GREETINGS FROM DEBRA GERLICA, MANAGER, VOLUNTEER SERVICES BUTTERFLY GLORY! Thanks to volunteer Terry Frazier, Oakwood Annapolis Hospital Visitors and Patients will be able to enjoy the wonderful sights and sounds of the new Butterfly plants that are being planted this summer season. The idea came to Volunteer Terry after doing some research on the internet. So he presented the idea to administration. Several different types of plants will be placed throughout the Annapolis campus. Each plant is unique and will attract different species of butterflies. This is a great attraction and will comfort visitors and patients when they are here at Oakwood Annapolis! Kudos to Terry! Hello to everyone. This is the start of my third month here; so far I am really enjoying walking this journey alongside you. What an experience it has been. You are just amazing. One of the most impressive items I have witnessed in these three months is the excellent Service Excellence you demonstrate to all of our customers. I have seen volunteers going the extra mile in the ERs, Gift Shops, Welcome Centers, Oakwood Commons Craft Ladies, Center for Exceptional Families, Adult Day Care and the Skilled Nursing Facility. Everywhere I go I am able to observe volunteers in action! You are truly remarkable! The Volunteer Services representatives “brag” on “their” Volunteers all the time. I would like to give a special thank you to Dina Johnson, your previous manager for helping me so much during my first 3 months. I would also like to thank Nancy Gorski, Ebony Conner and Anita Huysken, your hospital representatives, for their patience and kindness. Most of all, I would like to thank all of you for your smiles, and guidance that you provide every day, when no one is watching! Many Blessings to you all!!! Deb Volunteer Vibe – 2nd Quarter 2012 Oakwood’s “Spread the Love” Blanket Program The Oakwood “Spread the Love” blanket program will celebrate its 8th year this summer and the need for blankets continues to grow at all four Oakwood acute care sites (Southshore, Dearborn, Heritage and Annapolis). This very special program offers our Oakwood staff, volunteers and family members the opportunity to knit or crochet blankets for our patients who are dying or critically ill or who may just need some extra “TLC.” It is a very special way to show patients and families we care about them! Spread the Love blankets have brought comfort and consolation to some of the most painful moments in our patients lives. To know that there are people you have never met who care enough to make a beautiful blanket for you is powerful. To date, we estimate nearly 2000 blankets have been given, each representing about 20 hours of work. Whether by teaching others to knit or crochet or by making blankets in the quiet hours at home, this program could not exist without the generosity of our very special Oakwood volunteers. The Oakwood Common “Crafty Ladies” and the Henry Ford Village Guild have been active in the program since its very beginning and continue to make such beautiful blankets. Each one a treasure. The beauty of Spread the Love is the diversity of the volunteers: senior citizens share their skills with younger nurses; church groups come together to make prayer blankets, staff volunteer after work to make blankets--and even invite their own family members to help--and even children do what they can. Several local Girl Scout troops have made countless blankets, which they proudly donate to the program. A few of those who have contributed have been blanket recipients. One woman received a blanket as she lay in the ICU, critically ill on a ventilator. As soon as she was able to sit up she had her family bring in her knitting “to make blankets for you.” Another woman, whose husband had received a blanket while he was a patient began to make blankets “for someone else’s husband.” “Spread the Love” continues to be a powerful way to show our patients how much we care, not just nurse to patient, but person to person. It is the kind of caring we hope to be able to offer every patient who comes to an Oakwood hospital If you would like to learn more about the program or volunteer, please contact Bev Beltramo, Director of Spiritual Support at 313.982.5698. Crochet, knit, quilted or fleece blankets are all warmly welcomed. If you are not able to make blankets, but would like to donate supplies of yarn or fleece those are also greatly appreciated as many of our blanket makers are on fixed incomes. Char volunteers in the Main Lobby/Admitting area 3 days a week. She has been observed several times going above and beyond to provide great customer service to the patients and visitors. She takes the time to listen to the patients/visitors concerns and comments and does her best to provide them with the proper information and point them in the right directions. Several OAH employees and valet staff have commented on what a pleasure Char is to work with. She even goes out of her way and purchases stuffed animals for children. Char is a great asset to the Volunteer Department as well as to Oakwood Annapolis Hospital. LORETTA RICH OAKWOOD ANNAPOLIS VOLUNTEER AWARDED LEVEL II BRAVO-TAKE A BOW From Suzy Roberts, OAH Employee: I would like to commend an Annapolis volunteer by the name of Loretta Rich. Last week she was volunteering at the outpatient surgery front desk. We had a patient come up to our pretesting window that had had surgery a couple of days prior and wanted to see a surgeon regarding a catheter problem. I called the surgeons office and they gave instructions for the patient to come to their office to be seen. When I gave the instructions to the patient, he stated that he had no transportation to get there. He had walked to the hospital, in the pouring rain, and had no money for cab fare or a family member or friend to call. I was trying to assist the patient with a cab voucher when our volunteer came up and said she had overheard the conversation and would be happy to drive the patient to his appointment herself! This is definitely following our CREDO standards. I feel Loretta should be recognized for this. Thank you. Suzy Roberts. Volunteer Vibe – 2nd quarter 2012 We are pleased to announce Gayle Scodellaro has joined the Volunteer Services Department as the Volunteer Representative at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center. Ebony Conner, who has been the Volunteer Representative at OSMC, will now be the fulltime Volunteer Representative at Oakwood Heritage Hospital, along with her duties as the Training and Development Representative for Oakwood. Gayle comes to us with a wealth of volunteer leadership experience. Many of you will recognize her as the previous Manager of the Oakwood Gift Shops. We are excited to have Gayle as part of our team and we look forward to working with her. Please stop by and welcome Gayle when you are at Southshore! Gayle will be part-time but will schedule her hours around the volunteers needs. WELCOME GAYLE!! Deb Gerlica, Oakwood’s new Volunteer Manager, was introduced to the Volunteer Council at the June 20 meeting. She provided a summary on her first 3 months with the Oakwood Organization, in addition to highlights of the various sites activities. th Results of the volunteer survey were shared and another meeting is scheduled in one month to further analyze the survey data from the last three years with plans to determine key goals for the upcoming year and how to best assure that all volunteer voices are heard. The Volunteer Council members and I would like to wish you a very safe and active summer.
