Summer registration begins Monday, April 20, 2015 for online registration. All other
registration begins Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 9am, unless otherwise noted.

PARKING/SHUTTLE BUSES—Limited parking will be available
at Clintonwood Park. Parking at Clintonwood Park is $5/car until
6pm. After 6pm, cost will be $10/car. Shuttle bus rides,
11am-after the fireworks, $2/rider. Please see website or call

FIREWORKS—A great day has come to an end, now sit back,
relax and enjoy fireworks right here in your community!
Guaranteed a 30 minute show, weather permitting. Rain date is
July 5. Glo items will be available to purchase by an exclusive
vendor. Absolutely no personal fireworks will be permitted in the
Park. Violators will be ticketed.

PARKS & FACILITIES
Historic Brady Lodge
The Brady Lodge was built by George Nexsen Brady
in 1921 and he founded Camp Brady. The Lodge
is currently under repair and renovations towards
an eventual goal of use by the public as a historic
community room. It is in stage 2 of a 4 stage multiyear
plan for restoration. The goal for completion is within
the next few years depending on availability of funding.
ALL Bay Court amenities are handicap accessible,
including the Beach Front; however the Disc Golf
Course and Walking Trail are located on rough terrain.
Handicap parking is available at the indoor room and
playground.
Bay Court Park Rental Facilities:
Independence Township operates
and maintains 227 acres of parkland
between 5 locations which affords many
recreation opportunities. All parks are
free to enter, however there are user
fees for the Spraypark, Deer Lake Beach
and Disc Golf during non-winter months.
PARK HOURS:
n November 1–March 31, park hours are 8am–5pm
unless an activity or rental is scheduled for later.
April 1–October 31, park hours 8am–9pm (or at dark
if earlier than 9pm).
n Deer Lake Beach opens the Saturday of Memorial
Day weekend and closes Labor Day. See Beach

Bay Court Park

Bay Court Park is a wonderful historic landmark
features a community built playground, a walking trail
(1/4 mile), a 9 hole disc golf course, a winter outdoor
ice skating rink (no hockey), 2 picnic shelters, 1 gazebo,
an indoor room with warming kitchen and restroom
facilities. Bay Court is also home to a small picturesque
beach on Greens Lake, SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK,
open Memorial Day–Labor Day. The Beach closes one
hour before the Park. There is no charge to use the
Beach.
Ryan Schmidt Memorial
Disc Golf Course
Admission for the Disc Golf Course may be purchased
on site seven days a week, starting May 1 (weather and
facility permitting) through September 30th. The Course
closes at 8:30pm. Drinks are available via vending
machines outside the Lakeview building.
Admission is:
n $2 per player
n $25 per resident season pass/$60 for non-resident
season pass
n $80 family season pass, available only to residents.
All individuals listed on the pass must reside in the
residence. Proof of residency required.
Admission paid onsite-cash or checks only. Season
passes may be purchased using Visa or MC via the
Main Office, located at 6483 Waldon Center Dr,
Clarkston, MI 48346, M–F 8am–5pm or purchased over
the phone at (248) 625-8223.

Sashabaw Plains is a 14 acre park that is open April
1-October 31. The park features a community built
playground, 2 baseball fields, 2 practice soccer fields,
horseshoes, a 4 square court, a basketball (half)
court and volleyball court. The park also features a
picnic pavilion and bathroom facilities. In the open
space surrounding the playground, there are 3 grills.
All Sashabaw Plains Park amenities are handicap
accessible. Handicap access for vehicles to the ball
fields or pavilion through the locked gate must be made
in advance by calling (248) 625-8223.

Clintonwood Park is our largest park consisting of
120 acres. It backs up to Independence Oaks, an
Oakland County Park. The park features a walking trail
(9/10 of a mile), a multi sports pad, a children’s size
4-square and mini basketball pad, 4 tennis courts, 4
sand volleyball courts, the Renee Przybylski Spraypark
(open Memorial Day-Labor Day), 4 baseball fields, 3
softball fields (2 lighted), 4 soccer fields, 1 playground
and 2 picnic pavilions. All baseball, softball and soccer
fields are for reservation and league play only. There
is also a large open space area with 3 grills. Handicap
parking is available throughout the Park. All restrooms
are handicap accessible and accessible picnic tables
are also located throughout the park. The Spraypark
is handicap accessible. All fields and courts are
accessible; however Field #3 and some soccer fields do
not have paved pathways.

and closes on Labor Day. All users will need to
show ID for a wristband. Bathroom facilities are
limited, so come in your suit & don’t forget a
towel. Please note, on days where user capacity
is at its maximum, users will take turns in 15
minute intervals so everyone gets a chance to
use it. Temperatures must maintain 70 degrees
for the Spraypark to open. Children under 12 must
be supervised by an adult. The Spraypark is open
Monday–Friday, 11–7pm; weekends 10am–7pm,
weather permitting, for all ages. Toddler Time, ages
6 and under, is from 10am–11am, Monday–Friday.
Also, users should be aware that the Clintonwood
Park Day Camp will be using the facility during the
afternoon hours on weekdays.

The Senior Center and Carriage House are located in
Clintonwood Park. The Senior Center offers sports,
trips, classes and activities to adults 50 & over.
Services include: Thursday lunches, ‘Meals On Wheels’
deliveries for homebound seniors, transportation for
residents of Clarkston, Independence and Springfield.
The Senior Center is open Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm
and closed on Holidays. When Clarkston Community
Schools are canceled due to weather, Senior Center
programs are canceled however the Senior Center
is open regular hours. Both the Senior Center and
Carriage House are accessible, have Handicap Parking
and accessible Restroom facilities. The Carriage House
has a warming kitchen available during rentals. For
Senior Center Membership, Senior Center rental or
Carriage House rental information, contact the Senior
Center at (248) 625-8231.

applicant occurs more than fourteen days (14) prior to the event:

new date is available. All transfers must be done in person, unless
payment is made by VISA or Mastercard. Call (248) 625-8223 for
more information and to have a Transfer Form faxed to you. In the
case of a refund, the rental fee minus $20 will be refunded along
with the deposit. See above for details. If the cancellation/transfer
request by the applicant occurs less than fourteen days (14) prior
to the event: The entire rental fee is forfeited and the deposit will
be returned in full, regardless of the reason for the cancellation,

If healthy, happy kids are your mission, Kids Day in
the Park is your event because this day is all about
the kids! Join us for a great day of free family fun!
Over 25 community organizations will be on hand
to deliver outdoor, family-fun. Entertainment and
events include kite building, music, moonwalks,
archery, crafts, and our Kids Only Garage Sale. More
activities are being added week to week, so check

The Broken Time Machine
Join us for a live-action adventure game where your
team collects intel in order to determine WHO is
attempting to sabotage the future and WHAT we
need to fix the broken time machine.
The Game: Intelligence is informing us that a
time machine is going to crash land in Clarkston,
Michigan on Saturday, May 30th. To be prepared,
we are gathering qualified community members to
be ready. Residents will work together in teams of
four to find the missing “out of towners” and help
get them back home to whatever century they came
from. Help solve this extraordinary problem before
the course of history is altered, or even the future.

to make people smile, and perhaps encourage

Rent an individual plot and grow food for

10’x10’ plots are available for rent on
an annual basis for those who want to
garden in an ideal setting. Whatever
is grown in this space belongs to the
share gardener. A Garden Manager
is available to answer questions and is
able to provide guidance if requested.
Gardeners will be required to donate
(10) hours of their time to the Community
Garden in order to remain in good
standing. Mandatory new gardener
orientation will be held May 18, 6–8pm.

Come join us this summer for Stories in
the Garden ! Creative CoOp Preschool
of Clarkston, in conjunction with the
Clarkston Independence District Library,
is hosting a series of wonderful events
that involve storytime, songs, crafts, and
featured themes throughout the summer.
Stories in the Garden at the Clarkston
Community Garden located off Pine
Knob and Stickney Rd. on the Northeast
corner (keep an eye out, the entrance
is not very well marked). These are FREE
events, open to the public. Kids of all
ages are welcome! Please bring your
water bottles and lawn chairs/blankets.
You are welcome to bring a packed
lunch and join us for a picnic afterwards
as well. We are looking forward to sharing
our love for learning with all of you
throughout the summer!
The purpose of the CLARKSTON COMMUNITY
GARDEN is to create a sustainable organic
garden and nursery for meeting the
community needs while engaging community
participation in an outdoor, lifelong activity.
We give visitors a place to escape their
hectic worlds and enjoy a slower pace of
life; working alongside their families to grow
fresh produce. We keep our community
healthy, donating produce to those friends

Deer Lake Beach is a beautiful sandy beach with a wonderful shore line. The beach is located within the
Village of Clarkston City limits, between Holcomb and Dixie Hwy. There are swimming areas for the little
tykes and the big kids too, including an area with a few simple play toys. SORRY, NO PETS ARE ALLOWED
at the beach. Portable toilets are on site, including ADA units. Handicap Parking available. Lifeguards are on
duty during operating hours.
Hours may be extended during extreme heat conditions. Temperatures must maintain 70 degrees for the

The 10 visit pass will be punched once per person
per visit. Season Passes are unlimited visits to the
Beach for the 2015 swim season, limited to persons

12 MUST be accompanied and directly supervised
by an adult over the age of 18. Proof of residency
is required when purchasing the pass. Passes are

Swimming Lessons
Looking for a fun activity this summer that will
get you and your child out of the house? Are you
wanting your child to become a better swimmer? Or
perhaps you just want your child to make some new
friends? Then consider signing up for swim lessons
at Deer Lake Beach!
Ages:
Ages are listed in the 2015 Aquatics Guide and start
at 6 months on up. Each class is a mere suggestion.
Parents should select which class is most
appropriate for their child based on ability and skill
level. Detailed class information can be found online

Swim Lessons at Deer Lake Beach. For all swim
programs, children not completely potty-trained
must wear swim diapers. Disposable swim diapers
are available for purchase at the beach.

5pm, before the start of the session. If spots still exist after the registration deadline, additional registrations will be

REFUNDS: After the registration deadline, absolutely no refunds or credits will be given. For patron-requested
refunds prior to the registration deadline, there will be a $10 service fee. Refunds will be issued in the form of
an Account Credit, check, or your VISA or MC will be credited. No cash refunds will be given. Check refunds will
be issued according to Township Finance Department’s bill-paying schedule, which may take 4–6 weeks. If the
refund is less than $10, a credit will be posted to your account.
TRANSFERS: All patron-requested transfers must be done prior to the registration deadline. In addition to any
difference in fees, a $10 administrative fee will be charged to transfer between any activities. All transfers must
be done in person unless payment is made by VISA or MC. Transfers are only authorized if space is available in the
new activity, and in some cases, may need instructor approval. Call to have a transfer form mailed or faxed, or download
online. There will be no charge for instructor requested transfers.
SIBLINGS: Siblings are welcome to enter the beach at no cost and swim while their sibling is in swim lessons, provided
they are supervised and following all beach rules. If anyone stays after the lesson to use the Beach, all users must pay
per person rate.

Boater Safety
Open to persons of all ages. This DNR Course is designed to teach you how to be
a safe and responsible boater. Covering basic fundamentals: boat maintenance,
personal watercraft & boat operation, legal requirements of boating, personal
preparedness & survival skills. After passing the required test, those 12 years
and older are given Boating Safety Certificate Cards. Persons born after 12/31/78
are required by law to have this card in their possession while operating a
personal watercraft on State of Michigan waterways. Pre-Registration is
required! Participants will want to bring a sack lunch for one day class. (Adults

A Parent AND Child program for all ages! Set in a fun, non-competitive and
informative atmosphere, this program allows parents to learn alongside their
children. Physical techniques will be instructed along with drills and exercises, to
help you have a positive experience with your self defense education. SanchinRyu will teach you how to use your whole body, rather than just certain muscle
groups, so size and stature are not an issue.
Sanchin-Ryu’s “Grace Under Pressure” Women’s Self-Defense!
For ages 14 and older. Learn to act on stressful situations rather than being
controlled by them in a fun, go-at-your-own-pace environment. Our program, titled
“Grace Under Pressure”, is a hands-on study of personal protection at home,
school and at the workplace. We’ve designed street-wise techniques so that size
or strength, age or athletic ability are not factors in defending one’s self.

courses into one, Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project: Secure Child
(child safety). Students will be trained with proven, age-appropriate techniques
that are necessary for kids to protect themselves from attackers. This program
is set in a fun, yet structured, environment which will give your child a positive
outlook on learning a martial art. We focus on healthy attitudes versus perfection!
Participants will achieve great self confidence and leadership through the physical
techniques, mental strategies, drills and exercises they are led through.

Transportation Services
Independence Township provides transportation
services for people, ages 18+, who have physical
or mental disabilities. Riders must be residents
of Clarkston, Independence or Springfield
Townships. For destinations available and other

Buddy Baseball
Registration ends April 1! Late registration is
on-going, pending space is available.
The Buddy Baseball program is a noncompetitive recreational league for boys and
girls, ages 7-14, with special needs. Each
player is paired with a Buddy, age 7-17, to
assist them on the field as needed. The 6
week league is held on Monday evenings at
Clintonwood Park. Cost is $40/res, $50/non res
and $10 for Buddies. Add a $10 additional fee
for registrations received after April 1, pending

Horseback Riding
for Beginners
Have you always wanted to try horseback riding?
This is your chance! This 6 week class will consist
of basic grooming, horse care for beginners, and a
½ hour of riding. You will be required to wear long
pants and hard sole shoes. You should be willing
to let instructor know of any physical limitations
or special accommodations prior to the beginning
of class. Register early to guarantee a fun and
rewarding experience! Space is limited to 5 riders
per session. Deadline to register is the Monday
prior to each session.
Teen Summer Sand

Little Chefs
This league is for teens between the ages of 13 &
17. Get your friends together and join this exciting
volleyball league. All games are played on the
sand courts of Clintonwood Park on Wednesday
afternoons. Players must turn 13 before the first
game and not turn 18 before August 14. League
play will begin the first week in June. Regular
season will be eight weeks. All games are self
officiated and are 6 V. 6. If you do not have a
team, don’t worry we can find one for you! League
requires a minimum of four teams. Registration
begins May 5. Held at Clintonwood Park Sand
Volleyball Courts.

NFL Flag Football returns to
Clintonwood Park this fall!
Independence Township Parks,
Recreation, and Seniors has
partnered with Michigan Youth
Flag Football, the largest youth flag football organization in the state, to bring
this exciting and popular league to our residents. Games are played on
Sunday afternoon’s beginning in September. Practices take place one hour
prior to game time each week to ensure a convenient and fun experience for
all. Participates will receive a NFL reversible jersey, flag belt, eight weeks of
instruction, seven game season, background check and trained coaches, state
of the art website, and an individual participation award. Games are officiated
by MHSAA referees.
This is a 5 vs. 5, non-contact, recreational, co-ed format. Teams are limited to
10 players to maximize playing time. This is an exceptional program for first
time players who want to learn the fundamentals of football. This is also a
wonderful opportunity for players who may want to continue to enhance their
skills before taking the next leap into tackle football.
There are no try-outs! Everyone participates! Children are placed on teams
according to their school and grade to ensure classmates are playing together.

Cedar Point
It’s your chance to sit back and enjoy a screamin’good time with your friends
at Cedar Point. Transportation is charter bus. Parks and Recreation staff will
supervise this trip. To ensure your child’s safety, a buddy system will be used
with group check-ins throughout the day. Price includes transportation and
ticket. Registration begins April 25. Deadline to register is July 31. A separate
payment and registration information is needed and is not included in
week 9 of Discovery Camp.

Counselor-In-Training (C.I.T.) Program
Want to further your leadership skills? Enjoy working with children? Want
to gain first hand experience as a camp counselor? Do you have a week to
volunteer? Then this is for you! C.I.T.’s will assist Camp Counselors during
Summer Camp. C.I.T.’s must commit to at least one week-long session to be
considered for participation, as well as, attend mandatory training sessions.
No compensation is paid; however, C.I.T.’s will be awarded community
service hours. Applications for C.I.T.’s are available at the Parks and Recreation
Department or online at www.itpr.org. Interviews will begin in May. Fee
includes: orientation, uniform and end of the summer party! Location depends
on which program C.I.T. is assigned to.

Volleyball Skills Camp
This is a 5 day program that will teach players basic skills needed to play volleyball.
Each day will be a structured lesson that will build skills day to day. Learning focus
will be passing, serving, setting, hitting and the importance of teamwork (plus
having fun in the sun!). Players will be divided into age appropriate groups and
learn the age appropriate skills. No prior experience necessary! Bring a water bottle
& sunscreen. Deadline to register is 6/18. If spaces still exist after the registration
deadline and registration is accepted, a $10 late fee will apply. Sorry, no refunds after
registration deadline. This program is offered in conjunction with Waterford Twp.

YOUTH GOLF CAMPS
Junior Lifeguard Camp
Back by popular demand, this program teaches strong swimmers the ins and outs of
being a lifeguard. The hands-on course will teach lifesaving techniques, how to be a
stronger swimmer, basic first aid and CPR. After completing the course, participants
will have the option to volunteer at the Beach and assist a Swim Instructor with a
swim lesson. Registration begins Saturday, May 2 at 9am until 1pm and continues
during regular business hours, Monday, May 4. The registration deadline is July 8.

Little Kickers Soccer Camp
This camp will teach the ABC’s of soccer. Skills will include dribbling, ball

Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club is hosting 5-day golf camps for children
ages 7–16 as part of our new player development program. The camps
are half-day and full-day, with the half day classes designed for newer

This camp will teach Quarterbacks fundamentals
for throwing and proper grip, as well as drills to
help develop arm strength, accuracy, footwork and the
mental part of the position. For Wide Receivers this class
will teach proper hand placement, route running and
how to catch a football. For Running backs this class
will teach how to handle the ball, route running, drills
to help with all aspects of the position. For Linebackers
this class will help with proper stance, footwork, how to
cover backs and wide receivers, drills to help develop the
overall position. For Defensive backs this class will help
with footwork, stance how to cover and drills to develop
the overall position. For lineman this class will help with
pass rushing, proper stance, footwork, and blocking
also drills to help develop the overall position. This will
help the player get ready for flag or tackle football. This
class will get your player ready for the upcoming season.
Sportsmanship, teamwork and what a coach is looking
for will be discussed. Each camper will receive a Camp
T-Shirt by the end of the camp.

Springfield Township Resident and has many years

experience Team Reptile Camps before their time. Camp

Team Reptile’s MI Wildlife
Adventures Advanced Camp*
This camp is designed for campers that have participated
in at least four previous years of Team Reptile Camps and
have verbal permission from the Team Reptile Director.
During the advanced camp participants will explore a
variety of areas (some new and some familiar) while
filming for Team Reptile’s “MI Wildlife Adventures”
Public Access Television Program. Campers will also be
involved with the production of a specific episode of the
program based on the Advanced Camp’s adventures.
Campers will assist with the planning, filming, and
editing of the program. Campers will also have many
hands-on experiences during the camp, including:
exploring at local parks for snakes, salamanders, turtles,

Little Farmers Camp
Fame’s the name performing arts excitement is the
game! A week long odyssey into jazz dance, theatre,
music and art. The week culminates with an on-stage
performance for parents that highlights all of their
learning. Students will learn all levels of performing
arts including singing, dancing and acting. Bring a sack
lunch, imaginations, energy and a camera everyday to
camp. You’ll want to keep these star filled memories

SOCCER
Kiddy Kicker Soccer
For 4 and 5 year olds! Do you want your little one
to get their first experience in organized sports?
There is no better way than with our Kiddy Kicker
instructional soccer program, geared to teach the
basic concepts of the game in a FUN atmosphere!
Your child will play with a co-rec team formed by
the Parks & Recreation Department, coached by
parent volunteers. No official standings or score
is kept. Season consists of six games, with no
practices or meetings outside of the schedule.
T-shirt provided, all players are required to wear
shin guards. Size 3 ball suggested. All games held
on Saturday mornings at Clintonwood Park. Age as
of August 22, 2015. Registration begins Thursday,
June4 at 8am for Residents and those in the
Clarkston School District. Birth certificate must be
verified by Parks & Recreation to play. Each player
must complete a soccer registration packet. These
packets are available on our website at www.itpr.

Youth Soccer Leagues
Children can enjoy learning and improving their soccer skills in a recreational atmosphere. Volunteers
coach all teams; therefore practices are subject to their availability. The season tentatively begins
September 14 depending on league. All games are at Clintonwood Park and games are twice a week,
plus an optional Soccer Fun Day & Wrap Up Clinic led by the Michigan Impact Soccer Club. See league

Coaches Wanted
Volunteer coaches are needed to coach soccer games. If you are a parent with a child in the league, why
not volunteer to coach or assistant coach. If you want to volunteer to give back to your community, this
could also be for you! Coaches for our Kiddy Kicker league need minimal knowledge of the game. For our
older leagues, we ask coaches to have previous experience playing or coaching. If interested, call Tim

Preschool Soccer
Have fun and learn the basics of soccer: dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting
and positioning. Each session consists of instruction in each aspect of the
game, participation in fun drills that are designed to teach skills, and a low key,
non-competitive game. All coaching conducted by Great Lakes Golf & Sports
Complex, but parents are encouraged to assist. Children should wear shinguards. Equipment provided, but you may bring your own.
Hoppers
Hoppers classes are designed to be fun and fast paced. Classes focus on
increasing balancing skills, coordination and fundamental soccer skills. We
utilize creative games and help kids develop listening skills, cooperation and
teamwork. Hoppers classes are the first class where children participate
independently. Ratio for Hoppers class is 7:1 (14:2).

Cottontails
Cottontails is a class designed for children who are ready for more of a
challenge than a Thumpers class, but who are not quite ready to be on the
field without a parent or caregiver. The Cottontails curriculum is designed to
build fundamental skills such as balance, coordination, and ball kicking skills.
Cottontails classes also offer another component—helping your child build a
sense of independence. As children progress through the session and become
ready for more independence, parents can choose to transition to a less active
role in the class. Ratio for Cottontails class is 7:1 (14:2).
PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE GOLF
Shepherd’s Hollow is a host facility for PGA Junior League Golf—
a team vs. team competition in structured leagues that provides a popular,
less stressful scramble format as opposed to stroke-play competition.
The course is seeking both participants and coaches.

Tennis Play Day
Learn new skills while building strong healthy
bodies playing tennis. During this time, the “Little
Beginners” will learn the basics of tennis, including
proper techniques and correct form, all in a fun
setting. Proper footwork and hand/eye coordination
skills will also be taught. Classes are limited to 12
youth.
Expand your knowledge of tennis learning new
proper techniques including groundstrokes, net
play, strategy, court etiquette, conditioning, rules
and scoring. Ages will be split accordingly.
For kids 10 and under. This fun event will introduce
your child to the game of tennis in a relaxed
atmosphere. Through non-competitive drills and
activities, your kids will want to play tennis again
and again. Come out for fun, music, games and
discover a new sport your child can be passionate
about for the rest of their lives. Parents stay and

Junior Golf League
Tee off with friends on Tuesday mornings for 9
holes of fun! This league has become a great social
activity, a chance to fine tune your swing and an
opportunity for you to enjoy the great outdoors. You
should have some experience on the golf course (no
beginners please). You must bring your own clubs.
Parents, watch your child jump out of bed to go
golfing! A site supervisor will be present to offer
general ideas and etiquette; however, this is not a
teaching league. Registration begins Saturday, April
25 at 9am. Deadline to register is June 5, if space
still exits. Parents, this fills fast and is limited to

This four week course is for men, women, teens and
seniors who want to learn how to play golf or to

Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu
(Japanese Sword Class)
Train your body, spirit and mind. Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu
is a Koryu Japanese Sword Art, not taught outside
of Japan until recently. We are the only official
group in the U.S. teaching this particular art. The
Clarkston branch is managed by Kenneth Young
(Genchu) Sensei (4th Degree) and guided by the 15th
headmaster in Japan. This class is for adults over
the age of 18 (no exceptions). Since many of our
techniques start from a traditional kneeling position,
students should expect to get into, and up from,
this position several times a class. Association and
equipment fees will be needed for continuous study;

does not incur an expense for your place
or if someone on the waiting list can

Your membership is valid from the date
you sign up until a year from that date.
Couples must sign up at the same time
to receive the membership rate. Our
membership fees are as follows:
n $12 a person for residents.
n $22 a couple for residents.
n $17 a person for non-residents.
n $32 a couple for non-residents.
Residents are persons who pay taxes
to Independence Township even if their
mailing address is listed differently.
All new members will receive a one time
welcome package that includes a $5
coupon that can be used towards a class
or program and bi-monthly newsletters.
Your membership also entitles you to
discounts on all programs and classes.
All of our programs and trips reflect
member and non-member fees.
Independence Township provides
mini-bus service for persons 55+ and
persons over 18 who have physical and/
or mental disabilities and are residents
of Clarkston, Independence Township
or Springfield Township. Service is
Monday–Friday from 8:30am–4pm
Vehicles with wheel chair lifts are
available. Local destinations must
be within Clarkston, Independence
Township or Springfield Township, plus
three nearby hospitals. Cost share is $3
each way and local hospital trips are
$5 each way. Special shopping trips
are offered on a sign up basis. Call 248625-8231 at least two days in advance.
Medical forms must be completed by
new riders before they ride.
Nutrition
Home-made lunches are served at the
Activity Center on Thursdays at 12 noon
for $7 per person. To check the menu
or reserve a meal, call the office at
248-625-8231 by 5pm on the Monday
before the lunch. Thursday lunch menus
are also posted in our newsletter on the
Independence Township Website under
Senior Center. If you enjoy trivia join us
at 11am on Thursdays before lunch.
Meals on Wheels (MOW) are delivered
seven days per week for homebound
residents of Clarkston and Independence
Township. Hot meals are available
seven days a week to older adults 60+
and to people with short or long term
disabilities living in Independence
Township and Clarkston. To sign up
for MOW contact the Older Persons
Commission (OPC) at 248-608-0264 or
the Center at 248-625-8231 for more
information. The OPC Senior Center
in Rochester provides this service to
Independence Township and Clarkston
through a grant with the Area Agency on
Aging 1B.
Our part-time Outreach Coordinator,
Patricia Collins, helps older adults and
their caregivers locate area services and
resources. She can be contacted at (248)

Medicaid Counseling and Assistance,

We have a Medical Equipment Loan

A shrub is a woody plant that branches at the base and is typically less
than 25 feet in height.
Native shrubs, by definition, are plants that existed in the Great Lakes
region prior to the arrival of European settlers. They contribute to the
rich and productive relationships among plants, animals, insects and
microorganisms in natural ecosystems
such as woodlands, prairies,
and wetlands.

Native shrubs contribute
to the natural environment

shrubs are often resistant to pests
and diseases, reducing the need
for pesticides.
• HABITAT FOR BIRDS, INSECTS, AND OTHER BENEFICIAL WILDLIFE:
Native plant communities provide food, shelter, and hiding places for
birds, butterflies, insects, and other beneficial wildlife.
• WATER QUALITY ENHANCEMENT THROUGH SOIL STABILIZATION:
Some native shrubs colonize disturbed habitats, holding soil in place
and protecting soil from excessive drying. Shrubs absorb nutrients
which might otherwise run off into waterways and provide suitable
conditions for other plants— including the next generation of trees.
