Health Sciences Programs Expand
Three New Bachelor of Science Degree Programs Focus on Employers’ Needs
Rehabilitation Sciences
The Bachelor of Science program in Rehabilitation Sciences
(BS in RS) is scheduled to begin in the Summer, 2016 quarter.
This innovative hybrid program offers students the opportunity
to support individuals with disabilities to regain functional independence. The BS in RS program provides an advanced degree
for students who possess an associate in science degree in health
care or related fields.
This program will be delivered in a hybrid format with students
meeting on campus approximately five times per quarter (every other
week), allowing them to complete their education utilizing a flexible
schedule. Using assistive technology interventions, students will
engage in hands-on learning to maximize an individual’s activities
within his or her home, work, school and community environments.
Health Care Management
The Bachelor of Science program in Health Care Management (HCM/BS) will
begin in the Spring, 2016 quarter. The Health Care Management program is a specialized
bachelor of science degree program for students who have a minimum of an associate in
science degree in the health care field. This program is designed to prepare graduates
for entry-level managerial careers in health care and incorporates the latest innovations,
managerial techniques and theory into a practical 18-month program.
The program features courses in the core areas of health care systems that include
health care law, economics, marketing, and finance, as well as public health, quality
improvement and risk management. Key features of this program include an optional
internship in a health care setting and a capstone project where students work with a
faculty member to develop and present an in depth project that focuses on a particular
topic incorporating knowledge gained throughout the program.
Health Care Management graduates will be prepared for employment as managers or
assistant managers to support strategic planning, budgeting, and quality improvement
or as supervisors of a program or department in long term care facilities, hospitals,
public health, home health care, community health, mental health centers and other
health related venues.
Students will work with inter-professional team members as they
advance their knowledge in disability rights, services and advocacy.
Courses in physical rehabilitation, assistive technology and
occupational science prepare students for career advancement in
health care, patient advocacy, or graduate studies in occupational
therapy, engineering-related fields, sports medicine, architectural
design or physical therapy (specific general education coursework
in the sciences is required for application to physical therapy
graduate programs). Individuals who have obtained certification
as an Occupational Therapy Assistant may be eligible, upon partial
completion of the BS in RS program, for advanced standing in
the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program
offered at NEIT.
Health and Wellness
The Bachelor of Science program in Health and Wellness (H&W) is scheduled
to begin in the Spring, 2016 quarter. This program will prepare students to assist people of all ages to achieve and sustain health and wellness. Students learn how to coach
and educate clients using an innovative system rooted in the latest bio-psychosocial
sciences. Students may enter the Health and Wellness program upon graduation from
high school or matriculate from related associate in science degree programs.
The curriculum includes wellness and prevention, change management (cognitive
and behavioral), professional health and wellness coaching, client/patient engagement
and activation, collaborative leadership and culture transition, personalized health,
practical health and wellness workplace challenges, and health care’s Affordable Care
Act and associated Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). Live simulation is incorporated into most core courses and may include guest faculty presentations.
The senior Internship and Capstone Integrated Experience course includes a practicum
and a final presentation and paper which provide an opportunity for students to reflect
upon the knowledge and skills gained throughout the program. Students will be taught
to conduct primary field research assessing the effectiveness and demonstrating the

Automotive Grad Follows Her Passion
Brittaney Lanphear graduated from New England Institute of Technology in September, 2015, with an Associate
in Science degree in Advanced Automotive Technology. She is making her mark in the automotive repair industry, a
field that is predominately comprised of male automotive technicians. Brittaney shares her passion for her work as
well as the respect and empowerment she has so rightly earned.
What made you decide to attend NEIT for
your degree?
I had an interest in automotive repair.
Upon investigating educational programs
in my general area of interest, I found that
New England Tech offered an automotive
program that met my needs.
How did you choose your program?
I received several invitations to attend
Tech Nites to explore the many educational
programs offered at NEIT. I was intrigued
by the programs and the quality of the
technology available within NEIT’s educational environment to facilitate the learning
experience.
What did you do to get started with your
career?
I have several family members and friends
who completed programs at New England
Tech and are now successfully employed
in their fields of study. In addition, upon
recommendation of a friend, I contacted a
representative at NEIT who provided me
with options that met my academic needs.
Tell us about your current position.
As of August 11, 2015, I have been
employed as an automotive technician at
Mulzer’s Car Care Inc. in North Kingstown,
Rhode Island. I acquired this position prior
to my graduation from NEIT’s Automotive
Technology program. At this establishment,
we encounter a variety of makes and models
of vehicles. I work as a member of a team of
professionals who provide support to each
other when necessary.
true sense of accomplishment and empowerment for women. I never worry about being
stranded on the side of the road with a faulty
vehicle and feeling helpless.
In my current place of employment, I
have experienced many positive interactions
with my fellow workers. Co-workers have
shared tools, offered words of encouragement, and assisted me with difficult jobs.
I have also been invited to help others on
challenging jobs.
What do you feel ultimately prepared you
for your position?
The real life experience shared through the
Automotive Technology professors at NEIT
was of utmost importance to me. I not only
learned how to use technology and tools, but
I also learned to anticipate events that could
occur related to specific situations.
Do you have any advice for graduates
who are just beginning their job search?
It is my recommendation to meet a potential employer in person, demonstrating genuine interest in the position you are pursuing.
What advice would you give to encourage
other women to join the automotive field?
The work setting provides change and new
challenges on a regular, if not daily, basis.
The automotive field is rich with employment
opportunities. This type of work provides a
What can current students do to better
prepare themselves for jobs in this field?
Students should open themselves to opportunities to practice skills related to the
field. If automotive work is truly the student’s
field of interest, he/she should begin acquiring
the necessary tools for employment. Students
should be organized and maintain their tools
and equipment.

NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Scholarship Recipients Are Honored
A Message from
President
Richard I. Gouse
Greetings to all. I would like to share
some exciting news regarding the
programs and projects taking place at
New England Institute of Technology.
We are proud to announce that New
England Tech’s online bachelor’s
degree programs were ranked #1 in
Rhode Island, #3 in New England, and
#49 nationally out of 1200 programs
reviewed by U.S. News & World Report
and outlined in its 2016 Best Online
Programs directory. Today, more and
more students and professionals are
turning to online programs to earn an
advanced degree. Our diverse range
of both bachelor’s and master’s level
online degree programs offers individuals the opportunity to earn their degrees
while balancing the demands of work
and family.
Our program offerings continue to
grow with the addition of three new
courses of study in the health sciences
field. Beginning this spring, NEIT will
offer Bachelor of Science degree
programs in Rehabilitation Sciences,
Health Care Management and Health
and Wellness. These programs have
been developed in response to employers seeking well-versed, technically
trained employees in specialized fields
within the health care industry.
On the campus development front,
construction of our new 416-bed residence hall is well underway as well as
the 40,000-sq. ft. addition to the main
building at the East Greenwich campus.
The concrete footings and foundations
have been placed, insulated and backfilled. The structural steel for the building frame is scheduled to arrive in late
February. We are eager to fully resume
these projects once spring arrives.
We have much to be proud of as
we continue our mission of providing New England Tech students with
the knowledge and skills they need to
make positive contributions in today’s
competitive labor market.
On December 4, 2015, Senior Vice President and Provost, Dr. Douglas H. Sherman awarded scholarships ranging from $500
to $2,500 to more than 80 outstanding New England Tech students for their academic achievements. The awards consisted
of scholarships established either by the generosity of numerous donors including the NEIT Alumni Association, specific NEIT
departments, several trade organizations, or as memorial scholarships to honor a friend, staff member, or faculty member
of the university.
Students had the opportunity to meet and personally thank many of the donors who participated in the awards presentation
for their generosity. Following the ceremony, family, friends and honored guests were invited to a reception to celebrate this
important occasion. Congratulations to the following students:

in January, and New England Institute of
Technology (NEIT) has earned the No.1
spot in Rhode Island for its online
bachelor’s degree
programs (January
12, 2016). NEIT
was also ranked 3rd
in New England, and 49th nationally. In its
fifth year, the 2016 Best Online Programs is
a resource used by millions of domestic and
international students to compare the academic quality of more than 1,200 bachelor’s
and master’s level distance degree programs
offered at colleges and universities across
the country.
Online learning is an integral part of higher
education as many students and working
adults seek online education programs to
complete their degree or advance their career
while maintaining a flexible schedule that
suits their lifestyle.
To be considered in the bachelor level rankings, only degree-granting programs offered
predominately online at regionally accredited
colleges and universities were reviewed.
The methodologies used are based on such
factors as faculty credentials and training,
student services and technology, and student
engagement. For more information on the Best
Online Programs rankings and methodologies, visit www.usnews.com/online.
Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, NEIT’s Senior
Vice President and Provost, stated “To earn
the recognition of being Rhode Island’s #1

Information Technology
Students Serve as Tutors
For six weeks of the fall quarter, NEIT offered a basic
computer skills program and job readiness class to eight students
with special needs referred to NEIT from Resources for Human
Development of Pawtucket, RI. The Information Technology
(IT) Department and the Academic Skills Center collaborated
to develop the program which included teaching how to use
Word, Power Point, an Excel appointment calendar, a Cisco
phone, how to send an email and create a memo.
Four NEIT Information Technology students, Paige Desrosiers, David Bienkiewicz, Ryan Silva, and Preyas Thakkar,
worked each week as a tutor and coach and shared their
knowledge with the students to enhance their office skills for
future employment. The students were very appreciative and
learned a great deal from their tutors. The program concluded
with a small ceremony at which the students and tutors were
recognized by NEIT faculty and staff for their participation in
the program. Since this program was so successful, plans are
underway to offer it again in the spring.
On December 2, 2015, the Architectural Building Engineering
Technology department held the “Faculty Awards for Excellence
in Design” for the Summer quarter 2015, to recognize students
who have excelled in design studio work for the previous quarter. The faculty nominates students who demonstrate superior
creativity, imagination, sensitivity and technical competency.
The nominees were students in the Interior Design (ID) and
Architectural Building Engineering (ABT) programs: Angela
DaCosta (ID) and Ian Olson (ABT) Team for Senior Thesis; Kimberly
Gammell (ID) Senior Thesis; Lindsey-Leigh Maiuri (ID) Senior
Thesis, and Michelle Satori (ABT) Senior Thesis. The winner
was Lindsey-Leigh Maiuri. Her project was Renovation of the
Park Square Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts. Pictured from left:

approximately $144,000. The award will be used to purchase an automated welding system for the Shipbuilding/Marine Trades and Advanced Manufacturing (SAMI) program, as well as a diagnostic and information
system for the Automotive Technology program.
Established in 1932, The Champlin Foundations has distributed nearly $480 million to various non-profit
organizations almost entirely in the state of Rhode Island. “We are very grateful to The Champlin Foundations for its continued generosity over the past 15 years,” stated Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, NEIT Senior Vice
President and Provost. “Champlin’s continued support enhances the university’s goal to provide our students
with a high quality, hands-on technical education preparing them to enter today’s competitive labor market.”

the event were Cardi’s Furniture & the Rhode Island Design Center,
General Dynamics Electric Boat, and National Lumber.
Employer Networking Night Was a Hit
On January 20, 2016, the Career Services Office teamed
up with the Architectural Building Engineering Technology
Department to host its first Employer Networking Night. Architectural Building Engineering, Construction Management,
and Interior Design students and alumni were invited to speak
with representatives from 16 industry employers who shared
their experiences with the attendees. Thirteen NEIT alumni
returned to campus to represent their employers at the event!
The event was deemed a great success. Christian
Naula, a NEIT ‘11 Construction Management graduate
representing Colt Builders, stated, “We definitely saw
some interest and what we were looking for. I think it
is a good idea to keep the event small like it was so we
can have more one-on-one interaction with the students.”
Harris Rebar’s Joe Neal said, “We spoke with many prospective candidates for our company. We have hired several
students over the past 10 years from NEIT and are impressed
with the knowledge and understanding the students come out
of NEIT (with) ready to tackle the job market.”
“We are so glad that we took the time to attend. It was
a great experience,” stated CAM HVAC & Construction, of
Smithfield, RI. In fact, a graduate from NEIT’s Construction
Management program attending the event was hired to work
for the company by noon the next day!
New England Tech would like to thank all those who attended and helped make this event such a success.
SAMI Expands
Training Programs
CALLING ALL ARTISTS
On February 8, 2016, the Shipbuilding/Marine and
Advanced Manufacturing Institute (SAMI) added a Shipfitting training program to its current Welding and Advanced
Manufacturing offerings. Developed in collaboration with
industry employers including Electric Boat, the new 210-hour
curriculum and lab were designed to replicate a real world
work environment. Students will acquire basic skills in fabrication assembly, layout, burning, grinding and tack welding.
Ten participants were selected for the first Shipfitting
training program based on the outcomes of an evaluation
process that included an orientation, math and reading
assessments, hands-on skills evaluations and case management meetings. Instructors Joseph Mandoux and Charlie
Zwolenski have 70 years of combined shipfitting experience. SAMI also focuses on work readiness skills and safety
procedures in the delivery of all of its training programs.
Each participant receives the OSHA-10 certification.
For more information on New England Tech’s
SAMI programs, call 401-739-5000, ext. 3700, or visit

Kudos to FIRST® Tech
Challenge Winners
New England Tech’s Center for Automotive Technology in Warwick, Rhode Island, was the setting for the 10th
annual FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science
and Technology) Tech Challenge held on Saturday, January
30, 2016. The competition began in September, 2015, when
56 middle and high school robotics teams registered to participate in this high-energy competition. Through a series of
three qualifier tournaments held on December 5th, December
19th, and January 9th, the top 33 teams advanced to the state
competition on January 30th.
The 2015-2016 game, FIRST® RES-Q, is a dynamic rescuethemed challenge. Each team is required to use the authorized
FIRST® kit to design and build its robot. These robots are
powered and controlled by two android devices that demonstrate
new technology. Robots score points by clearing a debris field,
rescuing climbers, climbing a mountain, hanging from a cliff,
and resetting a rescue beacon. Teams are scored based on the
effectiveness of their robot, the power of collaboration and the
determination of students.
Congratulations to the following top three teams advancing
to the FIRST® East Super Regional Competition to be held at
the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania in March: Aquidneck
Island Robotics, North Kingstown High School, and Westerly
High School. All regional winners from across the country
will later compete at the FIRST® World Championship in St.
Louis, Missouri in April.
FIRST® awards were also presented to the competitors
based on criteria utilized throughout the process of building
their robots. Congratulations to Aquidneck Island Robotics,
winners of the Inspire Award; Bishop Hendricken High School,
winners of the Think Award; North Kingstown High School,
winners of the Connect Award; East Greenwich High School,
winners of the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award; Renegade
Robotics, winners of the PTC Design Award; Mount Hope
High School, winners of the Motivate Award; The Fellowship,
winners of the Promote Award; and Wheeler Upper School,
winners of the Control Award.
For more information on the FIRST® Tech Challenge

March 1-3, 2016
On January 28, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament was
held at the Kent County YMCA. This event was
hosted by the NEIT Rotaract Club. The Rotaract
Club members kept score, operated the time clock
