he Right Reverend
Monsignor John J. Loughlin,
pastor of St. Francis of Assisi
Parish, initiated the construction
of a new building for the parish
school at 360 Prospect St. in the
early 1960s. Oneglia and Gervasini (O & G), General Contractors, were hired to erect the
building, complete with sixteen
classrooms, a full-sized gymnasium/auditorium, a cafeteria
with a full kitchen, and an office
complex.

Laying the cornerstone of the
building.
chilly winter day, more than 600
students packed up their desks
in the old school buildings,
which had been constructed in
1893 and 1904 behind the
church. They walked up Main
Street with their teachers and
Principal Rev. John Montgomery to the new school.
On March 3, 1963, a ceremony was held to officially
open the St. Francis of Assisi
School building. Surrounded by
the Knights of Columbus, the
bishop consecrated the new
structure, and the cornerstone
was laid on the west side of the
school.
Today, St. Peter / St.
Francis School benefits from the
foresight of
pastoral staffs,
teachers, benefactors, and parishioners who, over the years,
believed in Catholic schools in
the city of Torrington. Just last
year, The Cherubim reported the
latest advances in Catholic education right here in Torrington
in this very building — interactive white boards installed in
every classroom, iPads for each
student in grades six through
eight, new laptop computers for
the teachers. All these advances
and others have been made possible by the generosity of
alumni, former parents, parishioners, priests, and friends who
have understood the everchanging needs of Catholic students in the twenty-first century.
As Thanksgiving approaches, it is a good time for
the St. Peter / St. Francis School
community to reflect upon the
many wonderful gifts that it has
received since the beginnings of
St. Francis of Assisi School
back in 1893 and of St. Peter
School back in 1956. St. Peter/
St. Francis School continues to
be truly blessed in so many

Northern Galapagos

During September, St. Peter/ St.
Francis School had a fundraiser
at Northern Galapagos Restaurant. The fundraiser was for
breakfast. There was a variety of
choices, from caramel–banana
French toast to the classic
scrambled eggs on toast. The
school made $100, and the owners of Northern Galapagos donated another $100. The grand
total was $200. Thank you to
everyone who participated.
ALS Walk
On September 29, 2012, the
Walk to Defeat ALS took
place in Walnut Hill Park in
New Britain, CT. ALS, also
known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disorder.
Kelly McMahon (SP/SF
School Class of 2011) organized “Team Cons” in honor of
Mr. Tim Considine to support
his fight against the disease;
she is currently a sophomore
at St. Paul Catholic High
School in Bristol. Through
her hard work and dedication,
“Team Cons” grew to 71
members by the day of the
event. Family and friends
joined Mrs. Considine and her
sons, Tim and Brian, for the 3
mile walk with everyone clad
in green “Team Cons” t-shirts.
It was so heartwarming for all
to be a part of the largest team
and to walk for a disease that
may someday, with dedication
and hard work such as
Kelly’s, have a cure. Of the
top 20 teams, “Team Cons”
ranked #3 in monies raised for
this event. The grand total
raised to date is $8,534.00.00.
Donations are still being acc e p t e d
t h r o u g h
www.webct.alsa.org.
It is evident that many people
have had their lives touched
by Mr. Considine. Although
he lost his battle with ALS, it
is hoped that his strength and
dedication to his faith, his
family, and his friends will be
an example for all to follow.
Thank you, Kelly McMahon.

On Saturday, October 6, St. Francis of Assisi Parish held its annual
festival in honor of its patron saint. It was a beautiful day, and many
parishioners and friends filled the church grounds to celebrate together two days after the actual feast day of the saint. Father Carlos
had the privilege of blessing the many pets of all shapes and sizes
which were brought to the event.
St. Francis saw the glory of God in all of nature, from the awesome
power of the sun to the tiniest creatures. It was an appropriate way
to honor his life and teachings.

Q: How long have you been
running the scrip program?
A: Five years.
Q: What is scrip?
A: Scrip is a word that means
substitute money: gift cards and
gift certificates. St. Peter/St.
Francis teamed up with a company called Great Lakes Scrip
Center.
Q: What kinds of cards do you
sell?
A: Over 400 different varieties
such as Dunkin Donuts, Target,
JC Penney, etc.
Q: Do you enjoy doing scrip?
A: Yes, very much.
Q: Does scrip have a web site?
A:
Yes,
it
is
www.shopwithscrip.com
Q: Do families find it easy to
order cards?
A: Yes.
Q: Do you need help with
scrip?
A: Yes, please. If you want to
help me with scrip, contact me
at 860-309-9774.
Q: What is your favorite part of
scrip?
A: My favorite part of scrip is
probably watching funds add up
for the school.
Q: What happens when you
need a gift card as soon as possible?
A: Call Mrs. Hanlon. Then,
when you go to school the next
time, (as long as you have your
money) you will get your card.
The purchaser of the gift card
pays the face value and receives
the full amount. The companies, in turn, give the school
various percentages of their
profits because cards are being
sold in bulk. Everybody wins!

TV Review:
Dog with a Blog
By Clare Farrington
This Disney Channel
show is about Stan the dog. His
family includes Chloe, the
youngest; Tyler, the oldest;
Avery, the rule enforcer; Bennett, the dad; and Ellen, the
mom. Stan can talk and use a
computer, but only the children
know this. Chloe is 5 years old
and spunky. Teenager Tyler is
the exact opposite of his stepsister, Avery, who only breaks
the rules once in a while. Bennett is a child psychologist who
writes about how to keep children out of trouble. Nobody in
the family other than Bennett
has read his books. Ellen loves
cats. It is fun to watch; check it
out soon!
Restaurant Review:
Dos Amigos Restaurant
By Maddie Bowles
Dos Amigos is a kidfriendly restaurant on East Main
Street in Torrington.
Their
menu is a moderate one, with
meals ranging from $4.95 to
$20.95. Dos Amigos has very
friendly service, great décor,
and great meals.
They have a kids’
menu, which has Mexican food
and American food for kids under 11. The adults’ menu is
more expensive, with prices
going up to $20.95. Nachos are
always a great way to start the
meal. The menu also includes
quesadillas, minichangas, chiles
rellenos, burritos, chimichangas,
enchiladas, flautas, and much
more extraordinary food. The
dinners/lunches taste like a
cheese fiesta and are great for
your cheese fix.

Movie Review:
Hotel Transylvania
By Abbie Hanlon
Hotel Transylvania is a
Halloween movie starring
Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg,
and Adam Sandler. It is a family-friendly movie, rated PG,
with a running time of 91 minutes.
Dracula is an overprotective single father trying to
keep his vampire daughter away
from humans. He creates Hotel
Transylvania; it is hidden away,
beyond a graveyard and the
woods, which are filled with
creepy creatures. In that location, no human would even dare
to try to find the hotel. During
the 118th birthday party of his
daughter, Mavis, a human
named Jonathan discovers the
hotel. Mavis falls in love with
him, and Dracula makes him
leave her. They are both devastated. Dracula sees this and tries
to fix it. The movie ends happily. It is a great movie. It is
appropriate for ages 8 and up.
In 2011, four individuals, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy
Nelson, Jade Thirwal, and Perrie
Edwards, auditioned for the UK
X Factor, a singing competition
that began in 2004. Though they
did not succeed on the program
as individuals, the four girls
were put together as a band by
the judges. As a group, they
went on to win the entire X Factor competition.
There are many steps in
the X Factor process. It starts
with auditions, then Boot-Camp,
followed by Judges’ Houses.
After Judges’ Houses come the
live shows, followed by the live
finals at Wembley Arena.
~~~~~~~~
The food is very tasty; it is NOT
bland!
Their desserts are
unique, such as flaming ice
cream, and they are definitely
worth the price. Many of them
are large and crispy! Dos Amigos is one of the best restaurants
in Torrington, the best TexMex for miles!
Photo by: Miss Frauenhofer
Little Mix came together
during Boot Camp. They were
the first girl band in UK X Factor history to ever make it past
week two of the live shows.
They were also the only band in
UK X Factor history to win the
competition. Their first single
was their winning single,
“Cannonball.” After the X Factor, they went on and came out
with two more singles, which
will be featured on their first
album. The songs are “Wings”
and “DNA.”
Little Mix is a great
band. Its members have strong
voices, and their music is varied.
Check out their music today!
