Dear Parents,
Welcome to our final newsletter of the academic year 2014-15. Once again there is a wealth of interesting
achievements and activities to share with you. It very much reinforces my overriding impression
throughout the year, that Sha Tin students are a great credit to both their school and their families. I have
been continually impressed with their work ethic, determination and disposition. It really has been a
pleasure to work with your sons and daughters!
I am particularly pleased in being able to share the following information with you regarding our proposed
development of Block One. We have been developing exciting proposals over the last three years to
transform this area of the school – our proposal was approved by the ESF board at its May meeting. Our
initial plan is that the development will take place from the summer of 2016 and conclude in early 2018.
The scope of the project is significant: two additional floors will be added to the block that currently
houses the undercover area and school assembly hall. The undercover area will be enclosed to provide
additional gymnasium facilities with the additional floors housing a bespoke Year 12 and 13 Senior School
centre, a Learning Support centre and additional classroom facilities. On completion this development
will also free up existing space to further improve classroom facilities and learning spaces. The school
assembly hall will be unaffected by the development but its upgrading and modernisation has been taken
up by the PTSA as a major project and we anticipate that the planning of these improvements will be
finalised in the new academic year.
There is much to do to ensure that we maximise the potential of this significant area of investment. We
will be seeking the input of interested staff and students as we firm up the final details with architects and
planners during the course of next year. I will, of course, keep you updated with developments.
The end of a school year is always a time for reflection and farewells. To all colleagues and students who
are departing Sha Tin for the last time we thank you all for your contribution to our community and wish
you well with your next adventure and challenge. Our best wishes to all of you.

Kahlen Cheung, 7P2 – Figure Skating Competition
"Kahlen! Excellent work!" I kept hearing this from my kind supporters cheering for me after the Free Skate
Programme. This competition was the Advanced Novice Girls of 2015 / 2016 Asian Junior Figure Skating
Challenge (Shenzhen) on April 19 2015.
I'm Kahlen Cheung of 7P2. I participated in two figure skating competitions during that week and it was
the first time I was a part of the Hong Kong Figure Skating and Short Track Speed Skating
Championships. Although I was the youngest skater in the Novice Girls of HK Figure Skating
Championships, I managed to earn a ranking of fifth place, scoring 64.90. This was just 0.07 points behind
fourth place.
Three days later, on April 18 and 19, I went to Shenzhen. I had a wonderful time because I came second
runner-up. My total score of 78.03 points increased by 13.13 points from the first competition. Though
there had only been two days between these high level events, my coaches had analyzed the scores from
the HK Championships with me and we discussed what I could have done better. This helped me
understand what exactly the judges were looking for and I grew in confidence. For these reasons, I
improved a great deal in Shenzhen. I was able to demonstrate my strength and consistency across all the
elements in my programmes. This was a competition at an excellent level, too.
I have been ice skating since before I even turned three, then later I became a member of the Hong Kong
Figure Skating Youth National Team. Ice skating, which I do five times per week, is my life. I like ice
skating so much because it helps me to think and react more quickly. I'm trained to respond immediately
during the three minutes of exciting show time. Skating has also gradually improved my focusing skills. It's
awesome that I have made SO many friends in the rink, as well. We laugh, cry and sweat together. We
support each other no matter happiness or whether there is sadness. One of our mottos is: “ Let's Keep
Calm and Skate On"

Clive Graham 9X1: ESF Sports Star 2015 championship
Congratulations to Clive who was runner up at the ESF Sports Star 2015 championship organised by the
ESL Educational Services Ltd (ESL).
ESL hosted a season long ESF sports star initiative which selected the top four students from each of the
main core sports: basketball, football, netball and swimming. Clive was identified as the top swimmer
within the ESF Sharks swimming programme. He experienced a wide range of sports activities throughout
the year and thoroughly enjoyed his time.

Rugby Sevens Success – B Grade Boys

On Saturday the 16th of May, at 1 o’clock, Sha Tin College Boys B Grade lifted the Hong Kong InterSchool Sevens trophy, narrowly defeating La Salle by 26-21 following a last minute try by Ken Kobayashi.
Earlier in the final, STC had started on the back foot, with two tries down. Far from putting their heads
down, Sha Tin quickly rallied with the first of Clovis Wong's two tries, before drawing level with a try by
Captain Ethan Lam. Clovis then put STC in front before La Salle made it a nail biter with an equalizing try.
Ken Kobayashi’s try settled the match with moments to go, the hooter sounding the end of a great finale
to two days of sevens. Thanks to Mr Service, Mr Barton, Mr George and Mr Worrall for their support
this season.

Jennifer An Yang Yu, 10G2 – Junior Public Speaking Championships
Jennifer An Yang Yu was awarded Second Place for her Interpretive Reading at the 2nd HKSDPSC Junior
Public Speaking Championships that were hosted at the Hong Kong Academy in Sai Kung on May 16,
2015. This was her first time to compete in this type of competition and she impressed many of the judges
with her talent.

LSC Parent Night
On March 17, the Learning Support Department hosted a student and parent evening. After three years
of hard work, three Sha Tin College students, Ruby Kwok, Shekhar Dhingra and Chester Hung (not in
attendance), earned the New Horizons ASDAN award. Ruby and Shekhar not only received their
certificates, but they also used their cooking skills learned in the Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills BTEC
course to cater the event.
Additionally, Fion Ng, Career Development Manager for ESF, shared her role and explained the job
placement opportunities which are available for students in Year 12 and 13. It was a lovely evening and
all three students should be congratulated for their effort.

Mask Making
Have you ever tried mask making? It is fun, relaxing and a very creative way to work with others.
On June 3, our Alternative Curriculum Day, Ms Jessica Loebig and I facilitated this activity with a group
of students who (although they found it pretty messy and even strange, at times!) had a terrific few hours.
The process involved lots of cooperation, trust and clear communication. These factors were a big part
of each student’s ultimate success and sense of satisfaction. Ms Loebig and I were very impressed with
how enthusiastic, original and talented the students demonstrated they are.
In making moulds of their own faces, or crafting one using a plastic frame, every student embraced this
great opportunity to see themselves in an entirely new way. It was tremendous to witness how, partnering
with friends and peers, using the face as inspiration and taking risks, these mask makers

GCSE Art Examinations
Thomas Merton from No Man is an Island once said, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves
at the same time.” This Year has been a journey of trials and tribulations from our Yr 11 Art students
who have explored in depth their concepts and ideas through many different experiments, each seeking
to find their voice through the media explored. This Year’s Art GCSE exam unit, namely, Apart and or
Together, challenged over 55 young artistic minds to create a piece that personified their best work to
date. It was obvious from the preparation and organisation from many that they were ready to show to
the world what they could do. They did not fail.
Each student produced a work that best reflected their skill to date and highlighted the Arts as a supreme
way for each student to express themselves, problem solve, be creative, relieve stress and enjoy
themselves.
Below is just a snapshot of what was produced from our Year 11 Art students during the GCSE Art exam
this Year. It represents the high level and diversity of Art produced here at Sha tin College. A very well
done to each Art student for the work produced throughout the two years. Each students work will be
on exhibit this coming September.
PRS and History Perceptions of Islam Exhibition

Perceptions of Islam Trans-disciplinary Exhibition
This Term Year 7 students were set the task of inquiring into the following question:
How do Muslims and Non-Muslim Perceive Islam?
This is a challenging question for us all in the current global climate and so the unit has become a vital
part of the curriculum at Sha Tin College. It is essential that we develop a more accurate understanding
of the true beliefs of Islam so that we can combat Islamophobia and maintain a tolerant perspective on
alternative belief systems.
On Thursday 18th June 2015 Sha Tin College hosted its annual Year Seven Perceptions of Islam Exhibition.
The Exhibition showcased the most outstanding work from each of the Year 7 classes. At the Exhibition
students were able to explain a variety of different perceptions of Islam and offer possible explanations
for where the perceptions come from; students shared their new understanding of the religious beliefs
of Islam, as well as what made Islamic Civilizations great. Students also reflected upon the media’s
portrayal of Islam. Throughout this unit students also learned about Islamic Mathematicians and learned
about Islamic culture in Language lessons. Students reflected upon how their own perception of Islam has
been affected during this thought provoking unit of work. Teachers and parents were extremely
impressed with the quality of the students work and how mature and thoughtful their responses were on
this challenging unit.
The PTA has kindly donated prizes for two Year 7 groups. The winners will be announced during the final
assembly on Friday. Good Luck!
Year 13 IB Visual Arts Exhibition March 2015

There were 21 students involved in the final IB Visual Arts exhibition this year and each were given their
own space in which to display their work. The results were very impressive and one image from each
student is included here.
My congratulations to all of the Year 13 Art students for putting on such an outstanding exhibition.
Y9 PRS Genocide Memorials win the HK Holocaust &Tolerance Centre Contest

This term in PRS Y9 students were set the task of designing and creating a memorial to remember acts
of Genocide. On the 29th of May STC hosted an Exhibition of their work. There were a broad range of
memorials ranging from shadow dances, sculptures, musical compositions, essays and poems. The PRS
department were extremely impressed with the thoughtfulness and creativity that went into each piece.
The most outstanding memorials were then submitted to the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance
Centre’s contest where there were three categories: 1. Visual Arts. 2. Performing Arts and 3. Writing.
I am delighted to inform you that two Year Nine Sha Tin College Students Wind Yuen and Martha
Chow have won the Performing Arts Category for their memorial for the Armenian Genocide. The
contest received over 75 entries from 14 regional schools and the standards were very high. The students'
entries were praised by the judges for their ingenuity, clarity and thoughtfulness. The prize for the contest
is an iPad.
“We created this as a means of erasing our society’s ignorance towards these events and to ensure that we are
aware of the events that have occurred in the past. This idea originated from our belief in that it is not possible to
accurately portray the emotions and trauma that victims experience through text or speech. (Martha Chow)

“Grease”, next year’s Sha Tin College musical
It has been 13 years since the last time the school staged “Grease” the musical and we are very excited
to be able to reprise one of the most iconic musical shows! We recently held auditions for the main cast
and we will also be working with a chorus of around 60 students who will be singing and dancing to your
favorite tunes from the show including Greased Lightning and Summer Loving. Expect a slice of Americana
in the school hall, which will be configured in an exciting new way as you watch Danny and the T -Birds
and Rizzo and the Pink Ladies negotiate their teenage landscape of 1950’s America.
The performance dates will be the 7th 9th 10th and 11th of December and we expect the tickets to sell
very fast, so please listen out for the release date!
Year 7 Science Fair

Year 7 students worked on a two-week Science investigation of their choice. They used practical skills
learnt throughout the year to work out the various variables in the investigation. Students then had to
write up their investigations and present them. The culmination of their work was a Science Fair where
they had the opportunity to present their work to teachers and to Year 6 students. The Year 7 students
enjoyed the opportunity to do some fun Science.
Spanish Speech Festival

On Friday 19th June, 17 students from Sha Tin College competed against other ESF schools in the Spanish
Speech Festival at Island School. This is the second time this event has been organised for students in the
ESF who have chosen Spanish as a foreign language. It was a great occasion and a fantastic opportunity
for these students to improve their linguistic skills and build their confidence. Competitors had to learn
by heart a poem written by a Spanish or Latin-American author and recite it in front of a large audience.
Students were marked on pronunciation, intonation, clarity, fluency and how well they transmitted the
emotions expressed in their poem to the audience.
Our Sha Tin College students performed very well! A splendid effort from the following students: Ayushi
Balan, Ashlyn Chau, Hayward Chow, Sunkid Thai, Lucas Rothwell, Julia Rudd, Maleah Do Cao, Owen
Chong, Dominic Lau, Anson Yang, Amelia Halili, Chun Ho Choi, Jasmine Yip, Camille Wan, Sophia Chung,
Nicholas Salomon, Shimali De Silva.

Year 9 CAS Week Competition
Since Easter, in ICT classes, Year 9 students have been working to develop their dream CAS week, with
the aim of getting it into the 2016 brochure along with a free place on the actual trip.
Students worked in pairs throughout the term on in-depth research to obtain prices for everything from
flights and accommodation to food and insurance which all had to fit into their maximum of HK$20,000
for an overseas trip. They worked on logistics, health and safety issues along with everything else that
would need to be considered for a successful trip, whilst bringing in at least two aspects of creativity,
action or service. Trips were planned for a wide range of places including, Croatia, Norway, Australia,
Singapore and The Isle of Man. Hong Kong based trips worked on a smaller budget but included tree
planting on reclaimed land, work experience with Cathay and a range of other mainly service based
endeavours.
At the end of the project, students voted for their favourite trip in their class and these moved onto an
assembly attended by all Year 8-10 students. In the assembly, each of the eight groups presented details
of their trip and the audience were asked to vote for the one they would like to see running during the
2016 CAS week. The votes have been collected but are being kept secret until the last day of term
assembly when the winning trip will be announced; good luck to all involved and congratulations on some
great work done.

IB Film: Working with Professionals
In the last few weeks, Year 12 IB Film students have had some great experience working with a
professional film maker to gain experience in both script writing and cinematography. Students worked
with John Curran, an expert in the field, who has worked extensively for the BBC and on a wide range
of feature films as a cinematographer and he is also a freelance documentary maker whose work can be
seen on television networks across the world. When he’s not making films, John lectures at UK and HK
universities and fortunately for our students, he is currently stationed in Hong Kong and was able to run
a “scripting and pitching” workshop, followed by a “practical lighting for cinematography” course a week
later.
In the scripting workshop, students were able to pitch their ideas for their final film which they will make
in Year 13 and which goes towards their examination grade. John’s practical experience in this area was
invaluable to students and by the end of the day they were all in a position to move forward to the
planning and development stages.
A week later, the students were able to call upon John once again to share his experience of practical
lighting to ensure that the cinematography for their final films will be at its best. Using the wide variety
of lighting facilities available for use in the Film department, John guided students through a range of
scenarios they could encounter in their film making, giving invaluable, practical advice throughout the day.
We look forward to seeing the students’ final films in December.
