ONE NEW ENGLAND TECH BLVD. EAST GREENWICH, RI 02818-1205 Non-Profit Organization U. S. Postage Paid Permit No. 431 Warwick, R. I. TECHNEWS 75 Years NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Summer 2015 Exciting New Programs Coming to NEIT ITON LINE M A S T E R S As the college’s Master of Science Degree program in Information Technology (IT) enters its fourth year this Fall, it will now be expanded to offer students the option of completing their degree entirely online. The Information Technology program is designed for IT professionals who want to advance their knowledge in the field as a precursor for management positions in the IT industry. Each term, students may now select their courses in a traditional Master’s Information Technology Program Now Online classroom environment, totally online, or in a hybrid combination of classroom and online offerings. To be an effective Information Technology leader, a blend of operational and technical expertise, leadership and management of projects and teams, and a solid foundation in the principles of general management is required. The program’s mission is built around the components that comprise an organization’s informational infrastructure: the software applications that support the business processes, the information and data sources used to store data, the processes used to secure the data, the network used to access data and applications, and the people who design, Paramedic Technology Begins This Fall NEIT’s Associate in Science Degree program in Paramedic Technology is scheduled to begin this October. Paramedic practice is grounded in paramedic science, natural sciences, social sciences, technology and humanities. This new program prepares individuals for careers as pre-hospital care providers for individuals needing medical attention. Students with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license, as well as those individuals who need to obtain an EMT license, may enroll. Paramedics work in the fast-paced world of emergency medicine in rescue vehicles and emergency rooms as well as in doctors’ offices and other health care facilities. Paramedics focus on quality healthcare by providing for the needs of their patients while advocating and educating patients, families and communities. They educate people to take proactive measures to ensure they maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Paramedic Technology program has been designed to offer non-licensed students the opportunity to earn an EMT license in a separate preliminary quarter. These students must then successfully complete the EMT licensure exam by the third quarter in order to continue with the Paramedic Technology program. Throughout the curriculum, students will engage in clinical and laboratory experiences to complement classroom learning while acquiring paramedic knowledge as well as clinical, communication, and clinical reasoning skills. Licensed EMT graduates of the Paramedic Technology program are prepared to work in a wide variety of emergency settings as well as hospitals, outpatient facilities, healthcare clinics, long-term care facilities, public health organizations and home health care. In addition, individuals are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician paramedic level exam. manage and implement the applications, data and the network. New England Tech’s IT program weaves technical topics such as network architecture, cloud computing and data analytics with finance, law, project management and leadership. The program provides individuals with the ability to analyze business scenarios, anticipate and respond to a continuously changing environment and effectively assign resources that make up the organization’s information system. Employment opportunities for graduates of this program may include Project Manager, Chief Information Officer, Chief Technical Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, Network Manager and Systems Integrator. Mechanical Engineering Grad Shoots for the Moon! Alexandrea Pimental graduated from NEIT in May, 2015, with an Associate in Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. This Fall, she will combine her passion for physical fitness and mechanical engineering as she continues her studies at Brown University where she will work towards completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomechanical Engineering. A U.S. Navy Veteran, Alexandrea’s ultimate goal is to one day become an astronaut. There are many steps Alexandrea must complete on her journey to becoming an astronaut. This very ambitious and extremely focused young woman shares her insights with Tech News readers. What made you decide to attend NEIT for your degree? When I graduated from Cumberland High School in 2006, I decided to join the U.S. Navy rather than head right off to college as many of my friends did. In October of that same year, I enlisted in the Navy and shipped off to boot camp for eight weeks in Great Lakes, Illinois, in February, 2007. From there, I trained in Pensacola, Florida, to become a Cryptologic Technician (CT). I served as a CT for two years at Fort Meade, Maryland, and for three years in Kunia, Hawaii. During my time in Hawaii, I volunteered to deploy to Baghdad, Iraq, for six months. I then returned to Kunia to complete my tour of duty. Upon separation from the Navy, my original plan was to continue working for the government as a civilian. While I was waiting to get hired for a government-contracting job, my brother, who graduated from New England Tech in March 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Building Engineering Technology, suggested I take a look at the many programs offered at NEIT. Both my fiancé and I found programs that we were interested in pursuing and enrolled in October, 2013. New England Tech’s quarter system allowed us to begin classes immediately. We both graduated in May, 2015. Interestingly enough, my fiancé earned the “Best of Tech” award for the Software Engineering program. How did you choose your program? I chose the Mechanical Engineering Technology program for a couple of reasons. First, I researched the possibility of working at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI, and when doing so, I learned that many of the employ- ees had mechanical engineering degrees. My ultimate goal is to one day become an astronaut, and once again I found that many astronauts have mechanical engineering degrees. NEIT’s hands-on approach to Mechanical Engineering was of great interest to me. I was impressed with the level of critical thinking, creativity, and excitement that I felt while involved in this program. What is the next step for achieving your career goals? My Associate in Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology has afforded me the opportunity to attend Brown University this fall. I am able to design my own concentration, Biomechanical Engineering, which will take me approximately three years to complete. I am also a personal trainer certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), so by combining my interest in mechanical engineering and fitness, my focus at Brown will be designing exercise equipment for astronauts to use during long duration space flights. The competition to become an astronaut is fierce. In 2013, there were 6,000 NASA applicants, of which only 8 were accepted. No one is born an astronaut. My approach toward being accepted into the astronaut-training program will involve learning a specialized skill that is necessary in helping develop our space exploration program. My niche will focus on engineering machines that promote exercise physiology in extreme environments. By combining my enthusiasm of mechanical engineering and fitness to improve the health of astronauts while in space, it is my hope that one day I will be selected for the astronaut program. There are many steps before reaching the point of a qualified applicant: an internship at NASA, continuous training in the gym, researching the effects of muscle atrophy and loss of bone density in microgravity, earning a master’s degree, and gaining related job experience. Each step of my journey will encompass heightened levels of discomfort, new challenging goals, and lessons that I find inspiring. See Engineering Grad, page 2 Page 2 NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Best of Tech 2015 NEIT’s outstanding 2015 Best of Tech award recipients were recently honored at the 18th Annual Best of Tech ceremony. Engineering Grad—continued from front page How did your degree from NEIT ultimately prepare you for your career choice? My experience at New England Tech was extremely positive in many ways. The professors were great teachers and mentors in the classroom, the labs, and through the Quadricycle Club where I served as Club President. The hands-on training and freedom to choose our design projects allowed me to delve into my many areas of interest. Because of my leadership skills, I was asked to serve as a peer tutor and assisted fellow students in Introduction to Engineering with lessons, homework and lab assignments during the Spring, 2015 quarter. I was so pleased to be asked to continue to work with students enrolled in the Statics course now being offered during the Summer quarter. Do you have any advice for graduates just beginning their job search? Constantly update your resume! New skills are developed with each completed quarter. By keeping a running resume, it becomes clear which aspects of the program you feel most competent in, and what skills need to be sharpened. It is important to work towards a career in which you can contribute effectively and improve upon the methods currently being used. Understanding what motivates you can help determine which type of career that fits best for you. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in their field? Get the most out of your education! With each class, fully understand the information being presented. In my technology, it is important to learn how everything works and how specific figures are derived. Always strive to go above and beyond with each assignment and project. With this approach it will become clear where your passion lies.
