NDIANAPOLIS - Canstruction is one of the most unique food charities
in the world. Each year, Canstruction, Inc. holds design and build competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of
canned food. In each city after the structures are built and the winners
declared the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits.
At the close of the competitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food banks for distribution to community emergency feeding programs.
The late Cheri Melillo, a member of the Society of Design Administration
(SDA), conceived and held the first Canstruction event in New York City in
1992. During Cheri's tenure as the SDA's National Public Relations Chair she
developed Canstruction with the vision to unite the design and construction
community in a series of friendly competitions that actually improved the lives
of the underprivileged and underserved.
Canstruction has grown to become one of the largest contributors to food
banks in the world. Since its humble beginning, Canstruction has held design/
build competitions in over 140 cities world-wide donating over 15 million
pounds of canned food to alleviate the plague of hunger and malnutrition.
This year, Indianapolis Canstruction was held at the Indiana State Fair
Grounds in conjunction with the State Fair. Eighteen companies made up the
9 teams competing this year.
The People’s Choice Award went to BSA LifeStructures for their structure
titled “Tractor Tipin.” Jurors voted for CSO and ERMCO’s structure titled “Indiana: Crossroads of America” which also took home an award for Structural
Integrity. Schmidt Associated won Best Meal and Most Cans with their Olympics themed design, “Inspire a Generation.” Winning for Best Use of Labels
was the team of arcDESIGN and Charles C. Brandt Construction Company for
“Racing to Beat Hunger, Thirsty for the Win.”

Winners in the local completion can go on to compete nationally in the
Canstruction International Competition held each May.
Last year, the Fort Wayne chapter of Canstruction was listed as 5th among
all chapters in the amount of cans donated, raising a total of 68,033 pounds of
canned food, the equivalent of 50,344 meals.
RLTurner organized the CanStruction event and Kroger donoated food at
cost.

Indiana University and BSA LifeStructures Break Ground on Neurosciences Research
Building
INDIANAPOLIS – BSA LifeStructures and Messer Construction Co.
ceremonially broke ground on Indiana University’s Neurosciences Research
Building in Indianapolis. The 137,000 square foot facility provides research
space for a broad range of neuroscience research.
The Neurosciences Research Building is a collaborative initiative between
the Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana University Health, bringing together research and clinical care focused on neurological disorders. With
inpatient care, outpatient care and research in one location, the traditional
barriers between clinical care and research can be broken down, facilitating
and expediting the translation of scientific discoveries to practical applications.
“The Neurosciences Research Building will provide researchers and healthcare professionals the flexibility and adaptability they need to achieve successful medical and research outcomes,” said Jim Hill, BSA LifeStructures
principal and lead architect on the project. “BSA LifeStructures is proud to
collaborate with Indiana University on this project and looks forward to aiding
in their pursuit to enhance medical collaboration and improve healing results
for the community.”
The facility layout fosters collaborative research through shared technical
support and centralized analytical facilities. Flexible equipment and resources
allow the research spaces to adapt to different discovery pursuits and adjust
to technology over time. Rather than assignment of research space to traditional departmental units, the school has formed interdisciplinary, thematic
teams of researchers with broad expertise and a disease oriented focus.
“This modern, flexible building design will promote the collaborations between basic scientists and clinicians that are key to future success in biomedical research, and to our ability to transform laboratory discoveries into important new therapies for patients,” said David S. Wilkes, executive associate
dean for research affairs at the IU School of Medicine.
The exterior of the Neurosciences Research Building features an efficient
skin, composed mainly of glass that will help the building seek LEED Silver
Certification and provide the interior with an abundance of natural light. The
exterior aesthetics are consistent with other Indiana University research facilities and represents the ground breaking research occurring inside the facility.
“Serving as the construction manager – agent for this job, our role is to
work collaboratively with BSA LifeStructures to advise, coordinate and inspect
the project design and construction from beginning to end,” said Steve Bestard, vice president and GM for Messer Construction Co. “We are excited
to be part of this important project and bring the vision for it to life. In doing
so we’ll be using Building Information Modeling (BIM technology, an advanced
method for creating a virtual 3D representation of the physical and functional
characteristics of the building, as well as Lean Construction techniques to deliver a building that is built with the same forward-thinking principles in which
it was designed.”

Rowland Design Spends Two Days Giving
Back to Others
INDIANAPOLIS – Over the years Rowland Design has had the privilege of having one of the largest and most up-to-date design libraries in
the Midwest at its fingertips. The success of the library has been largely
due to the dutiful manufactures representatives who keep it, and Rowland’s designers, up-to-date on current products and their best uses. In
appreciation of these industry professionals, Rowland Design hosted a
picnic in their honor. Attendees were treated to a down-home cookout,
complete with pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and iced sweet tea.
“We work with so many wonderful companies and are grateful for all
they do for us,” said Jill Rose, head of account development and sales at
Rowland Design. “This cookout was a simple way for us to say ‘thanks’.”
The next day, the team from Rowland Design partnered with Habitat
for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis on a local build. The volunteers
spent the day painting doors, patching walls, adding siding and installing
baseboards. It was a great experience for all involved. The home, part
of a revitalization effort around IPS School 51, was dedicated last month.

Work Underway at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center
EDINBURGH, Ind. – On October 18, 2010, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, the Indiana National Guard, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Indiana Department of Correction signed an agreement
releasing more than 1,200 acres of DNR land north of Camp Atterbury located
in Edinburgh in exchange for approximately 2,000 acres at Putnamville Correctional Facility. The military is using the land to build additional support facilities to include an expansion of the railroad and vehicle deployment processing
capability, a dining facility and housing for soldiers training at Camp Atterbury.
July 3, 2012 marked a historic day for Camp Atterbury with the groundbreaking of the first of a 2-phase construction project. Two battalion-level Operational Readiness Training Complexes (ORTC) will be built as part of the agreement made in late 2010. The first phase includes building two barracks and the
second the building of an additional barracks and dining facility.
American Structure Point, Inc. is the architectural engineering firm contracted to design the first ORTC with CSO Construction Group, Inc. as
the firm contracted for the second ORTC. Hunt will serve as the general
contractor for both phases of construction, which is scheduled for completion
by summer 2014.
The new barracks will increase bed-capacity by 1,176. Plans remain in place
to expand the railroad capability of Camp Atterbury to meet its mission requirements. The 1,250 acres also allows for relocation of facilities that are currently situated in aircraft safety zones bordering the Camp Atterbury airfield.
