Canowindra set for the Big Screen
It looks like Canowindra is about to hit the big
screen again, this time as the location of a
top-line mystery thriller movie starring none
other than Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and
Guy Pearce.
The film is called “Strangerland” and according to the publicity thus far it “details the
steady unravelling of one couple’s lives after
their two teenage children go missing in the
Australian outback.”
A co-production of the Irish company Fastnet Films and Australia’s Dragonfly Pictures,
it’s scheduled for cinema release in 2015.
Word about the project began rippling
through Canowindra last week when a team
led by Sydney-based location manager Colin
McDougall began scouting the town and environs for visual scenes and backdrops suitable for the movie.
The group had previously scoured Broken
Hill, but it’s understood they couldn’t find
anything that matched Canowindra’s historical character.
Production teams will return in force
on April 2 with around 60 Dragonfly staff
booked into the Old Vic Inn, Riverview Motel
and Eddy’s group accommodation facility
next to St Edmunds Catholic Church.
It’s understood they’ll be in the area for
eight days talking with local businesses and
generally getting to know the community.
And the project will put Canowindra on
the map for the second time, with “Strangerland” adding to the excitement and prestige
the town enjoyed in the March 2012 filming
of a high-tech Optus commercial on Gaskill
Street.

your dog.
Dear Editor,
I refer to recent media reports about the
Department of Veterans Affairs refusing to
provide access to treatment for victims of
abuse in the defence force.
Unfortunately it is both sad and frustrating
that I report these cases are not isolated. I
have many clients who are struggling to get
the access to treatment they deserve, particularly for psychological conditions.
Psychological trauma is every bit as debilitating as physical trauma and it is absolutely
imperative that victims get the support and
the treatment they need.
More often than not, this psychological
trauma is compounded by the challenges
veterans, ex veterans, members and ex
members face when dealing with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
This has been a problem for many years
but I have faith the current Government will
take these issues seriously and trust that
they will endeavour to treat our military personnel better.

Dear Editor,
I’ve just spent another day dealing with Telstra and the horrendous charges for people
that don’t have access to the ADSL network.
I’m not sure if I am the only one, (surely I’m
not) in the Canowindra area that cannot access the ADSL network. We have been paying $80 per month for the past 3 years and I
regularly go over our 12gb usage (I’m teaching and use the internet for lesson prep etc)
today I was advised that I need to upgrade
my plan as Telstra will no longer speed it up
free of charge if I’m over, this new plan is a
massive $160 and totally unsustainable.
Is this a common problem in your area? If
so we need to reach out to someone to help
fight toward a cheaper service. Any thoughts
or ideas?
Regards Diana Frost

Do You Have a
Sweet Tooth?
In September 2010 Alison started her business Fudge by Alison from home. Whilst Alison considers this a hobby business, and it
allows her to be a wife, mother to her young
son and pursue a nursing career in Orange,
she still manages to make 23 varieties of
fudge, with milk, dark and white chocolate.
Alison uses local hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios, locally grown strawberries and other
produce from local suppliers.
Alison said’ she absolutely loves making
the fudges, and that she has met some great
people along the way, and of course, gets to
sample some really yummy food.
Fudge by Alison can be found at The Orange Farmer’s Markets, The Agrestic Grocer,
A Slice of Orange, and Beekeepers at Vittoria. Don’t forget that the Farmer’s Markets
are on again this Saturday in Orange, so go
along and sample some of Alison’s great
fudges.

just outside Eugowra, this unique location is
nestled amongst the splendour of the Mandagery Creek in a very private setting. The
estate features a 150 seat Function Centre
set amongst beautiful garden surrounds, providing an elegant and romantic backdrop for
both the ceremony and reception. The bar
area boasts a large dance floor with a lounge
area nearby to suit a quieter occasion. Beautifully styled verandas’ are fully shaded in the
summer months with ornamental grapes.
Wedding ceremonies are often held in the
sunken garden area with its roses and fountain the highlight.
The hosts, Jayne and Neil McMillan, have
over 15 years’ experience and they understand the excitement and anticipation that
comes with organising the big event and are
able to assist with making a wedding day,
one of the most special, enjoyable and memorable days of a couples life. The dynamic
team of chefs create a sumptuous modern
menu ranging from flowing finger food to a
lavish banquette of several courses. They
also can arrange a specific menu to suit your
needs, catering for special requirements and
requests, for example, children, vegetarians
and photographer meals. Fresh seasonal
produce is always at the heart of the menus
provided here. An extensive wine list is available to accompany the menu, but Eat Your
Greens also allows the bridal couple to provide their own selection if they choose.
As well as servicing the local areas of
Canowindra, Forbes, Parkes and Cowra, they

and Young areas. All the cooking is done on
site, guaranteeing freshness every time. Be it
marquees, an auditorium, town hall, pavilion,

on. They have the most up-to-date equipment necessary to deliver hot fresh meals,
for which Eat Your Greens is renowned, to

CATCH of the Week
IMAGE: Vicki Grant – the government “can’t keep doing that.”
Vicki’s Pharmacy Joins Massive Petition
Against Gov’t PBS Cutbacks
government changes have drastically reduced the amount of money they receive to
provide these services.”
Says Vicki: “When cuts like that are made
too fast, it affects our stock levels. We have
smaller inventories. There are fewer reps on
the road. Customers have to wait for delivery of their medicines.
“The long term effect is that we have to
take a good look at the number of staff we
have.
“Yet we’re the only health professionals
who you don’t need an appointment to see,
and there’s no cost for the consultation and
services we provide.”
What’s made the issue worse is that the
government move ignored a cooperative
efFOR THE
fort by the Pharmacy Guild in which it engineered a massive cost-saving of around
$4 billion in federal PBS funding since 2010
– more than double the $1.9 billion the government actually demanded.

Vicki Grant, the very popular owner and
chief pharmacist of our one and only chemist
shop, says she has a lot to thank her customers for these days.
They rallied in their hundreds to support
a “Pharmacy Under Threat” petition that’s
become the biggest ever presented to the
federal parliament -- 1.2 million signatures
appealing to the government to back off its
cost-cutting attacks on the Pharmaceutical
Benefits Scheme (PBS).
It was launched last September when the
government mandatorily imposed another
round of funding cuts on the industry – reducing the number of medicines and drugs it
subsidises -- with no prior consultation.
“They accelerated the funding cuts by two
to three months, and gave us absolutely no
notice,” Vicki says.
“What our petition is saying is that they
can’t keep doing that.”

Celebrate
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th across the world annually,
celebrating the economic, political and social
achievements of women in the past, present
and future. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements, regardless of
divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic,
cultural, economic or political.
This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is inspiriting Change calling for;
Greater awareness of women’s equality,
growth of women in senior leadership roles,
growth of women owned businesses and increased financial independence for women.
Even though women’s equality has made
positive gains, the world is still unequal. The
vast array of communication channels, supportive spokespeople, equality research,
campaigns and corporate responsibility initiatives means everyone can be an advocate
inspiring change for women’s advancement.
As a professional accounting and business
services provider, YBM presently employ 45
staff and almost two thirds of those are women who hold positions in senior and management roles. They also have 6 owners working
in the business, 2 of whom are women, and
they believe it gives them an edge over their
competitors.
“It offers a different perspective and allows our female business owner’s clients to
have their accounting and business affairs
overseen by someone who understands the
challenges women are faced with”, Partner
at YBM, Mark Giumelli said.
Balancing a career and family is one of the
biggest challenges women face and it is a necessity these days for both parents to work.
So it is very important that they work with
advisors that understand and offer support
when required. At YBM we have the right
people to help ease the burden on business
owners, especially women. Don’t be afraid to
ask for support and enjoy the balance of a
successful business and happy family life.
In today’s society women also need to start
planning ahead, this means by taking care of
their own retirement fund and savings, which
we need to encourage.
First Choice Credit Union offer savings accounts with reasonable interest rates to help
women reach their financial goals, whether
it be for renovations, Christmas or your very
own home.
First Choice Credit Union is proud to sponsor International Women’s Day in conjunction with the Canowindra Phoenix and YBM.
Care Factor- We care about our members
and love to help them to achieve their goals.
First Choice can provide assistance by providing booklets on budgeting, set up budget

Pearls of Wisdom
Youth Work Program Big on Jobs and
Training but What About the Pay?
If you’re aged between 17 and 24 and you
have an urge to serve the Canowindra and
regional community, the army wants you.
The Green Army, that is.
And as a volunteer you could be working
along the banks of the Belubula River this
coming winter making sure it’s clear of rubbish, debris and weeds that could cause
damaging floods in the future.
The Green Army is an Australia-wide voluntary program which is being launched in July
to “encourage and train young people in local environment and heritage conservation
projects.”
Says Calare MP John Cobb: “The projects
include activities such as cleaning up riverbanks and creek beds, re-vegetating remnant
vegetation, fencing vegetation areas, removing rubbish and weeds, habitat enhancement
and pest animal control.”
The Belubula River clean-up is one of six
local projects cited for the Calare electorate,
and local Green Army teams will be among
an initial 250 going into action this year, ris-
ing to 1,500 projects and 15,000 participants a year from 2018-19.
“The participants will be paid an allowance and gain valuable skills in conservation management, teamwork and discipline
in waking up each morning and committing
to work,” says John Cobb.
But there’s a catch. The scheme is aimed
at getting kids off the dole, and the “allowance” could be as little as half the minimum
wage -- $300 a week compared with the
$620 a week minimum. And they won’t be
fully covered by national workplace laws.
As the ACTU comments: “If these jobs actually exist, then they should be advertised;
they should be structured so they are wellpaid, safe jobs.”
Few people would deny that anything that
provides jobs for unemployed youth is a big
step up for them and the community.
But why not pay them a statutory wage?
What do you think?

Cec has been living in and around Canowindra now for most of his live, with the last 15
years living in town, when he moved from his
farm. He retired in 2003 and then went on to
manage a farm out at Mandurama.
On Friday of this week he and his wife will
be moving to Cowra to reside in the Bilyara
Retirement Village, in an independent living
section. They have been married for 52 years
which is a good reason to celebrate.
Cec has loved working hard all his life, and
with the farm he cherished being out in the
fresh air, and being able to make all his own
decisions.
He starts his day by just getting out of bed
and then having breakfast. What makes is
day is helping people and being happy. He
is involved in many charities including the
Men’s Shed, Golden Oldies and the Food
Basket as well as the Co-operating Churches
of Canowindra. Cec and his wife also started
the Canowindra Markets back in 2002 which
have evolved to become the Moorbel Markets.
He has two children, 3 grandchildren and
loves a good coffee, whether it be a Bills
Beans from Finns Store or a flat white from
the Deli Lama.

GREEN Thumb
GREEN THUMB by Ian Rogan
Well, your rain dances or prayers for rain
which I requested in my last Green Thumbs
column worked. What a turnaround in a
month!
Moist soil and more pleasant autumn daytime temperatures stimulate gardeners to
begin planning for next spring’s garden colour. Plants which grow from bulbs (or corms
or tubers) planted in autumn are great because they require little or no maintenance.
They appear from nothing in late winter/
early spring and surprise us with masses of
colour in a short time. Many of these plant
species are tough and can be grown successfully in shaded garden beds, rockeries,
as borders and in all sorts of pots and containers.
Gladioli, hyacinth, lilium, daffodils, ranunculas, tulips, freesias, iris and jonquils are
ones we all know well, but I thought I would
discuss two other bulb based plants that are
less widely known but which produce beautiful colour from massed plantings at a time of
year when there is not much other colour in
the garden-crocus and nerine.
Crocus can be autumn or early spring flowering. Dutch crocus produce goblet shaped
flowers in early spring on thin stems of about
15cm. They come in a range of colours including purple, blue, white and yellow. The
flowers usually appear before any foliage,
which is grass like. The bulbs will multiply
and form clumps over several years which
look great when flowering.
Nerines are autumn flowering bulbs originating from southern Africa. Their strappy
leaves begin to appear from late summer or
early autumn, followed by multiple funnel
shaped flowers in clusters on stems up to
50cm tall. Flower colours range from white
to pink and orange/red.
Like most bulbs, tubers or corm based
plants, crocus and nerines can be lifted after
the leaves die back and divided after several years then planted elsewhere or in pots
around the garden.

Canowindra set for the Big Screen
Cont from pg.1
Again, Canowindra was chosen as the location for the commercial after other prospects from Braidwood to Raymond Terrace
were turned down.
Though the full budget of “Strangerland”
isn’t known at this stage, Screen Australia is
said to be backing the project as “part of a
$32.3 million feature support package” and
it describes the movie as having a “strong
creative potential and massive A-list potential.” (Variety)
Other finance has come from Screen NSW
and the Regional Filming Fund.
There’s no doubt, also, that a project of this
size is going to inject quite a lot of money
into the Canowindra economy.
Though we don’t know how many production staff will be here for the actual staging and filming, it’s known that the NSW
production spend is nearly $5.5 million and
foresees 227 jobs.
All in all, it’s going to be another tremendous excitement for Canowindra – the town
that’s always got so many surprises up its
sleeve.
Let’s make it a warm, pleasant and rewarding surprise for the film-makers too.

Canowindra Junior Rugby League
Congratulations to Rivers Road and Mr Embroidery for winning their finals games and
making it through to the grand finale. They
will join Central Motors and Wildcats next
week to see which 2 teams will be capped
champions of 2014 Canowindra Touch Football.
Both games were extremely close, Rivers
Road and S&S were tied 3 each then with a
minute to go Rivers Road were able to cross.
Fire Brigade left it until full time to cross on
the buzzer taking their score to 4 all and the
game into extra time. Mr Embroidery capitalised on this and scored in the corner to go
through to the last round.
Next week, Monday 10th March, will be
the A & B grand finals. Both games will be at
6.30pm followed by a BBQ and presentation
at the Canowindra Golf Club. All players are
invited to come along and watch the games
and grab a sausage afterwards.
