ABOUT CENTURY SPORTS
Century Sports, based in Lakewood, N.J., has served
the sports industry for more than 30 years.
Since 1993, Century Sports has been the exclusive
court equipment licensee of Wilson Sporting Goods
Co., offering an extensive line of innovative products
for your courts.
In 2012, Luck Companies, a Virginia company,
purchased Century Sports. Luck felt it was very
important to continue operating in New Jersey. Since
then, Century Sports has moved to a new, more
modern facility, also in Lakewood, N.J.
Our highly skilled machine operators and sewers

the highest quality and precision. Our knowledgeable

Using windscreen ties to hang your screens adds a valuable element of
protection to your facility. Ties break away when winds become too strong,
and this helps prevent fences from bending or even collapsing. If you use
something else to secure your screens to the fences, consider implementing
ties at the top and sides or bottom and sides for added safety.

and resistance are built into the fibers. Mesh size is 1 3/4" and is rated at 140 lbs breaking strength. Bound and

HOW-TO FOR TENNIS NETS
SELECTING A TENNIS NET
The type of net you choose depends on frequency of use, the length of your playing season
and the type of court surface. Courts with heavy usage and/or long playing seasons need a net
that will last and look good for a long time.
•The best nets are made of braided net cord and typically have double the mesh at the top 6
rows, side pockets for fiberglass dowels (that help hold the net taut) and vinyl-coated steel
cables.
•Braided nets are better than twisted nets because they are stronger and absorb more
energy, meaning that when a ball hits the net it drops closer to the net instead of
rebounding off it.
•Polyethylene and polyester make good net materials because they are more resistant to
fading from UV radiation and weather.
The type of court surface as well as personal preference dictates which headband is
appropriate. Headbands are usually vinyl or polyester duck, often with double layers and 4
rows of lock stitching to hold the layers together.
•Nets with polyester duck headbands are better for hard courts than for soft courts, where
surface material can easily stick to and stain the fabric.
•Vinyl headbands are more common on soft courts because they’re easier to clean and more
dirt resistant. However, balls can tend to skid wildly off vinyl headbands, which is less likely
with a duck headband, because the duck material absorbs the ball’s energy and doesn’t
speed up the ball.

Choosing your fit is a personal preference and brings a classy look to the court.

INSTALLING A TENNIS NET
1. Install the net posts and pipe anchor, making sure the anchor is installed flush with the surface and
that the pin is parallel to the net line to avoid twisting the center strap.
2. Begin installing your net by connecting the loop end of the net cable to the post cable hook/cleat
on the dead end post. If you are installing your net onto an internal-wind post, you may have to cut
the entire loop and any excel cable from the other end of the net cable depending on which internalwind post you are installing on. Do not peel back the coating because the end that goes in the
winder must have coating still on it. Pull this end of the cable over the top of the winder post, lining
up the cable with the winder mechanism. Feed the cable into the internal-winder mechanism and
begin winding until the net is a little over 3’ above the court surface at the center.
3. If you are installing your net onto an external wind post, connect one loop end of the net cable to
the post cable hook/cleat on the dead end post. Take the other cable loop and hook it onto the pin
on the crank assembly and begin winding. Continue to crank the post so that the net is a little over 3’
above the surface at the center.
4. Fit dowels/side stakes into the side pockets.
5. Install lacing cord at each end by making a 2" knotted loop on one end of the lacing cord. Run the
other end through both grommets in the headband and around the post, through the 2" loop and
back around the post in the opposite directions (see Net Lacing diagram). Continue wrapping the
cord around the post, through the lacing bars and through the grommets on the side band, applying
equal pressure as your wrap. Tie off the cord at the bottom of the post. Repeat for the other post.
Finally, install the center strap and adjust it to maintain a net height of 36" at the center.
6. When you are finished, the net should be fully extended so that it completely fills the space between
the two posts. The net height at the center of the net should be 3' and at the post end 3' 6' above
the ground. If a doubles net is used for singles play, the net should be supported to a height of 3' by
using singles sticks, which are placed 3' on center, outside the singles court on each side.
7. During the offseason or when winterizing, either remove the net or at least loosen the net cable
and center strap. It is best to remove the net posts too, along with plugging the sleeves with sleeve
covers to prevent moisture and dirt from falling in.

INSTALLING A REPLACEMENT NET HEADBAND
1.Cut off two short pieces of lacing twine and use them to secure
each end of replacement headband to each post. It is not
necessary to remove the old headband from the net.

to the opposite end. Make sure you keep the lacing cord pulled
tightly as you lace.

With internal-wind posts, the winding mechanism is inside the post and only the removable cranking handle is on
the outside of the post. This design makes internal-wind posts a safer choice, because they eliminate the danger of
catching fingers in the reel assembly, however, they are typically more expensive. Century Sports and Wilson also
offer an external-wind post that includes a ratchet guard as part of the reel assembly. The ratchet guard prevents the
possibility of getting a hand hit or face caught as the reel spins, thus making it safer than other external-wind posts.
ROUND OR SQUARE?
Our top-of-the-line post, the internal-wind Royale post, is available as either a 3" round or 3" square post. We also offer
a 2 7/8" round post with either an internal or an external winder. The shape and size of the post is a matter of personal
preference or the requirements dictated by the existing sleeves in the ground.
BLACK OR GREEN?
Color of the posts is a matter of personal preference and is often chosen to match the color of the facility’s fencing,
windscreens and nets.
SLEEVES AND SLEEVE COVERS
We strongly recommend post sleeves, as they allow the posts to be removed during the offseason or for alternative uses
of the area. Sleeve covers prevent dirt and moisture from falling into the sleeve when the post is removed.

1.When laying out court dimensions, first
establish the center line between net
posts. Locate points A and B 18' from
center point C.

are required for each end of the line.
7.At approximately 20' centers, drive a nail
at the outside of the line, anchoring the
line with the nail head.
8.Starting at corner 1, lay out tape to
corner 4. Anchor end of tape at 1 with 8
to 10 nails in holes punched in tapes. At
4, roll out tape 3 to 4 feet beyond corner
and pull tape tight and anchor with nails.
9.After the corners are anchored, place a
nail in tape opposite the line-anchor nail,
making sure the tape is almost against,
but not touching line. Align tape to
mason’s line and nail at about 2' centers.
Then proceed with nailing at 3" centers in
holes provided in tape.
10.Repeat above procedure until all tapes
are in place. Do not omit 6" long center
tape in base line.
11.Snapping the chalk line can also be used
in lieu of steps 6-7-8. A mason’s line
with either blue or white chalk can be
used, holding both ends of the line and
snapping from the center. Do not attempt
to snap any single line longer than 40
feet. In other words, the side lines should
be snapped in two operations. Using the
resulting line as a guide, place the tapes
as in Step 9.
Windscreens are a functional and aesthetic addition to your tennis courts. Customize your
windscreens to enhance your playing environment; they’re terrific for promoting tournaments
and events or proudly displaying your club or team logo!
•Provides a dark backdrop against which players can see and better react to ball movement.
•Serves to break up gusting winds and allow consistent, even air flow.
•Minimizes annoying distractions from nearby swimming pools, parking lots, highways and
players on adjacent courts.
•Gives courts a professional appearance and increase playing pleasure by providing a
consistent background and color.
•With today’s various windscreen materials, the decision regarding which one to use should
be based primarily on cost and aesthetic considerations rather than on wind reduction
because all windscreens work well to break up gusting winds.
•Consider windscreen opacity ratings (density) to determine if a closed-mesh product can
be safely installed without risking fence damage from strong winds.
•9' windscreens are recommended for nearly all courts, and they should include anti-billow
tabs as well as either 6" x 12" windows or half-moon vents placed, at a minimum, every 10'
apart.
•6' windscreens generally do not look as attractive, nor reduce wind as well as 9'
windscreens. They should only be used if the facilities are located near the water with very
strong winds, which would destroy fences with 9' windscreens attached.
•Our best, all-around windscreen is the Wilson Royale screen. Made of vinyl-coated
polyester, Royale screen is an excellent choice and offers a high level of opacity to minimize
visual distractions from public thoroughfares.
HOW-TO FOR WINDSCREENS

•For smaller budgets, the Wilson PVC offers high mildew and sun resistance at an excellent
price, while the polypropylene Wilson Air Master I is an excellent choice for controlling
wind while providing consistent airflow. They both look great on the court and add to your
playing pleasure.

HOW TO MEASURE MAIN FENCES
1.You should begin taking measurements at a terminal (corner) post and continue to the next terminal
post. Do not hold the measuring tape up to the fence. This will create slack, which could cause your
measurements to be inaccurate.
2.Measure the windscreen length from inside tension bar to inside tension bar. You may disregard line
posts unless they are on the court side of the fence. For ease of handling, try to keep an individual
curtain under 60'.
3.Measure the height of the windscreen from the bottom of the top rail to the top of the bottom rail.
Keep in mind that windscreen is generally installed one or more feet from the top and bottom of the
fence.
4.Mark each measurement on a diagram of each court. Send a copy of this diagram to us when you
place your order so that each windscreen will be properly labeled when it is shipped to you. Also be
sure to tag each panel before you remove your windscreen for storage each year.
5.Exact measurements are necessary (including feet and inches). Do not guess or round off
dimensions. No two fences are identical.
HOW TO MEASURE GATES AND TRANSOMS
1.The width of the gate should be
measured from inside tension bar to
inside tension bar. The height of the
gate should be measured from the
bottom of the top rail to the top of
the bottom rail. Keep in mind that
windscreen is generally installed one
or more feet from the bottom of the
fence.
2.The width of the transom should be
measured from inside tension bar to
inside tension bar. The height should
be measured from the bottom of the
top rail to the top of the rail that’s
over the gate opening.

INSTALLING YOUR WINDSCREEN
1.9' windscreens are hung from the top of the chain-link fence. The usual fence height is 10', which
allows for 1 foot of air space at the bottom. 6' windscreens, if used, are placed in the center of the
chain-link fence or 2' from the top.
2.Hang the windscreens so that the seams and hems are toward the fence leaving the smooth side
facing the court.
3.ALL GROMMETS MUST BE USED to secure the windscreens to the fence.
•First fasten one vertical edge at the desired height to the fence using regular (50-lb breaking
strength) Ty-Rap.
•Next fasten the top of the windscreen to the fence, keeping the top straight by following the
chainlink pattern. Use either regular Ty-Rap or, if the windscreen will be rolled to the top during
high winds, Wilson snap hooks or heavy-duty 120-lb breaking strength Ty-Rap*.
•Next fasten the remaining sides of windscreen to the fence with regular Ty-Rap.
•Finally, fasten the bottom with regular Ty-Rap or, if the windscreen will be rolled to the bottom
during high winds, with Wilson snap hooks or heavy-duty 120-lb. breaking strength Ty-Rap.
•In the case of Mastershade, there are no grommets, but Ty-Rap should be placed every 12". For
best results, we recommend the top and bottom edges be folded over about 1" and Ty-Rap put in
the middle of this double section. If you don’t fold edges, make sure Ty-Rap are put in the large
vertical area, about 1" in from the edge.
4.When anti-billowing center tape is used, fasten it after top and bottom are attached using regular,
50-lb breaking strength Ty-Rap through each grommet.
5.When high winds are expected, cut away the regular Ty-Rap that you have used for the sides, center
tape and either the top or the bottom of the windscreen. Then roll the windscreen up or down to
where the Wilson snap hooks or heavy-duty Ty-Rap are attached and tie it up using 14"-long Ty-Rap
to help prevent wind damage.
6.In climates that get freezing temperatures, high winds and snow, we recommend that windscreens
be taken down for the winter months and rehung in the spring. If windscreens are left on the
fences during the winter in these areas, they must be at least rolled up or down and secured. If
windscreens are not rolled or removed, all warranties are null and void. There is also a strong chance
that the winter winds will cause your cyclone fencing to bend.
* We recommend using heavy-duty Ty-Rap or snap hooks to secure either the top or the bottom of
the windscreen so that it can be rolled up or down toward this secured end during high winds. We
also suggest using our 14"-long Ty-Rap when securing the rolled-up windscreen to the fence.

Always start with a written layout of the facility.
•All dimensions must be on the layout.
•Take measurements and view every dimension from courtside, looking at backdrop
and walls.
•All walkways behind the curtains must have a specified width.
•Start taking dimensions from one end wall. This is usually the clubhouse end, but
not always.
•The position of divider curtains between courts must be determined and marked on
the layout.
•With cable systems, older cable must be tightened before any height measurements
are taken.
•Cable height for backdrops must be measured. Cable height for divider curtains must
be measured. Frequently, these are different because of construction details.
•All divider curtains have a natural droop that occurs between fasteners of 1"- 2" as
they hang. This is normal.
•All measurements of height must take into account the fasteners to be used. For
example, snaps will add 1 3/4" and will affect both backdrops and divider curtains.
•All emergency exit doors must be identified and provision made to allow unfettered
access to these doors.

DIVIDER NETTING BASICS
•The standard court needs 120' of 10'- or 12'-high divider curtain, which can be divided into several
sections (e.g., 40' and 80', 60' and 60', etc.). They can be supported by cable and turnbuckle, hightension wire or a track system.
•The bottom of the netting should not be anchored to the surface in any way but should hang 1/4" above
the court surface or just touch the surface. Lead rope can be added as a weight to force the curtain
down toward the floor, thus further preventing balls from going between courts.
•Divider curtains can also be used outdoors, but because they should not be hung on fence posts,
appropriate hanging structures must be provided. Proper installation is important, and the support
structure must be capable of handling the high tension applied to the supporting cable.
•Netting should be hung in two pieces that may be drawn to the ends of the court or to the center for
court maintenance. The top of the netting should be strung 10' to 12' above the surface of the court.
If the bottom of the divider curtain touches the floor, over time, abrasion will wear the bottom, so a
detachable lower skirt may be specified and replaced when worn.
MEASURING FOR DIVIDER CURTAINS
•All divider curtains have a natural curving undulation as they hang and will require adding 4' to the
typical across-court dimensions of 120'.
•All divider curtains should be overlapped by 2' at center court to allow for a convenient passage
between courts.
•Divider curtains must be supported by vertical overhead cables at three or four points to keep them
from sagging over time, or high-tension cabling should be used with one center support cable.
•The point where the divider curtain will meet the backdrop can be designed in a number of ways. It
can meet at 90 degrees and have an adjacent flap doorway. It can meet at a California corner that
provides a corner angle in two adjacent courts. Door flaps to allow for passage are easily designed into
this configuration. However, it is critical to specify every distance in this section. California corners are
usually set at 45 degrees, but exact dimensions are required to e nsure the proper joining of backdrop
and divider curtain.

•Perimeter curtains should be a minimum of 10' high, but we recommend 12' as the optimal height and
they may be as high as the wall.
•Maximum recommended length on a 10' or 12' high piece is 60' (for handling).
•Top and side hems typically have brass grommets spaced 15” apart for hanging on cable with snaps.

recommended with lighter weight curtains.
There are several choices of hanging heights for backdrop curtains.
•Some facilities prefer to install them so that they hang 1/4"-2 " above the court surface for a neat,
finished look.
•Others want curtains that lie on the surface to provide better ball containment and to reduce
swaying, although this may lead to wear on the curtain bottom and abrasion of the court surface.
•Curtains should not be permitted to lie more than 1” on the court surface.
•Backdrops are also available in either straight corner design or with angled California corners, which
can include tucks to provide easy fastening of divider curtains to backdrops.
MEASURING FOR BACKDROP
•Each inside court is best fitted with a single curtain that is 60' long or shorter. Where it is hung
depends on the location of the court entrances; it does not necessarily have to start at the end of the
divider curtain.
•If entrance to the court is through a split wing at the end of the divider net, then one curtain
extending from the split wing to the next court’s split wing is the best arrangement. Allow 1' of
additional curtain at each wing.
•If a full-height door flap is used and positioned behind the baseline, then curtain sizes will be
determined by where the door flap is located. Allow 1' overlap at the door flap.
•If the plan calls for court entrances to be through the overlaps in the backdrop curtains, these need
to be situated away from the main frames and again overlapped by 1'. Each backdrop should be
overlapped along the length by 2', except at the end there should be 1' extra material to wrap around.
*NOTE: All vinyl in our divider curtains, replacement skirts, backdrops and padding has been
registered with the California State Fire Marshal as a flame-retardant product, as identified in Section
13115, California Health and Safety Code, under Registration #F-222.00.

PADDING
A pad should protect every hard surface located behind the backdrop curtain that could
cause injury by bodily collision.
• There are two basic types of pads: glue-on and lace-on.
• Glue-on Pads are vinyl-covered foam with an open back.
•Lace-on Pads are fully enclosed by vinyl and secured by
grommets on top and sides.
• Each pad must be identified on the layout by the type of pad that is appropriate.
•To design pads for use on poles and posts, the circumference of that pole or post must be
measured. On all pads, be sure the style you select can be properly installed.
