The Next Level
What Exactly is ‘The Next Level’?
It’s a mythical place mentioned in nearly every signing story: A young athlete
signs a letter of intent to play his or her chosen sport at a college or university, and
he or she is said to be moving on to “The Next Level.” Where is that place? And what
exactly is it? Naturally, those sports stars dream of plying their athletic wares as professionals. Who wouldn’t want to get paid to play something they love? However, the truth
is reaching any pinnacle in athletics is a process requiring baby steps. Some might have
the good fortune to sign with a major university, but those particular athletes are few
and far between. Then there are those who choose to go the junior college route. Angelina College has been a prime launching pad for players looking to improve both athletically and academically in order to get a shot at yet another “Next Level.”
Adrick McKinney was a big kid with plenty of size and raw talent when head
coach Todd Neighbors watched him play at Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth,
Texas. McKinney signed with AC and spent his first year learning how tough the
competition can be inside Region XIV. More than anything, he learned what it would
take for him to move up another notch. McKinney worked with Neighbors throughout
the off season, developing his strength, agility and footwork to the point he was nearly
unrecognizable when the next season started. McKinney was one of the more dominant
players in the conference that season, leading to his signing with Texas Christian University, from where McKinney graduated in May.
Lamont Mack was another who, under Neighbors’ tutelage, developed into a
better player in his two years at AC. After signing and competing with the University
of North Carolina-Charlotte, Mack found himself playing professionally overseas – just
like his AC teammate, Jonas Brown, who went from his stint with the Roadrunners to
the University of Louisiana-Monroe to a spot on a professional roster overseas.
The list goes on and on, a chronicle of success stories featuring Roadrunners
who parlayed their abilities and academic successes into college degrees and, in some
cases, professional contracts. Not all those players would have had the opportunity for a
university education had they not developed as Roadrunners.
Angelina College is proving, year after year, that there’s always a “Next Level”, and it
doesn’t stop when one hangs up the sneakers for good. By preparing student athletes for
life on the court and off, the Roadrunner basketball program is testament to the college’s
motto, “It’s a Great Place to Start.”

Coach Biography
Head Coach Todd Neighbors
Head Coach Todd Neighbors enters his ninth season as head coach of the Roadrunners and
15th overall as a head coach at the collegiate level. Neighbors earned his bachelor’s degree at
Southwest Texas State in 1992 and his Master’s degree in Education in 1995 from the University of the Incarnate Word.
In Neighbors’ eight seasons as head coach of the program the Roadrunners have won more
than 60 percent of their games. According to Neighbors, though, it is not about winning games;
it is about the development of his players as young men and student-athletes. “Here at Angelina
College we focus daily on the development of our players. We emphasize to our players the
importance of becoming a better student, person, and player every day. I am in the coaching
profession to have a positive impact on my players’ lives and future. When a player becomes a
member of our family, he becomes a member for life.”
Neighbors joined the Angelina College family in 2005. Prior to that, he served as head coach
for Hill College from 2000-2004, and Ranger College from 1998-2000. During those combined
six years, Neighbors was responsible for recruiting and coaching four All-Americans, seven
All-Region selections, twelve All-Conference players and two Freshmen of the Year honorees.
Several of Neighbors’ former players are currently playing professionally overseas.
He is married to the former Susan Bollinger of Perry, Oklahoma. He has two daughters, Taylor,
age 18 and Kennedy, age 14; and a step-son, Cody, age 21.
Assistant Coach Curtis Nash
Assistant Coach Curtis Nash begins his third season at AC. Before joining Angelina College,
Nash Graduated from L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, TX; then attended South Plains Junior
College where he was selected First Team All-Conference following his freshman season. The
next season, Nash transferred to Hill Junior College, where he played for Coach Todd Neighbors and was selected as a Junior College All-American in 2000-2001 as a sophomore. Nash
received numerous recruiting offers but decided on the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he played for two seasons.
In 2006, he graduated with a B.A. in African Studies. Following his Division-I basketball career,
Nash spent several in the professional ranks, playing for teams throughout the United States
(Texas, Oregon, Florida, and North Carolina), Europe (Holland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, England and Czech Republic) and Canada (Edmonton).
Toward the end of his career, Nash started his own “Skill Development” program (curtisnashglobaltraining.com) to help athletes improve their game and personal growth. To this and his
coaching endeavors he brings a passion for helping others achieve more not only in basketball
but life in general. Nash lived ten years in Charlotte, North Carolina, but was born and raised
in Fort Worth, TX and is the son of Rochelle Nash-Newton and the late Curtis Nash Sr.
