Have fun with your family
The ties that bind…
When the weather grows cooler and the
pace of life seems to slow down, resist the
temptation to flop down in front of the
television and channel hop. Why not get
off the couch, round up the kids and find
new and fun ways to enrich your family life?
This autumn we help you strengthen your
family bonds by showing you some great
ways to reconnect with loved ones, care for
your elders and the world around you, make
fantastic food, stay healthy together and
make new memories. The kids will love you
for it and you’ll feel like the superhero that
you are!
feature
celebrate
your family
With a number of public holidays coming up, we help you find fresh ways to
enjoy time with your family and to cherish the people who matter the most.
Mother’s love
She was the centre of your life growing up
and the person who brought you into this
world so it’s fitting that you find new ways
to make her feel special with each Mother’s
Day. They say the best gifts are those that
you make yourself and no one appreciates
what your hands have made more than your
mother. Was she not the first to lavish you
with praise when you brought home your
first lopsided clay whatchamacallit, declared it
a work of art and installed it in a prominent
place in the home for all to see? Well now
that you’re a grown up you can show her that
you’ve learnt a thing or two about symmetry
and bake her a beautiful cake, lovingly
decorated. You can whisk her away for the
weekend where you will wait on her hand and
foot, then present her with a photobook that
reminds her just how special she is to you.
Health is wealth
The family that plays together stays together.
It is a fact that parents who model healthy
lifestyles for their children will ultimately
raise children who value healthy eating and
exercise. Moreover, it will help to build a
stronger family unit. Now is the time to
start stocking up on flu prevention vitamins
and supplements. Young children and the
elderly are especially prone to flu as the
seasons change so you might want to consider
getting the flu jab. You’re the chief caretaker
so you must make sure you’re in good shape
or you won’t be able to care for anyone else.
Enquire about the host of health services your
pharmacy might offer. If you haven’t done
so already, now is a good time to check your
cholesterol and your blood sugar. Both are
easily done with a simple prick of the finger
and can be scheduled on your next visit to the
pharmacy to stock up on those vitamins.
Live a little
So while it’s absolutely vital that you take
good care of yourself and your family, it’s
equally important to let your hair down just
a little from time to time. This is also the
season where you’re given licence to indulge
in chocolate! While some will celebrate
the religious significance of the holiday, it
is a day that all can celebrate as it involves
the enjoyment of one of life’s most simple
pleasures - chocolate. This year, make it fun
for the whole family and plan an egg painting
day on the Saturday followed by a egg
hunting expedition on the Sunday. This way
you get to throw in a little exercise too, in the
race to see who can find the most eggs – so
it’s not all bad. Did we forget to mention that
moms love chocolate too? So make sure you
send some her way on Mother’s Day!
Get out of here
Lock up the house, pile the kids and
grandparents (and furry friend) into the car
and get out of town. We are blessed to live
in a country with so much natural beauty
where an escape from the hustle and bustle
of the city is often no more than an hour’s
drive away. It might be cold and swimming
is perhaps no longer an option but there is
something to be said for witnessing the magic
of the changing of seasons. Misty mornings
and falling leaves set the scene for a relaxing
time spent in the warm cocoon of family.
The nature of it all
If you’re staying put over the season you can
still find ways to incorporate nature into
your child’s play time and refill your tank at
the same time. Take regular long walks in
a nearby forest or park and breathe deeply,
taking in all the sights, sounds and smells. But
if you can’t do that then spend some time in
the garden. It is said that if you want to teach
a child about miracles all you need to do is
grow a garden. So why not plant a vegetable

garden this autumn? Beetroot, broccoli,
carrots and spinach are just a few varieties
perfect for planting now and harvesting in
winter and spring. Gardening is great exercise
for you and the perfect excuse for little ones
to get dirty with abandon. And of course
that great sense of fulfilment you get, when
what started as a seed eventually provides a
nutritious meal for your family, is priceless!
The spice of life
There is no better time than now to add
a little spice to your life, figuratively and
literally! Spices and herbs are naturally full
of antioxidants and a number of these also
have excellent immune-boosting properties.
Make sure these seven herbs and spices are
on your shopping list the next time you’re at
the mall: Fresh red chillies, turmeric, ginger,
thyme, oregano, rosemary and cinnamon.
Cinnamon is rich in polyphenols which is
known to manage blood sugar levels and
could help with weight loss. The three herbs
are thought to assist the body in managing
inflammation, while turmeric and ginger
are said to guard against all manner of ills
including nausea and pain management.
Incorporate combinations of these healing
spices into your cooking and your family will
thank you for it!
Colour therapy
Warm up the home with seasonal colours.
Think rich, russet browns and butternut
orange interspersed with iridescent strands
of gold and marshmallow soft creams.
Lend a hand
Extend a little charity from your home to
those who are less fortunate. Involving your
child and the entire family in charitable
endeavours can be fun and rewarding. It
fosters gratitude and teaches children some
of the most valuable lessons in life: to care
for others, to value their family and to be
grateful for the privileges they enjoy. Get
a jump on winter and start your blanket or
tinned food collection in autumn or find
out what charitable campaigns the mall has
organised and get involved.
Capture it
Making new memories is thought to delay
the onslaught of degenerative brain diseases
like alzheimers or dementia in later life.
Capturing those memories on film or
camera is that tangible link to the past that
reinforces our self-worth and gives us a
sense of belonging. It will also be a source
of great comfort to us in our latter years.
Take a camera along everywhere and capture
the moment. And don’t be afraid to let the
kids handle the camera. You’ll be surprised
at the unique perspective their height and
innocence brings to an image. But if they’re
too little try giving them disposable cameras
instead.
Get creative and find new ways of doing
more with your family and start making
wonderful memories together!
BEAUTY
Easter Craft
The foundation of beauty
The long-awaited Easter weekend is here! Indulge
the family with a batch of these cute cupcakes.
Celebrate with
chocolate
The Easter holiday is the first real break most
people get to enjoy after the summer holidays.
At this time most will be criss-crossing the
country in all directions, on short or extended
trips, for a much needed respite from the rush
of the first part of the year. But whether you’re
staying put this Easter or if you’re heading off to
some cosy destination we think you’ll want to
try this scrumptious recipe. If you’re having the
in-laws over for Easter lunch these will make a
fitting tea-time snack or if you’re looking for
something to keep the kids occupied, involve
them in the decoration of the cupcakes.
Easter is an ancient celebration steeped in
medieval history and more recently Christian
belief. It is at its heart the celebration of the
triumph of life over death and the humble egg
has always been its key symbol. In ancient times
people would exchange real eggs as a gift that
wished the recipient health and prosperity.
Thankfully today, while we swop eggs of the
chocolate kind, the sentiment has remained
unchanged. So wish your loved ones well over
the Easter celebration with this delightfully
creative and chocolatey recipe.
Bird’s Nest Cupcakes
Makes 12
Vanilla cupcakes
100g butter, softened
100g castor sugar
2 extra large eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence or seeds from a
vanilla pod
12 THE AUTUMN ISSUE
100g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp milk
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
Line a 12-cup muffin baking tray with cupcake
holders in a colour or pattern of your choice.
Cream the butter and sugar together until pale.
Beat in the eggs one at a time. Stir in the
vanilla essence.
Fold in the baking powder and flour by hand,
adding a little milk, if necessary, to get the
mixture the right consistency.
Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown
and a skewer inserted into the cakes comes out
clean. Set aside on a wire rack to cool while
you prepare the buttercream icing.
Note: If you want to colour the cupcakes, just
add a dash of food colouring of your choice to
the mixture before you add in the flour.
essence, beating until well blended. Refrigerate
for a couple of hours to firm up a bit.
To make the bird’s nests, use a piping bag and a
tip with a small hole. A #3 tip is fine. Fill the
pastry bag with the buttercream icing. Create a
‘nest’ across the entire top of the cupcake by
making circular icing ‘strings’. Place an egg in
the centre and serve.

Let’s Glow
From splashes of electric hues to sheer
luminous skin, our beauty editor has laid
down the foundation for this season’s
beauty routine. Opt for a foundation that
gives a matte finish but first prepare your
skin with a radiance-optimising primer.
Use metallic eye shadows sparingly in the
day but at night apply these shimmering
shades all over the lid. Be bold and wear
your brows full - nothing enhances your
natural beauty more. Keep cheeks simple
by choosing a peachy-toned blush. And
finish with an intense berry or deep red lip
for a pout that will get you noticed!

Insurgent
Insurgent, directed by
Robert Schwentke
(Flightplan, The Time
Traveller’s Wife), is the
sequel to last year’s
post-apocalyptic action
film Divergent. In
Insurgent Tris (Shailene
Woodley), a divergent, is being hunted by the
ruling Erudite elite. She holds the key to the
secret her parents died to protect - a secret
Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the Erudite
faction, will do anything to stop her from
revealing. In a race to save the lives of those she
loves and unlock the secrets to her past (all the
while wrestling with demons of grief and guilt),
Tris must overcome death-defying obstacles.
This is relentless, high-octane entertainment!
16 THE AUTUMN ISSUE
Avengers:
Age of
Ultron
The Avengers are back!
This time, they’re not
battling frightening
beasts from the outer
universe, but rather a
monster they’ve created
themselves: Ultron, an artificially intelligent
being hell-bent on destroying the human race.
The colours are richer in this film, with more
attention being paid to the overarching plot in
the Marvel Universe - although the trailer hints
at a possible exploration into the Black Widow’s
backstory (finally). Elizabeth Olsen’s appearance
as the Scarlet Witch, is a noteworthy addition.
Fans of the comics will not want to miss the
latest visual exploration into the Marvel Universe.
Furious 7
After the events of Fast
& Furious 6, Dominic
Toretto (Vin Diesel) and
the gang are welcomed
back in the United States
as free men. There’s just
one problem: Ian Shaw
( Jason Statham) is after
Dominic to seek revenge for the death of his
brother. This will be the last film in which fans
will see Paul Walker in action, following his
tragic death in a motor vehicle accident two years
ago. Walker died while the film was still in
production, sparking fears that the film would
not make it onto screens. Legions of fans of the
speed-hungry franchise will no doubt be queuing
for more logic-defying stunts including cars
parachuting out of planes.
Madonna – Rebel Heart
Madonna’s thirteenth album seeks to reinforce
the 80s pop queen’s rebel status. Since her 2008
album Hard Candy, Madonna has increasingly
ventured onto the electronic circuit – and Rebel
Heart is no different. Preceding this album, are
six tracks released on iTunes, and one of the
guest artists on the album is not your typical
artist, but heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.
Madonna aims to take over the club scene this
year, with Nicki Minaj dropping a verse on the
hit single, B*tch I’m Madonna. Owing to the
strong influence of the album’s co-producers,
Diplo and Kanye West, the sound is a bold,
boisterous mash-up of trap-hop, trap-house and
electro.
Kahn – Salt
The Parlotones’ Kahn Morbee stays true to the
band’s romantic feel with his first solo album
- Salt. Armed with just a guitar and his silky
voice, this first offering is stripped down, and
quintessentially Kahn. The album release was
accompanied by a string of performances at
Barnyard Theatres all around South Africa,
giving the album a deeply personal mood, which
fans of the artist have undoubtedly loved. You’ll
love Salt if you’re a die-hard fan of Kahn’s playful
character, unique vocals and talent for
storytelling. Definitely worth the listen, this
album is a cool addition to your South African
music collection.
Shortstraw –
Youthless
Shortstraw have been making serious waves in
the indie music scene in South Africa. Having
appeared at Rocking the Daisies, Up The Creek
and other locations around South Africa,
Youthless is their third and arguably most mature
album to date. Their music has progressed from
whimsical to a musical collage of rock subgenres.
From new punk to indie folk – lead singer
Alastair Thomas does a good impression of Justin
Vernon’s (Bon Iver) haunting falsetto in Good
Winter. Be sure to listen to High School, a playful
nod to The White Stripes, which perfectly
captures the angst of the teenage years.
Lupe Fiasco – Tetsuo
& Youth
The release of Tetsuo & Youth comes after a
series of rejected singles and disputes with his
record label. Now released with Atlantic Records,
Tetsuo & Youth is Lupe Fiasco as you know and
love him - razor sharp and complex. Split into
three acts, the album reads like a musical
audiobook. Each song feels like a different
narrative, connected seamlessly with instrumental
interludes, each introducing a different season
and mood. The instrumentals between each
‘season’ serve as a smooth wave on which Fiasco
glides and flows for an hour and a half. Testuo &
Youth confirms Fiasco’s place in the upper
echelons of rap society.
Bloodborne
From the director of
Dark Souls and
Demon’s Souls,
Hidetaka Miyazaki,
comes a PS4 exclusive,
Bloodborne. Set in a
gothic quasi-Victorian
city of Yharnam, players must navigate the rich,
detailed realm and battle fantastical monsters to
win the game. Players must assume more
aggressive, swifter tactics if they’re going to
survive the unforgiving terror-show that is
Yharnam. The game was released with a limited
edition Bloodborne PS4 console.
Saints Row: Gat
out of Hell
Gat out of Hell is
Volition’s standalone
DLC to supplement
the Saints Row
franchise, finally
making the game
available for nextgeneration consoles - Xbox One and PS4. Set in
Hell (literally), players are able to combat the
devil and fly around the fiery hellscape that
constitutes the game’s world, in order to rescue
the reclusive Johnny Gat’s best friend. The game
is as comical as ever. Only disappointment is the
one musical number.
The Witcher 3: Wild
Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild
Hunt picks up from
where its predecessor
left off: those seeking
Geralt have left, and
now he must put an
end to the tyrannical
army known as the Wild Hunt. One of the best
aspects of the game, aside from its beautiful
scenery is the player’s ability to wander in it and
interact with the incredible detail of the design.
This makes for an immersive gaming experience.
Look out for a new character “Ciri”, a
descendent of the Elves, with life-renewing
powers.

A guide to choosing the right laptop
The rise of the machine
The first laptops were bulky, uncomfortable
contraptions that could burn a hole in your lap
if used for longer than a few hours, fizzled out
before you could get through more than a few
pages and could not store very much in the way
of data. Thankfully today they’re faster, slimmer,
prettier and more affordable than ever before.
Here’s a glimpse into the recent history of a
machine that will dominate the way we work in
the future and a quick guide to help you find the
right one for you.
A 5 megabyte IBM hard drive
weighed over 1000kg back in 1956.
That would store one image in today’s
memory size terms.
Source: Business Insider
In the beginning, laptops were big, legbreaking slabs of metal and plastic. They
had the same parts as desktop PCs, but were
manufactured differently, with different
challenges. Everything had to be smaller,
lighter, and use less electricity so that they
couldn’t overheat. But this is also what made
them expensive and difficult to develop.
There is much debate about who created the
first true laptop, but in our humble opinion
it was Alan Kay, in the early 1970s, who
created the vision for a wireless, portable
computer the size of a notebook (he called it
the Dynabook). In 1979, William Moggridge
created the first functioning portable PC - the
Grid Compass Computer 1109. It had 340
kilobytes of memory and a folding graphic
display screen - meaning that in today’s
terms it couldn’t store even one selfie from
your smartphone. The battery life was less
reliable than Eskom and the graphics couldn’t
even handle Pacman. It was Adam Osborne
who built the first truly portable, properlyworking laptop computer - the Osborne 1.
It came with a five-inch screen, modem port,
two 5 1/4 floppy drives, lots of software, and
a battery pack. Once again, it was no great
shakes compared to desktop PCs, but in 1986
the IBM PC Convertible changed the game.
It was ahead of its time, but it weighed more
than 5kg and couldn’t be called beautiful or
ergonomic by any means. It took the vision
of a little known company called Apple,
whose machines focused on design and
interaction, to set the standard in aesthetics
and desirability.
How to choose the right laptop:
With working life becoming more flexible,
laptops will be more relevant than ever. Now
there are more high-powered choices, from
ultrabooks that weigh less than a kilogram
to weatherproof, armoured toughbooks that
can survive all kinds of abuse. And there
are laptops that blur the lines with tablets,
offering special hinges and touch screens,
and keyboard attachments. But there is no
one-size-fits-all laptop solution, there are
pros and cons to every option. But the good
news is that laptops are faster, lighter and
more powerful now – and thankfully more
affordable too.
May 2005: The first time in history that
laptops outsold desktop PCs. In that month,
laptops accounted for 53 percent of total sales.
Source: WindowsITPro.com
Here’s what you need to think about when
shopping for the right laptop:
1. How much processing power do you really
need? If you are just crunching through mails
and spreadsheets and some social media,
then look for an entry-level price point, but
with a focus on a good build quality. If you’re
editing movies, doing graphic design, or want
a gaming computer, then you’re looking at
more expensive options with serious hardware
and graphic power.
2. What Operating System do you want? It
mostly comes down to Windows 8 or Mac
OS. Windows is easier to customise and is
compatible with most servers, so it’s great for
business. Mac is simpler and good looking,
and appeals to people working in the creative
industries – Mac OS handles big graphic
files better (and is less prone to crashing or
freezing). So, if you’re in the media-related
business, Mac is the way to go. If you’re
mainly working with spreadsheets, stick with
Windows.
3. What features and components do you
need? The non-negotiables: Wi-Fi, USB
ports (USB 3 or Thunderbolt – they’re
currently the fastest), a webcam and a decent
graphics card. Then do you need a DVD
drive, SD slots for a camera or a removable
battery?
4. Does it have enough RAM and a decent
hard drive size? You need as much RAM as
you can get, it’ll keep your laptop running
better and for longer. You’ll be surprised
how quickly hard drive space gets used up by
videos, games, apps and programmes.
5. Do you travel or work outside the office?
Then look at something that’s lighter and
more portable and a machine that promises
durability. Often many of the usual comforts
are sacrificed in order to create an ultraportable computer. Inspect the keyboard and
the track pad – do they feel solid and do they
work well? Is it a backlit keyboard so you
can work in low light? If it’s a touchscreen,
check out how accurate it is too. Check the
battery life - sometimes the manufacturers are
too generous with their claims. Consider the
benefits of a solid state hard drive (SSD) over
the traditional hard drive. Will a combined
laptop and tablet option work for you? They
may not be as powerful as traditional laptops,
but they make up for that with being very
lightweight and portable.
6. Are you using it for entertainment? If you
need it to watch movies, or you’re using it as a
media hub at home – then your screen needs
to be a high-quality, high-resolution and one
that’s a good size. You’ll also need a powerful
graphics card. Check the viewing angles, the
brightness of the screen, and the richness
of the colours. How good are the speakers?
And if you’re going to be storing your movies
you’ll need a big hard drive. All of the above
are doubly important for anyone working in
video and music creation and editing. And
the same goes for gamers – a great screen
and a top-notch graphics card are absolute
necessities.
7. How good is the build quality? Laptop
manufacturers are using more innovative
materials to build lighter and stronger
machines. Look for solid-feeling options made
of magnesium alloy and carbon fibre instead
of plastic, and when it comes to the display
screen, look for industry standards like
Gorilla Glass.

Accessories you
might need:
1. Do you have enough storage space?
Something you may need to consider is
additional storage. Laptops, of course, by
virtue of their size, do not have the storage
capabilities of their desktop-bound cousins so
you might want to consider investing in a data
storage device such as an external hard drive.
You’ll be surprised how quickly your hard
drive fills up with images, work presentations
and client files. There are many good brands
on the market and they come in various
sizes from 500 gigabytes and up. The more
well-stocked stores will be able to supply
you with a data storage device with up to 8
terabytes of data storage space. These brands
to consider include Western Digital, Seagate
and Verbatim.
2. How will you protect your laptop?
Laptop bags are also a necessity and they’ve
come a long way since those cumbersome
sling bags distributed the weight unevenly
and often resulted in many a strained
shoulder, and they definitely did not travel
well. Now you can choose from a stylish
tote or a sleek backpack (don’t worry it’s
not anything like your kid’s backpack) with
various compartments to store your power
cable, headphones and the like. Or, for a
more streamlined look, try a neoprene sleeve,
a convenient alternative that is easy to slip
into any decent sized bag and offers good
protection. But if you prefer something more
traditional, these now come in various styles
and some even come with wheels - great for
your shoulders but not great for tiny airplane
compartments.
WHITEBOOK: The name given to a customised or modified
laptop. These aren’t as common as customised desktop computers, but it
is becoming easier to upgrade and modify laptops.

spice
up
your life
Nothing offers comfort like a steaming bowl of curry. It’s a dish that brings
friends together, that aunties rival over
and it’s a sure way to kick the flu.
Plus, it’s one of the most versatile
dishes around…
W
hen you think of curry, don’t
just think of: mild, medium
or hot. Think of Thai or
North Indian, think of Cape
Malay and your grandfather’s secret recipe.
With so many combinations of flavours, it
may seem daunting to know where to start.
‘Curry’ literally means a dish of meat or
vegetables cooked in an Indian-style sauce
with strong spices. And the spices are key
- they dictate what kind of curry you’ll be
making. Everything else usually goes along
this format: fry chopped onions, ginger and
garlic with spices; make sauce; cook meat;
add vegetables and special family secret
ingredients; cook until done; gather the
family around; eat, preferably the next day.
Curry is ALWAYS better the next day. That’s
because the flavours have a longer time to
marry, creating depth and richness.
While most of us would ordinarily buy readymixed spices or pastes, it’s super impressive to
make your own. And it’s not that complicated
– just get all the individual spices and make a
batch. It also makes for a great gift with the
label: [insert your name]’s secret spice mix.
Basic Garam Masala
2 cups bay leaves
1 cup cumin seeds
1/2 cup green cardamom
2/3 cup black cardamom
2/3 cup black peppercorns
1/3 cup coriander seeds
1/3 cup fennel seeds
1/4 cup cloves
1/4 cup mace
20 cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup ground ginger powder
3 nutmegs, grated
Roast all the ingredients except for the ginger
and nutmeg for 10 minutes.
Once cooled slightly, grind ingredients
and mix together to create your “secret
blend”. This is great for Rogan Josh or any
Malay-style curry too. It’s not hot at all,
but extremely flavourful and works well in
combination with spicier masalas or a few
chillies. Cook’s note: if you can’t find the
mace, you can just leave it out.
22 THE AUTUMN ISSUE
Thai Green Rice Noodle
Curry
This is not your typical Thai-green stir-fry
curry, because it contains potatoes, beans and
chicken and is cooked like an Indian-style
curry but with Thai spices. It’s quite spicy and
the meal is stretched with the addition of rice
noodles.
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 packet Thai green curry paste (use the
whole thing)
1 large tin coconut cream
2 Tbsp fish sauce
1 Tbsp sugar
500g chicken breast meat, sliced
8 to 10 baby potatoes, cut in halves or
quarters
100g green beans, halved
rice noodles
fresh coriander
lime zest
lime juice
Heat oil and fry garlic until golden. Add Thai
paste and cook until fragrant. Add coconut
cream. Mix to combine. Stir in fish sauce and
sugar. Bring to a boil.
In the meantime, boil potatoes in a separate
pot.
Add chicken breasts to coconut mixture and
simmer. When the potatoes are soft, add
beans to the pot and cook together until
beans are cooked. Then transfer beans and
potatoes to chicken curry.
Cook the rice noodles,
then add to curry. Add
fresh coriander, lime
zest and a squeeze of
lime juice and serve.
1 cup yoghurt
1/2 cup mint leaves, chopped
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp salt
Place all ingredients in a blender and
combine. You could also add some cucumber
and chopped onions.
Tricky terminology:
Masala: No, this is not a type of curry, this
literally means a ‘mix of spices’.
Allspice: This does not mean all of your
spices – this is literally a type of spice (aka
Jamaican pepper), with a very unimaginative
name.
Dhania: You may see this on a recipe and
not know what it is. It is coriander. Or
cilantro – if you’re American.
Mace: Not the chemical self-defence spray,
this is also a spice – a sibling of nutmeg.
Dahl: This word refers to pulses – lentils,
dried peas and beans.
With so many variations on the simple curry
dish out there, don’t be afraid to make up a
unique version of your own!
Raita

Butternut, Dahl and
Chickpea Curry (Vegan)
Many people think of lamb or chicken as
soon as curry is mentioned, but this North
Indian-style curry is not only super delicious,
healthy and filling – it’s also great bang for
your buck. If you don’t say anything, people
might not even notice the lack of meat.
2 Tbsp oil
1 large chopped onion
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
1 clove of garlic, minced
24 THE AUTUMN ISSUE
1 heaped tbsp of garam masala
1 tsp chilli flakes
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp ground coriander (dhania)
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tin of tomatoes
1 medium butternut, peeled and cubed
1 cup red lentils
2 to 3 cups of water
1 tin drained and rinsed chickpeas
3 handfuls baby spinach
Juice of 1 lemon
Chopped coriander
Heat the oil. Sauté the onion. Add the ginger,
garlic and other spices, cook, stirring until
very fragrant. Add the tin of tomatoes and
stir to make sure the spices do not stick. Add
the butternut and lentils and enough water to
cover the cubes and cook the vegetables.
Bring to the boil and cook until the lentils are
thick and mushy and the butternut is cooked.
Add more water if needed during the cooking
time.

The long
goodbye
Deborah Herd knows how to make waves
I
come from a family of wavers. I don’t
mean the kind of polite waving the
Queen does to greet her passing
subjects. I mean all-or-nothing waving till
your arm aches.
I remember spending much of my childhood
waving. When someone was leaving my
parents’ house, we would stand in the
driveway waving until that person had driven
from sight. My parents have a long driveway
and a lane that passes in front of their house,
so we could start waving in early December
and still be waving at Christmas.
I like waving. It feels like a lingering hug. It
says that the waver doesn’t want you to leave,
that a good time has been had, that you will
be in their thoughts until you meet again.
Sadly, I married into a family of non-wavers.
When we leave the home of my sister-in-law
they are all back in their house watching the
TV before we’ve even started the engine. To
me, a waveless goodbye is an empty, hollow
one; it belittles the time we just spent together
having fun and laughing.
Naturally, I am making wavers out of my
children and our dog, Sheba, even
understands the principles, even if she can’t
quite manage the actions. Each morning, she
comes and stands by my side and frantically
waves her tail as I wait at the gate waving to
my daughter as my husband backs out of the
drive taking her to school.
Waving can confuse non-wavers.
It doesn’t matter if you are a friend, a relative
or the plumber, I will stand at the gate and
wave until you have driven away. Workmen
look at each other in confusion – “did we
leave something?” – before realising my
flailing arm is just a hearty goodbye. They
usually wave back.
Anthropologists believe waving started first
as a greeting rather than a signal of farewell.
When a lookout saw someone approaching
the village, he would hold up his hand,
indicating the stranger to stop. The stranger
would then say who he was and state his

intention. If the lookout was satisfied, he’d
wave him in. The next time the stranger
arrived, he wouldn’t be a stranger and he’d
get waved in.
Whenever my daughter and her best friend
are in my car, they play a game of sweet and
sour, at least that’s what they call it. I call it the
waving game. It’s not the most technically
complex game.
It goes like this: they both wave at a motorist in
the car behind and see if he or she waves
back. You guessed it: the sour ones don’t wave
back. The sweet ones do. Let me tell you that if
the game was called oranges and lemons,
most people would be lemons.
Being a waver, I couldn’t resist this game, so
the other day I thought I’d join in. A young girl
was looking out of the back of the car in front
of me, so I waved. I would have bet a million
rands that she’d wave back. And I was right.
She did. With a gesture normally reserved for
taxi drivers. That’s what happens when you
come from a family of non-wavers!
