Although the players were sad to see their coaches leave, they are excited to meet and play for the new coaches. The four resigning coaches are Mrs. Cristy Chapman-Uhrig, girls volleyball, Mr. Jeff Urhig, boys volleyball, Mr. Mike Jacot, fo o t b a l l , a n d M r. Kev i n Ricks, boys waterpolo. Coach Chapman-Uhrig and Coach Uhrig have been blessings for the volleyball program the past few years. While at Santa Margarita, Coach Chapman led our Lady Eagles to many league championships and one CIF championship in 2008. Coach Uhrig has also led the boys to CIF as finalists and league championships multiple years. Mr. Uhrig ’s job has relocated them to Kentucky ; they will truly be missed by the Santa Margarita volleyball family. Our new coach for the volleyball program is Bryan Cottriel. Before becoming an Eagle coach, he coached at Great Oak High School until 2006. There he led the team to a 19-8 record. Cottriel also accomplished CIF championships during the three years that he coached at Newport Harbor High School under his coaching belt. As an assistant coach at Newport Harbor High School, he helped win two state championships and three CIF championships. Cottriel is confident in filling the shoes of the orevious coaches. “I plan to continue the success that the previous coaches have established here,” he says. Coach Mike Jacot has resigned from the head coach football position, and has been replaced by Coach Harry Welch. Harry Welch has coached at St. Margaret’s High School and Canyon of Canyon Country. He has been the only coach in history to defend two state titles at two different schools. “Some may think that Sants Margarita may not have the talent to compete - I don’t accept that,” he said. “We need to reach our potential with an effort and commitment to foot- ball. We will do this together. I will be there for the players as a coach.” Welch plans to take the football team and push them forward to greater heights. Welch has housed eight CIF championships. In 2007, Welch was named coach of the year by the California Coaches Association, which is out of all coaches including high school, college, and the NFL. We are excited to see what he can do for our Eagle football team. Kevin Ricks, our water polo coach, has resigned from the boys waterpolo program. He has been at Santa Margarita coaching the boys and girls water polo teams for six years. Coach Ricks says he will coach the girl’s water polo team, but will no longer coach the boys program on campus. There will be interviews for a new boy’s water polo coach and once a coach is officlially hired, it will be announced to the public. The past coaches at Santa Margarita have left their individual mark on their teams. To all the past coaches: On behalf of all the Santa Margarita community, thank you for helping us realize why it is always a great day to be an eagle athlete. By Lauren Gardner On December 25 th , 2009, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up Delta Airlines Flight 253 and its 300 passengers over Detroit, Michigan. The so-called “Christmas Bomber” tried to ignite explosives concealed in his underwear. Jasper Schuringa, another passenger, leapt on top of Abdulmutallab and hustled him to the first-class cabin, where he was subdued by the crew. Admulmutallab stated to government officials that he obtained the explosives from an Al-Qaeda terror cell in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. Approximately 200-300 Al-Qaeda members are currently operating there. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attempted attack via the internet just three days after it failed. According to Time magazine, Admulmutallab “should have tripped every alarm in the global aviation-security system put in place after 9/11: He bought a $2,831 ticket for flights from Lagos to Amsterdam to Detroit and paid for it in cash. He left no contact information with the airline. He checked no bags.” His father, a wealthy and reputable Nigerian businessman and the former chairman of Nigeria’s First Bank, reported his son as a potential terror threat to a CIA officer at the U.S. embassy after he became more and more concerned with his son’s sudden religious fervor and “out of character” behavior. So how did he get so close to causing an American catastrophe? The National Counter-Terrorism Center reports that he was placed on a watch list of some 550,000 other potential threats and that “the info on him was not deemed specific enough to pull his visa or put him on the no-fly list.” President Obama declared the incident a “systematic failure,” but others in government seem to be spinning their wheels. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano initially stated that airport security measures failed “in this instance,” but later on the same day was quoted as saying, “The system worked.” The system did work, but only to some extent. Our methods of tracing terror- ists and securing airports certainly needs improvement. The Transportation Security Administration implemented a new “one-hour rule” after the attacks. It declares that airline flight crews may not allow any passenger to leave his or her seat for the last hour of flight. Many airports have also implemented a new machine that performs full-body scans and operates like an X-ray machine. The machine can scan for items concealed in clothes, like the explosives sewn into Admulmutallab’s underwear. People can refuse this scan if they consider it an invasion of privacy, but they still must submit to a full-body pat-down by a TSA official. Technically speaking, the scans are not really that invasive. Brandon Macasta, founder of the Association for Airline Passenger Rights, stated, “I don’t think it’s any different than if you go to the beach and put on a bikini.” However, more can still be done to protect security. I spoke with Captain Paul Nelson, a pilot for American Airlines for 22 years and a police officer for 16 years, about some of the measures the flight Nevada) consider it to be on “life support” and the bill will be passed one way or another. President Barack Obama made health care reform a major topic in his first State of the Union speech. He appealed to the Republicans in Congress to work with Democrats to help them build an improved health care bill that will satisfy Republicans, Catholics, and Moderate Democrats (who all oppose abortion) in the House of Representatives. Abortion is the reason why most Catholics oppose the health care bill in its current form. The USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) says that a health care reform bill that covers abortion in its current state is not the solution that Catholics are looking for. The majority of Catholics favor a universal health care system saying that it would promote the value of human life and dignity. As long as this bill continues to support and cover abortion then the Catholic Bishops will not be endorsing the bill anytime soon. The Democrats in Washington, D.C. have been forced to reconstruct the health care bill to accommodate those who believe in the right-to-life in Congress. The top Democrats that led the surge to pass this bill have vowed that this bill will be passed no matter what the circumstances are. Obama made it clear in his State of the Union address that he needs the help of the Republicans if he is to pass this piece of legislation. Republicans are willing to help as long as their problems with the current bill are resolved. The upcoming months will decide the fate of the health care bill. crew themselves have taken to make the skies more secure. Nelson was vital in passing legislation that gives pilots the right to carry handguns aboard airplanes. He said that just days after the 9/ 11 attacks, he called and wrote letters to Congress, saying “This is the way you need to go about this.” Terrorists effectively used the planes as weapons of mass destruction, he said, and pilots had nothing to defend themselves and their passengers but their own hands. “Those people are willing to die for their cause, their religion, their politics, and that’s something that’s just not understood by the American people,” Nelson said. Therefore, granting pilots the right to arm themselves was a necessary measure. Even California Senator Barbara Boxer, known for opposing guns, recognized that this was “not a gun issue, but a security issue.” Getting the legislature passed began as a grassroots movement, but it quickly gained steam and was passed in Congress. In addition to having the responsibility of getting passengers from A to B safely, pilots now have the responsibility of serving as an in-air counterterrorism force. While federal air marshalls serve a similar purpose, pilots are ultimately the last line of defense before potential terrorists can take over the cockpit. When asked if there were any additional measures the TSA should consider putting into place, Nelson stated that creating a secondary barrier, like an old-fashioned elevator gate, should be put in front of the cockpit. He also stated that having a secondary “flight crew only” entrance would be effective. In addition, he suggested that TSA officers should receive a higher level of training and experience, because if “we can’t stop the stuff [new, never-before-seen explosives], we have to stop the people.” So, is all of this worth it? Actually, yes. If we as a nation want to maintain our ability to travel, this is what we have to do to protect ourselves. As passengers, we should learn a lesson from Jasper Schuringa: we have to stop seeing ourselves as victims, stand up for ourselves and our country, and not be afraid to throw a punch when we have to. “Never accept never,” Nelson says. “If it’s the right thing to do, don’t accept never.” United States Health Care Bill Happenings in Haiti By John Migliaccio The Obama Administration’s health care bill that would be changing the nation’s health care system is now in jeopardy. Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown’s upset victory in the Senate election resulted in the Senate to consist of 41 Republicans, 57 Democrats, and 2 Independents. The two Independents have agreed to vote with the Democrats in favor of passing the health care legislation. Now that a Republican occupies this Massachusetts Senate seat, the Democrats have lost the super majority. This can prevent the minority party from stalling a bill from being voted on. While most people think that this bill for health care reform is dead, the architects of the bill, Nancy Pelosi (Speaker of the House) and Senator Harry Reid (Democrat representative from 2 By Alexia Stamos On January 12th, Haiti was hit with a 7.0 earthquake. This massive earthquake has left a lifetime of devastation and hardship for the small country. The earthquake had the strongest impact just a few miles west of the capital city, Porte-au-Prince. After the initial quake, there were more than 33 aftershocks ranging from 4.2 to 5.9 magnitudes. More than 80 percent of the buildings have collapsed and most of the government buildings at the capital were demolished into broken pieces of concrete and steel. Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. With a population of ten million people, more than three quarters of the population live below the poverty line. After the earthquake, most people did not have homes to return to, so they are living on flat fields in tents made of sheets and sticks. The people of Haiti have begun to rely on day-to-day food aid to make sure that their families are fed. Many are so desperate for food that they steal from one another to keep their families fed. Because of looting, people are forced to stay awake at night to protect their supplies and belongings. When food arrives, riots break out between the Haitians so they can get all the supplies they can for their families. After the quake hit, devastation swept through Haiti. But, the country was already in severe despair. There are expected to be about 200,000 deaths from the earthquake. But that number is rapidly growing. People from all around the world are contributing to aiding those affected by this devastating event. Countries such as Spain, Germany, China, the United States, and many others have contributed millions of dollars to help Haiti. According to CNN, the amount of money that the United States has contributed for relief in Haiti has hit $170 million. This was a truly devastating event. We all need to do our part to contribute to relief. February 2010 Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite! By Caitlin Boyle Has your mom ever told you before you go to bed “Don’t let the bed bugs bite!”? Although most people do not take this literally, there is a chance that bed bugs could be living in your bed. According to kpho.com, there has recently been a 71% increase of bed bugs called cimex lectularius. Bed bugs are not just gross creatures, but they can also be harmful to humans. Thousands of people around the world are affected by their terrible bites and from the skin irritation that they cause. In some cases, allergic reactions can occur. The most common places where bed bugs are found are in hotel rooms and hospitals, but they are also found in houses, businesses, and apartments. Bed bugs are usually found in mattresses or furniture and are not always visible. They are nocturnal, so they wait until nighttime to emerge. It is often difficult to tell if you have these little creatures in your bed. The obvious way of finding out is to check if you have bites on your skin or skin irritation. Another way to check is to look underneath your mattress with a flashlight at night because that is when they come out from hiding. One way A creepy crawler. By Amanda Figueroa Most people assume that drinking coffee is bad for your health, but it has been proven that coffee is far more healthful for our bodies than it is harmful. If it is consumed at the right time and in the right way, coffee actually has many health benefits that can help to improve your quality of life. According to webmd.com, coffee has the potential to lower the risk of type two diabetes, stop headaches, boost mood, and even prevent cavities. These health benefits are a direct result of the high dosage of antioxidants and caffeine that coffee contains. Caffeine can also alleviate the symptoms of asthma and headaches. Surprisingly, a single dose of pain reliever such as Excedrin contains up to 120 milligrams of caffeine—almost exactly the same amount that is in a mug of coffee. It is also the caffeine in coffee that makes it a powerful aid in raising our alertness, helping us concentrate. It is even proven that drinking coffee lowers the risk of depression because it improves one’s mental performance. There are also many other benefits from coffee that have nothing to do with caffeine. It is loaded with antioxidants, which can prevent and slow damage that is done to our bodies. Coffee may not be for everyone, but in reasonable amounts it is definitely doing all coffee lovers a favor for their bodies. The delicious and beneficial drink.. Photo courtesy of Google Images. prevent bed bugs is by washing your sheets weekly. Washing your sheets in hot water will kill the creepy insects. If you stayed at a hotel, make sure you unpack your suitcase far away from any beds or furniture when you come home. Otherwise, you might bring bed bugs into your house and not even know it. Another way to help prevent bed bugs is to keep the area beneath your bed storage free. You can even buy mattress encasements that are specially designed to keep out bed bugs. Although bed bugs do bite, they are not life threatening. Bed bugs are disgusting, but as long as we do things to prevent them, we don’t have to worry about ever coming into contact with them. HEALTH Vitamin Water: Bad Decision! By Alyssa Collica It is a common opinion that water tastes dull and is very boring. The product Vitamin Water has been created as a tasty alternative. It is colorful, delicious, and contains vitamins. What is the downside to drinking it? Vitamin Water is a really bad option. One bottle of Vitamin Water has 32.5 grams of sugar and 125 calories. A 12-ounce Coke has 110 calories and 30 grams of sugar. Vitamin Water has almost the same amount of calories and sugar as Coke! On a Vitamin Water label, the second ingredient is “crystalline fructose.” Crystalline fructose is a type of high fructose corn syrup. One bottle of Vitamin Water has 32 grams of it. Even though Vitamin Water has vitamins in it, it doesn’t make up for all of the sugar and the calories it contains. It is easy to get vitamins in many other forms that don’t have a high amount of calories or sugar. One glass of orange juice has more vitamins in it and is a lot healthier. Coca-Cola is the maker of Vitamin Water. After com- plaints about the amount of calories, the company has created a new and healthier product: Vitamin Water 10, containing only 10 calories. I have tried this new product, but I was not impressed. It has a really bad aftertaste. Vitamin Water 0 has also been released, containing zero calories. Vitamin Water is highly priced empty calories. The healthier and cheaper choice is regular water. So next time you’re at the store and you want to buy a Vitamin Water, think about how bad it is for you and how beneficial water is. The sugary culprit: Vitamin Water. Many girls love getting their nails done for dances, weddings and special events. Getting your nails done may seem harmless but there can be risks that you should watch out for at the salon. It’s not that manicures are dangerous, but there are some tips that you should follow and things you should be familiar with before getting one. Avoid biting your nails. Biting your nails can weaken them. It not only is a bad habit, but it can be harmful to your mouth. Nail biting can also leave the nail open for infections because it might develop a cut or wound. Nail enhancements (acrylics) are bad for your nails! Nail enhancements are often applied by unlicensed workers at unlicensed salons. Our favorite guilty pleasure has come to an end. MTV’s hit show, “Jersey Shore”, will no longer be entertaining us on Thursday nights until further notice. For those who have never seen the show, we are here to give you a brief background of the cast members. First of all, you must know what a “Guido” is. A Guido is a greased up Italian male who spends his days strictly in this order: gym, tanning, and laundry (abbreviated GTL). They have to keep fresh all day long. Ladies, known as guidettes, have one goal in life, which is to find the perfect Guido. Guidettes also spend the majority of their time in tanning beds and picking out the right hair extensions. For one summer, the most eligible guidos and guidettes of the east coast met to live under one house in the beachside city of Seaside Heights on the Jersey Shore. The Guidos of the house were Mike “The Situation”, Vinny, Ronnie, and Pauly D “DJ Pauly D”. Mike referred to himself as “The Situa- tion” because of his proudest body part, his abs. He was the biggest ladies man of the group, always trying to pick up and greased, was the ultimate Guido. Ronnie promised not to fall in love at the Shore, but that changed when he met a special Snookie Hearts Pickles...Not Carrots! By the lovely Laura Schmeltzer. girls everywhere they went. Vinny was the momma’s boy of the house. While still considered a Guido, he kept a low profile as the nice guy, despite his hookup with Mike’s little sis. Ronnie, buffed up, tanned guidette. Pauly D could most easily be defined by his “bulletproof” hair. While Ronnie was in the kitchen, cooking some sausage and peppers, Pauly D spent his time Dj-ing at Bamboo and Karma, local hot spots. Classy would be an understatement. Sammi was the girl Ronnie fell in love with at the Shore. While she originally caught the attention of Mike, she couldn’t handle the situation and found herself running to the buffed up arms of Ronnie. Snookie had a rough summer at the shore. Being a victim of a fight and trying to win the friendship of her roommates, Snookie ended up becoming the most known Guidette on the show. Rumor has it that Snookie and Mike are now an item. J-Woww definitely turned heads every time she walked into a room. From her ripped jeans to her black and blonde extensions, all J-Woww wanted was a good time. Unfortunately, the chaos of the Shore ruined her current relationship back at home, but Pauly D was there to clean up the mess. Angelina was only on the show for two weeks before she fled home. She couldn’t handle the Shore. While the Jersey Shore has ended for now, we can’t wait for the next season. We are all curious as to what drama these Italian Stallions will stir up during the next summer on the Shore. Late Night Battle Royale By Lauren Giudice Last summer, NBC made a drastic change in their late night lineup. In 2004, NBC signed a contract with Conan O’Brien that he would take over as host of the Tonight Show Host in 2009. Conan took over last summer and NBC made a bold move and gave Jay Leno (former Tonight Show host) the 10:00 p.m. time slot for “The Jay Leno Show.” But after seven months of low ratings for O’Brien and four months of weak ratings for Leno, NBC executives decided that a change needed to be made. They planned on pushing the Tonight show back a half an hour and give Jay Leno a half an hour show at 11:30. Conan did not accept this alternative. Conan wrote a public letter that said he would not take that time slot because that would hurt the integrity of “The Tonight Show.” So, negotiations began for O’Brien to depart from NBC. This situation has caused outrage amongst O’Brien’s fans. Jay Leno always had a “nice guy” image, but after this debacle, people have turned against him. In an interview with Oprah, Leno said, “I think it’s unfair, but TV is not fair.” Leno said that the trouble with NBC began in 2004 when he was asked to give up his reign of the “Tonight Show” in 2009. Leno loved “The Tonight Show” and it was difficult for him to give up his dream job. He said he was “devastated” to give it up. In an interview, Leno said, “This is almost the perfect storm, you have two hit shows — ‘Tonight Show’ No. 1, Conan No. 1. — you move them both to another situation, and what are the odds that both would do extremely poorly?” There were high expectations for “The Jay Leno Show.” Time magazine called Leno “the future of television.” But, Leno said, “It all comes down to numbers in show business.” The show only lasted four months because of low ratings and pressure from other stations that were upset with Leno’s prime time slot. However, O’Brien didn’t have the time to even settle into “The Tonight Show” and he had a disadvan- tage from Leno’s time hosting. O’Brien basically had to compete with Jay Leno and David Letterman (CBS). Jay’s perspective is understandable. It was always his dream to host “The Tonight Show” and his ratings were always impressive while hosting. But Jay could have retired or done something else after “The Jay Leno Show” failed. He had the opportunity to do what was right. He had other options than to take “The Tonight Show” back after being the host for seventeen years. Leno responded to these criticisms by saying, “I could’ve done that. But I didn’t. They offered me my old job back, which is the dream job,” Leno said. Jay Leno’s potentially lost “nice guy” persona could affect his ratings in his return to “The Tonight Show.” Leno said, “There’s a lot of damage control to be done. The only way to fix these things is to not be bitter, not be angry or upset, and just trying to do the best show you can.” Things have been tense for long time friends, O’Brien and Leno. Leno told Oprah Winfrey, “I haven’t talked to Conan through all of this. I wanted to pick up the phone, but it doesn’t seem appropriate. Let things cool down, and maybe we’ll talk.” O’Brien, Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel have all taken their shots at Leno and NBC. This is a truly messy situation. About two hundred “Tonight Show” employees will lose their jobs. There was a $40 million dollar severance package for O’Brien and his staff. O’Brien also cannot host another show until September. This situation has truly changed late night television. Lauren Giudice and her mom with the great Jay Leno. By Natalya Kadziauskas If you have ever tasted a Sprinkles cupcake, then you know there is nothing better. Nestled in the Corona Del Mar Plaza south of Fashion Island, Sprinkles Cupcakes is a quaint bakery dedicated to cranking out a variety of mouthwatering cupcakes. From peanut butter chocolate and sweet strawberry to vanilla milk chocolate and cinnamon sugar, it’s no surprise that there is a line bursting out the door of serious epicureans all cupcake crazy. While I work up an appetite for a delicious vanilla cupcake, I crave the story behind the cupcake madness. There’s no one better to share the story of sweet success than Nicole Schwartz, of Sprinkles’ Marketing. How did Sprinkles start, and what was the inspiration for it? Sprinkles is the world’s first cupcake bakery. Since Sprinkles opened in April, 2005, hundreds of cupcake bakeries sprung up nationwide. The idea started when Candace and Charles Nelson (a husband and wife team) decided to Hollywood stars like Blake leave their current jobs as Lively, Katie Holmes, Jake Gyllenhaal and other serious investment bankers to customers alike – all pursue something they cupcake crazy! Red velvet is Sprinkles most popular flavor and definitely what we are known for. But we do offer over 20 different regular flavors and additional 20 seasonal varieties that only come around once a year (i.e. eggnog spice for Christmas, lemon blueberry for 4 th of July, etc). What is your advice for someone who wants to be an entrepreneur? I dare you to dream! When Candace and Charles told people they were opening a cupcake bakery, naysayers said they do your fair share of research to make sure you have a viable business model. What is the best thing about eating cupcakes? The frosting to cake ratio can’t be beat! It’s great to have one cupcake that is portion control. You don’t have to worry about slipping and eating half a pie. With a cupcake, you know what you’re getting into from the beginning. Additionally, there are so many fun ways to eat cupcakes. Some people like to eat the frosting first, others, the cake. Other people take the head of the cupcake, turn it upside down and create a cake/frosting sandwich! As a result of Sprinkles success, the cupcake craze is sweeping the nation. Candace and Charles Nelson started with a dream and created a movement that continues to satisfy our sweet tooth. If you happen to be in Corona Del Mar, stop by Sprinkles, and I guarantee it won’t be the last time. As for the box of vanilla cupcakes before me, I might just settle for one…or two. By Kylie Hargreaves and Meghan Harman Ever since freshman year, we have always heard about how anxious seniors get during their second semester. Back then we did not understand what all the hype was about; but now that we are officially second semester seniors, we understand exactly what our previous seniors were feeling. We asked a random group of seniors what they are looking forward to the most about being second semester seniors. Most of our peers’ answers were the same; they couldn’t wait for the homework to minimize and the fun to begin! Emily Haines said she was looking forward to, “Doing nothing and actually getting away with it.” Brian Thompson said, “not having to care about school.” These are a lot of the thoughts that are going through all of the seniors minds…and it’s true. The Apple iPad is the New iFad! By Steven Gould Apple recently just released a piece of technology that is catching everyone’s attention. It is the iPad, which is almost the same thing as the iTouch, but is bigger and better in everyway. Like the iTouch, the Apple iPad can still be used for email, notes, and photos along with many other features. With the iPad’s 9.7inch LED-backlit display, it is perfect for web browsing, viewing photos, and watching videos. The Apple iPad weighs about 1.5 pounds and only 0.5 inches thick which makes it the perfect size to put in a backpack or purse. This device is perfect for portable web browsing and with its fast 3G network capability, it is faster than ever! The iPad has an upgraded new type of battery and can last up to 10 hours. Also, the performance of the iPad is faster than ever with its new and improved A4 chip. The A4 chip was constructed by Apple engineers and is viewed as the most powerful chip that Apple has built. The many applications on the iPad are preformed at a higher speed and better quality. The iPad has several cool features and applications for the sole engineering of this device. Apple made a new application called iBooks. This allows users to download the latest books with a touch of a button. It is like one of Amazons’ Kindles but it has several other advantages. With the internet availability this is perfect for college students because it can help them buy their books and search the internet for information all in one. College books are extremely expense, but with the iBook app, books can now be bought at a reasonable price. Students can now carry around the 1.5 pound iPad instead of several expense books. The iPad is still capable to use Apple’s 140,000 apps but at a higher speed with more advantages like better quality and sound. The Apple iPad is the best way to experience the web, photos, movies and more. The iPad is loaded with a lot of fun games and downloadable videos, like my favorite (Star Trek). Although the iPad is a lot like the iTouch, some people might like the larger screen and more advanced features. Like any new electronic device, the iPad has many positive and negative attributes. O p t i m i s t i c a l l y, t h e iPad has a great visual display with high speed internet and entertaining applications. If one is into new advanced technology, this is the device for them. 7 SPORTS February 2010 Girls Soccer Wins League Girls Basketball By Dustin Lane By Bailey Turk The girls soccer team has had an amazing season so far. During league finals this past Friday, Joe Bak, Damon Couch, and Jared Fier were named league champions for their weight classes. Cameron Carlberg placed second while injured. John Miller, Matt Pellizon, and Eric Crider placed 3rd. Three of the Junior Varsity wrestlers also placed third at finals. CIF is coming up on February 19th and 20th. The team’s individual rankings have continued to rise in the Orange County polls. According to the Orange County Register, Jared Fier is ranked third in the county for his weight class and both Cameron Carlberg and Damon Couch are ranked second in their weight classes. All three of these wrestlers were invited to the Orange County All-Star Invitational and won their matches against the topranked wrestlers in the county. Damon Couch was also re- cently named the Orange County Register’s wrestling Athlete of the Week. All of the other players on the team have also been working hard and performing well at meets and tournaments. Wrestler Cody Smith said that his favorite part of wrestling is “the feeling you get when you win your match in a dual meet and the ref raises your hand in the air.” The wrestling team has had close to twenty new athletes this year; this is a very large number compared to past years. These new athletes have helped to increase the competition between the wrestlers on the team and bring out their best work ethic. At their dual meet against Mater Dei, all of the team members performed well. Although they fought their hardest, the team still lost by two points. The team has nine seniors who have been working hard all season. Senior Jared Fier expresses that he “will miss the coaches and wrestling with teammates.” Photo courtesy of smhs.org 9 SPECIAL SECTION February 2010 Under 20 Women’s Mexican National Soccer Team By Ashley Kotero Two weeks ago, I found myself five thousands miles away from home, my family, my friends, SMCHS, and our Girls soccer team. I was standing in a tunnel surrounded by many other young women dressed in the official USA and Mexico national team colors. Everyone seemed focused and aware of the fact that both teams had already earned the chance of a lifetime, qualification for the U20 Women’s 2010 World Cup in Germany. I felt like I was on another dimension. My hands were shaking, my heart was racing, and butterflies were rushing through my body! It was a dream… it had to be a dream! I’m only 17 years old and my dream was not suppose to happen for many more years, so I thought! But it seemed so real. How could this be? All of a sudden the music started to play and we all began to march out of the tunnel. As I came out of the tunnel, I saw the crowd in the stadium cheering and that’s when it hit me! It was not a dream, but rather I was living my dream. I then spotted my dad in the crowd and I felt goose bumps as I saw him cheering and looking so proud! This was definitely real! A few seconds later, I was lining up in the middle of a perfectly manicured soccer field, wearing Mexico’s signature green, white, and red uniform and I was singing the Mexican national anthem. Be- against the number one team in the world - USA. We lost one to zero, but we played a great match, and most importantly, we are headed for Germany in July to compete in the World Cup. The accomplishment of qualifying was sponding. I thought that my dream was becoming a nightmare. I was sick and far away from home. My coaches and our medical staff helped me in every way possible to get me into game shape. I never lost an honor of a lifetime. The preparation and the thrill of competing in the highest stage was like a magical rollercoaster ride. Early in the championships, I was ill with an untimely stomach infection and fever. It was frustrating sitting out the first two games. I worked and trained hard in hopes of getting some playing time, but my body was not re- faith, prayed to get healthy again, and through it all I managed to play and start in two matches. God was with me throughout the ups and downs of the tournament. My quick recovery was nothing short of a miracle. They kept me in their prayers and from five thousand miles away I felt their love and support. Coach Morales, Coach Huerta, the SM faculty and staff, SM administration, and my SM soccer teammates were all very supportive. This is what kept me going while I was fighting my infection. I was determined not to give up because I wanted to do my best for Mexico, my family, my friends, my coaches, and more importantly for my SMCHS soccer family. At the end of the championship match I took a moment to stay on the field and hold my medal. My dad was gone by then because he had to catch a flight at the airport right after the game. I walked slowly towards the locker room but stopped before I stepped off the field. I looked up at the sky, holding my medal, and thanked God. I knew that I had tons of people looking out and hoping the best for me. This is the moment that will forever be in my mind, and I thought – it was a great day to be an eagle! The Great “Wall” of Kentucky By Kelsey Hummer By Chanel Collins The 2010 Winter Olympics will be held from February 12-28 in British Columbia, Canada, in three cities: Vancouver, Whistler, and Richmond. There are fifteen events, which include alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsled, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating. There are around two hundred and fifty American athletes competing for Olympic medals this year. In 2006, the games were held in Torino, where the United States placed second overall, totaling twenty five medals. Germany was first with twenty nine medals and Canada was third with twenty four medals. There are some promising American athletes in each of the fifteen events: In alpine skiing, Lindsey Vonn, thought to be the best female American skier of all- 10 time, is America’s best bet for a gold medal. The United States has never won a biathlon medal and are not expecting to this year either. In bobsledding, Steve Holcomb and Shauna Rohbock are the best competitors and are expected to win gold medals. Kikkan Randall is the best female cross-country skier in American history and is hoping to win a medal. The American curling team is not up to par with other countries and is not expected to place very high. In figure skating, Evan Lysacek is the U.S.’ best bet to win a medal, even though the U.S. did not place in this event in the last Olympics. For women’s figure skating, Rachel Flatt and Mirai Nagasu are the forerunners on the U.S. team. Meryl Davis and Charlie White are skating partners who have continuously achieved the best scores going in to the upcoming games. Free style ski- ing is void of any athletes expecting to place in the event. Both the women’s and men’s ice hockey teams are ready to face off Canada for the prestigious gold medal. In luge, Erin Hamlin is the leading athlete competing for Germany’s team. This could be the first year the U.S. places in the Nordic combined with the help of three-time Olympian Billy Demong. In short track speed skating, Apolo Ohno is expected to win a medal for the U.S. team. The American team excels in skeleton, winning more medals than any other country and is expected to do well again this year. It is not likely that the U.S. team will win anything in ski jumping. America is known to have the world’s best snowboarders; this year, the team favorite is Shaun White. On the team for speed skating is Shani Davis, who holds the world record in the 1500m and 1000m distances. Cheer on team USA by watching the talented athletes in the 2010 Winter Olympics! The Kentucky basketball team was recently number one in the entire country, but with a loss against South Carolina on January 26, they dropped back to the 3 rd spot in college basketball rankings. Even with the loss, Kentucky has one of the deepest teams when it comes to skill. With their new freshman John Wall, who is currently ranked as the number one player of college basketball, other teams don’t stand a chance against the Kentucky Wildcats. With Wall, the Wildcats were able to achieve their two thousandth win in school history. Along with this landmark, they also recently became the highest winning program in college basketball h i s t o r y. Throughout the rest of the season, the Wildcats should manage to stay in the top five, and come March they will be back in their number one spot again. The season really started with the firing of the previous head coach Billy Gillispie, and the hiring of John Calipari as their new head coach. The first thing Calipari did as coach was to sign on the new freshman, which included John Wall, Eric Bledsoe, and Demarcus Cousins. These tremendous freshmen, along with their already amazing starting lineup, are very likely to lead the Wildcats to many victories this year. The Wildcats started the year with their best season recorded to date since the mid 60s, with a record of 190. No one can compete with the Wildcats depth and determination. I predict the Wildcats will win the rest of their games and end up number one in all of college basketball. Go Wildcats! FEATURES February 2010 High School Dating ONE OH ONE! Unfortunately, at one point in a relationship there is a little wall we all need to get over. There is always that moment after the first few months where you actually need to know if you really like the person. Re- lationships tend to lose their spark as they go on, becoming almost like a daily routine. At the beginning, each date was exciting and interesting, every absence begins to become a tragedy. As the relationship grows closer, the relationship starts to get laid back. There are three factors to a relationship that can keep the spark going: attention, appreciation, and appearance. In the beginning, loving each other seemed effortless. The guy is anxiously wondering when to send a text to the girl and she is earnestly waiting to recieve the text. Throughout the day, they are both excited to see each other at passing breaks and lunch, or even for that one class they have together. As the relationship begins to grow and become part of your everyday life, you and your partner both start to treat each other as a standard. The boy is texting the girl right after their practice, and she is expecting to receive the text. During school hours, they both meet at the same place everyday. Everything becomes part of their daily life, like a daily routine. Try to bring those Ever Gotten a Detention for Being IN Dress Code?! ting up and taking a shower in the morning you just roll out of bed and go to school. Rather than just getting up in the morning and walking out the door, you should both try to look good for each other, try to impress each other. By impressing each other, your attraction for each other will grow and the spark in the relationship will grow as well. We all find ourselves at this stage of the relationship and sometimes don’t even notice it. As I mentioned before, your relationship becomes part of your daily routine. I am not saying that you lose interest in each other, but instead of letting it become just a routine, add a little excitement and keep the fun going. Make everyday a new day. It’s all about the Tweets By Jennie Whisnant By Breanne Wiekamp Some teachers seem to be giving detentions to students for being in dress code. Have you ever gotten a dress code that is not considered a dress code? For girls, and I hope not guys, headband colors seem to be a problem. In the accessory section it talks about how the only thing that can not be an extreme color is nail polish. I understand why teachers complain about BRIGHT orange or SUPER hot pink, but purple and green should be accepted, and according to the rules it is. Teachers should not be able to give you detentions for this, but they can state their opinion about it. The new dress code for shoes was released in late January over ETV. They have proclaimed that Toms are okay, but moccasins are not. In a way, they are almost the same. Boots are never acceptable; except on certain free dress days. What kind of shoes are we supposed to wear when another storm like the one in January hits again? I guess you should load up on about 7 pairs of socks. Everyone, remember your socks MUST BE VISIBLE. You may be wearing them, but if teachers can not see them, you may end up in detention. Ever gotten a de- fun, exciting moments back into the relationship. Then the relationship won’t just be a daily routine, but will always have a bit of excitement. Now, we all know that at the beginning of the relationship you are both trying to impress each other by doing little things and always saying “thank you” and trying to appreciate everything. Unfortunately, as the relationship goes on, the little things we do for each other become second nature and you don’t realize it. Instead of expecting it and being unappreciative, do those little things for your partner and say “thank you” when they do the little things for you. And of course, we have a tendency to not care about how we look or what we wear. Girls tend to not care what they look like anymore. Boys have page 31 ready, and girls have page 33 handy. It states that solid school color socks must be worn and visible, white is not the only exception. Also, ladies remember that if you are going to wear leggings, they must be navy or white, not black. If you wear an undershirt that is a different color than white, then be sure not to get caught because white is the only acceptable color. Yes I know it is a tad ridiculous. Boys do you like wearing scarves? Guess what? You may wear them, but girls, you may not. Weird, right?! If you are cold, be sure to stop by the book store and buy a SM sweatshirt, or stop by Target and get a plain navy, white, grey, or khaki sweatshirt. Logos are not allowed unless it is an SM logo or a sweatshirt from an SM sport. Unless you want a detention, then I suggest you follow the rules. Also, unless you are a senior, then I suggest you step away from those college sweatshirts because teachers love to give detentions for them. If you ever need a refreshment on the dress code, then you can find the dress code section in the student agenda on pages 29-36. Remember eagles, stay in dress code! Have you ever wondered what Twitter is? For those who are unclear on its meaning, twitter is a social networking tool that allows you to keep up with your friends and family by sending and receiving messages known as “tweets”. Twitter is mainly used for quick updates; therefore there is a 140 character limit for every post. Twitter is continually gaining popularity since May of 2007 when Jack Dorsey came up with the idea. This online blogging system is open to the public and can be used for many different things. Not only is it used for staying in touch with your friends and family, but it is also used for business purposes, traf- fic checks, and provides you the chance to meet your favorite celebrities by posting where they will be sitting at events. Twitter allows communication with a wide variety of people, and provides updated information about current issues and events in the world today. Twitter supplies worldly knowledge and shares the latest gossip and drama that is spilled out into the daily tweets. Though Twitter has become extremely popular throughout the world, it seems as though many still prefer Facebook. Not many people know the difference between twitter and Facebook. The main difference is that Facebook is mostly used for reconnecting with friends and sharing information, while Twitter is used for quick updates and other useful tools. Many people have their own opinion about which is better, but now that you know more about Twitter, maybe you will give it a try! 11 CAMPUS MINISTRY February 2010 A Trip to Haiti An Interview with Beth McCall By Allison Le Tuesdays 6:00 pm On January 12, 2010 a disastrous earthquake struck the struggling nation of Haiti. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and the third poorest country in the world. Healthcare there is very scarce. It is documented that out of every 1,000 babies born, 72 will not live to see their first birthday. The average life expectancy of those that survive the first year is only 53 years of age. The malnutrition rate is 56%. Unfortunately, Haiti’s uneven distribution of wealth does not assist its citizens eitherwith 45% of the country’s wealth being owned by 1% of the population. The earthquake, rated a 7.0 in magnitude, ended 72,000 lives. Countless organizations and charities sprung into to action to aid in Haitian relief. Nevertheless, this crisis is the time for individuals to make a difference and relieve the Haitian community of the burden and loss in their hearts. On January 28, one extraordinary individual that went above and beyond by visiting the nation of Haiti was Santa Margarita’s own sophomore, Beth McCall. In a following interview with Beth, The Blueprint was informed of the details on the preparation, the action, and the experiencebrought back on the return of her trip to Haiti. What are you planning to do when you arrive in Haiti? My dad, my sister, and I were planning on delivering medical supplies to aid in the Haitian recovery centers. Also, while we are down there we are going to visit an orphanage set up by the organization Theo’s Work. Theo’s Work is an orphanage founded by Father Marc Boisvert and it is a nonprofit organization to help the poor of Haiti. Today, the organization’s primary residence is Hope Village or in Creole, Vilaj Espwa. In Hope Village there are over 550 children living there and hundreds more that come to the schools each day from poor neighboring communities. How did you get involved with this trip? My dad owns a private plane and the Red Cross persistently called asking for us to deliver medical supplies but my Dad said, “No” at first because he thought it would not be safe. But then after researching he found an airport in Haiti with plenty of security and said “Yes” without hesitation. Originally, it was only supposed to be my sister Brooke and my Dad. But after I heard about the trip I begged my Mom to go to and she finally said, “Yes!” How are you prepping for this expedition? My sister and I packed very light because we had to have enough room to fit the medical supplies. Also, we have bags of stuffed animals and toys donated by Mrs. Jones, from the History Department for the kids in the orphanage. How was your overall experience lending a helping hand in Haiti? It was a great experience that exposed me to new types of environments that I have never seen before. Meeting the children at the orphanages who have been through so much and yet still have a positive outlook of life, made a lasting impact on me. Beth McCall and her family went further than the average American citizen and flew to Haiti out of the Christian kindness in their hearts. This philanthropy is not one that many Santa Margarita students can execute. Nevertheless, there are so many ways that each and every Santa Margarita student can aid in replenishing the hope of Haiti. Many faculty members have already taken the extra step of donating to the grief-stricken country. For example Mrs. Jones, the history teacher, donated stuffed animals and toys to the kids in the Haitian orphanages. There are countless amounts of ways that we little people can make a big difference. Reach out Santa Margarita; lend the helping hand that the Haitian people need in order to climb out of the rubble. I can’t imagine the terrible pain and suffering they are experiencing. I urge all my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can.” Lindsey Lohan: “The hotel we stayed in is gone. It’s been leveled.
