Although, as I write, there is a chill wind, the delicate flowers in the
hedgerows, the fresh leaves on the trees, the nesting birds and the
frolicking lambs in the fields combine to make the miraculous
transformation that is Spring, the hope and expectation of which sustains
us during the dark Winter months. As Shelley wrote, “O Wind, If Winter
comes, can Spring be far behind?” (from Ode to the West Wind).
It’s over 70 years since Christian Aid was first set up and the need to
support those living in poverty is more urgent than ever. We hope you
will feel able to make a contribution, whatever the amount, in the
donation envelope delivered with this magazine and have it ready for
collection during CA Week, from 15th to 21st May (see p10). If you are
a UK tax payer, please also take a few extra seconds to complete the Gift
Aid declaration, as the tax reclaimed from the Government substantially

SUNDAY SERVICES AT ST GILES
8am Holy Communion (Traditional language celebrating Jesus in word and
sacrament. Last Sunday of the month follows the Book of Common Prayer.)
10am Parish Eucharist (An hour of worship accompanied by songs with Bible
teaching, prayer, provision for children, Holy Communion and ending with a
social over coffee. Every month the children and youth help shape an all age
celebration.) Children go to their Club in the School from 9.50am, joining parents
later in Church.
Church is open daily from around 8am to 6pm. Every Wednesday 6.30pm
Evening Prayer; Friday 10.00am Eucharist.

ST STEPHEN’S CHURCH, HAMSLAND (ROMAN CATHOLIC)
Masses on first Wednesday of each month, 10am. No Sunday masses until

The Rector’s Letter
Dear Friends
I commend to you the distinction made by spiritual writer Richard
Rohr between the contemplative and the calculating mind.
We who are educated, we who are Western, pragmatic, practical,
problem-solving people - the mind that we think is the important
mind is the calculating mind, which is constantly manoeuvring for
self-interest. It’s constantly manoeuvring for ‘How can I look good,
how can I be in control? How can I win? How can I make more
money? How can I look like a better Christian than you?’ This isn’t
love of God. This is all love of self. That’s the calculating mind.
The contemplative mind is the mind that stops doing that. That stops
using ‘me’ as the reference point. ‘What do I like? What do I
prefer? What do I need and what do I want? That has to fall. It
doesn’t fall easily and it never falls totally. First you’ve got to
recognise that that’s where you operate from. It’s a giant giving-up
of control.
But, when you can accept the moment, the situation, the person in
front of you without judgement, without categorisation... you live in
the world with respect, with a kind of reverence. Not searching for
superiority. Not searching for control, but letting things reveal
themselves to you.
I’m after the contemplative mind - I’ve got some way to go!

The Rector’s Bible Taster
The Archbishops’ call to prayer invites
us to taste what the Bible says about
prayer.
The Psalms are prayers. We can use them as billions have
before us to speak to God to praise (Ps 100, 150), say sorry
(Ps 32, 51), thank (Ps 116, 138), ask (Ps 70, 143) or express
confusion (Ps 22, 88).
Moving on in the Old Testament to Jeremiah 29v13 we have
a reminder that effective prayer is always wholehearted:
‘When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me
with all your heart.’
The Lord Jesus both practises and teaches prayer. Luke
Chapter 11 has assurance of the loving provision of his
Father and ours: ‘Ask, and it will be given you; search, and
you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. ... if
you ... know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask him!’ (Luke 11v9, v13)
In the book of Acts we read how people prayed again and
again for God's help and ‘all of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit’ (Acts 2v4). Prayer for the Holy Spirit is a prayer we’re
encouraged to make daily as Christians, so that God will help
us serve others beyond our human limitations.
Gratitude to God for all he gives undergirds all effective
prayer, St Paul reminds us: ‘Rejoice always, pray without
ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus for you.’ (1 Thessalonians 5v1618). Amen - so be it!

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 15th-21st MAY
The UK has suffered the effects of dire flooding over the last few
years. How would we cope with such potential dangers if our home
was a one-room corrugated shack on an island in the Brahmaputra
River in Bangladesh?
Morsheda is a young mother of four living in Bangladesh. She has no
land, few assets and no savings. Her house can fill up with flood
water putting her and her four children’s lives in grave danger. In a
bad year, huge waves crashing against her house might give her less
than an hour to scramble to safety. One time she made a raft from a
banana tree, which could have tipped and plunged them into the
swirling waters. She put her youngest daughter in a cooking pot and
clung to it as it floated in the current.
A £250 Christian Aid Home Safety Package could flood-proof
Morsheda’s home, raising it eight feet on an earth plinth, so that she
has a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow crops. It could
also buy a goat, seeds and a wormery to help produce compost – all
of which will give her a long-term income and a solid foundation for
a new life.

Hello to everyone. By the time you read this page, the village
Angling Club will have held this year’s AGM and
presentation evening. A big thank you to those who attended.
We hope you enjoyed your evening. Well done to all who collected
winners’ cups and trophies.
The committee thank all who renewed their memberships on the night:
Seniors £45.00, OAP & Early Retired £30.00, Juniors £20.00. The subs
collected will be useful for paying pre-season bills. Anyone wishing to
become a new member of our village Angling Club can easily do so by

We are well into our closed season now. The weather is continuing to be a
problem as regards carrying out groundwork. It is still very wet underfoot,
so would all visitors please keep to the cinder track—that includes pets.
Mother Nature has begun her magic giving us a wonderful Spring show of
colours, with bluebells, primroses, whitebells, cowslips and the ever
present dandelion, plus many others. Please remember: look, maybe
photograph, but leave all flowers alone for everyone to enjoy.
Did you guess last month’s quiz answer? It was the cuckoo. Please keep
your ears listening for that unmistakable call. It’s getting rarer in this area
for some reason. What about this month? Well, you will need to think oldfashioned this time. In Sussex, it sounds as if I can be one of two things.
Firstly, I am planted. I can be used all year round on your dinner plate, but
most of the time I was used on farms as winter fodder. Secondly, I am
something totally different. I was used mainly on a Monday (big clue). My
job was a big squeeze. These days I have been replaced by a big spin with
no big handle to turn me.
I’ll finish with my usual plea. Please take care when you visit the lakes. It
is the countryside, not a playground.
The Horsted Cahagnes Twinning Visit 2016
In 1066 William and his men from Normandy arrived in Sussex to pillage
and destroy. 950 years later, on April 14th 2016, another “horde” from
Normandy arrived in Horsted Keynes, but bringing gifts and friendship.
The Horsted Cahagnes Society was formed in 1971 to acknowledge the
genuine, deep historical links between our two villages. A knight from
Cahagnes was given this area of Sussex by William the Conqueror. He
built a church on the site of our current parish church, and it was a virtual
replica of his church in Cahagnes. The name of our village is derived from
the knight’s village in Normandy, the village of Cahagnes.
Every year we either visit Cahagnes or our friends from Normandy visit
us. This year they came to us and, as usual, cultural visits were arranged –
this time to Firle Place and Lewes Castle and, as usual, there was much
jovial socialising. New friendships were created, and old ones
strengthened. The three-day visit culminated in a roving meal throughout
the village that finished with a party and dancing to live music at The
Green Man.
There were eight children from Cahagnes in their group this year. It would
be great to have more families with children from Horsted Keynes actively
involved in the Twinning exchanges. In the past, children from St Giles
and children from the village school in Cahagnes made exchange visits,
either as part of the official Twinning trips, or in trips organised by the two
schools.
The visits today are informative in a cultural and historical sense, whilst at
the same time are a great deal of fun. Many of us are not fluent in French,
but this doesn’t matter: it is amazing how effective hand signals are! In
May next year we shall be making the trip to Normandy so now is an
excellent time to consider joining the Society.

HORSTED KEYNES PRE-SCHOOL
There’s a real buzz about Pre-school now the summer term has
begun. Several new children have started and numbers are now
looking much healthier than they were at the beginning of the
academic year.
A great development this term is that we’re now offering extended
hours (ie, finishing at 2:30pm rather than at 12:30pm) on Tuesdays
as well as Mondays and Thursdays. The ‘Lunch Club’ sessions give
the children a chance to eat their packed lunches together and take
part in extra activities.
Let’s hope we have plenty of fine weather to look forward to this
term - this is the time for enjoying the outdoor play space at the
Village Hall as much as possible, including the much-loved sandpit!
Some sunshine will also help along the sunflower seeds the children
planted last term with Lizzie and Lorna from the Horsted Keynes
Produce and Craft Show Committee. Many thanks to them for
coming in and enthusing the children about growing the seeds. My
son is absolutely dedicated to watching his sunflower grow (I really
need to get round to planting some back-ups!) and I imagine there is
going to be some healthy competition for the tallest sunflower
competition come the Show.
Please don’t forget to hand in any Active Kids Vouchers you
collect from Sainsbury’s at the Village Shop as soon as you can they are being collected until 3rd May. Thank you!

and will meander our way across the stunning South Downs to the village

We had a record turnout for our meeting in April: 41 members and guests. We
almost ran out of chairs!
The business side of the meeting was swiftly dealt with. I am delighted to report
that our recent Jumble Sale raised about £400! It was due to the hard work of Amy
and Louisa - thank you girls! (And to all the other helpers who turned out on the
day.)
The next committee meeting is the 10th May and the next Branch meeting is 17th
May when we will look forward to hearing ‘Wildlife A&E Tales’, hopefully with
happy endings, from Debbie Johnson.
We had a very factual but entertaining talk by Loz Allan on ‘Flight and the Human
Factor’. The talk started with some highlights from some very serious accidents
and how much was due to human error. We learnt how the aviation industry has
moved on and developed procedures to dramatically reduce these errors. We were
much more assured that flying as a passenger is certainly a very safe form of travel,
even more so today.

GARDENER’S CALENDAR
As I write, we have had a fair few April showers with hail, thunder
and lightning but air temperatures still on the cool side for this time
of year, with a ground frost or two so the grass is not growing away
madly. A few bluebells are beginning to bloom so the woodlands
will probably be at their best at the end of April.
May is often “manic” if you have a vegetable garden in terms
of all the jobs that need to be done. Sow runner and French beans, sweet corn,
courgettes, squashes - all of which can safely be planted out with other frosttender plants (eg, bedding plants) the third week of May. Hanging baskets may be
hung up a week or so earlier being off the ground and often sheltered by buildings.
Plant up tubs, pots and cover fences and trellis with annual climbers like cobea
scandens, ipomea, mina (ipomea) lobata, rhodochiton, eccremocarpus scaber,
asarina antirrhinum and even the humble and edible nasturtium, though watch for
caterpillars (they are the cabbage family).
Plant out brassicas, leeks, lettuce and sow more carrots, beetroot and
spinach. Main crop potatoes should be in the ground by May and the first earlies
should be showing signs of emerging.
In the greenhouse, when tomato and cucumber plants are established,
remove side shoots (unless they are bush varieties). Don't feed until the first truss
has set as too much fertiliser/ nutrients encourages lots of leaf at the expense of
flower and fruit formation. Once set, however, feed well and regularly with a wellbalanced NPK fertiliser (eg, Tomorite or maxicrop/seaweed-based ones).
Lawns can still be treated for weeds in early May but granular treatments
need watering in if there's no rain after 3-4 days to avoid scorch (always read
manufacturers’ instructions!). Asparagus growers will be cutting (and eating)
spears regularly by May but watch for asparagus beetle and pick off swiftly. Keep
a vigilant eye out for other pests and diseases - aphids on roses, sweet peas, broad
beans, lupins etc and treat as organically as possible.
Tie in climbers as they grow (eg, clematis, honeysuckle and sweet peas).
Some biennials flower this month, notably Sweet Williams, honesty and
hollyhocks. You can either save seed from them for sowing June/July time in trays
or let them self-sow and move the plants if in the wrong place. Large leafy
houseplants, like ficus, that look a little dusty may be put outside on a warm rainy
day to have a good wash down…that’s if they are moveable without breaking your
back! Do not leave them outside in bright sunlight as this can easily scorch their
leaves. Pot on any houseplants whose roots are bursting the boundaries of their
pots. Tease out any really tangled roots or cut them off if that is difficult.
Root pruning in summer will do little harm.
Enjoy Sussex in May with all the beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas.

The 1st Horsted Keynes Brownies and Rainbows started the
new term on 13th April planting sunflowers as part of the
village competition for the annual Produce Show to see who
can grow the tallest sunflower.
On Wednesday 4th May, the Rainbows will be having a
promise ceremony when they will all be enrolled. The same
evening, the Brownies will be hoping to gain their Agility
badge when their fitness is tested by Lisa Moore.
The Brownies and Rainbows will be having fun and games
outside during April and May, and their last meeting
before half-term will be on 18th May.
We are looking for adult volunteers who can give occasional
help, say once a month, on Wednesday evenings from
5.30pm to 7.00pm. If you can spare the time, please

On 10th May we have our Annual Parish Council Meeting
at 7pm and our Annual Parish Meeting at 8pm, both at
the Village Hall.
The aim of the Parish Council is to achieve a greater
awareness about the responsibilities and workings of the
Council among residents of the Parish, and see more
people attending Council meetings giving their views on
matters affecting the area.
The Annual Parish Council Meeting will elect a Chairman,
make other annual appointments, decide when the
Council’s ordinary meetings will be held and various
other matters.
The Annual Parish Meeting is not like a normal Council
meeting. The Chairman of the Council reports on
achievements and frustrations of the previous year and
aspirations for the following year. This meeting is open to
all members of the public to have their say on matters
affecting the area. We hope that as many people as
possible will take the opportunity to meet their Parish
Councillors and discuss their concerns on a less formal
basis.
Following on from the article in last month’s P&P,
Councillor Sarah Webster will give an updated
presentation on the plans for the Village Picnic to
celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, and the raising of
money for the play area on the Recreation Ground.
Please come along as we genuinely want your views on
the future of the Parish.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
FAMILY SUPPORT WORK
The Chichester Diocesan Association for Family Support Work (FSW) has
opened a charity shop in Eastbourne.
The WI meeting was held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 13th April at
2.30pm. Our President welcomed the Speaker - Gill Parker, who had come
to talk to us about her time as a Bunny Girl.
A launch event was held in early April, at which HM Lord Lieutenant of
East Sussex, Peter Field, cut the ribbon. The Bishop of Lewes, Richard
Jackson, gave a short blessing for the shop and for FSW’s work in the
town. Eastbourne’s Mayor, Cllr Janet Coles, and the MP Caroline Ansell,
were also in attendance.
She became a Bunny Girl after having a rather boring office job, and after
starting as a waitress to the customers then became a croupier - a position
she obviously enjoyed. She told us that the Bunny Girls were really well
looked after - and the rumours people hear are not at all true!
The shop, at 26 Cornfield Road, will raise funds for FSW, which has been
helping vulnerable children and families in Sussex since 1890.
After Gill had given her talk we had our tea. This time is a good
opportunity to chat and generally get to know people much better. A social
occasion!
Martin Auton-Lloyd, FSW’s Director, said: “Eastbourne is a perfect
location for our new shop as we’ve just employed a Family Support
Worker in the town. Money raised from the shop will help families across
Sussex who are struggling with issues such as unemployment,
bereavement, illness or family break down. Our aim is to improve
children’s lives by building a strong home environment.”
Veronica and Pat were given their birthday posies after the Minutes had
been read.
We then went on to discuss the School May Fair for which we make cakes,
pies and bread - all proceeds going to the school.
The charity is looking for shop volunteers who can give half a day each

We discussed our outings for the year and money was collected for the
May one to Hampton Court.
The planned FSW Easter Walk, cancelled because of Storm Katie, will
now be on Sunday 1st May 2016 setting off at 1.30pm from Gills Lap
North Car Park in the Ashdown Forest. The refreshment stop will be in
Hartfield Village Hall, as originally planned. The last group of walkers
will leave Gill’s Lap North Car Park at 2.15pm.
We arranged our Lunch Club outing and collected names.
In order that FSW can ensure they have an accurate record of walkers for
the new date, please could you let them know either by phone or email (as
above) if you plan to participate in the walk on the revised date of Sunday
1st May.

We have had a busy start to the term. The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 are
studying the Greeks and on the first day of term they went to the Theatre
Royal in Brighton to find out about the Groovy Greeks (based on the
Horrible Histories book series)!
We are looking forward to the Olympics this year and we are planning
activities and sports days linked to the Rio Olympics.

This Italian bestseller is spreading the world as word gets round of a
scientist who can put a century’s achievement into less than 100 readable
pages. I appreciated the simple, clear text despite translation, and some of
his intriguing lines that beg philosophical and theological engagement. ‘It is
part of our nature to love and to be honest. It is part of our nature to long to
know more, and to continue to learn.’
Over the last century the frontiers of science have advanced through relativity theory’s
insight into the cosmos, quantum theory’s insight into the subatomic, and the
acknowledgment that the working of our own thought processes make for a fuzziness
between observer and observed. Rovelli is excited by the way we stand ‘on the edge of
what we know, in contact with the ocean of the Unknown’ and senses breathtaking mystery
and beauty.
The seven lessons he gives are on relativity, quantum mechanics, the architecture of the
universe, elementary particles, quantum gravity, probability and ourselves. They were
initially given in an Italian Sunday newspaper and were so well received that they were
published further afield across the world. It is a mark of great intellect to both grasp deep
truth and be able to communicate it simply and clearly, itself evidence of your firm grasp.
Here, particularly, is a lesson for theologians reminding of the need to distil thinking again
and again into the vernacular, as Lewis used to say. Truth isn’t esoteric.
The wisdom Rovelli distils seems to have been acquired indirectly, even through wasting
time! We’re told the young Albert Einstein ‘spent a year loafing aimlessly’. This is a typical
counter-cultural aspect of this fascinating and lucid treatise. I liked the way it goes head on
at the paradox of space being all curves in relativity theory and granular in quantum
mechanics. Both theories work well independently but can’t both be right. A current scientific
endeavour called ‘quantum gravity’ is an attempt at resolving this schizophrenia.
When the universe gets compressed, according to quantum gravitational theory, there’s a
counter force so what we know as the ‘Big Bang’ might conceivably be a ‘Big Bounce’ with
our world being born from a preceding universe’s contraction with an intermediate phase
where there’s neither space nor time. This is fascinating reading, as is the perception that
the distinction between past and future is inseparable from the inevitable flow of heat from
hot to cold. ‘Time sits at the centre of the tangle of problems raised by the intersection of
gravity, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics. A tangle of problems where we are still
in the dark.’
It’s an achievement of the author to take unschooled readers out of the dark so far as the
main achievements of science in the last century whilst making us more aware of current
frontiers of knowledge awaiting illumination by thought and experiment. Ongoing eagerness
for discovery and honesty in facing challenges to age-old thinking aren’t just the preserve of
the scientist.

How I Found Horsted Keynes
Referring to “Village Mailbox” in April’s P&P, I will try to answer the comment, “How I found
Horsted Keynes in 1945”. In fact, two of us in particular, namely Vernon Edwards and
myself. We were in an RA unit of the Dorset Yeomanry based in Wales and, in early 1945,
we were transferred to Dane Hill. We were “billeted” in the site which is now known as
Cumnor House School. It so transpired that both of us found love, marriage and eventually
lived in Horsted Keynes after the war.
Our “night out” in Dane Hill was a half a pint in The Crocodile and then to the
dances at the village halls (alternate weeks with Horsted Keynes). As a result, Vernon met
Ivy Wood and I met Joyce Williams. There were many “friendships” made at the time, but
we four stayed the course!
Vernon married Ivy in October ‘45 and Joyce and I did our courting by letter for the
next two years. We were posted overseas on Remembrance Day 1945, bound for Greece.
Joyce met my parents, and also they met Joyce’s family in Horsted Keynes while I was
away. Vernon being a bit older than me got his “demob” in 1946; I had to ‘soldier on’ until I
got my demob in October 1947, having then served in Egypt and Palestine.
Joyce and I got engaged “by proxy” (while I was away) and we were married in
August 1948 at St Giles, and made our first home in Horsted Keynes with Joyce’s family in
Jefferies. By now, Ivy and Vernon had settled in Rixons Close and we also later moved to a
flat in Rixons. Vernon got employment in the brick yard (until his death a few years ago)
and, after a time, I gave up commuting to London daily and got a job with Buxted Chicken
Co based in the old Jam Factory.
Ivy produced two girls, Linda and Julie, and Joyce followed with our two girls,
Shirley and Susan. The four girls did their early education under the eyes of Mrs Morse
(headmistress) and her assistant, Miss Sage.
Love and happiness in the village were wonderful for there were many clubs to join
and Vernon and I had membership of The Royal British Legion. I remember two highlights in
the life of the village: in February 1953 I played “Mother Muffet” in the pantomime of the
same name, directed by Mrs Aitkens. Robert Fry would remember the part he played as the
two rear legs of Buttercup the cow, and the late Mike Head was the front legs!
Another great memory for me was winning the football Montgomery Cup in April that
same year by beating Bentswood at Victoria Park in Haywards Heath. The late Hughie
Richards got the winning goal at 2-1. My medal for that night is in the safe hands of my
great-grandson. To my knowledge there are only two of that team alive today: Brian Gasson
and me. The names of many people contributed to make up our lifetime in the village, where
we all had so many happy years together.
I am so pleased that David Luckhurst has the same memories as me. I remember
him as “one of the boys” at 12 Jefferies. In later years, Joyce and I lived at No. 7. Although I
now live in Eastbourne, I love the connections I still have with the village. I am proud to
follow so many giants in the capacity of President of the local branch of The Royal British
Legion.
As we say, “We will remember them”.
