Your creativity will also help to determine the kinds of decorations you can create and who you will need to help you. Vacation Bible School is coming, and soon, kids will be touring airplane hangars, runways, airport terminals and more as they visit Flight School! You and your volunteers are charged with the job of giving your facility the look and feel of a Flight School for VBS! The Flight School Decorating Concept At Flight School, children will be challenged to aim for higher standards in their relationships with Christ. This will be done by drawing parallels between the Christian walk and the mechanics of flight. Flight School is a civil flight training facility where you’ll find everything from old biplanes to F/A-18 fighter jets, and the decorating possibilities are exciting! Parts of your facility can become aircraft hangars, runways, a tarmac, an airplane maintenance hangar, supplies and parts lockers, an airport terminal, a control tower, and more! Transforming your facility into a Flight School will add to the overall experience of VBS for children, and with the ideas and resources we’ve provided, the job before you should be quite manageable. What’s in This Kit This kit is intended to assist you with the job of decorating your church appropriately for Vacation Bible School. The Flight School VBS CD-ROM or WebLink includes a variety of special artwork and posters which can be used to help you to decorate for your VBS program. This kit includes catalogs of the artwork to be found on the CD-ROM and WebLink, along with a number of suggestions, ideas, and tips for preparing your VBS facility for this exciting aviation theme! Volunteers Needed To assist you with the process of decorating for VBS, you may need to recruit some volunteers. Whether you need additional help with the job of decorating, and how much help you need, depends upon the scale of your VBS and the limitations your facility may place upon decorating. In the next column are volunteers you might want to recruit. • Carpenters... To build any special props you might want for your VBS. • Artists... To paint scenes or signs. • Thrift store or garage sale shoppers... To acquire decorating items. • Craft hobbyists... To assist in producing props and scenes. Recruiting Tips To find people to help you with the decorating for VBS, you may want to keep a few points in mind. For example, you may be able to recruit people who are already involved elsewhere in this VBS program who may not be busy with the preparations. Here are a couple of tips: • Most VBS workers should be Able to Help you before VBS begins Since most of the VBS volunteers’ jobs take place during VBS, many of them will not be busy with VBS in the weeks before it starts. Try recruiting these people, who are already committed to VBS, to help with decorating! • Be Specific! Be specific about what you need your volunteers to help you with. People will be more likely to help you if they know specifically what they will be doing. • Share Ideas Have some ideas about how you will decorate before you begin recruiting. This will help you to give more specific information about what your volunteers will be doing. What to Decorate Perhaps the most important thing to remember as the Decorations Director is that your imagination is the best tool you have. Your job is to make the kids feel like they are at a Flight School, and this means that you should think about all the ways in which you can make this illusion seem real to the kids. Brainstorm ideas for decorating your facility. Think about the possibilities for decorating the church sanctuary, the classrooms, the hallways, the foyer, and even the exterior of the building and the parking lot. Your budget will naturally play a role in determining which of the brainstorm ideas are practical and which ideas are not, but in the early going, don’t throw out any ideas. If an initial idea doesn’t seem practical at first, you might find another application of the idea later. The sky is the limit for what you can imagine. Then, it’s just a matter of what your facility, volunteers and budget will enable you to do! ©2007 TruthQuest® Ministries. PAGE 4 Decorations Kit VBS Chain Link Fence Fabric If you have access to some unused chain link fence, you can use that in your facility to make “parts lockers” such as would be found in an airplane hangar. Imagination is the best and most important tool you have for transforming your facility into a Flight School but there are a number of resources which will be helpful to you as you decorate for VBS. Suggested Decorating Resources Gathering resources for transforming your facility into a Flight School should be quite easy. Below are a few suggestions to help you. Model Airplanes Ask your congregation to donate or allow you to borrow model airplanes with which you can use throughout the building to dress up tables, rooms, etc. Hang some of the airplanes from the ceiling. Fuel and Oil Drums If you have access to empty 50 gallon drum barrels, bring them into a large room or hallway. Label them with signs indicating what is supposedly being stored in them such as “fuel” or “flammable.” Tool Boxes and tools Large toolboxes such as you’d find in an auto repair shop will look right at home at Flight School, and so will most tools. If you choose to display toolboxes, be sure to label them so you can return them to the people you borrowed them from. When displaying tools, be careful not to display woodworking tools such as claw hammers, saws, sandpaper, etc.) Instead, display mechanical tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, sockets, and the like. Be sure to keep safety in mind as you consider the kinds of tools to display. Spare Parts A nice touch to your set would be to display some mechanical parts in your facility. Old auto parts should be easy to acquire, and few people will know the difference between auto parts and aircraft parts. We suggest asking local auto mechanics for broken and discarded parts to display. Additionally, inexpensive items like rubber hoses, fan belts, and spark plugs can be displayed. Metal Shelving If you can acquire or borrow some industrial metal shelving, such as you’d find in a garage, you can use these for decorating by setting spare parts, tools, and other items in the shelves. Pegboard Similarly, if anyone in your church has some unused pegboard (such as what you would hang tools on), you can use this to put on walls and hang tools on for your facility, making parts of your facility look like a mechanical repair shop. WWII Era Posters and Aircraft Posters Hang old WWII era posters on the walls in the hangar. There are also some very good posters of modern aircraft available if you take the time to look. You can look online for possible posters. These are sights we found. This may end up being an expensive option, so choose wisely. http://www.wwii-collectibles.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_ Code=WOC&Category_Code=uspaf http://www.allposters.com/-st/Airplane-Posters_c1093_.htm Travel Posters If you decorate areas of your facility to look like an airport terminal, consider getting some travel posters from local travel agencies. Cardboard Sheets If you can acquire large, flat sheets of cardboard, you can make your own model airplanes to hang from the ceiling of your facility, and many other things can be made of cardboard as well. Included Resources The Flight School VBS kit includes a number of resources that can be helpful to you in decorating for VBS. These resources include: Flight School Decorating Posters The clip art section of Flight School includes a number of large InstaPosters that can be printed on any printer and then assembled into large, inexpensive posters to hang in your facility. InstaPosters are available for all of the Flight School characters and all of the aircraft featured in Flight School. Flight School logos and other items are also available as InstaPosters. Check out the Clip Art library on the Flight School CD-ROM or WebLink for a full selection. Flight School Signs The Flight School clip art library also includes a number of signs you can use for decorating your facility. Some of these signs serve a purpose, marking your restrooms, lost & found, and classroom areas, while other signs are purely for decoration. Using these signs will add a consistent look to your facility, increasing the illusion of being at a Flight School. Aircraft Templates Flight School also includes a few templates you can use for making your own cardboard airplane models. You can use these templates with an opaque projector to create large airplane models. Imagine having a large airplane hanging from your ceiling during VBS! The aircraft model templates are available in the Decorations section of the Flight School CD-ROM or WebLink. ©2007 TruthQuest® Ministries. In fact, airplane hangars are often constructed from corrugated metal. Of course, most people don’t have this kind of material laying around, but you may be able to make your own by accordion-folding sheets of grey butcher paper and hanging them on your walls like paneling. PAGE 5 Decorations Kit VBS 55-Gallon Drum Barrels If you’re able to acquire any empty 55-gallon drum barrels, you can mark them as oil, as fuel, or as “flammable” using the signs from the Flight School clip art library. Or, you can create your own 55-gallon drums from paper or cardboard and mark them in the same way. Now, it’s time to let your imagination soar! There are any number of things you can do to turn your facility into a Flight School, and the more you’re able to do, the more memorable VBS will be for your kids. You should keep in mind the functions of each room in your facility and ensure that your decorating compliments those functions instead of hindering them. A brief summary of the decorating ideas in this kit is found below. Airplane Hangars This is the primary setting for Flight School, and you can have a lot of fun transforming your facility to look like a hangar. This will be a very industrial and utilitarian look. Here are a few basic things you can do to create this illusion: Corrugated Steel Panel Walls By placing corrugated steel panels (which most airplane hangars are constructed from) on the walls, you can create the feel of an airplane hangar. Alternately, you can accordion-fold grey butcher paper to look like corrugated steel. Toolboxes and Pegboard Try to borrow some large toolboxes to display, or create your own toolboxes from cardboard boxes. If possible, display tools in the toolboxes or hanging on pegboard. Mechanical Tools Try to borrow and display some mechanical tools such as wrenches, ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, and the like. Be sure not to display woodworking tools such as saws, claw hammers, sandpaper and the like, since these would not be in an airplane hangar. Auto Parts Try to acquire old or broken auto parts from local mechanics, along with rubber hoses gaskets, and the like. Most folks won’t be able to tell the difference between auto parts and aircraft parts, so you can display these parts on shelves or work tables to make it appear that work is being done on an airplane. Old Tires Every airplane has landing gear, and that means they need tires! You can acquire old tires and display them in your facility with the idea that the tires belong to landing gear. Metal Shelving Set up some metal shelves (such as you’d find in a garage) and display tools, automotive parts, cans of motor oil, WD-40, and other mechanicallyrelated junk. Men in your church may allow you to borrow such things. Chain Link Fence If you’re able to acquire any discarded chain link fence, you can create a parts locker, where aircraft parts might be stored. Or, you can use fence material along walls as if to keep people off of runways. Fuel Pump Create a fuel pump by stacking some boxes, spray painting them red, and attaching a hose to the side to look like the fuel line. If you have an old gauge, you could mount that to the boxes to add to the illusion, or you could draw your own gauge on your “fuel pump.” Wheel Blocks You may be able to acquire (or build) a couple of sets of wheel blocks. These are generally two blocks of wood attached to each other by a rope so that one block can sit in front of an airplane wheel and the other behind it in order to keep the airplane from rolling. Runways Airplanes need a place to takeoff and land, so why not add a few runways to your facility? This can be done quite easily by lining a hallway with white rope lights or Christmas lights, just as a runway is lined with lights for guiding airplanes in. Additionally, you can use masking tape to tape large numbers on the floor of your “runway” so that pilots can identify which runway they’re heading for from the air. Runway Clip Art Use the Runway clip art from the Flight School clip art library as a guide when setting up runways in your facility. Runway Signs You can also place signs on the floor beside your runways to mark the locations of different runways in your “air field.” The clip art library includes signs like those you’d see out an airplane window as you taxi to the runway for takeoff. Airport Terminal With a few simple touches, you can make parts of your facility resemble an airport terminal, with ticket counters, baggage carousels, security checkpoints, and departure gates. Here are a few ideas: CONTROL TOWER If you have a balcony or loft in your church, transform a small section of the balcony or loft into a “Control Tower.” Hang maps, set up old computers on tables, set up headphones around the computers and have old CB radios on the table where kids can pretend to talk to “airplanes” that are getting ready to take off or land. Security Checkpoints Make doorways in your facility look like the security checkpoints that people have to walk through in airports. You could have a uniformed volunteer dress up as a TSA security agent and even have him/her pretend to do a wand inspection of some of the kids as they pass through the doorway. Baggage Carousel & Carts Consider putting black or grey paper on the floor in a circle shape (to resemble a baggage carousel) and place old suitcases on it. Complete ©2007 TruthQuest® Ministries. Costuming Departure Gates You can use the signs in the Flight School clip art library to label some of your doorways as departure gates, or you can mark them with signs that direct kids to departure gates. We suggest browsing the clip art library to spark your imagination. Arrival/Departure Monitors Using cardboard or even old computer screens, you could set up a bank of screens that show arrival and departure times for flights to your “airport.” Aircraft Air fields, airports, and flight schools all have one thing in common; airplanes! Here are some suggestions for adding aircraft to your VBS decorating. Aircraft Posters The Flight School clip art library includes pictures and specification posters of nine different aircraft ranging from classic biplanes to modern fighter jets. These posters provide an inexpensive and easy way to decorate your facility with aircraft. The aircraft spec posters even identify the type of aircraft featured in each poster, along with basic information about each aircraft. Browse the Flight School clip art library to spark your imagination! Plastic MODEL AIRPLANES Consider borrowing or purchasing model airplanes and displaying them in your facility during VBS. At the end of VBS, those same model airplanes could be given away as prizes or awards to kids, provided that they haven’t been borrowed, of course! Cardboard Model Airplanes Using an opaque projector and some large sheets of cardboard, you can create large-scale models of airplanes to hang from your ceiling during VBS. With a little tracing, cutting, and painting, you can add a lot of fun to Flight School by having cardboard airplanes flying overhead! Templates are provided in the Decorations section of the Flight School CD-ROM or WebLink so that you can make your own cardboard aircraft. Propellers Using sheets of cardboard, you can make airplane propellers which you can cut out, paint, and display on your walls. For example, you could make large propellers out of cardboard and cover them with tinfoil. Display them near the “Spare Parts” area. Wild Blue Yonder In one of the rooms being used by the kids, hang blue butcher paper on the walls and ceilings. Then over the blue paper in irregular shapes, cut out and hang pieces of quilt batting to create clouds. Once the clouds Ambient Noise Create ambience with airplane noises. You can download sound effects of planes taking off and landing. You can also have people “paged” over your sound system to give the sound of an airport in your sanctuary, or you can set up portable players that have these noises playing in hallways or even the bathrooms. The Sky’s the Limit! These are just a few ideas for decorating your facility to look like a Flight School, but the most important tool you have is your imagination. See what you can get donated to you to help with decorating; you might be surprised at what people are willing to do. If you have an idea not listed here, go for it! Don’t forget the tools we’ve provided on the Flight School CD-ROM or WebLink, and have fun! Flight School Artwork The artwork from the Flight School CD-ROM or Weblink is available in the following formats: .pdf PDF retains excellent print quality, although it is not as commonly supported by other software applications for importing artwork. To access a PDF version of a clip art file, simply click on “.PDF” below the file name in the CD or WebLink browser. .jpg This format is useful for importing into other software applications such as MS Office or Powerpoint, or even for posting on your church web site. However, it is not the best choice for direct printing of the artwork, since it can produce pixelated results. JPEG versions are available for most of the clip art files. You could also place luggage on carts like you might find at an airport. To add to the fun, your workers can dress in costumes, such as mechanics, old-school aviators’ gear like bomber jackets, scarves and goggles, or modern-day flight suits or jumpsuits with helmets. Other costumes could include airline pilots or flight attendants. With appropriate costuming, your workers can be some of the best decorations you can get!
