During the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles five-year strategy announcement earlier in the year, we learned that a new Charger SRT will be launched for the 2015 model year, complete with a supercharged engine. This led to speculation that the supercharged engine destined for the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT would be none other than Chrysler’s new Hellcat, a supercharged 6.2liter V-8 good for 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. We’ve just driven the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT equipped with the Hellcat, and yes it’s just as insane as you'd expect a rear-wheel-drive coupe with 707 horses u n d e r t h e h o o d t o b e . Now we have semi-official confirmation that the 2015 Charger SRT will be just as bonkers. First noted by Road & Track, the SAE filing for the Hellcat’s power rating mentions both the 2015 Challenger SRT and 2015 Charger SRT. This means that the 2015 Charger SRT Hellcat is destined to be the most powerful sedan to ever hit the market. By comparison, the V-12-powered Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG is currently the most powerful four-door on the market, and it produces ‘only’ 621 hp. Prototypes for the 2015 Charger SRT have already been spotted. The new muscle sedan is likely to make its debut at the end of the year and go on sale shortly after. Note, production may be limited, so if you’re interested in one you had better start getting real friendly with your local Dodge dealer. Factory lightweight Dodge D-Dart Trans-Am car heads to auction from Hemmings.com In 1966, Dodge offered buyers a performance-enhanced version of its Dart, built specifically for D Stock drag racing. With a little bit of work, a few enterprising road racers discovered that these cars were competitive in the SCCA’s new Trans-American Sedan Championship series, and a few D-Darts were converted to go fast in other than a straight line, running alongside their more conventional Dart brethren. A mere 50 Dodge D-Darts were built in total, and only a handful were ever run in the SCCA’s Trans Am series; next month, the 1966 Dodge D-Dart once reportedly raced by “Johnny Dart” heads to auction in California. Based upon the two-door Dodge Dart GT with the 273cu.in. V-8, the D-Darts were delivered to dealers with performance upgrades that included Racer Brown valve springs, a hotter Racer Brown camshaft, a Holley 4160 four-barrel carburetor, Doug Thorley headers (in the trunk for owner installation), and a low-restriction air cleaner. The net result was an output of 275 horsepower, 40 more than was available with the highest output 273- PAGE 5 cu.in. V-8 otherwise available in Dodge’s catalog. Getting that power to the ground was the responsibility of a Weber clutch, a four-speed manual transmission, 8 3/4–inch SureGrip rear differential and a heavy-duty suspension. Lacking was any kind of warranty coverage, since Dodge was well aware of how its D-Darts would be used (or abused) by owners. All D-Darts were delivered with white paint and a red interior, and surprisingly little was done in the interest of weight savings aside from deleting the radio and center console. Most racers quickly took out the installed heater and associated plumbing, saving an additional 18 pounds of weight. For competition in the SCCA’s Trans-Am series, introduced in 1966, drivers were allowed to install a roll bar (later, a roll cage was mandated), remove the bumpers, gut the interior, open the exhausts, change the wheels (as long as a factory-available width and diameter were retained) and add a racing seat. Even without a significant amount of development and minus the D-Dart’s engine package, the Dart proved competitive in its new role when Bob Tullius and Tony Adamowicz captured victory in the Over Two Liter Class, behind the wheel of a Dodge Dart, in the very first Trans-Am race at Daytona, Florida. Proving that the Daytona race win was no fluke, Tullius and Adamowicz followed up by taking victory in a 24-hour endurance event with the Group 44 Dart at Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland. The Dart’s moment in the Trans-Am sun was short-lived. Despite the model’s two wins in 1966, Ford took the championship that season and followed up with a second championship in 1967. The following year, 1968, the Chevrolet Camaro was the car to beat, and by that time, Dodge was out of the running for the Trans-Am manufacturer’s championship.
