Great show!” John & Barb Nicholson, Calgary “Good adherence to the tradition…to the tales…to the legendary powerfulness of the gods and their human-like foibles.” David Mudry, Calgary from THE TESTS OF THOR GRADES: 9 - 12 “We never cease to be amazed by your productions…we’d liked to see this one a second time…impressive!” Laura and Mike McCormack, Calgary Length: 50-Minutes, plus 10-minute Question Period ALSO AVAILABLE IN 60-MINUTE FESTIVAL PRESENTATION AND/OR PUBLIC 2HOUR VERSION WITH 15-MINUTE INTERMISSION THOR’S HAMMER: For nearly five years, Bob and Dana had a Viking show in mind. The world premiere in 1995 bears witness to extensive research and creative excellence. Re-creating props, costumes, set pieces, swords, helmets and the like from actual historical artifacts and archeological digs, they have built a show around the poetic and prose edda of the Vikings from Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. They explore both the mythology and the legends of the gods, heroes, dwarves and demons of this northern culture of Europe that flourished for over 300 years and is still with us today. Giants, the World Serpent, Thor, Odin, Loki - the trickster, all come to life in a vivid and fascinating depiction of the Vikings! Humour, mystery, trickery and the final battle of the gods is handled with skill and obvious delight. See how Loki’s lips are sewn up by Brokk the Dwarf and how Thor gets his hammer, Crusher, back from the Giant Thrym disguised as a ‘bride’! “Sun.Ergos is an amazing duo. Bob Greenwood and Dana Luebke have seemingly boundless and varied talents in the fields of ORIGINAL drama, dance and song – and in the making of friends. Whether they are presenting an entirely new programme or repeating certain favorite items of past years, I am always enthralled. They are always obviously delighting in performing for their audiences of FRIENDS of all ages. For over a dozen years, I have been an eager, admiring member of their audiences, and I delight in introducing others to the cultural presentations of Sun.Ergos” Miss Dorothy Hawley, retired Calgary Senior High School Teacher of French INFORMATION SHEET Celebrating the differences! Recognizing the similarities! “Working Together” - Moving the Human Spirit! TITLE OF SHOW(S): LENGTH OF SHOW(S): TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: THOR’S HAMMER 50-minutes, plus 10-minute Question Period [see enclosed tech sheet] THEME [describe in one sentence]: Norse and Viking legends and myths are explored in this show CONTENT [brief description of pieces in show]: This show contains stories, legends, myths and music from the Vikings and Norse cultures of Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. It re-creates the rugged lives of gods, dwarves, giants and heroes, the vital characters of these cultures. Swash-buckling, high-energy, quiet intensity, hilarious situations and solutions provide a backdrop for some truly remarkable manifestations of how the Vikings saw themselves, their gods and their world. THOR’S HAMMER is presented with amazing authenticity, in its costumes, props and atmosphere. Clear, clean and stark staging create a simple world in which some of the most elaborate and vivid myths in all history evolve and unravel. It is a revelation of a culture which flourished for 300 years and still affects us in our common humanity to this day. GOAL [what is the purpose of this show]: To witness and express the textural richness of the Viking cultures and to show modern audiences their relevance to today’s world. POINT OF VIEW OF ARTISTS [brief description]: Both Bob and Dana have made a commitment to explore the world’s various cultures, contemporary and historical, in order to witness and reveal ideas and concepts of our human existence which have been known for thousands of years and which still influence us all today in one form or another. CLASSIFICATION [i.e.: ADULT, FESTIVAL, FAMILY, YOUNG AUDIENCE]: Festival and Family audiences. PRESENTATION [skills used to present show]: The setting is simplicity itself: silk drapes on either side of the stage hide the prows of Viking ships and form a great fjord in the central up-stage area. These silks become the colorful tapestry of the emotional moods of the production. Centre-stage is a round platform covered with a large, beige cloth on which are played helmets, shields, spears, costume pieces, drinking horns, heraldic trumpets, swords and the like. This platform is the “howe” or grave site of the gods, around which all the action takes place. The costumes are in shades of browns, textured with furs, leather-thongs, flowing capes, facsimiles of Viking jewelry made by Bob and Dana themselves. The script comes from the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda of Iceland which is a retelling of all the Vikings stories from all the lands in which they lived or which they conquered. Some of the stories are done in the elevated language of the poetry, some in common, everyday language, some in the form of folk-tale story-telling, some in a formal, presentational style. It is an entertaining, hilarious, thought-provoking production that will introduce any audience to the Viking world. TARGET AUDIENCE [i.e.: Seniors, multi-cultural groups, etc.]: Festival and Family audiences; Young People’s audiences; seniors and multi-cultural groups of all backgrounds. CAST [see Bios]: Robert Greenwood (actor) and [Mr.] Dana Luebke (dancer-actor) LANGUAGE(S) IN WHICH SHOW IS PERFORMED: English [script], Icelandic, Norwegian [songs] more...
