Notes from the Senior Division Supervisor…
at 12 Noon!
When I think about Spring I always look forward to
National Volunteer Week in April and our special
celebration that we hold for all of our volunteers who
log in more than 10 hours a year. This year’s Volunteer
Appreciation Party is Friday, April 17th starting at 11:00
a.m. at St. Dan’s Catholic Church. See the front page
for more information. All volunteers will receive your
special invitation in March and you can reserve your
space at that time.
As we move towards our building addition this spring
I want to thank our “Friends of the Independence Senior
Adult Activity Center for all of their hard work on raising
funds to make it possible for us to start construction.
These individuals and our Senior Advisory Members are
listed on page 18. If you see them give them a special
thank you!
We are serving a made-from-scratch lunch prepared by our
senior center staff every Thursday unless indicated on the
schedule. The cost is $7.00 per person. Call the Center
to make a reservation for lunch no later than 5 p.m. on
the Monday preceding the scheduled date. If you do not
reserve your meal we cannot guarantee that one will be
available for you on Thursday. All meals meet the Area
Agency on Aging standards for proper portions of protein,
grains, vegetables and fruit.

If you enjoy children and would like to play games with
Mrs. Divito’s students you can visit on the dates listed
above. If you have not been before you will need to go
to the office at the school and show them your driver
license for a background check. You must have the
background check before your first visit.
The Carriage House in Clintonwood Park is available
for rent on some evenings and on weekends. The
building includes a 20 x 70 foot community room
that can seat 70 people, a full-sized kitchen, and two
handicap accessible bathrooms with baby changing
stations. What a perfect place for that birthday party,
anniversary, or baby or wedding shower!! The cost is
$30 per hour for township residents and $35 per hour
for non-residents. The returnable security deposit is
$100 payable by check only. Call the center at 248625-8231 to inquire on available dates. All reservations
must be made in person and paid for in advance.
n Senior Center Membership
Your membership is valid from the date you sign up until
a year from that date. Couples should sign up at the same
time. Our membership fees are:
$12.00 a person for residents.
$22.00 a couple for residents.
$17.00 a person for non-residents
$32.00 a couple for non-residents.
Residents are persons who pay taxes to Independence
Township even if their mailing address is listed differently.
All new members will receive a bi-monthly newsletter
with their membership along with a one time welcome
package that includes a $5.00 coupon that can be used
towards a class or program. Your membership also entitles
you to discounts on all of our programs and classes. By
participating in a couple of programs your membership will
pay for itself. All of our programs and trips reflect member
and non-member fees.

We provide senior residents the opportunity to participate in transportation, Meals on Wheels, Medicare Counseling,
recreation, social programs and supportive community referrals that promote enrichment, independence, safety and wellness.

with a docent lead tour of the Belle Isle Aquarium, followed
by a tour of the gorgeous Lawrence Fisher Mansion. This
beautiful Mansion built in 1928, designed by C. Howard
Crane, architect of the Fisher Building downtown. The
home has 50 rooms set in a blend of Italian, Moorish and
Spanish styles. Enjoy lunch at Fishbones and take a one
block walk to the Astoria Bakery where you may purchase

judge is implicated as a murder suspect in this
comedy-drama from Warner Bros. Vera Farmiga,

Attention Knitters: We make newborn and chemo caps. The
hospitals we donate to are so grateful for our donations but
we need your help to keep up with the demand. Meet for
coffee, conversation and needlework or stop by and pick up
some patterns for our community projects. Novices and
experienced knitters welcome. The knitters are also making
items for the senior center to sell; all proceeds from the sales
will go into the “Friends of the Independence Township
Senior Adult Activity Center” account. Contact-Sue Shubert.

Bingo every Thursday in the Carriage House. We are
playing a new bingo game called “Nickel Up” every other
Thursday. Bring nickels for this fun bingo game. $1.00
drop-in fee plus $.50 per person for jackpot. Contact-Gerry

are playing Nickle Bingo.

Mondays at 12 Noon in the Activity Center.
Attention bridge players! You can come for drop-in
Duplicate Bridge or drop-in Party Bridge every Monday.
For Party Bridge the fee is $1.00 and for Duplicate Bridge
there is an extra charge of $2.00 for materials for a total of a

Join our new Mahjong group! This game which originated
in China is similar to the Western card game rummy. It is
a game of skill, strategy and calculation and also involves a
certain degree of chance. If you own a game, please bring
it with you. Players should have some previous mahjong
experience. $1.00 per person drop in fee.

Second & Fourth Fridays from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Pinochle Lessons: Interested in the opportunity to learn
Pinochle from scratch or “polishing up” your skills? Pinochle
lessons are available on Fridays. Lesson dates will be planned

on class is every Tuesday at the Sashabaw Middle School.
This is an Academic Service Learning Project for them at no
cost to you.

The Area Agency on Aging 1-B and the Alzheimer’s
Association are offering a FREE educational training
program for family members who are caring for a person
with a dementia related illness. The “Creating Confident
Caregivers” program is not a support group, but an
opportunity to learn new information and strategies that
will make the job of caregiving easier and more rewarding.
Trainings are held for two hours, once a week for six weeks.
On site respite care is available to participants free of charge.

gentle stretching to warm the muscles & joints, and then
move into strengthening and endurance before finally ending

Income Tax Preparation
Assistance Program
Tuesdays, February 3 – April 14, 2015
AARP trained volunteers will prepare your federal and state
returns. You can call to set up an appointment at 9:00,
10:00, 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Carriage
House. Be prepared to bring your financial papers for the
2014 tax year. Please be aware that if you don’t show up
or cancel your appointment for a non-emergency you may
not be able to schedule another one. There is no charge for
this service; however, a donation to the Senior Center is
appreciated.
Please be 15 to 20 minutes early for your appointment for the
paperwork that needs to be filled out!
Please bring the following information
to your tax appointment:
•A copy of last year’s (2013) completed tax return.
•Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents.
•Social Security cards or Social Security statements MUST be shown to complete tax returns. Picture identification must also be shown!!
•A record of the amount of Social Security monies received in 2014 (form SSA-1099).
•A statement of wages/income from employment or other income received in 2014 (from pensions, annuities or IRAs).
•A record of any “General Assistance” received.
•All 1099 forms listing interest and/or dividends earned.
•A record of the amount paid for health insurance other than Medicare, including Form 1095-A (New Affordable Healthcare Act Form)
•Your 2014 Property Tax Statements.
•A record of the amount of rent or mortgage payments paid in 2014.
•A record of the total heating bill for 2014 (Your December or January bill should show your total cost for the year).
•Year end statement from your employer received in December, which shows the amount of total Medical paid for the year.

n Home Delivery Service
(Books to Go)
This program is jointly sponsored by the Clarkston
Independence District Library and the Senior Adult
Activity Center. The program is free and available to all
Independence Township and Clarkston Village residents.
You can fill out an application at the library and the Senior
Center will deliver the books you order right to your door
once a month. Call Lawrence Marble at the library at 248625-2212 to sign up or Barbara or Patty at the Center at
248-625-8231 for more information.
n Minor Home Repair Program
This program is designed to help low income households
to complete repairs of no more than $5,000 to a single unit
residence. There is no cost to you! The repairs can include
replacing furnaces, water heaters, roofs and other minor
repairs. To qualify, you must be a resident of Independence
Township or the City of the Village of Clarkston plus: 62
years of age or older, Disabled Adult 18 or older (disability
documents required) and or low income and the owner of
the home in need of repair. Call Theresa at 248-625-8231

n Homebound Meals
or Meals on Wheels
Hot meals are available seven days a week to older adults
60+ and to people with short or long term disabilities living
in Independence Township and Clarkston. Call Older
Persons Commission (OPC) at 248-608-0264 to sign up or
call Center at 248-625-8231 Ext 11 for more information.
The OPC Senior Center in Rochester provides this service
to Independence Township and Clarkston through a grant
with the Area Agency on Aging 1B, general fund support
from Independence Township and donations.
Please Note: The tax assistants are AARP trained volunteers,
not accountants. Complex returns may be refused. You are
responsible for accuracy and retention of all information and
tax records.

(TEFAP) is designed to assist qualified persons, including
seniors with emergency food items. Call Patty Collins at the

A support group for persons with cancer and survivors to
be held at the Senior Center is in the organizational stage.
If you are interested in more information, please call Patty

about this program. The group meets monthly for either
socialization or educational presentations. Transportation is
provided for residents of the City of the Village of Clarkston,
Independence and Springfield Township.

Oakland County Health Division
The Oakland County Health Division Dental Program serves
the basic dental needs of low-income residents who lack
dental insurance. It is not a dental insurance plan. Program
recipients are provided an evaluation and a course of basic
dental treatment. Registration fee (once qualified) is $15
per family. Visit fee is $15 per appointment. For more

n Medicare Assistance
Appointments with Patty, a Certified Medicare/Medicaid
Counselor, are available to provide information and to assist
in reviewing your coverage options. Call 248/625-8231

n Medical Equipment Loan
The Senior Adult Activity Center has a few medical
equipment items to loan out: walkers, canes, shower seats
and wheelchairs. FREE! A $25.00 deposit is required to
borrow wheel chairs and seated walkers. Please consider
donating medical equipment that you no long need to keep
the loan closet stocked. We also have some Adult Depends
available. Call Patty Collins at 248-625-8231 for availability
of items.
n Discount Dental Program
This program is designed to help uninsured/underinsured
individuals save on dental care expenses. This program is not
insurance. It is a discount program available to all Oakland
County residents for an annual fee of $69. Program
members can receive a savings of 20 – 50% on dental care

part of a Community Impact Day sponsored by Clarkston
Community Church. Preference will be given to low

n Weatherization Assistance n Eyeglasses
Program - OLHSA
The Lion’s Club coordinates the collection and distribution
of used eyeglasses. These items are used for low-income
individuals who cannot afford to purchase eyeglasses. Bring
your donations to the senior center to help others. If you
are in need of assistance to obtain glasses, call Patty at the
senior center.
FREE energy conservation services for eligible low-income
households are available to help reduce energy usage and
lower utility bills. Energy efficiency measures may include
wall or attic insulation and ventilation, air leakage reduction
and floor/ foundation insulation. Contact the OLHSA
Housing & Energy Department at 248-209-2760 to see if
you qualify.
Assistance for other home repairs that do not qualify
under these programs may be obtained by calling
Oakland County’s program at 248-858-5401.
n Focus Hope Food Program
The program provides free monthly food to senior citizens
in need who are 60+ years and reside in Oakland County.

Twp., Springfield Twp. & Village of Clarkston.
•A cost share of $3.00 each way is suggested totaling
$6.00 round trip,
•Medical appointments for Doctor’s Hospital,
McLaren and St. Joe’s in Pontiac are subject to
availability and are $5 one way/$10 round trip
suggested cost share.
•SHOPPING TRIP - Meijer/Great Lakes Crossing
Mall every other Tuesday. Pick up between 9:3010:30 a.m. Pick up from Meijer at 1:30 p.m. $6 per
person.
•All new riders must complete a medical form
before their first ride and will receive a copy of the
Transportation Policy.
Our transportation service is funded through the
Independence Township General Fund, Community
Development Block Grant funds, Municipal Credits
and Specialized Services, riders’ donations, fundraisers
and other donations. Springfield Township and the City
of Clarkston also contribute Municipal Credits to our

Clean out your garages and basements and donate your iron
and metal scraps to the Center. Larger items such as lawn
mowers (gas & oil drained), refrigerators & dehumidifiers
(Freon must be professionally removed). Pots, pans, metal
furniture will also be accepted. Dixon Metal Processing will
be here with their dumpsters to collect. FREE! All metal
will be recycled and the funds will go to the Senior Center
programs and services.
Shredding
Drop off your personal papers that you want shredded and
we will store them until they can be shredded at the Center
on Monday, May 18, 2015 starting at 9:00 a.m. If you
prefer to watch them being shredded you can bring them
in at 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning. The Absolute Shreds
truck will only stay until everything we have is all shredded.
