through nutrition.
utrition is our history, our philosophy and our
future — Purina has provided safe and high
quality nutrition for pets for 90 years. We strive
daily to expand our knowledge and push ourselves to
discover new ways to deliver tangible benefits for pets and
focus on cutting-edge nutrition that nurtures the whole
pet, inside and out.
Research and Development
We develop our pet foods and treats under the
supervision of more than 500 pet experts globally,
including nutritionists, veterinarians, behaviorists and
immunologists, who use their expertise daily to enrich our
knowledge about pet nutrition and care.
Drawing on their collective knowledge, Nestlé Purina
scientists all over the world, who are part of Nestlé’s
leading worldwide research and development network,
share information and results that direct decisions in the
development process from the field to the food bowl. Our
experts exhaustively study many areas of pet health to
help give dogs and cats better lives through nutrition.
Ensuring Safety and Quality from
Source to Bowl
For 90 years, innovation in pet care has been
a foundation of our culture, and that will
continue long into the future. Pets are part of the
family, and many of us at Purina are pet owners,
too. Ultimately what drives us is true innovation that
helps our pets and your pets lead longer, healthier
lives and helps us shape the future of pet care.”
We design and validate scientific methods that enable us
to put exceptional quality and safety standards into action
at every Nestlé Purina facility. We consider formulation,
production and quality control equally important.

Nestlé Purina is passionately committed to the safety,
health and well-being of dogs and cats, and we are proud
that our meticulous standards have made us an industry
leader in this important area.
All Nestlé Purina facilities follow the Nestlé Quality

checkpoints through each step of the production process,
from incoming ingredients to finished products. The
NQMS is aligned with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) quality standards and certified by
independent auditors.
Dedicated Food Safety Team
Nestlé Purina’s dedicated food safety team at
Headquarters in St. Louis supports our factory operations
as well as customers who sell our products at retail. The

Complete and Balanced Nutrition
for Dogs and Cats
We’re committed to making high-quality, 100 percent
complete and balanced foods that dogs and cats enjoy
eating — and owners enjoy feeding. We’re always
innovating and building our knowledge leadership to find
ways to enrich the lives of pets through nutrition.
Our aim is to discover and develop
innovative solutions leading to
products that enrich the lives of pets,
delight consumers and strengthen the
bond between people and their pets.
Protecting these novel innovations, via
patents, not only validates our nutrition
solutions, but protects our right to fully
leverage and utilize our innovations.
In 2015, Nestlé Purina was granted
seven nutrition patents and filed
nine patent applications in nutrition.

Life Stages and Special Needs
People who feed Purina brands to their dogs and cats
count on the specific content, freshness, digestibility and
appealing flavor and aroma of foods that deliver optimal
nutrition for particular pet life stages and special needs.
A pet’s nutritional needs are influenced by life stage, from
puppies and kittens to adults and seniors. Feeding more
or less than optimal nutrient quantities can impact a pet’s
health, so when we develop Purina pet foods, we consider
a number of factors and pay close attention to age, special
needs and breed size.
9
We are passionate when it comes to creating the best nutrition for our pets. Purina
offers a variety of formulas for special needs, including adding medium-chain
triglycerides (MCTs) for cognitive benefits in senior dogs. It’s so rewarding to know that the
formulas with MCTs truly make an impact on the lives of senior dogs and can enhance the
relationship between them and their owners.”
— Stacy Lynn Fernandes, Nutritional Communications Manager, Canada
Pet Nutrition Focus Areas
We understand how nutrition influences a range of
important issues from weight management to aging. Here
are some of the ways we’re pushing pet nutrition forward
to help dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
Healthy Aging
Pets are a huge part of the family, and most people do
not like to think of their pets as getting older. Just like
with people, aging tends to be a gradual change, and
signs of aging are not always visible. There’s no reason
why the later years in a pet’s life shouldn’t be some of the
most rewarding. For over a decade, Nestlé Purina has
been dedicated to determining how nutrition can help
pets experience a happy, healthy life, well into their
golden years.
Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND®
A recent innovation is our work in
healthy aging that led to Purina Pro
Plan Bright Mind Adult 7+ formula, launched in 2015 in the U.S.
and Canada. Around age 7, a
dog’s glucose metabolism in the
brain begins to change, which
can affect memory, learning,
awareness or decision making.
After years of studies, our experts
have created a way to promote
alertness and mental sharpness in
senior dogs (age 7 and older).
In early 2016, we launched the
next phase of our healthy aging
work – Purina Pro Plan Bright
Mind Adult formula – to support a
dog’s cognitive health throughout
adulthood, before senior years.

Digestive Health and Microbiome
Our parent company, Nestlé, has been a pioneer in the
human food industry, learning how probiotics can benefit
digestive health – leading to many trailblazing products,
such as probiotic infant formulas, nutritional drinks for
children and yogurt for adults. This work, in turn, has
helped Nestlé Purina scientists determine how to better
support digestive health in dogs and cats, where we are at
the forefront.
Our innovative Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets® FortiFlora® probiotic supplement, specially formulated for dogs
and cats of all ages, contains a unique strain of beneficial
bacteria, known as SF68®, which has been scientifically
proven to help restore normal intestinal health and
balance. SF68 is supported by numerous clinical studies
and has been proven to help promote a healthy immune
function in dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens.
Oral Health
Just like humans, dogs and cats can experience dental
health issues, such as plaque and tartar buildup and inflamed gums. Because problems that develop in the mouth
can affect the overall health of the pet and potentially
quality of life and longevity, we offer several products that
were developed to improve dental health in dogs and cats,
including our Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental
Health™ formula, which has been awarded the Veterinary
Oral Health Council seal. Our dental products promote
removal of plaque, slow the accumulation of tartar or
promote chewing and provide a physical “brushing” effect
on the surface of the teeth.
Healthy Weight Management
Our scientists strive to find out what causes pet obesity.
Our studies to identify the factors that contribute to
maintaining a healthy weight, including diet, environment
10
and behavior, have led to the development of innovative
nutritional formulas like Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets
Overweight Management™ formula that support owners
in achieving beneficial weight goals for their pets.
Nestlé Purina studies show that a weight management
diet containing isoflavones from soybean germ meal can
decrease weight gain and body fat accumulation, help
increase metabolism, reduce markers of oxidative stress
and improve insulin sensitivity (all beneficial for dogs).
Several Purina products were created based on these
studies, including Purina ONE® Healthy Weight in the U.S.
and Purina Pro Plan Reduced Calorie available in Latin
America & Caribbean.
Healthy Early Development
Consumers want to give their pets the best start in life by
providing great nutrition. Purina has a range of puppy and
kitten formulas available in the Americas. In Latin
America, our Purina Pro Plan Puppy and Kitten formulas
contain OPTISTART®, which helps bridge the “immunity
gap” and gives the best possible start in life. The proprietary blend contains milk proteins with natural antibodies
(from colostrum) that help “wake up” the puppy/kitten’s
immune system, reinforcing the protection from the
mother to help the protective systems develop.

Dog owners have a close bond with their canine companion and want to see them live happy, comfortable lives.

Better with Pets
How do pets help us be well? And how do we help them in
return? Our third annual Better with Pets Summit held in
2015 in New York City helped answer these questions.
The daylong summit, attended by leading pet experts,
examined the emotional relationship between pets and
people, including the reciprocal effects both have on
each other, through panel discussions and experiential
exhibits.
Five educational zones showcased Nestlé Purina’s vast
expertise in pet wellness and encouraged attendees to
connect with company experts. Among the exhibits was
a dedicated room showcasing healthy environments for
cats and how a pet’s environment can impact stress levels.
The event also featured a play room for agility dogs with
wearable technology that monitored their activity as they
played and an area where attendees could see how nutrition impacts cognition and emotional wellness in pets.
Can People Make their Pets Happy?
Nestlé Purina scientists are conducting some of the first
studies of their kind into how external stimuli can generate joyful emotions in dogs.
Although scientific evidence demonstrates that owning
a pet can help lower people’s blood pressure and reduce
anxiety and depression, less is known about whether
human contact has a similarly beneficial effect on dog
and cat emotional well-being. Thermal imaging is one of a
number of noninvasive techniques Nestlé Purina scientists
are using to better understand what makes a dog experience positive changes in mood. When a dog undergoes
a change in emotional state, the blood flow to specific
regions of its body is altered, and so is temperature. Our
scientists use a thermal camera to measure these temperature fluctuations in pets’ eyes, ears and paw pads.
In one Nestlé Purina study released in 2015, the company
sent a group of people to a dog shelter in the U.S. to sit
with and pet a group of dogs for 15 minutes. The people
and the dogs had never met before, so there was no
pre-existing bond between them. The findings show that
the dogs experienced an increase in positive emotions as a
direct result of this human contact.
By identifying the internal indicators of what’s happening
emotionally in dogs, we aim to enhance our knowledge of
the most beneficial ways to interact with them.

Our Commitment to the Veterinary
Profession
Veterinarians play a pivotal role in the health and
well-being of our pets. Scientific advances in medical
therapy and innovations in nutrition have allowed the
veterinary community to offer unparalleled preventive
and therapeutic options to help our pets live longer,
healthier lives. Veterinarians remain the No. 1 influencer
of a consumer’s pet food decision and thus are critical in
providing pet owners with accurate, reliable, scientifically
supported information.
Within the Americas, Nestlé Purina has more than 80
veterinarians on staff who are dedicated to advancing
pet nutrition and forming partnerships that support the
field of veterinary medicine. Many of these partnerships
are supported through the Nestlé Purina Institutional
Development Program, in which we partner with
Purina Advisory Council
One shining example of these partnerships is the Purina
Advisory Council. The council consists of 19 worldrenowned veterinarians in medical specialties relevant to
nutrition and overall pet health, ranging from nutrition
to internal medicine to dermatology to a host of other
areas. Purina Advisory Council members represent some
of the most influential veterinary specialists in the world
working actively with Nestlé Purina to formulate our diets,
perform clinical efficacy studies and speak at national
conferences on innovative nutritional solutions.
The guidance and support of our council members
throughout the year helps Nestlé Purina to develop first-ofa-kind products backed by rigorous science. Their input is
critical to developing industry-leading partnerships with
the veterinary community.
Purina Nutrition Centers
A veterinarian and his or her staff
serve a crucial role in the health and
wellness of our beloved pets. Purina is proud
to partner with the veterinary profession in so
many meaningful ways. We believe that by
helping to advance the education, training and
support for veterinarians, our pets will be able
to live healthier, longer and richer lives.”

These partnerships help to advance our knowledge

Many of these partnerships extend far beyond pet food,
ultimately serving to enrich the bond between pets and
the people who love them.
The installation of Purina Nutrition Centers across 13
of the U.S. veterinary schools – including the facility
installed in 2015 at the Louisiana State University School
of Veterinary Medicine – represent an unparalleled
commitment to advancing the role of nutrition in the care
and well-being of pets. These innovative centers highlight
the important role of nutrition in managing both healthy
and sick pets, ultimately resulting in a more integrated
educational program and an improved, comprehensive
approach to veterinary care.
My collaborative endeavors with
Nestlé Purina span over 20 years.
During this period, I have witnessed a pet
food company that embodies innovation,
integrity, professionalism and transparency.
There is no other pet food company on the
planet that rivals Nestlé Purina’s outreach
and philanthropic support of student and
resident training programs, animal shelters,
veterinary conferences, sports medicine and
rehabilitation facilities, creation of diet kitchens
in universities and funding of clinical research
projects. Nestlé Purina continues to blaze the
trail being the first pet food company to market
probiotic authorized for use in dogs and cats
clinically proven to promote intestinal health
and balance and the first pet food company to
develop a truly hydrolyzed diet to nutritionally
manage food allergies in dogs. Of equal
importance, Nestlé Purina’s proactive nature to
engage a veterinary advisory board consisting
of veterinary practitioners and academicians
in their respective specialties has forged an
indelible partnership of trust, transparency and
cutting-edge advances, helping Nestlé Purina to
raise the bar even higher.”

Purina University Program
Nestlé Purina has extensive scientific and educational
programs across all U.S. veterinary schools. We provide
funding for a host of professional development initiatives,

PARTNERSHIPS MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE
Nestlé Purina is a major sponsor of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
This ongoing partnership speaks to our commitment to advancing this emerging field of medicine and
highlights the important role nutrition plays in canine health and wellness.
Further, in an effort to build the strongest nutrition-related partnership in the industry around veterinary
sports medicine and rehabilitation, we are providing support for the first-ever joint nutrition and sports
medicine and rehabilitation resident at Cornell University. The power of this partnership is highlighted by
Section Chief of Clinical Nutrition and Purina Advisory Council Member Dr. Joe Wakshlag: “Recovery is not
just about surgery, physical therapy, general medicine, or nutrition — it’s about an integrative approach with
all of these things working in concert together.”
Breeders
For many, breeding and competing are more than hobbies
— they’re a way of life. Nestlé Purina shares breeders’
commitment to their dogs, celebrates their achievements,
recognizes their expertise and supports their journey
toward further success through Purina Pro Club®.
For more than 14 years, thousands of dog breeders and
enthusiasts have participated in the Purina Parent Club
Partnership Program (PPCPP), which allows national
parent breed clubs to individually earn funding based on
Purina weight circle submissions by Pro Club members.
Purina tracks weight circle submissions, and for every

Club members, Purina donates $10 to the participating
parent breed club. One half of each club’s individual
annual earnings is issued directly to the American
Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Health Foundation (CHF) to
support research grants aimed at a better understanding
of genetics and other conditions impacting dog health.
The other half is issued to the individual national parent
breed club for use in the support of canine health research,
education and/or rescue efforts. In 2015, our contribution
to CHF was $220,000, with an equal amount donated to
the participating parent clubs.
In addition to helping fund canine health research, the
funding donated to the individual clubs has been used
to help support educational outreach programs such
as scholarships, library support, youth programs and
conservation education programs. It also has been used to
support judges’ education seminars, to produce breedspecific educational materials and to produce responsible
dog ownership materials.

W
e believe that a healthy environment and
society contribute to the health and well-being
of pets and people.
Our guiding light is simple: Do the right thing. Nestlé
Purina has been, and always will be, committed
to continuous improvement. It is our responsibility
to understand where our greatest impacts to the
environment and society exist and to have the courage
to commit ourselves to continuous improvement toward
sustainability to address those impacts in every step of our
value chain.
Managing What Matters Most
In 2015, Nestlé Purina completed a full corporate Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the U.S. business, giving us a
comprehensive view of our total environmental footprint.
15
Based on the results of the LCA, our sustainability team,
which includes internal professionals from across the
company in consultation with external experts, built a
sustainability roadmap to address what matters most to
the environment and society and identified how we can
best add value and make the biggest positive influence.
Our responsible sourcing commitment is to ensure
that raw material sources are dedicated to continuous
improvement toward sustainability and that supply chains
are transparent and raw materials can be traced back to
their origin to the extent it is possible. Our mandatory
Supplier Code is shared with every vendor and details the
minimum requirements that suppliers must meet to supply
Nestlé Purina. To ensure compliance, we measure our
progress through annual supplier audits. In 2015, Nestlé
Purina completed 32 audits helping Nestlé exceed its goals
at 111 percent of our target.
Our commitment to responsible sourcing is also about
assessing the supply chain and the origin against our
Responsible Sourcing Guidelines (RSG), which focus
on critical social and environmental issues. Working
alongside NGO partners, we map our supply chains in the
U.S. and globally to ensure that procurement of priority
ingredients complies with our RSG criteria.
The following four priority categories at Nestlé Purina
are part of Nestlé’s 12 priority categories included in the
Responsible Sourcing Guidelines and where Nestlé Purina
has the most to contribute to the overall Nestlé responsible
sourcing strategy.
Responsibility Starts with Responsible
Sourcing of Ingredients
Like many food and beverage companies, Nestlé
Purina’s corporate Life Cycle Assessment shows that the
majority of our environmental impact comes from our
raw material supply chain. Additionally, consumers and
other stakeholders increasingly want to know where their
food comes from and how it was produced. Therefore,
responsible sourcing of raw materials and ingredients are
an important investment in Nestlé Purina’s future and that
of our producers and suppliers.

FISH & S EAFOOD
Fish and seafood are precious resources to our planet and all who live on it,
particularly for the people in some of the poorest countries in the world who
rely on healthy fisheries for their source of protein. At Nestlé Purina, we understand the importance
of having sustainable fisheries and healthy fish farms, as well as the immense challenges we all must
overcome to responsibly source fish and seafood. Therefore, we work closely with our suppliers to
identify, to the extent it is possible, the sources of our fish and seafood ingredients.
We provide all our global seafood purchasing information to our independent NGO partner – the Sustainable Fisheries
Partnership (SFP) – to identify and assess the wild and farmed fisheries from which our seafood supply comes, including
whole fish and fish byproduct.
We are pleased with our progress to date across the globe.

In 2015, Nestlé Purina North America focused on ensuring
that all our whole fish can be traced back to the catch vessel.
We require all our suppliers to avoid fish and seafood
ingredients that contain IUCN (International Union for
Conservation of Nature) red-listed endangered species and to
avoid any illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) seafood.
A WORD ABOUT CO-PRODUCTS: NUTRITIOUS
AND RESPONSIBLE INGREDIENTS FOR PETS
by using all the protein sources of a farm animal, while
not competing with the human food supply.
All of Nestlé Purina’s pet food products follow
complete and balanced recipes that meet the
nutritional needs of dogs and cats at each life stage
and for many health conditions. Over 500 Nestlé
Purina pet experts are behind the creation of our
recipes to provide perfectly balanced pet nutrition.
These recipes include the use of animal co-products,
which are both nutrient-dense and highly palatable.
According to a World Wildlife Fund article from its
Spring 2016 magazine, using only “human-grade pet
foods, which use prime meat cuts and other ingredients
preferred by many people, add extra pressure to a
global food system that will have to feed an estimated
9 billion people by 2050.” Nestlé Purina also recognizes
the importance of continuous improvement toward
responsible sourcing and sustainability by addressing
key issues associated with sourcing seafood, meat
and poultry such as fishery stock levels, avoiding
endangered fish species, the humane treatment of farm
animals, human rights of individuals who work in these
supply chains, and more.
Animal co-products are parts of an animal that come
from seafood, beef, pork and poultry as part of the
U.S. human food supply chain. In addition to being
nutritionally beneficial, animal co-products represent
an environmentally and socially responsible practice

Meat and Poultry: Quality Ingredients and
Humanely Raised Farm Animals
Beef, lamb, chicken and pork are all
sourced as ingredients in our pet food

To truly consider ourselves sustainable,
we must ensure that farm animals
are treated humanely throughout
their lives, and all of Nestlé’s operating companies are
committed to ensuring the highest levels of farm animal
welfare across our global supply chain. Purina and all
of Nestlé are working with World Animal Protection for
farm animal welfare to better understand the landscape
of issues and opportunities and to assess where we by
working with our suppliers can add value to the process.

Reducing Nutrients in the Wabash River Watershed
In 2015 we
supported a project
of The Nature
Conservancy,
a leading
conservation organization working around the world, to
reduce the flow of nutrients and soil sediment along the
Wabash River in Indiana and Illinois, where a percentage
of Nestlé Purina’s U.S. corn is grown.
The Wabash is a fast-moving, undammed stretch of river
that contributes 1 percent of the water volume that flows
down the Mississippi, but 11 percent of the nutrients.
Farmers throughout the Midwest are doing their part to
reduce soil and fertilizer runoff from their land.
Through this project with Nestlé Purina’s support, the
Conservancy will restore a minimum of 150 acres in the
100-year flood plain of the Wabash to woodlands and
wetlands using appropriate vegetation, including trees.
This project will be part of a much larger effort by the
Conservancy on the Wabash that will span multiple years,
thousands of acres and involve many public and private
partners. Installing wetlands and forest lands at key
junctures on the river slows the flow, allowing sediment
and nutrients to settle before the cleaner water then moves
downstream. The planted trees and vegetation help to take
up the nutrients while sequestering more carbon in plants
and the soil.
Participating landowners will
also enroll their remaining
croplands in the Fieldprint®
Calculator, an online tool
from Field To Market: the
Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, a cooperative effort
of organizations across the agricultural supply chain to
define, measure and advance sustainable food, fiber and
fuel. The calculator compares results from different farm
management choices to give growers more information in
their quest toward continuous efficiency improvements.
Nestlé Purina joined Field to Market in 2015.

Manufacturing Our Products with Less
Energy, Water, Waste and Greenhouse
Gases
Production engineers at Nestlé Purina manufacturing
sites and corporate offices are the original sustainability
practitioners at Nestlé Purina. They’ve been optimizing
use of resources in production for decades. Beyond
reducing energy, greenhouse gases, water and waste as
much as possible, we are adding renewable electricity into
the energy mix.
Our environmental management system, which is aligned
with ISO 14001 principles, sets out rigorous guidelines
and processes to ensure our facilities meet the highest
standards of environmental performance every day.
We are most proud of our efforts to reduce waste from our
operating facilities. Globally, Nestlé is focused on sending
zero waste to landfills from all operating sites. Nestlé
Purina is working on this goal as well and has so far
reduced waste to landfill by almost 18.6 percent overall in
I grew up in surroundings where wasting anything was discouraged. This perspective has
guided my work at Nestlé Purina to reduce waste in all areas – from people’s time in the form
of productivity in the workplace, to energy and water in the pet care production processes. In the
last few years, we have critically focused to reduce waste in the production process, recycling many
tons of pet food waste, paper and cardboard. We diverted a significant amount of waste to greener
destinations in 2015. This is true sustainability in action, and the most satisfying part of this is that it
was achieved and embraced by all associates as a true team effort.”
— Raj Kumar, Operations Performance Director, North America
the Americas since 2010, and five of our factories in North
America have achieved zero waste to landfill status as of
April 2016. By 2020 or sooner, all Purina plants and offices
will achieve zero waste to landfill status to align with
Nestlé’s global commitment.
Renewable Energy
We are pursuing LEED green building standards in new
construction and have already substituted cleaner burning
natural gas for diesel fuels at most manufacturing sites.
We also are using renewable power where
possible and have installed solar arrays
LEED
at four of our manufacturing sites and
one at our Headquarters campus. We use
hydroelectric power at one site in New
York and also are encouraging the public utilities where
we operate to increase their percentage of renewable
electricity. All of this leads to a reduction of greenhouse
gas emissions.

Packaging: Reducing our Footprint
Though a much smaller
portion of our overall
environmental footprint,
packaging is still an important
area to make improvements,
and it is what consumers
expect. They touch the
package, want to dispose of it
responsibly and expect the companies behind their brands
to help them do the right thing.
Packaging is essential to protect the product on its way
to consumers, and we are researching ways to keep the
packaging material in a closed-loop system so that it is
used again for other purposes.
Continuous Improvement
Our research teams are continuously improving the
sustainability of our packaging, by:
• Choosing the most protective materials to reduce
damages
19
• Light-weighting packaging materials while still
providing the essential product protection
• Pioneering the use of new types of packaging, such as
Pure Nature brand litter with a recyclable pouch, which
can be tossed in the grocery store bag collection bin
• Continually trying out new materials, such as biobased resins and mono-materials that are more easily
recycled, such as our large pet food bags that are
made of 100 percent polypropylene, which can be
reprocessed by recycled resin users into automotive
casings and paint cans
Consumer Education
We help educate consumers about
proper recycling or disposal of
our packaging in several ways,
including:
• Incorporating How2Recycle
labels into our packaging in the
U.S. These icons provide clear
instructions to consumers about
how and where to recycle different
components of a package. We began this program in
2015 and will continue to include this information in
most packaging artwork as new or refreshed packages
are printed
• Maintaining an online consumer recycling tool on
Purina.com in the U.S. to inform consumers about the
materials comprising each package, and where to recycle them in each region of the U.S.
• Running online promotions and periodic social media
reminders in the U.S. for consumers to encourage
recycling
Advancing Technology
Beyond our own packaging improvements and consumer
education to recycle appropriately, the last link in the
process is the community recycler: the material recovery
facility. These facilities are often older and not built to
handle today’s more complex materials, particularly
flexible plastics. In 2015, Nestlé Purina joined other likeminded companies to launch a research collaborative
called Material Recovery For the Future (MRFF) to explore
the feasibility and economics of adding advanced sorting
technology to material recovery facilities. The goal is
to make the material recovery facilities better able to
affordably recycle more plastics through them with the
installation of technology upgrades. This pilot just began
and could likely take multiple years, but we are hopeful it
will result in less of our packaging ending up in landfills.

Transportation: Reducing CO2 Emission
and Improving Efficiency
We are coordinating with carriers to lighten our environmental load:
• In the U.S., 88 percent of our truck and rail spend is with
contractors that are members of the EPA’s SmartWay
program, which tracks continuous energy efficiency improvements and shares best practices across transporters.
• Tidy Cats® LightWeight litter reduces the impact of
transporting that product by as much as half, when the
trucks are 100 percent full of that product.
• We converted the delivery of corn gluten meal from
truck to rail in Canada, reducing the number of trucks
on the road and greenhouse gas emitted.
• We achieved a major milestone in our continued
collaboration with UPS in 2015 by offsetting the carbon
emissions associated with transportation for every order
of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets and Purina Pro Plan
shipped by UPS to our U.S. veterinary customers. This
includes small pack orders delivered directly to clinics
as well as e-commerce orders placed through
PurinaForProfessionals.com. Through this carbon
neutral shipping program, UPS accurately measures
the carbon emissions of each shipment, then offsets
the emissions through carbon sequestration and other
projects. Nestlé Purina’s support of this program means
we’re able to be part of environmental efforts that make
a meaningful difference. We are now exploring whether
we can scale this project more broadly with other online
retailers.
In 15 months since inception, Nestlé Purina’s carbon neutral shipping initiative with UPS offset 3,648 metric
tons of carbon dioxide (MT CO2e). This is equivalent to:
Greenhouse gas emissions from
768 PASSENGER VEHICLES
driven for one year
1,308 TONS
of waste sent to a landfill; or
CO2 emissions from
410,487 GALLONS
of gasoline consumed
Put another way, Nestlé Purina’s carbon neutral shipping initiative sequesters each month the same
amount of carbon as nearly 200 acres of US forests sequester in one year.
MT CO2e based on values from UPS carbon neutral shipping initiative invoices through NOV2015 and US EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies calculator,
as of 1/7/2016 (http://www.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator)
Sustainability isn’t just a department at Purina – it is Purina. Guided by the philosophy of our founder, we focus every day on doing the right
thing in all facets of our business. The carbon neutral shipping program enables us to grow our veterinary and e-commerce businesses
without expanding our environmental impact. It’s just one more small step toward demonstrating that doing good is good for business.”

“We must act as to bring out the best in others,”
our Founder, William H. Danforth once said.
P
eople are at the center of everything we do, and
we believe everyone deserves to be treated with
dignity and respect. This begins within our own
walls and taking care of our Nestlé Purina family — at our
Headquarters, across our factories and sales offices — to
the thousands of people in the communities where we live
and work.
Nestlé Purina is an integral part of the local economies
where we operate. We know that our role in many
communities involves more than making safe, highquality food for dogs and cats, it means jobs that support
families and communities.
We’re committed to maintaining a workplace culture that
promotes safety, health, career development and equal
opportunity.
Associate Safety and Health
Management
We ensure that robust safety and health management
programs are in place at all Nestlé Purina facilities to
protect our associates and guests. In support of this,
Nestlé Purina’s St. Louis Headquarters and all factories
in the U.S., Canada and Latin America & Caribbean
maintained their certification status of OHSAS 18001, an
internationally recognized standard for occupational
health and safety management systems.
In 2015, Nestlé Purina North America
reduced recordable injuries by 41 percent
versus 2014 and lost-time injuries by 36
percent. Two of our factories achieved zero
recordable and lost-time injuries in 2015,
with 11 achieving zero lost-time injuries.
In Latin America, eight facilities had zero
recordable and lost-time incidents, nine

health training and safety awareness campaigns.
Workplace Wellness
There are significant benefits to a happy, satisfied
workforce. This is why we actively support our associates
with initiatives that help them lead a healthier lifestyle
and better manage work stress and pressure.
We’ve implemented a number of wellness strategies
to reduce illness for associates and encourage them to
take an interest in their own health, as well as provide
resources for stress reduction and overall wellness. In

Mental Health
Nestlé Purina Canada was recognized by Partners for
Mental Health in 2015 for our participation in Not Myself
Today campaign, designed to tackle the stigma of mental
illness. Not Myself Today aims to start the dialogue about
mental health at work.
Work-Life Balance
We understand that all our associates have a life outside
of work, which is why we encourage flexible working
and foster a culture based on performance, not presence.
Nestlé Purina offers more than a dozen work-life balance
programs, including Pets in the Workplace, paid time off
and a progressive Maternity Protection Policy announced
in 2015, which grants associates a minimum of 14
weeks paid maternity leave and the right to extend their
maternity leave up to six months. This policy, which
varies based on local laws in some countries outside the
U.S., is applicable to all primary caregivers of newborns
including male associates and adoptive parents. The
policy also includes employment protection and flexible
working arrangements, and some sites have dedicated
breastfeeding rooms.
In early 2016, our commitment to work-life balance was
recognized by WorldatWork, a nonprofit HR association
and compensation authority in the U.S. Nestlé Purina
became one of 116 organizations to be honored with the
Work-Life Seal of Distinction for 2016.

Project Opportunity
Connecting with Veterans
Our associates play a vital role in helping Nestlé Purina
achieve competitive advantage. Our development strategy
is designed to help associates gain the competencies and
leadership capabilities to contribute to the success of the
business, as well as develop their own careers.
In the U.S. 2015, Nestlé Purina launched Project
Opportunity, a career acceleration initiative to help people
of all ages gain work experience and strengthen their
professional development skills. Project Opportunity is
part of Nestlé’s broader efforts to develop talent for the
company and help tackle the global unemployment crisis.
Nestlé Purina is proud to offer numerous opportunities to
veterans of the U.S. military, helping them use their unique
training and skills within our organization. In 2015 we joined
Rally Point, an employment network for active military and
those who have transitioned back to civilian life. In addition,
we joined a Nestlé U.S. initiative addressing military veteran
employment, with a goal of establishing Nestlé as an
Employer of Choice among veterans.
We provide associates with a variety of self-directed
learning opportunities in addition to our 50+ development
options in the U.S., including workshops, book clubs
and coffee talks. Our U.S. associates also have access to
more than 2,800 professional development and e-learning
courses. Further, associates have access to over 6,000
research reports, journals and reference books.
In the U.S. in 2015 we introduced our new “Leaders
Leading Leaders” (L3) program, designed to meet the
needs of 330 mid- and senior-level leaders. This selfdirected program encourages leaders to come together and
explore what leaders “see, say and do,” while designing a
continuing development plan that meets their individual
needs. At the end of their first year, leaders will teach
leaders as they start to share their learnings with others in
the organization.
More than 30 years ago, I started as an
Engineering Trainee at our Davenport, Iowa,
factory. Over the years, across many of our factories
and at our Headquarters in St. Louis, I have had
the opportunity to work for and with many great
mentors and leaders. Today, I remain very involved
in our recruitment and Management Development
Trainee program. I am still energized seeing new
associates come to our organization full of great
ideas, with a skill set that will help us continue to
innovate, and I consider it one of my key priorities to
help develop these new leaders. The ability to pull
strengths from each generation and each individual
is paramount to our success going forward.”
— Bill Cooper, Vice President, Manufacturing,
North America
25
In Latin America, Nestlé Purina is working with key
opinion leaders, universities and professional associates to
strengthen key alliances for employment across the region.
Particularly, Nestlé Purina is participating in the training
of students from 102 veterinary schools in the region,
reaching more than 6,800 graduates annually. The training
builds students’ knowledge of pet nutrition and provides
administrative counsel for managing a business.
#ProjectOpportunity
After leaving active duty in 1996, I worked for
several companies over the next 5 years before
landing at Purina where I’ve been now for 14+ years.
While I learned a lot with each company, something was
missing for me — the camaraderie, if you will, that is part
of normal military life. I was looking for a work home that
would value my contributions to the team and provide
opportunities for my own professional growth and
development. It is safe to say that Purina meets those
needs.”
— Mark Donavon, Director,
Innovation and Emerging Growth Group, U.S.
At the core of PROJECT OPPORTUNITY is our commitment to train a new group of highly skilled workers through
apprenticeships. In the U.S., we focus on four key areas, highlighted among our achievements in 2015.
1. Goal: Increase the number of participants in Nestlé Purina’s Maintenance, IS and Controls (MIC) Training
program, a development program consisting of technical training for maintenance and electrical technicians,
from 41 participants to about 200 by the end of 2016. Result: 142 additional participants in our MIC program.
2. Goal: Increase the number of participants in Nestlé Purina’s factory apprenticeship program, which allows
students to apply what they’ve learned at local community colleges, master new skills and build new
competencies in Nestlé Purina’s factories. Result: eight new apprenticeship positions at select factories.
3. Goal: Continue to increase the number of college intern and management development positions available in
various functions. Result: 100 new interns and trainees hired.
4. Goal: Further enhance coaching and mentoring of students in our Headquarters community of St. Louis
through Nestlé Purina’s teen employment program, which provides leadership and employment opportunities
in the pet field to underserved teens each summer. Result: 15 local students completed a leadership program,
and 13 were placed in pet-related job sites. Three of those students indicated they were interested in a
veterinarian career path after the leadership experience. All 18 students were enrolled in post-secondary
institutions following graduation.
NEW MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN MEXICO CREATES LOCAL JOBS
In December 2015, Nestlé Purina opened a manufacturing facility in Leon, Guanajuato, and employs 200 people.
More than 90 percent of associates were hired from the local community, and every direct job in the facility creates
five additional indirect jobs. More than half of the associates were hired through Project Opportunity efforts.

Nutrition to Fuel Shelter Pets
ccording to the 2014 annual Petfinder survey, 6.7
million pets entered shelters in the U.S. in 2014.
Only 3.5 million of those pets were adopted — it’s
a heartbreaking situation. Our mission is simple: Increase
demand for shelter pets so every shelter pet can find a
loving home. In doing so, we aim to be a viable source
of information and to be known as the best, authentic
partner to shelters.
Through our Shelter Champions program in the U.S.
we provide the product needed for shelter pets at 19
foundational partner shelters across the U.S., as well
as discounts on food and litter for shelter staff to feed
their own pets. Nestlé Purina also supports many more
shelters throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America &
Caribbean with product donations.
A
Our goal is to provide long-term support for pet shelters
and increase the number of connections between pets and
people while supporting the communities where we live
and work.
Enriching the Lives of Pets: Shared
Value Shelter Partnerships
Our partnerships go much deeper than product donations
— we’re more than kibble in a bowl. High-quality nutrition
certainly helps pets feel and look their best, but we also
provide shelters with tools and resources they need
to help them get more pets adopted. Our shared value
partnerships focus on three core areas — nutrition,
marketing and education. These include:
• Helping shelter pets get the right nutrition
• Ensuring shelters have the resources to promote their
pets and match them with the perfect homes
• Helping shelter staff grow professionally

Tools and Resources for Shelters and
Rescues
To support our mantra that pets and people are better
together, we ensure shelters and rescues are equipped
with as many resources as possible to make connections
between their pets and adopters. We provide real life,
everyday tools and resources that support the tireless
efforts of those working to find homes for adoptable pets.

In 2015, we donated more than 12 million pounds
(over $23 million in retail value) of Purina pet food,
treats and litter to animal welfare organizations in
need across the U.S., Canada and Latin America &
Caribbean.
Disaster Relief
We respond to many natural disasters in the Americas
by providing product to pets in distress. In 2015 in the
U.S., we donated pallets of food to organizations in need
as a result of flooding in South Carolina and tornadoes
in Texas. In July 2015, weeks of wildfires in northern
Saskatchewan, Canada, displaced thousands of residents
and their pets. Nestlé Purina Canada provided nearly
40 pallets of puppy and adult dog food and treats to a
shelter that had taken in more than 150 dogs during the
evacuation of the areas affected.

Demonstrating our commitment to helping more pets
find homes, Nestlé Purina powers the largest pet
search engine,
Petfinder.com,
and is a sponsor of
the second largest,
AdoptAPet.com.
As the leader in the pet adoption landscape, Petfinder
engaged with 77 million unique visitors across all
platforms in 2015, which resulted in 1.6 billion page views
of adoptable pets and pet content. Over the past 20 years
Petfinder has proudly worked with over 12,000 shelter and
rescue organizations to help facilitate approximately 25
million pet adoptions.
After a Petfinder.com adoption, adopters receive a
stream of communications with tips and advice to ease
the transition during what can be a challenging time of
getting pets acclimated to their new home to ensure it
becomes the pet’s forever home.
Nestlé Purina also powers the Cosas de Perros website in

welfare organizations that facilitate adoptions and provide
pet health, wellness and nutrition advice to pet owners.

As a result of common misperceptions regarding the
health, behavior and age of shelter animals, currently
only 27 percent of household pets in the U.S.* come from
shelters. To address this, Nestlé Purina and pet shelters are
working together to make sure people get to know shelter
pets as they really are — friendly, attractive and wonderful
lifelong companions.
In 2015, Nestlé Purina provided its shelter partners in
the U.S. with “Meet the Real Me” tools, including a set of
photography guidelines and tips, downloadable posters
and a computer monitor frame to help shelters and rescue
organizations take photos that present their pets in a
more positive way. These photography kits gave shelters
the valuable tools they needed to showcase the true
personalities of their shelter pets and increase chances for
adoption.
In St. Louis, Nestlé Purina reprised the “Meet the Real
Me” campaign, featuring a series of photos in digital
advertisements around the city that showcased the beauty
and personality of shelter pets. The featured animals were
currently in – or recently adopted from – local shelter
organizations. The campaign culminated in a one-day
adoption event that brought together 12 local shelters.
Nearly 50 pets were adopted in six hours.

Education and Networking for Shelter
Professionals
Petfinder offers programs and funding to provide
shelter professionals access to information, experts
and continuing education. Adoption Options is a free,
multi-city animal welfare workshop tour across North
America that features nationally recognized speakers in
the field. The workshop is geographically customized for
employees and volunteers of animal shelters and rescue
organizations and is focused around the placement,
promotion and behavior of homeless pets. Approximately
2,000 animal welfare professionals and volunteers attend
annually. We also offer grants for shelter professionals
to attend single-day workshops on shelter medicine, pet
behavior and creative adoption and fundraising programs.
St. Louis PetLover Coalition
The St. Louis PetLover Coalition fosters collaborative
efforts of more than 50 local animal welfare groups.
Backed by Nestlé Purina, we provide the members with
networking opportunities, presentations from thought
leaders in the field and access to educational grants.
The St. Louis PetLover Coalition
has been an amazing part of
Gateway Pet Guardians’ growth and
success in reducing the number of
homeless pets in our community.
We have built and grown many
relationships in the group that
continue to work with us on every
aspect of rescue and education. Not
only has the professional networking
been key to saving lives, but I have

state-of-the-art equipment.
The computers are primarily
used by children who

Dog Parks
Nestlé Purina recognizes that dog parks are assets to the
community and can bring people and pets closer together.
We routinely lend support to organizations looking to
start a dog park or renovate an existing park in their
community through funding, knowledge sharing and
volunteerism. In 2015, Nestlé Purina opened the first dog
park in Cuautitlan Izcali, Mexico. The local Nestlé Purina
manufacturing facility helped build the dog park and
continues to help maintain it. In 2015 in the U.S., through
funding and volunteerism Purina’s Beneful® brand
supported dog park projects in 12 cities, ranging from
makeovers of existing dog parks to supporting efforts to
create new ones.

Honoring the Heroic Acts of Pets and
Service Animals
Since 1968, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame
serves as a reminder of the extraordinary bond
we share with our pets.
Every May, Nestlé Purina Canada hosts an
event that honors the heroic acts of pets and
service animals for remarkable feats of bravery
and saving the life of a human in medical
emergencies or extreme conditions. Through
their keen intuition and strong sense of duty,
they have shown they understand and are
compelled to protect us when we need them
the most.
2015’s inductees were comprised of three loyal
canine pets and one service dog. Each was
recognized for the extraordinary actions they
took to protect a human life, demonstrating
that animals can be counted on to come to
the rescue in dangerous and life-threatening
situations when people are not available to help.
Purina Walk for Dog Guides
For more than a decade, Nestlé Purina been the sponsor
of the Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog
Guides. This national event hosts 200+ walks in Canadian
communities to raise awareness and funds to provide
service dogs for those in need.
Associate Engagement
Annually, thousands of Nestlé Purina associates are
making a difference in the communities where they live
and work by offering support to local pet shelters and
other nonprofit organizations.
PetCare Pride Day
Each year, Nestlé Purina celebrates PetCare Pride Day
— a day devoted to community service at our St. Louis
Headquarters and also at many of our factory facilities
across the U.S. This is an opportunity for associates to
step away from their desks and off the production floor to
divide into teams to perform a variety of service activities.
