SPIROL Welcomes Brazil to the Corporate Family
Indaiatuba, São Paulo, Brazil — October 15, 2012 — For the
previous six months, we have been diligently working with
attorneys and accountants on the formation of SPIROL Brazil.
At this time, the company has been established and a location
has been selected. For the first 18 months we expect the
organization to run as a sales organization only. This means
that the company will employ sales people who will develop
business for SPIROL within Brazil, but the product will ship
directly from the SPIROL manufacturing unit to the Brazilian
customer. During this period, SPIROL Brazil will be applying for
an import license that will allow us to import goods into Brazil.
Sometime between January and June of 2014, SPIROL
Brazil will begin importing and stocking product for Brazilian
customers. At this time, Brazilian customers will be serviced
directly from SPIROL Brazil. For the first 18 months, we
will not have a warehouse space as it is unnecessary.
We have hired our first three Brazilian employees who started
with SPIROL Brazil on October 15, 2012. They are: Mario
Gioto, Caio Delgado, and Alyson Schvarcz. All three are
Sales Engineers.
All three sales engineers arrived in Connecticut on
November 26 for 3-4 weeks. During this period, they
received intensive product training.
After that time,
Mario and Caio will continue their training in Brazil and
report into Luis Velasquez, Latin America Sales Manager.
From left: Caio Delgado, Alyson Schvarcz, Chris Jeznach (Product Sales
Engineer from CT) and Mario Gioto at the new office in the AnelBras building in
Indaiatuba. Chris was conducting product training for two weeks in November.
Alyson will relocate to SPIROL Connecticut for 18 months
starting in January, 2013 and will report into Christie Jones,
Business Development Manager, for his training period.
Training for the first three months will be extensive, and
we expect that we will begin SPIROL Brazil operations the
first part of January, 2013. Until that time, all three Sales
Engineers will be in training to execute our sales vision with
our customers in Brazil.

We have appointed a preferred distributor as our partner in Brazil whose
name is AnelBras Componentes Industriais Ltda. Marcos Salina is the
owner. SPIROL Brazil will be co-located with AnelBras for the first 12 to
18 months, and commensurate with the transition to being a distribution
operation, we will move to our own dedicated warehouse space.

Every year, scholarship applications are reviewed by a volunteer SPIROL employee committee
that evaluates the students’ desire to pursue advanced education, their drive to achieve a
certain vocation, their academic achievements, and most importantly, their extracurricular
activities and community involvement. The award recipients must be committed to continuing
with community projects throughout their college experience, providing them the foundation to
continue to give back to society as they enter their professional lives. Scholarship grants are
up to $5,000 per year with a maximum total of $20,000 per student over four years. SPIROL
considers these scholarships a valuable investment in the future growth of our community,
state, and country.

2012 20-Year/
Retirement Dinner
October 21, 2012 — Our dinner this year was hosted by
Jeff Koehl at The Bistro on Main located in Kent, Ohio. We
celebrated the new 2012 additions of Steve McCracken,
retiree, and Julie Frederick, 20 years’ service. We
recognized the loss of Harry Gatlin, retiree, in August, 2012.

In August, 2012,
the Board of

their
meeting
in Ohio and the
Shim
Division
hosted a lunch to
welcome them.
This was a great
opportunity
for

During the luncheon, Jim Shaw presented Steve McCracken,
Press Department, with a plaque congratulating him on 36
years of service.

Enjoy your retirement!
December 21, 2012 — A web site, which has been developed
solely for the Shim product line, has been launched. The
web address is www.spirolshims.com.
14
The home page has four rotating taglines and images
promoting the key messages that we want to get across to
our customers and prospects:
Precision Shims. Lower Costs.
Short Lead Times. No Tooling.
Quality Controlled. Strict Standards.
Local Design. Global Supply.
In total, the web site has 30 pages dedicated to Precision
Shims. While there is a link back to our corporate website,
the intention is to be a stand alone site for the sole purpose
of promoting and selling SPIROL Shims.
The site is initially being rolled out in English, yet the user
will have the ability to translate the website into 52 other
languages using Google Translate feature.
It is very easy to navigate and every page has a huge
“Request a Quote” button. Check it out!
SPIROL Striders
October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
SPIROL Shim coordinated a team and called themselves the
“SPIROL Striders” to participate in the American Cancer
Society’s Making Strides in Breast Cancer fundraiser. The
SPIROL Striders pledged to raise $1,000, which some of the
management staff thought was a little ambitious, therefore,
a challenge was made. If the team met the $1,000 goal,
Dave Tarter, Operations Manager, and Mark Scott, Quality
Manager, would wear a pink shirt for a day. Then the team
raised the stakes and if they doubled their goal, Chuck Daff,
Production Foreman, and Bob Gray, Production Supervisor,
would also wear pink for a day. As you can see, the SPIROL
Striders achieved not only their $1,000 goal, but reached
their $2,000 goal by raising $2,058.62! The SPIROL Striders
would like to thank SPIROL International for sponsoring the
team, their generous donation and allowing us to participate
in a very worthy cause.

SPIROL Ohio
Second Tour of Duty
December 19, 2011 — Dave Tarter returned to SPIROL as
Shim Operations Manager. Dave is a 1994 graduate of the
University of Akron with progressive work experience since
then. He worked for SPIROL Shims from 2003 to 2006.
Dave began as a Production Supervisor, and progressed
to Project Engineer / Environmental Manager. Before his
return, Dave worked as Production Manager for ATI Metals.
SPIROL Scholarships
A reception was held late summer to honor Ohio Shim
Scholarship recipients. Jeff Koehl presented the 2012
Scholarships to John Fisher and Julia Burrowbridge.
John Fisher is currently
in his Sophomore year at
Geneva College in Beaver
Falls, PA. John is studying
mechanical
engineering
and is a second year
SPIROL Shim scholarship
recipient. His Uncle Don
Fisher is a SPIROL Shim
employee in the Press
Department.
Laser Cutting Center
Julia Burrowbridge began
her studies this fall at The
Ohio State University in
Columbus, OH. Julia will
be studying engineering,
but has not yet decided what discipline. Julia is a member of
the SPIROL Shim Flex Pool Team in the Bench Department
and we look forward to her returning during her college
breaks.
Congratulations to Julia and John!
In May of this year, SPIROL Ohio took delivery of a new
laser cutting center. The new CL-920 Fiber Laser was
purchased from Cincinnati Incorporated, so it shares the
heavy duty frame, linear motor drive system, and Digital
Signal Processing motion controller with our current CL-707.
This allows us to share the same programming and nesting
software, as well as taking advantage of the experience we
have already gained with the previous two CL-707 machines.
The major advantage to the new CL-920 is its advanced
beam delivery system. Fiber lasers use single emitter
semiconductor diodes as the light source to pump the active
fibers through a solid state, fiber-to-fiber design. This means
that the laser is delivered though a fiber optic cable so
there are no mirrors or optics to align, adjust and maintain.
Because the diodes have an estimated life of over 100,000
hours, the laser itself is virtually maintenance free.

Passages
We were saddened by the loss of two employees during the
past year. We’ll miss Tony Mars, Laser, and Jim Ross,
Bench. Tony had worked at SPIROL since June 1994 and
Jim started in April, 2011. They were both active employees
when they passed this year. Our thoughts go out to their
families.

Retirement
SPIROL Spirit Awards
Irving ‘Spencer’ Betts retired from SPIROL on June 15,
2012 after 5+ years of service. He was given a party and a
gift certificate to a golf pro shop. This came in handy as he
is an avid golfer.
Enjoy your retirement, Spencer!
Two “Shining Star” awards were given out at our summer
cook out. Pauline Anderson and Mike Kingsbury were
recognized for fulfilling a customer order when our time was
running out. Because of their extra efforts, we made the
delivery and the customer thanked us for not letting their line

SPIROL Scholarships
Shelby Yee from Hartford High School was this year’s
recipient of the SPIROL Scholarship.
Congratulations to Shelby!
Miles Mushlin’s 1953 Nimbus Model “C”
The Model “C” design dates back to 1934. It is 746 cc’s, and has an overhead
camshaft and exposed rocker arms. The bike makes 22 HP and is shaft driven. The
chassis is made of heat treated strap steel and is very easily repaired. The machine
has a telescopic front fork developed one year before BMW claims to have invented
this feature.
My machine was one of 50 built for the Danish military, and was sent out to its
expeditionary force with gearing for a side car, but was never fitted with one. I
Miles purchased the motorbike at a swap meet in Pennsylvania in 2004. He met his
Nimbus mentor, a Swede named Lars Persson, over the Internet, and he guided Miles
through the entire process to get the machine up and running once again, after being
dormant 20 years. He took apart everything, and replaced mainly rubber parts. The
engine is terribly worn but still runs well enough that Miles has no need to rebuild it at
this time. It is fitted with a new four speed gearbox, developed by Folan Engineering
of Sweden.
Miles shipped the bike over to Copenhagen, Denmark during 2006, and Lars and
his friend, Lars Inge, rode with Miles from Sweden to Germany and down through
Italy camping all the way. “We returned through the Brenner pass in the Italian Alps
through Austria and Germany and ended up on Bornholm Island outside of Denmark.”
added Miles. “I attended my first Nimbus rally on Bornholm Island, and while there
I made a few additional friends. Pat and I have returned to Denmark every summer
since that time to go to this rally and we have made many more friends with whom
we stay during the course of our trips there. We also borrow a different Nimbus every
trip.”
This motorbike opened an entire new world to Miles and Pat Mushlin — an entirely
new community of friends.
These photos were taken this past summer when Miles rode the Nimbus to SPIROL
Connecticut from Vermont. Miles said, “The trip
was 190 miles, and was completely uneventful
as far as problems are concerned as the machine
is extremely dependable. It was interesting to
compare the technology of my Nimbus the that
of Jamison Tryon’s Suzuki Hayabusa. Most
of the engineering department had a great
appreciation for the design of the Nimbus, and I
shudder to think of the total engineering time lost
admiring it, but it was worth it!”

SPIROL Canada
Canada hosted the 2011 Global Sales Meeting
October 17-19, 2011 – The Global Sales Meeting in Windsor,
Ontario, was a great success and a fantastic opportunity for
the global team to bond.
After the meetings, many went to a winery and had a barn
fire by a river. The Canadian hosts had all the fixings to
make S’mores around the fire, but it rained all evening.
No one from Europe had heard of S’mores, so the Ohioan’s
took them to a restaurant that serves S’mores – graham
crackers with melted marshmallows and chocolate, prepared
over an open flame.

Retirement
Ralph Poupard retired on August 31, 2012.
He emailed a heartfelt farewell to SPIROL people he had
worked with over the years. It is reproduced here:
Today, I am retiring from full time employment at SPIROL.
I started with the company in January 1971, when we were Koehl
Industries Ltd. on Crawford Ave. At the time there were 8 people
total. We had 6 production machines, 2 each of RST, RST II,
and RST III. The controls consisted of an on-off switch. Over the
years we grew, acquiring self powered lift trucks, new heat treat
furnace and generator, new RST IV, VI, VII machines, stamping
department and much more until we could expand no more on
Crawford Ave., and we moved to our new location on St. Etienne
Blvd. I guess I‘m showing my age when I admit that I used a
slide rule in college,
although electronic
calculators were just
around the corner.
Sensors? The only
sensors in those days
were used by Leonard
Nimoy on Star Trek.
In retrospect, starting
from the beginning,
I’ve been lucky.
SPIROL has been
good to me. I was
able to learn so
much over the years that sometimes I find it hard to believe.
From mechanics to metal forming and forging, heat treating
and finishing, toolmaking, electrical and electronic systems,
QA functions, purchasing, basic business concepts and human
nature, I had a chance to learn. Of course I never could have
survived without working with great people over the years, who
worked with me and for me, and those who taught me and had
the faith to allow me to do the things I was able to do. It wasn’t
always a picnic, but I learned the value of teamwork, persistence,
patience, and setting goals. I always tried to do what was best for
the company. My thought was that what is good for the company
is good for all of us. My early mentor, Bob Laflamme taught
me “Treat everything like it was your own”, and I never forgot
that. Personally, again I’ve been lucky. Over the years I met my
future wife, got married, we raised 3 daughters, been able to own
a home, have dogs and pets, a place on Skeleton Lake and a
couple of MG roadsters.
As they say, time has a habit of creeping up on you, and when I
was young I thought this day would never come. But, of course it
did, and here I am at the beginning of a new chapter. I will work
part time on projects for a time, so I won’t be totally gone. I want
to thank everyone at SPIROL present and past for their help and
for being so good to work with and for.
— Ralph Poupard
Thank you for your 40+ years of service, Ralph.
Enjoy your retirement!

Production Floor
During FY12 our entire production floor was re-organized
to allow for a more effective process flow. The project
began in late December 2011 and was completed by mid
May 2012. Every piece of production equipment was
moved to a new location, the floors were refinished and
two new overhead crane systems were installed. The new
cranes have allowed for a drastic reduction in coil change
time, allowing one operator to change coils in less than 3
minutes. New lighting was installed in the production area,
with plans for the rest of the facility to receive upgrades.
During FY12 the Canadian Production team inherited three
Four Slides from the UK facility.
All our presses have been located in order of size and duty,
above are our 3 largest production presses.

General Motors. We are at the top of our supplier deck in
terms of performance. SQE’s, Engineer’s and using plants
were all surveyed to support this, along with statistics for
quality performance in areas of line interruptions, recalls,
and corrective actions. This is significant considering the

November 1, 2012 — The Global Quality Council was formed, with
the first meeting held from October 30 through November 1, 2012
at the Corby office.
The meeting took place over three days and proved to be very
productive with a number of action items resulting from discussions.
Special mention must go to Mike Woznicki who had his flight to the
UK cancelled as a result of the storms in the US around the time.
Never one to be beaten, Mike chose to join the meeting through
teleconference from the Connecticut facility in the middle of the
night when the plant was supposed to be closed due to the terrible
weather!
The objective of the council is to globalize our QA process and
establish processes that meet the needs of our customers on a global
scale. This is a cross functional council that takes in staff from Quality,
Operations and Sales. Other staff will also be included from time to time
to assist the council as expertise within specific areas are needed.
The council consists of the following personnel:
Ian Martin, QA Manager SPIROL Europe - Council Chairman
Mike Woznicki, QA Manager - SPIROL CT
Grace Lin, QA Manager - SPIROL China

ABOUT PAELLA – Paella is currently an internationallyknown rice dish from Spain. It originated in the fields of
a region called Valencia in eastern Spain. Today paella is
made in every region of Spain, using just about any kind
of ingredient that goes well with rice. There are as many
versions of paella as there are cooks. It may contain chicken,
pork, shellfish, fish, eel, squid, beans, peas, artichokes
or peppers. Saffron, the spice that also turns the rice a
wonderful golden color is an essential part of the dish.
Javier presents the paella as Raluca and Stéphanie will soon get
a taste of this great dish.

SPIROL SAS Achieves
ISO 9001 Certification
Late November, 2012, saw SPIROL SAS achieve
certification to ISO 9001:2008. Ian Martin, Quality Manager
- Europe, attended the French distribution facility to host
a two-day certification audit with a BSI representative.
Several members of the SPIROL SAS Order Creation and
Order Fulfilment departments participated in the audit which
resulted in a recommendation that the European distribution
facility’s activities meet registration requirements.
A big “Well Done” goes to Javier Raposo, Director of Sales
- Europe/General Manager of SPIROL SAS, Marie Alvarez,
Order Fulfilment Supervisor, SPIROL SAS, and every
member of their hard working teams! Thanks!

Community Support
Donation in Memory of Guenter Wexler
The icon stand which SPIROL International has donated
in memory of Guenter Wexler arrived on Saturday (May
26, 2012). If anyone wants to come and see it in person
please let me know and we can arrange for that. It is a
wonderful piece. It is practical, a work of art, and will last
several generations. It is hand carved oak in the Byzantine
style. It is called an Analogion. We are thrilled to have it.
Thank you so much.
— Father Nick Milas, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church,
Danielson, CT.
Guenter Wexler was the very first CT Machine
Shop employee. He embodied the SPIROL values
of hard work, attention to detail, honesty, integrity
and passion for continuous improvement. Before
his passing in 2010, Guenter was Vice President SPIROL International Corporation - North America.
The Gift of Giving
Every November we donate turkey and food to United
Services for distribution to needy families in the community
so that they may enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving Day dinner...
Helping a Customer
Heavy Hex Jam
Nut as Wedding
Ring
Barbara Urban got a request from a customer involving an
application for an H21. Her customer said, “My application
is actually a wedding band for my wife. I have been wearing
a H21,1/2 - 13, 303 Stainless, plain jam nut that I bored
out as my wedding band for just about 7 years (pictured
above). I have an anniversary coming up and I would like
to make a matching band for my wife. Because her finger
is smaller than mine, I need to start out with something that
has a smaller distance across the flats. The distributor I
purchased my nut from is no longer in business and I do not
know where to go.”
...Then in December we donate new toys to United Services
for them to give to children in the community as an extra
present in addition to what Santa brings them.
Thanks to everyone who contributes year after year!

Barbara and Miles Mushlin were able to fulfill the customer’s
request.
