Richard Neutra (1892-1970) helped develop the
style of California Modern and was an immense
influence on American designers. Born in
Vienna, Neutra went to school at the Technical
University there, studying under Adolf Loos.
Loos taught him about the burgeoning American
style and Neutra was inspired in particular by the
work of Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1919, after
fighting in World War I, he and his new wife
moved to Germany and he worked with architect
and designer Erich Mendelsohn. Neutra
immigrated to the US in 1923, landing first in
Chicago and Wisconsin where he worked briefly
with Frank Lloyd Wright, before settling down in
Los Angeles in 1925. In 1929 designed the now
classic Lovell Health House in Los Angeles. A
cantilever design built into the side of a hill, the
house was customized for the client Dr. Lovell
who requested outdoor sleeping porches and a
flat lower area for exercise equipment. In 1929,
Neutra also designed R.J. Neutra Elementary
School. He is also known for his 1946 Kaufmann
house as well as for his participation in the early
Case Study House Programs. His 1952 Moore
House in Ojai, California achieved an innovative
stylistic balance between domicile and
environment. Neutra designed a reflecting pool
for the water storage, building the house so that
it seemed to float on the pond like an oasis.
Richard Joseph died on April 16, 1970.

What was happenin’ in 1965?
1965, It doesn’t seem that long ago, does it? 50 years, that’s hard to believe. What isn’t hard to believe is
all the changes that have happened. For instance, the average price for a new house was $13,600, but
the average income was only $6,450. Gas was only 31¢ per gallon, and rent was $118 a month!
You could also buy 5 loaves of bread for about $1.
Ben Stiller, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ty Pennington, and J K Rowling were born this year. The Beatles
released the movie and album Help! in 1965, and Jerry Garcia played with the Grateful Dead for
their first concert. The books Dune, Hotel, and The Man with the Golden Gun were released.
Warren Buffet gains controlling interest of Berkshire-Hathaway, at $18 per share. In August 2014, you
would need $200,000 to buy one share!
