On March 8th, our Decathletes participated in the annual Academic Decathlon. They competed against 24 other schools. We placed 5th in logic and 11th overall! Thank you to Ms. Howard and all the coaches for helping our decathletes! Don’t forget that March 16th is a minimum day. The faculty will be attending a workshop. 2015 Golden Eagles Golf Tournament Thank you Mr. Drummond and the Golf Committee for a beautiful day and great dinner! GSCS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Anthony Riel (GSCS 1997-2006) Some of Anthony’s favorite memories include his student council speech where he proclaimed how much he loved math and encouraged some students in the crowd to chant “show me the money,” winning first place in math at the academic decathlon, and the various 8th grade events, such as the Much Ado About Nothing play, the Grease musical, and the graduation trip to Disneyland. However, Anthony really just misses being a kid again and running around freely and carelessly with his classmates during recess. One very important value that Anthony learned from Good Shepherd and his Catholic faith is integrity. Integrity became the foundation of his character, which he carried on throughout high school, college, and the rest of his life. This value of integrity and always doing that right thing was highly emphasized in the philosophy of St. Augustine High School, the all-boys Catholic high school Anthony attended. At Saints, Anthony was a student athlete in Track and Field and served on student council for all four years. A few weeks after graduating from St. Augustine High School in 2010, Anthony entered Basic Cadet Training at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. At the Air Force Academy, Anthony went through a strenuous four year program juggling military, physical, and academic training. As a cadet at the academy, he also experienced this phenomenon known as “snow” and suffered through temperatures as low as -45 degrees. He was on Dean’s list all 8 semesters at the academy and took a variety of unique classes such as soaring, powered flight, unmanned aircraft vehicles, scuba diving, water survival, combat survival, and golf. The Air Force Academy follows a strict honor code to never “lie, steal or cheat,” and Anthony’s integrity made it easy for him to follow this code and succeed throughout his cadet career. Anthony recently graduated from the Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering Management and a minor in Russian. At graduation he was also commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Now Anthony is back at the Air Force Academy working with the Department of Management. He is waiting to move to Laughlin AFB at Del Rio, Texas, in April for pilot training in hopes to fly fighter jets. Good Shepherd Catholic School Winter Sports Week 7 Summary Kindergarten The kindergarten soccer team ended the season winning impressively 4-0 against Saint Martin. That brings record this season to 5-2. They have all come a long way over the course of the season. We hope they enjoyed their time and will continue their winning ways for many years to come. Outstanding season Kindergarten. 1st & 2nd Girls Well the girls ended their season with a bit of drama, edging out a 2-1 victory over St. James. They played a complete game and demonstrated a fighting attitude the entire day and season. We are all proud of their effort and have enjoyed watching them develop their skills through the season. 1st & 2nd Boys The 1st and 2nd grade boys finished the season with a very exciting victory against St. Johns Encinitas. The final score was GSCS 5 and St. Johns Encinitas 0. The boys played hard to preserve the shutout and finished the season with 4 wins, 2 ties and only 1 loss. They were a well balanced team with strong performances from many players and, we can’t wait to watch them grow into champions. 3rd & 4th Girls Another nail biter for the girls this weekend, losing 5-3 to St. Columba. They tied the game early in the 2nd half but 2 late goals would seal their fate. The girls may not have had the win total they wanted but, that doesn’t always show the entire picture. They represented themselves, their families and GSCS with pride. 3rd Boys The boys played their hearts out this Saturday and all season long. This was another team that knows records don’t always reflect the truth. This is a strong and determined group, we know they’ll bounce back and be stronger than ever. 4th Boys The boys played great on Saturday and despite losing, they grinded all the way to the end. Week in and week out the boys played short-handed but never used that as an excuse. As they continue to grow we hope they’ll continue to give the same effort, great job boys. JV Basketball When you think about saving the best for last the JV boys basketball team should come to mind. This Saturday down 2 with 6 seconds left they boys pulled off their best performance of the season by hitting 3 free throws to win the game, an absolutely unbelievable performance. With the win the boys brought their record above 500 to 5-4, well done guys. Varsity Basketball With their regular season over the team turned their sights to the Saints tournament. In their opening round game the boys cruised to a 15 point victory over a tough St. Rita’s squad. On Sunday they played 2nd place OLG and, even though they lost the have a chance at redemption next Sunday afternoon. Come out and support them as they take on St. Didacus and look to close out a phenomenal season.
