2013 Annual Report - YMCA of Rapid City
2013 Annual Report FAMILY ATMOSPHERE Kellie Meissner and her family have been members of the YMCA of Rapid City since November of 2005. Her husband regularly uses the Wellness Center while Kellie herself takes Pilates, Boot Camp and swims. After meeting other parents in the Child Watch Nursery, Kellie has gotten more involved with other organizations and parenting groups. Recently Kellie explained to her child that one reason their family belongs to the Y because the Y benefits the community. STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY “Tradition!” So shouted Tevye in Fiddler On the Roof, as he was faced with changing social, political and even family dynamics. Besides being a fan of this classic production, one can’t help but be sympathetic with Tevye. After all, look at the many changing dynamics taking place today, only much faster than even Tevye could imagine. It is within this context of lightning fast change that the YMCA excels. Think about it. On the one hand, the YMCA as an organization is a change agent. We work toward change. Through programs, partnerships, planning and promotion the YMCA is driven toward positive changes. For example, YMCA Day Camp plans were accelerated by 10 years with the new YMCA Giraffic Park located on Hwy 385. YMCA LaCroix Links underwent major changes and now serves as a great new home to The First Tee. The YMCA of Rapid City is on the cutting edge of national initiatives by serving as a test site for Aquatic Access and Child Safety. We are constantly developing new programs to foster change. Change is a part of who we are. On the other hand, the YMCA doesn’t change and doesn’t plan to change. You see this every day as the YMCA remains grounded in love, compassion and service and still unashamedly seeks to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. These two hands thus proclaim that the YMCA is firmly rooted in tradition while at the same time promoting change that constantly improves youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. And that, dear friends, is much steadier than…than…a fiddler on the roof! Sincerely, Mike Bowers Board President Roger Gallimore Executive Director GIVING BACK After her son was born over a year ago, Allison Turgyan wanted to get connected with other new moms while gaining support toward healthy living habits. That’s when she heard from a friend about volunteer opportunities at the YMCA. Now Allison participates in Pilates, cycling, body sculpt, pi-yo and swimming. Plus, she and her young son are taking the Mommy and Me swim class. “The best part is getting to socialize,” says Allison. He began slowly, but over 70 lbs. and 10 inches later, Hector has noticeably increased his strength and stamina. Hector has since increased his workouts and gotten into other sports. 2013 HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY • A ribbon-cutting event on June 3 marked the official opening • Volunteers, staff and kids helped cut the ribbon at YMCA of YMCA Giraffic Park on Hwy 385. Faced with extreme poverty, Rachel and her mother would spend the next five years living at the women’s shelter, different motels and various rental units. Yet through all of this instability there was one constant – the YMCA. And it’s a good thing, too. For when Rachel received a youth sponsorship membership as a 6-year old, Rachel was an extremely loud, argumentative and annoying child in the afterschool programs at the YMCA Youth Outreach Center. Having few social skills, she was unable to make or keep friends. But through the loving and patient guidance given by YMCA staff, not to mention the only sense of stability in her life, Rachel spent the next 5years growing into an engaging young girl with lots of friends. In fact, Rachel is now a member of the YMCA Leaders Club and is devoted to learning and volunteering. One can’t help but smile as you observe how she has blossomed and is well on her way to breaking the chains of poverty and instability. 2013 PROGRAMS The YMCA of Rapid City is a mission-driven organization that strengthens the Rapid City, Custer and Edgemont areas through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
