From the Executive Director
It was my honor to give the opening remarks at the
Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Product
Safety and Compliance Seminar, which was held last
month in Rosemont, Ill. In recognition of the seminar’s
25th anniversary, I also moderated a panel with
long-time safety experts Brian Ahlschwede (retired from
John Deere) and Steve Burdette (retired from CNH
Industrial). Brian and Steve shared their inspiring stories
about what motivated them to pursue careers in product
safety and what they see for the future.
I started working for AEM in 1990 (the organization was
called the Equipment Manufacturers Institute at the time),
and one of my first assignments was to work with industry safety leaders and
launch the safety seminar program. It was never the intent of the safety
seminar, nor of the planning committee, to alter standards work, regulatory
actions, or technology advancement, but the cooperative environment that the
safety seminar has fostered over the years has done tremendous good in all
those areas.
The ongoing experience of industry representatives coming together and
sharing information for the common good has helped drive the industry’s
collective passion for product safety. For me, it’s especially gratifying to see that
the safety seminar is still going strong after 25 years. Click here to see my
opening remarks at this year’s event.

Nominees Sought for 2017 Society Elections
With this year's elections behind us, and new officers prepare to take their
positions in July, at the end of the annual international meeting, it is time to
look ahead to the 2017 leadership ballot. Nominees are being sought for
look ahead to the 2017 leadership ballot. Nominees are being sought for
president-elect and three trustee positions. Nominating committee positions
will also be filled for the following Technical Communities and Districts: ASE,
ES, ITSC, MS, NRES, PRS, District 2, and District 4. Members of the Nominating
committee have the serious but rewarding task of securing candidates for the
Society's annual election of officers, which include the president-elect, trustees,
and members of the Nominating committee itself. The slate they prepare is
then presented in January for ballot by the general ("corporate") membership.
The committee comprises representatives from each of the Society's technical
and geographic units, as well as the international membership, who currently
serve on staggered two-year terms.
Those wishing to put forth nominations are encouraged to submit names and
supporting materials to the Nominating committee before the start of the 2016
annual international meeting. Prospective names can be forwarded to any of the
following committee members, regardless of group they represent (identified in
parentheses): Lalit Verma (chair), Joy Agnew (District 5), Sreekala Bajwa
(International), Thomas Brumm (EOPD), James Dooley (ES), Garey Fox
(NRES), Mark Hanna (MS), Paul Heinemann (District 1), Roger Hoy (ESH), Larry

Students! Ready, Set, Claim Your CNH-Sponsored Foundation
Dinner Tickets
For the sixth year in a row, CNH Industrial has graciously donated 50 tickets for
student members of ASABE/CSBE to attend the popular Foundation Dinner, held
at the annual international meeting. This year's event will take place Tuesday
evening, July 19, at Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse, and will feature Dr. Ray
Wheeler, who heads the Kennedy Space Center's Advanced Life-Support
research efforts.
ASABE Foundation events at the ASABE 2016 Annual International Meeting offer
excellent opportunities to network with others in the profession, and they
should be on every student's must-do list. The dinner is one of the most
popular and is regularly a sell-out. If you'd like a ticket, you must send a
message toMark Crossley no later than June 17. Your name will then be entered
in the drawing to be held the following week. If your name is selected, we will
contact you with details for claiming your free ticket. This is a $100 value, so
don't delay! Good luck!

Georgia Section Energizes with Recent Meeting
The Georgia section
of ASABE met
recently for the first
time in several years.
Interest in reviving
section activities was
very high, with
attendance from
industry, academia,
government, and
students. A large
contingent of
students, with a faculty advisor, were in attendance from Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College.
Section members expressed strong interest in increasing the number of section
members nominated for ASABE awards and improving attendance and regularity
of section meetings. An invited panel discussion centered on challenges and
opportunities for the future. Travis Tsunemori, ASABE staff engineer, provided a
Society update from headquarters.

Ag Engineering History Buffs Needed!
Texas A&M's Department of Biological and
Agricultural Engineering is trying to identify the
subject of a beautifully sculpted bust, shown at
right. Perhaps one of our readers can help?
Daniels Scoates Hall, formerly the Agricultural
Engineering Building, was designed with four
niches at its entry that were intended to display
busts of renowned agricultural engineers. It is
uncertain whether all four were ever filled.
However, three busts are known to have been
displayed and can be accounted for: two that
were stolen, and the one shown in the photo.
Oral history suggests that the three known
busts were of John Deere, Cyrus McCormick,
and Jerome Increase Case, yet the individual
depicted in this remaining sculpture does not
resemble any of those notable figures.
Can you identify the subject? An additional clue
might be that on the back of the bust's base is engraved the name of the
prominent Chicago-based sculptor and educator Lorado Taft.
Please send your best guesses to Steve Searcy. Any help is appreciated.

Visual Challenge 6 - Call for Entries
Engineers have a unique
responsibility to
communicate technical
concepts to a larger
audience. Traditionally,
that is done with words
and numbers. However,
communication in
images offers intriguing
“statements without
words.” Visual
imagination combined
with technical skill can
produce
astonishing—and
deeply
informative—images.
We encourage you to
participate in our sixth
annual challenge!
To celebrate the visual aspects of agricultural and biological engineering,
Resource magazine asks you to submit one or more entries in any or all of three
categories: photographs/captured images; illustrations/drawings; and
informational/explanatory graphics.
The Visual Challenge is an opportunity to be creative and to show those outside
the ABE field: "This is what we do." Use your entry to convey the beauty and
meaning of your work, your research developments, and your Society division.
Submit original work as an e-mail attachment in jpg format (300 dpi or higher)
to Sue Mitrovich, Resource managing editor. Enter "Visual Challenge" in the
subject line, and include your full name, professional affiliation, contact
information, and a title with a brief description of your entry in your message. If
necessary, include a source credit and an assurance that permission has been
granted to submit, and possibly reprint, the entry. Multiple entries are welcome.
The winning entries will be selected by Resource staff and published in the
January/February 2017 issue.

Copyright - Can I Post My ASABE-Copyrighted Material
Online?
Digital tools have made it very easy to circulate published works, and ASABE's
authors frequently contact the Publications department about re-posting their
papers and articles that have been published by ASABE. Here's a short summary
of author rights and restrictions on ASABE-copyrighted material.
You may post your meeting papers and journal articles on your own website
and on your employer’s website. Website ownership is defined as personal
control of the domain name and content, such as “YourName.com.” It does n o t
include one's pages on Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, academia.edu, or similar
social networking websites.
Permission extends only to the original authors. Also, although commonly
practiced, posting copyrighted material on ResearchGate or a third-party
website is illegal. The latter has proved to be problematic for ASABE, and we
pursue violators to every extent possible.
Rather than post the documents, authors are encouraged to publish links to
their articles, using the unique document digital object identifier (DOI) number.
This link will redirect to your document in the ASABE Technical Library. For
example, if your DOI number is 10.13031/aim.20152115668, the web address
for it is: http://dx.doi.org/10.13031/aim.20152115668.
ASABE members and users of libraries or companies with an ASABE site license
have access to the entire content of the Technical Library. You may purchase
other usage rights at Copyright Clearance Center.
You'll find more information about copyrights and permissions at
www.asabe.org/Copyright, including answers to the following:
Do I need permission to use ASABE-copyrighted material in another
publication?
Do I need permission from other publishers to use their material in an
ASABE publication?
Can I use ASABE-copyrighted material in my slide presentation or
handouts?
