldn’t get a ticket for the opening game for face
value if you tried; and the entire season must be pretty well
sold out, too.
If they’re trying to create television viewership, if I
cared that much about who was starting, I’d watch the first
10 seconds of the game and I’d be able to figure it out. I
may watch football, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m
stupid (that’s a joke- don’t send me angry e-mails).
But all the games in football are not always acted out
on the field. A naïve person might think that picking up the
football and advancing it ten yards might be what the game
is all about. But, oh, are they wrong. As we have seen in
many sports over many years the game is as much about
what people think and what people say as about the action
on the field. The right attitude, the right intimidation of the
other team, the right fan base can mean the difference
between winning and losing, which is what casual fans
may not understand.
But Belichick thinks he knows how to play the game;
the real game, which consists of field and mind strategies.
Sometimes it seems a very silly, but let’s see what happens
this weekend. That’s when the real games start.

Clarifications & Corrections
In last week’s story about the “Cooperstown Kids,” a
contingent of Barnstable Little League all-star baseball
players who recently went to Cooperstown, NY to participate
in a youth baseball tournament, it was stated that John
Rogorzenski was the head coach and main volunteer behind
the team’s success. The head coach and central adult figure
for the team was Courtney Palmer.

Gridiron Gab
By John Garner
Now that the exhibition games are
finally history, it’s time to begin
the National Football League’s
regular season.
Despite going 0-4 and looking
downright pathetic during the
Brady-less preseason, the New
England Patriots are still picked
to win the AFC East Division and
one of the favorites to win their
fourth Super Bowl during the past decade.
Coach Bill Belichick and his band of merry
men host the rebuilding Kansas City Chiefs Sunday in a
1 p.m. kickoff at Gillette Stadium and the Pats will play
without third-down specialist back Kevin Faulk, who’s
been suspended for one game by the NFL.
His place will be taken by former 1,000-yard
rusher LaMont Jordan, a 5-10, 230-pound bruiser equally
adept at moving the pile or catching a swing pass out of
the backfield.
He’s joined in the backfield by starter Laurence
Maroney, Sammy Morris and fullback Heath Evans.
After several 100-yard rushing performances late last
season, Maroney was unimpressive during preseason
games, often failing to hit the line hard. Morris enjoyed
two straight 100-yard games in 2007 before going down
with a season-ending chest injury. Evans is a tough
blocker and effective inside runner.
But unless the offensive line improves and/or
gets healthy in a hurry, the backs will have little room to
maneuver. Pro Bowl left tackle Matt Light’s return
should help protect the quarterback’s blindside. Fellow
Pro Bowl OG Logan Mankins and Pro Bowl center Dan
Koppe will start on the O-line, along with Nick Kaczur
and probably former practice squad member Billy Yates
at right guard.
Offensively, the big question will be how effective and mobile will Tom (Mr. Franchise) Brady be on
Sunday against the Chiefs? Is his foot injury the same he
was suffering with in the Super Bowl last season or is it
a new problem? Trying to get answers out of the Patriots
is like trying to get state secrets out of the former Soviet
Union’s KGB.
The position with the fewest question-marks is
wide receiver, where Randy Moss, who caught an NFL
record 23 touchdown passes and Wes Welker, who led
the NFL with 110 catches, are lurking. Jabar Gaffney
beat out departed Chad Jackson for the third receiver,
while returner C.J. Jones and special teams’ maven Sam
Aiken will also see action. Ben Watson and sure-handed
David Thomas are the tight ends, along with recentlyacquired Jason Posiask from the New York Jets-JetsJets.
While the offense during the preseason was
spotty and unproductive, the defense was absolutely
woeful. Playing with vanilla schemes and not much
emotion, the Patriots gave up far too many scoring
drives, especially in the first quarter when starters were
facing starters.
The defensive line of Richard Seymour, Vince
Wilfork, Ty Warren and Jarvis Green is usually second
to none in the league, but it didn’t put a consistent pass
rush on opposing quarterbacks during the preseason.
Along with veteran Tedi Bruschi, athletic first round
draft choice Jerod Mayo will start at inside linebacker
and will need to become more stout against the run.
Veterans Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas are the
outside backers, along with backups Pierre Woods and
rookie Shawn Crable.
The biggest concern revolves around the secondary,
particularly at cornerback where Ellis Hobbs is the lone
returning starter. He’s joined by rookies Terrance
Wheatley and Jonathan Willhite, veteran Lewis Sanders
and former Pro Bowler Deltha O’Neil. Safety should be
a strong point with the likes of Rodney Harrison, James
Sanders and second year man Brandon Meriweather,
along with the possible return of graybeard John Lynch.
In the AFC East, New England will battle the defensiveoriented Buffalo Bills, the Brett Favre-led Jets and the
woeful Miami Dolphins, whose offense should improve
with the addition of Chad Pennington.
Other strong AFC teams should be Peyton Manning and
the Indianapolis Colts, the talented San Diego Chargers
and probably the always-tough Pittsburgh Steelers.

Can Tom Turco’s Girls Make It An Even Dozen?
Heading Into His 21st Season, the Legendary Red Raider Volleyball Coach Has
Seen and Done it All, So What Could
Make Things More Perfect Than A 12th
Division 1 State Championship Title?
HYANNIS — Tom Turco’s girls are used to thunderbolts. They deal with them all the time and they have
dealt with them since Turco took over the Barnstable
High School girls volleyball team 20 seasons ago in
1988, but this season the girls weren’t really sure if
they could handle the latest in one of life’s unforeseeable events.
Senior Stephanie Tuepker, a return letterman
and expected big cog in the Red Raider machine that
has grown to become BHS Volleyball these past two
decades, tore her anterior cruciate ligament while
playing summer volleyball just a few weeks ago.
But according to Turco, the train has kept on
and keeps on rolling. His student-athletes, in essence, are rarely hindered by distractions or in teammate Tuepker’s instance, likely season-ending
speedbumps.
“Right now, we’re a top five Division 1 team
(in the state of Massachusetts),” Turco said. “But this
team, more than any other team I’ve ever had has to
dig in defensively.”
With the season opening on Tuesday (Sept.
9) on the road versus Dennis-Yarmouth, it is likely
this year’s Red Raiders will be wholly prepared to
pick up right where they left off last season by
capturing the program’s fifth Division 1 state championship in a row and 11th since Turco’s first state
title in 1993.
Barnstable has lost just 10 games in the past
decade, including the postseason, and Turco’s lifetime recored of 444-45 places him among the very
elite of coaches who have served in all sports since
the school’s inception in 1873. Only two other coaches
— Bob Kingman and the late Katherine “Kay”
Nehubian — have captured more league titles than
Turco, lifetime.
“I enjoy what I’m doing,” Turco said. “It’s a
challenge for me. Every year we graduate great athletes and each year we always have good players
moving up and really good players coming in.”
But what pushes Turco more than just about
anything is watching a team like this year’s squad
and the way they react on both a personal level and as
a unified front against such challenges as the loss of
senior teammate Tuepker recently.
“We call them thunderbolts,” Turco said.
“They can either devastate you or motivate you.”
One of the central if not the central characters on this year’s squad is fourth-year stalwart
Stephanie Bristol who is the only player on the team
who has already earned three varsity letters in volleyball and who actually played on the team’s past
three state championship titles. The Red Raiders
have only lost two games — both of them last season
— with Bristol in the lineup. The team went undefeated the two years she was in middle school, as
well. As of this moment, Bristol is entertaining any
number of full athletic scholarship offers from Division 1 schools across the nation which points to yet
another feather in Turco’s cap.
Since he took over the volleyball program in
1988, he has helped secure well toward $2 million in
Veterans One And All — This
year’s seniors (from left) Stephanie Tuepker, Alison Klotz, Stephanie Bristol,
Lilly Lowe, Jackie Friel, Nora Wood and Michele Begley have won three state titles and lost just two games

athletic scholarships for girls who have matriculated
through his volleyball program.
Seniors Nora Wood, Alison Klotz and
Maribeth Martin — whose mom Marylou Martin
serves as the program’s junior varsity coach —have
each lettered twice in volleyball and have been mainstays on the team since their sophomore year.
So are the pieces in place to repeat for the
sixth straight time as State Champions?
Turco thinks the pieces are there, he said, but
in his usual modest fashion he deflected the attention
to the kids.
“They’ll be as good as they want to be,” he
said.
Sharing the role of leadership may be a slight
bone of contention for these girls behind the scenes
as Turco conceded he has not yet named this year’s
captains.
With the loss of last year’s five senior captains — Amanda Parker, Kara Cullen, Kristi Everson,
Kortney Kelley and Casey Eagan — and with
Barnstable’s long history of post-graduate success
among its volleyball captains, it’s easy to see why
each of the elder girls on the team is itching to join
that long, honorable line.

Red Raider Volleyballers Look
to Make it ‘An Even Dozen’
Continued from Page 3
Turco would not comment further on the
naming of this year’s captains but did say he would
announce them soon. Five captains — such as BHS
had last year — is often rare and slightly superfluous
in any sport, but one can see why all five seniors on
last year’s state championship squad had a hand in
steering the Red Raiders toward the team’s ultimate
goal of being the best.
The issue is that this year the team boasts
eight seniors. In all likelihood — someone’s ego may
have to suffer a blow, or as Turco is wont to say, “a
thunderbolt.”
But placing personal obstacles or pains aside
is the essence of leadership and success in any organization or on any team. Turco may just be biding his
time before opening day next week to see which of
his senior girls will reveal the greatest sense of humility, a key component of any quality leader in any
venture.
Leading by example is something Bristol has
been doing since she stepped on the parquet floor at
BHS three autumns ago.
Since that time she has twice been named a
Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic player,
twice been named an Old Colony League all-star and
in her sophomore season she earned vaunted AllState status by being named to the Massachusetts
High School Volleyball Coaches’ All-State Team.
It seems the only achievements left remaining for the senior middle hitter would be to become
“We call them thunderbolts.
They can either devastate you
or motivate you.”
— Tom Turco, Head Coach
the ninth Red Raider of all-time to earn Gatorade
Massachusetts Division 1 Player of the Year honors
as well as serve as captain of a fourth straight Division 1 state championship team.
Bristol’s volleyball career at BHS slightly
mirrors that of 2008 Barnstable High School Athletic
Hall of Fame Inductee Lauren Knight who served on
four straight state championship teams from 1995 to
1998 and ended her career as a team captain and
Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year.
But time will tell, and this year with eight
seniors on the varsity squad things are truly looking
promising for the girls to get the job done.
As Turco’s eyes scanned the immediate horizon inside the Barnstable High School gymnasium
Tuesday afternoon, pop music blaring in the background and the shouts and giggles of his typically tall
and lanky Red Raider volleyball players filling in the
short silences, you could see a gleam in his eye as if
he had already selected a perfect spot along the
ceramic-tiled, lime green gym walls.
A perfect spot for a 12th Red & White cloth
banner reading “Division 1 State Champions.”

BHS Golfers Win Season Opener at Fairgrounds
MARSTONS MILLS — The Barnstable High School
varsity boys golf team hasn’t turned in a losing or
poor season since 1990 when the team went 7-10, so
why should this season prove any different?
Barnstable hasn’t missed a beat since Mark
Titus took the boys’ golf helm two seasons ago from
Bob Kingman, capturing back-to-back Old Colony
League titles and last season, the Division 1 South
Sectional title. All totalled, Titus has gone 33-2 since
taking over the program “that Kingman built,” so tp
speak, even in spite of doing things slightly differently than his predecessor.
The Red Raiders, who were first captained in
boys golf by William Cotter in 1935, have not had
captains named, selected or elected since Titus took
over the program. In essence, he clearly stated last
year, he feels that any seniors on the team should
provide a sort of de facto leadership ample enough to
pace the squad to its goals and mission.
The captaincy mantel, in otherwords, has
grown to become a sort of vestigial appendage of
sorts, not unlike the stirrup sock one still often sees in
the the game of baseball.
For this year’s Red Raider linksmen, leadership came quickly to the fore Wednesday in the
team’s season opening round at the Olde Barnstable
Fairgrounds as BHS defeated rival Falmouth, 254268 behind the the consistency of senior Jake Brown
who turned in a 40 and senior Chase Deluga (pictured
at right teeing off Wednesday) who came in at 42.
Sophomore Patrick Cunningham came in just
behind with a score of 41 as well and was followed by
junior Peter Butler (44), sophomore Joe Hunt (44)
and senior Jake Adams (44).
Falmouth’s Griffen Guerin also turned in a
respectable 40 for the day, but the Clippers’ Cam
Geggat shot a 42 and the rest of the visitors’ scores
were far higher than the hosts.
Also on this year’s Red Raider varsity roster
are Andrew MacAteer, Dylan Lahey, Kyle Mahoney,
Zach Wells and freshman Curtis Collopy. Next up
for BHS is Nauset today on the road.
Chasing After Victory — Barnstable High School senior Chase Deluga is the portrait of perfect form in the Red
Raiders’ season-opening 254-268 victory over Falmouth at the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Tuesday
afternoon. Deluga tied for second place with teammate Pat Cunningham as the pair each shot a 41 behind
team leader Jake Brown who fired a 40 to tie with Falmouth’s Griffen Guerin. Kathleen Cugini Photo

Red Raider Cross Country Teams Open With Wins
Cavanaugh In Early Season Top Form
to Pace Barnstable Girls to Victory
NEW BEDFORD — The Barnstable Girls Cross Country team got its season off to an impressive start Wednesday (Sept. 3), handing non-league opponent New Bedford
a 15-50 shut-out at New Bedford's Brook Lawn Park 3.1
mile course. It was the first meet of the season for both
teams.
Led by junior co-captain Anna Cavanaugh (22:16),
the Red Raiders swept the first eight places and placed 10
runners in the top 11.
Sophomore Kelsey Rudeck (22:51), senior cocaptain Grace Cambareri (23:48), junior Arielle Catania
(23:48), freshman Lucey Gorrill (24:50), sophomore Braila
Roy (24:52), and sophomore Devan Morris (25:13) completed the sweep for Barnstable, followed by freshman
Kristina Atsalis (8th, 25:22), sophomore Becca Knight
(10th, 26:31), and freshman Brie Campbell (11th, 26:59).
“I am pleased with these results,” said 7th-year
head coach Keith Caldwell. “We have 24 athletes, and
only 7 of them are juniors and seniors. We are young, but
I think we are a deeper team this year.”
The Raiders got strong performances throughout
from both their veterans and newcomers. Also competing
for Barnstable were seniors Sarah Holt (16th, 29:10) and
Kim Beatty (26th, 32:36); juniors Courtney Millar (15th,
29:01) and Tarin Dooley (17th, 29:19); sophomores Colleen Kiceluk (14th, 27:50), Tina Remie (22nd, 30:28), Liz
Martin (24th, 30:51) and Ashley Lawton (27th, 32:59);
and freshmen Molly DeMayo (18th, 30:09), Katie Ellinwood
(19th, 30:17), and Sam Tavano (20th, 30:18).
“The encouraging sign is that all of the veterans
on the team ran a faster pace today than they did at this time
a year ago,” Caldwell added. “We have our work cut out
for us, but we have good training time between now and
our league schedule that opens at Attleboro September
23.”
Barnstable will travel to Martha's Vineyard on
Saturday, September 13, to compete in the Vineyard
Invitational. The Raiders will enter teams in both the
varsity race and junior varsity race. The Raider harriers
resume their dual meet schedule on Friday September 19th
at Sandwich High.
The girls are coached by former Red Raider
track star Keith Caldwell who is now in his seventh
year as girls cross country head coach. Caldwell first
coached the Red Raiders in 1995 to an 8-3 mark,
followed by 10-1 (1996) and 13-0 (1997) seasons

before he handed the coaching reins to Jim Buckman.
Caldwell returned in 1999 and 2000 to lead
the girls to consecutive undefeated seasons (8-0 and
9-0) including the Division 1 State Championship
title in 1999.
Rick Linehan then took over the job for six
seasons through 2006 before Caldwell resumed his
role as head coach last year. Last season, Barnstable
went 6-2 and captured the Old Colony League championship title.
The Barnstable High School boys varsity cross
country team also opened this season with a victory
Wednesday (Sept. 3) at New Bedford, defeating the
Whalers, 27-30, under second0year head coach Steve
Moynihan.
Sophomore Jonathan Canon was the top Red
Raider to finish, coming in third place at 18:34. He
was followed by Greg Hardy (19:32), Anthony Rapp
(19:44), Nolan Ryan (20:22), Mike Horn (20:36) and
Connor Smyth-Hammond (21:20).

Cape Cod Riptides Capture Softball
Championship Title
Cape Cod Riptides U14 Team won the Championship in
the Cape Cod Girls Softball League Tournament Aug 23. This win makes it a three-pete for the program in this
age division. The team was comprised of a variety of
different players from all over the Cape, including
summer residents. The Riptides hurler Cayliegh
McCarthy had the games in control all weekend, in the
semi-final, facing 26 batters, with 17 strikeouts! She
kept the championship game in check as well, but it was
the entire team that contributed both at the plate and on
the field to secure the championship.
The Cape Cod Riptides U18 team placed third
in their age class, behind Nauset in 1st and MidCape
Steamers in 2nd.
The program also ran a U12 division this summer
which proved to be very successful. These players
learned to play the competitive game of softball, including
sliding, bunting, and stealing. Everyone looks forward
to net season.
The Cape Cod Riptides hope to expand next
year to add more teams and more levels of play at all
ages, including the addition of elite tournament teams
made of players from the entire Cape Cod Region.

Hyannis Sprint Triathlon 2 On Tap for Tomorrow
16th CRAIGVILLE BEACH HYANNIS SPRINT 2
TRIATHLON CLOSES STELLAR CITY SPORTS
NEW ENGLAND TRIATHLON TOUR
CRAIGVILLE BEACH — One contest remains in this
New England Triathlon Tour season before 2009 ushers in the Tour’s quarter-century celebration, tomorrow’s
16th Annual Craigville Beach Hyannis Sprint 2
Triathlon.
Greatness always finishes where it starts, and
what better venue for the display of swim-bike-run
athleticism than Craigville Beach in Hyannis for the
16th Hyannis Sprint 2 Triathlon, the longest continuous-running ‘sprint-style’ contest of its kind in the
country.
Presented by Time Out! Productions, the
Hyannis Sprint 2 Triathlon opens with a 1/4-mile (440
yards) swim at Craigville Beach, followed with a 10mile bike through scenic and historic Centerville and
Osterville and ends with a 3.5-mile run through the
village of Centerville/Craigville.
Traditional race favorite and Centerville resident George Bent — who since starting competition in
triathlons ‘moons ago’ has failed to finish in first place
only twice — will again enter Sprint 2 on the 6th as the
odds-on favorite among 14 athletes enrolled in the
Elite Division.
The June 14th season-opener held no finish
line surprises for Bent, yet he faced some early competition from Ray Botelho (Sandwich) during the swim
and bike portions of the race. Bent would capture
another Elite Men’s Division victory in 52 minutes and
one second (52:01) with Botelho as runner-up (53:46).
At Sprint 1, Framingham’s Kim Webster had
an amazing race, finishing in 56:50 as the first Elite
Female and 11th overall. Sarah Newcomb (Orleans)
placed as third Elite Female in 1:05:36.
Along with Bent and Newcomb and among the
nearly 800 expected to start the race, other Cape Cod
residents of note enrolled within the Elite Division at
the Hyannis Sprint 2 Triathlon include Mike Baker
(age 32, Hyannis); Mike Conena (48, East Sandwich)
and Mike Herlihy (44, Brewster).
As a special note to area residents...those driving through Centerville and Osterville between 7:00
and 9:00am on Saturday, September 6 should be aware
of steady cyclist and runner activity. The early 7:00am
start should lessen impact on vehicle traffic.
The 2008 New England Triathlon Tour is presented by City Sports in conjunction with Newton
Running and TYR…as well as Belmont Wheel Works,
Fuel Belt, Gatorade Endurance Hydration System, Poland Spring Water, Hammer Nutrition, Costa Fruit and
Produce, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Cape Cod Bagel
Company, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and
Kellogg’s.

Keep Away — Matt Bancroft, a senior fullback for the Red Raiders, turned in a scrappy effort Tuesday

the effort and Pat Mudie scored the game-winning goal. Kathleen Cugini Photo
Cass Wins 600th As Boys Soccer
Defeats Pembroke 3-2 in Opener
HYANNIS — You know things are looking up
for the Barnstable High School boys varsity soccer
program when the Red Raiders start the season
with a victory and that victory happens to mark
your head coach’s 600th lifetime win.
Struggling to find a junior varsity coach
to replace former Red Raider soccer and baseball
player State Rep. Demetrius Atsalis, and finally
finding one in first-year coach Kevin Eloy, the
Red Raiders had a sort of an unwanted question
mark hovering over their collective heads prior to
the season opener versus Pembroke Tuesday. But
with the return of team- and OCL-leading scorer
Pedro DaSilva and the regained health of speedster
and senior tri-captain Pat Mudie, along with a
slew of other gifted soccer players, Barnstable
went right at Pembroke after falling behind, 2-0.
Not having won a season opener since
2000 — the last winning campaign for the Red
Raiders until third-year head coach Foster Cass
paced the Red & White booters to a 9-7-3 mark
last season — Tom Silva and Mudie both scored
to knot things up Tuesday at 2-2. Barnstable had
fallen behind quickly versus Pembroke, 2-0, within
the game’s first eight minutes, but Cass poured a
little fire and brimstone into his troops to get
them on track before DaSilva blasted home the
game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Wodraszka
followed suit by collecting an inspiring, gamewinning save as the regulation clock ticked down
and Cass finally had his 600th career victory.
BHS next faces D-Y at 4:00 p.m.
tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6 at home.
Can We Get This Done? — Legendary BHS boys
soccer coach Foster Cass — who won the greater
bulk of his games at Duxbury High School before becoming the Red Raiders’ head coach two
seasons ago — captured his 600th lifetime victory Tuesday in Barnstable’s season-opening win
over Pembroke High School. Cass also coached
at Pembroke before coming to BHS. He is the
first soccer coach in state history to win 600 or
more games. Cass led Barnstable to its first winning season last year (9-7-3) in six seasons. Prior
to last year, the last time the BHS boys soccer
team posted a winning campaign was under John
Curtis in 2000. Kathleen Cugini Photo

Women Running Wild 5k Road Race
Osterville, MA, August 24, 2008
For the 12th year, the Women Running Wild road race
wended its course through Osterville, past the Wianno
shoreline, finishing up at the former Osterville Bay School.
Women Running wild has been a great favorite with
women over the past few years, as it is unique in being a
women's only race. Many women have used it as a jumping off point for their road race experience, as the course
is easy and the length of the race is reasonable for someone who is just starting recreational racing. This year 291
runners took part, with most being from the local area.

Cape Cod Sports Report

The Collegiate Beat by Cathy Finn
Mansfield University had a 1-0 win over Bentley in nonconference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at
Southern Connecticut State University. Mansfield, ranked
10th nationally in Division II preseason, improved to 2-0
while Bentley, tied for sixth in the preseason NFHCA
rankings, dropped its first under new coach Jessica King.
Bentley junior All-America Alyssa Sliney (Brewster/
Nauset Reg. HS) posted a crucial save on a shot by Kelly
Klimkowski. For the game she recorded five saves.Bentley
controlled play, finishing with a 12-5 advantage in shots
and a 14-3 edge in penalty corners, but couldn't put the
ball past the Mountaineers netminder.
The Bentley women's field hockey team, which
will be entering a new era this season with first-year head
coach Jessica King, has been ranked third in the Northeast10 Conference preseason coaches poll. The Falcons, 157 overall last season, received a total of 80 points in the
voting, one fewer than number two Stonehill. UMassLowell, 19-3 a year ago, garnered nine of 10 first-place
votes and a conference-best 99 points. Topping the list of
vets is junior netminder Sliney, twice the Northeast-10
Goalie of the Year. A first-team All-America last season
and a second-team selection in 2006, her career numbers
include a 0.87 goals against average and 20 shutouts in 45
games.
The Brandeis cross country teams defeated Bentley
College at Weston High School in the season opener. The
Judges took a 19-42 decision. Senior Mike Stone (E.
Falmouth, Mass.) came in third at 18:23.
Experience and enthusiasm are two key
components that are helping the 2008 edition of
Massachusetts Maritime men's soccer prepare for the
upcoming campaign, as the Bucs return 13 letterwinners
and 10 starters from last year's squad that had 10 of its 17
matches decided by one goal in a very competitive
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference race.
A newcomer at forward who will be looking for
solid production on the front line in freshmen Joao
Antunes (Hyannis, Mass./Cape Cod Tech).
In the back position, Dennis Doherty (West
Falmouth, Mass./Bishop Stang) will be vying for a role
in the Bucs' defensive lineup.
Football: Experience is always a plus in any
successful venture, and with 48 letterwinners and 20
starters returning to the fold this fall, experience is
translating into excitement for the 2008 edition of
Massachusetts Maritime Football.
And with nearly 50 newcomers set to venture to
Buzzards Bay as well, Head Coach Jeremy Cameron
heads into his fourth campaign with great depth on both
sides of the ball as he looks to keep the momentum of the
last two seasons moving forward. Cameron's crew captured
three triumphs in 2007 and had five other contests decided
by a total of 24 points, a clear indication that the Bucs'
fortunes are headed in the right direction.
“We’ve made progress, but we have more work
to do," Cameron says. "This group of upperclassmen will
play a key role in the direction of this program, both this
year and in the future, and I am confident that their
leadership will help us stay on course."
For offense, Sophomore Darryl Foote
(Wareham, Mass./Wareham) will be vying for a spot in
the offensive backfield this season.
The Bucs' offensive line includes junior William
Hafferty (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich).
Sophomore Patrick Fitzsimmons (Bourne,
Mass./Bourne) will provide depth at the linebacking
spot.
Peter Avitabile (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) will
provide additional depth on the d-line this season.
The Newbury College Nighthawks women’s
volleyball team might have seemed like a team that was
rebuilding after graduating five key seniors in the 2006
season and only carrying a roster of eight players. However,
the Nighthawks seemed to overcome all odds and proved
that they were still a championship team as they finished
off the 2007 season by winning the Association of DIII
Independents Northeast Regional Women's Volleyball
Tournament for the second consecutive year. Three
Newbury volleyball players were recognized as part of
the All-Tournament team during the championship
including Michelle Mountjoy (Falmouth, MA/East
Falmouth).
The Northeastern women’s soccer team fell to
Manhattan Friday night by a score of 1-0 at Parsons Field
in Brookline, but the Husky offense put up a tough fight.
Gabbi Jatkola (Yarmouth, D-Y), gave the offense a lot
of good quality scoring opportunities.
On August 29, Stonehill opened their 2008 season
in winning fashion, defeating Virginia State, 3-0 in the
first match for both teams at the Kutztown Classic.
Sophomore Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass.) chipped
in with six kills.
Stonehill continued its impressive start to the 2008 season
with a pair of wins at the Kutztown Classic on Saturday.
Stonehill took game one 25-14 then followed up
with 25-19 and 25-17 games to close out the Mavericks.
Now 3-0 on the young season, the Skyhawks return to
action on Thursday when they host Colby-Sawyer in their
home opener.
Tenth-ranked East Stroudsberg Warriors played
to a 2-1 win over sixth-ranked Stonehill field hockey in a
matchup of top 10 teams at W.B. Mason Stadium on
Saturday afternoon. The game stay even at 1-1 until the
second overtime when a East Stroudsberg player beat
Stonehill sophomore netminder Courtney Osier (South
Dennis, Mass.) with a low, rolling shot the found the left
corner of the cage midway through the fourth stanza.
Colby-Sawyer College tied Worcester State in
Soccer on August 29. Colby Sawyer freshman Liz Allen
netted the match equalizer at 70:20 after the Worcester
State keeper Erin Doherty made a spectacular save off the
foot of senior Charger forward Elise Kapp
(Yarmouthport, Mass.). Both squads made attempts to
end the game late and in the overtime sessions but were
denied by strong defense. The Colby-Sawyer Women's
Volleyball team has been selected to finish second in The
Commonwealth Coast Conference this season, according
to the 2008 TCCC Preseason Poll released on August 27.
The Chargers received 112 points and three first place
votes which ranked them just behind Endicott who received
117 points and eight first place votes. Colby-Sawyer
finished the 2007 season with a 28-8 overall record,
which included a 12-0 start to the season.
Setter Genny Moore (Barnstable, Mass.) returns
for her third season with the Chargers. Moore set the
single season record for most assists in a season with
1342. Moore earned All-TCCC second team honors and
is the floor general for the Chargers. Look for her to
continue to climb the all-time assists list this season as she
is working with the same offensive power.
Redshirt freshman Zach Wilson (Cummaquid/
Barnstable High School) got his first-ever collegiate
varsity start as a defensive
tackle last Saturday in
Division
1
Bryant
University’s 42-35 seasonopening loss to Central
Connecticut State. Wilson
collected 2.5 tackles in the
effort.
After recording
double-digit wins in 2007,
the Bryant University men's
soccer team will embark on
a new journey in Division I play. The Bulldogs finished
the 2007 campaign with an 11-7-1 record, but were
eliminated from the Northeast-10 conference tournament
in the quarterfinals . The 11-wins were the second-highest
total for the Bulldogs under the direction of Head Coach
Seamus Purcell, and the first 10-win season since 2001.
This season, the Bulldogs will begin a four-year transition
period into Division I where they will be members of the
Northeast Conference
For defense, Purcell brought in eight freshmen
who will all battle for playing time in the back this season,
including Bryan German (Sandwich, Mass.).
When it comes to success on the court, few have
played the game of volleyball better than Bryant University.
Now, in 2008, the Bulldogs will get their first chance to
prove it to the NCAA's most elite competition - Division
I. The Bryant University volleyball team aced its Division
I debut on August 29, taking a 3-0 win over the University
of South Carolina-Upstate to open Navy's Trident Classic
Friday afternoon. Senior co-captain Delia Glover
(Marston Mills, Mass.) had a match-high 16 digs. One of
the team's top passers, Glover came up with 542 digs and
51 service aces last year as a junior.
