Best of luck to the Class of 2015! 2 Saint Mary Messenger | Summer 2015 From the Principal Letter from the Principal Welcome, Pope Francis!! Everyone is getting ready for the World Meeting of Families and for the Holy Father’s visit to Philadelphia. What will these events mean for the City of Philadelphia? Well, our fair city will certainly be showcased nationally as we welcome 10,000 – 15,000 guests for the World Meeting of Families and then another 1.5 million for the events of the weekend to follow. In addition, the city will show everyone how prepared we are for moving, feeding, housing and blessing huge crowds of people over a seven-day span. It’s all very exciting and challenging. It’s hard to imagine how we will all be touched by this very special week in Archdiocesan and City history. Because of the Meeting and the Pope’s visit, all Archdiocesan schools will be closed from September 23 through the 25th. We invited Pope Francis to visit our school, since we are the first Catholic parish school in the country, founded by the Jesuits in 1782. Maybe we will not have to get to the Parkway to see him! At 6:00 PM on June 10, I watched our graduates process into Old St. Joseph Church to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. Could it be nine years since they started Kindergarten? It didn’t seem possible, yet these students have completed their elementary education here at St. Mary’s and have made us proud. Members of this class have served as altar servers, lectors, gift bearers, and choir members at school liturgies; as ambassadors, giving tours to potential school families; as representatives of our school on basketball courts and softball fields; as young scientists at school and city-wide Science Fairs. This small but gifted group of 22 students has been awarded scholarships to high school totaling over $260,000. The high schools they will attend will be better places because of the presence of our Class of 2015! Congratulations to them and to their families. We ask that you continue to support all of our students as you have done so faithfully over the years. Your contributions to the Annual Giving Campaign, the Walkathon, and other fundraisers allow us to provide students with an outstanding Catholic education while keeping tuition at a moderate level. We thank you for your commitment to St. Mary Interparochial School. May God continue to bless you and your family. Jeanne M. John Large – Pastor Delegate Mrs. Jeanne Meredith - Principal Mrs. Christina Haciski – Director of Advancement Mrs. Maryellen Raday – Board Meeting Secretary 3 Advisory Board Update In the spring of 2009, financial and physical plant concerns led to blessed impetus for community action and support of St. Mary Interparochial School. Soon, Focus Groups were created to hear the voice of the community and work began in earnest to create a Strategic Plan. With the support of Father Gerald Carey, former Pastor Delegate and Jeanne Meredith, Principal, numerous volunteers shared their time, talent and treasure, to create a comprehensive assessment of St. Mary Interparochial School and develop ambitious goals for its future focusing on: • Capacity building (mission, vision and strategic planning); • Governance (broadening our base of support through the creation of an Advisory Board); • Advancement (marketing, communications and fundraising); • Finance and enrollment; • Academic enrichment and; • Professional development. Tax Credit for Business Owners will help children become “Christ-Centered Leaders for the 21st Century” The Educational Improvement Tax Credit program (EITC) allows qualified businesses to fulfill their state tax burden while supporting financial aid at St. Mary School. The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit program (OSTC) allows qualified businesses to fulfill their state tax burden while supporting lowincome students who reside in low-achieving school districts in PA. Over 90% of our student population resides in a catchment zone for a low achieving school. We successfully implemented that strategic plan and have witnessed our school’s ongoing achievement of academic excellence, strong financial management, development of our advisory board and implementation of advancement initiatives including fundraising, marketing and communications. We envisioned our future as a strong Catholic school and we attained that goal! The time has come once again for us to create a new vision for the next 3 to 5 years. In March, we formed a Strategic Planning Steering Committee led by Michael Detweiler, current Advisory Board member, Jeanne Meredith, Principal, Christina Haciski, Director of Advancement and Advisory Board members Regina Kelly and John Frame. Our Steering Committee worked closely with Biddle and Associates, a strategic consulting firm, to develop the scope of work necessary to formulate a strong vision for our school. In the early spring, parent and community surveys along with focus groups were conducted to gather the necessary information which was critical in shaping Do you or your employer qualify? Are you or your employer one of the following? • Small business owner • Bank • Insurance Company • Corporation • LLC • Title Company • Mutual Thrift Company Partnership • Partnerships can split a gift among several EITC-approved nonprofits. Want to double check if you or your employer qualifies? If you pay one of the following taxes, you do! • Corporate Net Income Tax • Capital Stock Franchise Tax • Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax • Title Insurance Companies Shares Tax • Insurance Premiums Tax • Mutual Thrift Institution Tax • Personal Income Tax of S Corporation Shareholders • Personal Income Tax of Partnership Partners our six task forces: Catholic Identity, Academic Program, Governance, Finance, Buildings and Ground, and Advancement. Parents, teachers, staff and community members were asked to serve on these task forces and provide recommendations to the specific focusing questions. Over the summer, the recommendations will be reviewed and the Steering Committee will begin formulating five to seven strategic goals, along with supporting detailed action steps to be completed over the next 3 to 5 years. In the early fall, a completed report from our task force work and strategic goals will be provided to our school community. As always, our greatest goal is to provide an exemplary Catholic and academic experience for our students and we would like to thank you for your ongoing support of our school. A special thanks to the dedicated members of our Advisory Board, who have successfully helped implement our strategic plan and carry out our mission. These individuals volunteered their time, shared their talents and bestowed their treasures. To apply, you can download the EITC/OSTC application or apply online at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Applications are now being accepted. If you qualify, we do hope you will designate your tax dollars to St. Mary Interparochial School. If you need help getting started or have any additional questions, please contact Christina Haciski at 215-923-7522 or email advancement@ saintmarys.us. Thank you in advance for considering the students of St. Mary Interparochial in such a special way. You will change lives. 4 Saint Mary Messenger | Summer 2015 Thirteenth Annual Walkathon: Supporting Art, Music, Language, and Culture Education for our Children On Wednesday, May 13, 2015 which happened to be a pleasant spring day, our students, parents and teachers enjoyed a lovely walk through our historic city of Philadelphia while viewing several well known neighborhood murals. This vital school fundraiser that supports Art, Music, and Language Studies at St. Mary commonly known as The Walkathon. This year, we celebrated our beautiful murals which included a special student presentation from local mural artist, David Guinn. The 13th Annual Walkathon raised $32,000+ and all of it has been applied to our Art, Music, and Language programs. Our arts programs flourish with committed, specialized educators as a direct consequence of the money raised. Students, parents, and educators all benefit. For parents, these programs add a richness to our children’s education that many schools simply do not offer. Students buzz about ‘Bending’ a St. Mary rule. Everyone loves to walk with their family and friends. Thank you to everyone who supported this event through the multiple fundraising tools. Some families took advantage of Easter family visits to garner donations. Others used the Letters to Loved Ones campaign to reach out. Many utilize the Ad Book since local businesses appreciate a low cost vehicle to reach customers. However you chose to support our students’ Arts, Music and Language program, WE THANK YOU! A complete list of supporters will be acknowledged. Special thanks to our loyal co-Chairs, Toni and Rich Autieri (current St. Mary parents) for all of their tireless efforts in coordinating all aspects of this wonderful event. All St. Mary’s athletes learn to play hard and recognize the values of respect and grace when winning and courage and selfreflection when losing. In 2015, the JV Girls basketball team finished a strong season and won the Bronze Medal game in the league playoffs, and the Girls volleyball teams finished 3rd and 4th in league play. The Storm teams play competitively under the guidance of parents who volunteer their time, energy, talents and resources. Coaches are committed to help our budding athletes learn about teamwork and collaboration, improve their skills and knowledge of the games, set challenging goals, get great exercise, and most of all to have some fun! We encourage parents to consider coaching our teams, so please contact the St. Mary’s office if you are interested. St. Mary’s would like to express our gratitude to parents who volunteered as coaches during 2014-15 season, including: Carl Randolph (boys varsity basketball) Nick Masino and Joanne Jackson (girls varsity basketball) Keith Czaja and Harry Kane (girls JV basketball) Chris Isaacson (girls volleyball, boys JV basketball, and girls softball) Donna Gonzales (girls softball) Sports Night Our sincere apologies if we have missed anyone in this list, please contact us and let us know. Our first-year underwater robotics team placed in the top 4 of the 2015 Philly SeaPerch Challenge, a joint initiative of Drexel University and the US Office of Naval Research. Forty-eight students in grades 5 through 8 who attended our new STEAM after school program learned science and engineering concepts while designing and constructing an underwater ROV. Their mission: Recover a US drone flight data recorder that had crashed in the ocean in hostile territory. Our team was required to navigate a Remote Operated Vehicle through a submerged obstacle course, disable a mine, and collect a sample of the drone stealth material for analysis before resurfacing. The Stormbots not only achieved in the Pool Performance category of the competition, but also demonstrated their mastery of the research and design process in their presentation to the judges. Founded in 1782 by the Jesuit fathers of Old St. Joseph’s Church, St. Mary is known as “The Mother School” of catholic parochial education and is credited with influencing Catholic educational patterns in this country. Situated near Independence Hall and other pivotal sites in old Philadelphia, it served children for more than a century before closing in 1902 after a devastating fire. St. Mary’s reopened in 1968, again with a distinction: With students drawn from six different parishes, it was the first interparochial school in the nation. St. Mary Interparochial School is situated in Independence National Park and serves 250 children from all over the City of Philadelphia and its suburbs.
