2 Today ’s Outstanding Students… Tomorrow’s Outstanding Leaders
Letter from the Chairman
Ted LEgasey
Friends of Malden Catholic:
Notwithstanding a stagnant economy, you have again demonstrated your financial support of our beloved school, and it is my sincere privilege
to thank you – the graduates, parents, and friends of MC – for your continued support and for making a positive impact on the school’s ability to
carry out its Mission to develop the spiritual, intellectual, social, creative, physical, and leadership talents of all our students in accordance with
their God-given ability in a Catholic familial atmosphere.
This was a great year for Malden Catholic. Academic performance was outstanding, with our senior class gaining acceptances to an impressive
list of top-notch universities. Performance by student-athletes in both individual and team sports was very notable for a school the size of MC,
particularly in wrestling and hockey. And the entire country learned of the role of community service at MC, when local and national media told
the story of the selfless service of senior Rudy Favard, who of course is but one example of the fine work done routinely by many MC students.
At Malden Catholic we value the fact that our student body comes to us from families that have a wide range of annual incomes. To enable this,
the school makes available about $1.3 million in financial assistance annually – either in the form of scholarships or financial aid. The funding
for this financial assistance comes from three sources: contributions to the annual fund and the annual gala; endowed scholarships; and Bingo.
The great majority comes from the first source and I want you to know that your generous gifts are being well utilized. Indeed, I can think of no
better use than to help deserving young men be able to stay enrolled at Malden Catholic. I urge you to continue, and increase if possible, your
support so that we can sustain the level of financial assistance needed to support our student body and their families.
Malden Catholic is blessed to have outstanding faculty members, dedicated staff, and experienced leadership. The people who hold these positions are committed to Catholic education in general, and to the Xaverian charism and the special nature of Malden Catholic in particular. They
work daily to ensure that the young men who attend MC are being well prepared to become Catholic leaders of the future. I cannot thank them
enough for all they do.
Thank you again for your generosity in supporting Malden Catholic. We absolutely could not make this work without your support.
With warmest regards.
Sincerely,
Ted Legasey ‘63

Headmaster’s Letter

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Malden Catholic High School:
Two words come to mind when thinking about Malden Catholic High
School over the course of this past school year - Plus Ultra. Plus Ultra
is the motto of our school and the words by which our community
identifies itself.
Malden Catholic has a strong and storied legacy. As a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, we daily strive to inspire in our students lives
of learning, faith and service. We seek to educate the whole person
through high academic standards, faith-filled campus ministry, significant relationships, dedication to service and competitive athletics.
Your essential support provides us with the opportunity to answer the
call to share Xaverian values while maintaining ties that run deep with
our alumni and throughout the wider community.
Over the course of this past year, I have had the opportunity to meet
many inspiring alumni and friends. I have listened to their stories and
each one, without hesitation, speaks about the major positive impact
the Brothers and faculty and the entire MC community has had on
them. The recent effort of a group of alumni to formalize the alumni
association has provided me with another experience concerning the
passion and support for the mission and values of Malden Catholic
High School.
In all aspects of school life, our young men have exhibited and
achieved a profound spirit of “Plus Ultra.” In this spirit your support has
enabled our young men to live this motto.
In academics, young men have excelled and achieved in the Brother
Kevin Program, as Saint Francis Xavier Scholars, as members of the National Honor Society, and as Honor Roll achievers. Impressive college
admissions are a testimony to the tremendous difference that your
support makes here at Malden Catholic. Your commitment and dedication have enabled our school to serve a diverse body of students and
to ensure optimal educational outcomes since 1932.
In athletics, the tradition of Championship Teams has continued. The
spirit and the passion for sport that has resulted in year after year of
top rankings and championship achievement realized new heights
this year. We achieved a Super 8, Division 1A State Hockey Championship and placed first and second in the All State Wrestling Tournament,
while providing students with the opportunity to play in a full complement of interscholastic and intramural sports.
As a school rooted in the traditions of the Xaverian Brothers, we are
charged with educating the whole person. Students have been challenged to learn the essential lessons of our faith and have responded
through gifts of service and self sacrifice. Throughout the past year, I
have witnessed how our young men have given faithfully and generously to the needs of our school, and of the wider community. Your
inspiring support enables students to develop the attitudes and the
values which are essential in building a just society and world.
In closing, the 2010 -2011 school year was successful thanks to your
generosity and enthusiasm in support of the young men who attend
Malden Catholic. Much progress was made and we have set the bar
high for the future. In the coming year, with your sustained commitment, we know we can meet and surpass these expectations in our
eightieth year and in our shared tradition of “Plus Ultra.”
Sincerely,
Edward C. Tyrrell
Headmaster

Saint Francis Xavier Society
We are very grateful for the generosity and commitment of the members of the Saint Francis Xavier
Society, people who annually make a gift of $1,000 or more to Malden Catholic High School. These gifts
provide an essential source of funding that can be put to work where it is most needed. SFX Society
members make it possible for Malden Catholic to live its mission of educating young men of character
based on the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers. These inspiring examples of generosity help to motivate
others to reflect on MC’s meaning in their own lives and in the lives of current and future students.
Donors who join the SFX Society and who renew their membership each year make a powerful and lasting
statement about the value of an MC education. For more information contact Carolyn Rolfe, Assistant
Director of Institutional Advancement, at 781-475-5332 or [email protected]

The Ryken Society
We recognize the people who have provided for Malden Catholic in their estate plans with membership in
the Theodore James Ryken Society. Our legacy donors, like the Founder of the Xaverian Brothers, demonstrate a commitment to Catholic education that precedes us and that will follow us long into the future.
Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness.
The simplest legacy gifts are to remember Malden Catholic in your will or to make the School the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Various trusts and annuity vehicles may suit your current needs and help
you to support Malden Catholic in perpetuity. Ask your financial advisor, and know that our Advancement
Department will be happy to assist you.
Our ongoing appreciation for all our legacy donors:

Ryken Profile
the cataldo family
Robert D. and Diana M. Cataldo are the owners of Cataldo Ambulance Service, a fixture on
Boston’s North Shore. They are the parents of Dennis Cataldo, a 1986 graduate of Malden
Catholic and Vice President of the company.
Robert, Diana and Dennis Cataldo 1986
They chose Malden Catholic for their son not only for the strong academic reputation of the
school, but for the familial atmosphere generated by the Xaverian mission of educating the
whole person. During Dennis’ senior year, the Cataldo’s found out first-hand what being a
part of the MC family really means.
Upon return from a ski trip in Austria with the MC team, Dennis had an odd feeling in his neck
while out to dinner with his family. Diana had lost a brother at a very young age to Hodgkin’s
disease and was immediately troubled by her son’s symptoms. The Cataldos swiftly brought
Dennis to the hospital and learned that he, too, had Hodgkin’s disease.
Dennis went through surgery and intense chemotherapy to eradicate the disease. The
support of his parents and the MC family helped him through. Diana credits Father Walsh,
then Chaplain at MC, for making this difficult time a little easier for them. “Each afternoon,
the doors of the elevator would open and there was Father with a group of boys. It was so
encouraging and helpful to us we will never forget it and how much it meant to us.”
“We will always
be thankful for
the education
and support
Dennis received
while at
Malden Catholic”
Dennis is well now and he and his wife Christine are the parents of 8 year-old triplets, all boys.
The Cataldos consider them miracles!
As members of the Ryken Society, the Cataldo family is helping to ensure that the legacy of
the Xaverian Brothers will live on at Malden Catholic.

Senior class gift
Malden Catholic High School students have
a long and rich history of giving back to their
school though the Senior Class Gift. This year the
Class of 2011 chose to purchase a state of the
art podium that was presented to the school
at the Awards Banquet on May 19th and used
at Commencement on May 21st. The podium
was designed and handcrafted by Windsor
Architectural Design of Malden, with the school
seal being handmade by members of the Senior
Class Kyle Amato, Matt Cardarelli and Jung Su
Pak. Led by Student Body President Will Guinee,
the class showed great generosity raising
$1,900 from over 50% of the students.

In addition to the Senior Class Gift, Malden
Catholic kicked off an exciting new initiative –
the Senior Parent Class Gift. For the first time,
parents of the senior class joined their sons’ efforts and left their own lasting legacy to MC by
making gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic.
Over $18,000 in unrestricted gifts were contributed by Class of 2011 parents to honor their
sons as they graduated from MC and to pay
tribute to the school whose faculty and staff
inspired their many accomplishments.
We offer a special thank you to the donors from
the Class of 2011 and to the Senior parents
who participated in this new initiative.

Alumni Profile
Jared Belliveau 1997
Jared Belliveau 1997, a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserves
and 2008 Boston College Law School graduate, came to Malden Catholic in the fall of 1993 from a Malden middle school. When he started
he knew a handful of guys but still felt a little lost his freshman year
because most of his closest friends had not come to MC as he had
hoped they would. It wasn’t until Jared joined the track team, at the
encouragement of Brother Dan Cremin, C.F.X., that he felt he had found
a home. “Being on the track team was one of the formative experiences
of my high school career. I was able to connect with a great group of
Jared and wife Kiley
teammates and classmates with whom I had a lot of fun in a competitive way. We liked to challenge each other both athletically and academically. It was often a game of
one upmanship but it helped me develop into the person I am today.”
Having Brother Cremin, Lou Ruggiero ’66, Bob Quist, and Jerry Bailey ‘89 as coaches taught Jared a lot
about what it was like to be on a team and to feel connected to something that was important to him.
“It was easy to tell when Brother Cremin was excited about something and his excitement was contagious – he always encouraged us to try our hardest and to do our best”.
Jerry Bailey ’89, with whom Jared still keeps in touch, made a particular impact on him as a student.
“After graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Jerry returned to MC as an assistant
coach. This made a big impression on me and motivated me to give back so when the opportunity to
return as an assistant coach for the MC track teams arose, I jumped at the chance. “
Jared understands what it is like to be part of the MC legacy. He volunteers within the MC community
for activities like the Legacy Room at the Open House. As a donor, he understands the mission of the
school and shows his support by attending the Celebration for Malden Catholic each spring and by
making leadership gifts to the Saint Francis Xavier Society. When asked why he thinks it is important to
make gifts at this level to the Fund for Malden Catholic, Jared explained “The reason why I like to stay
involved and give something back is that I never want to take for granted all the opportunities I had as
a result of my Malden Catholic experience. As an alum, I now realize how unique the school is from an
educational standpoint and from a community standpoint. It is important for the students who come
after me to be able to receive that same experience.”

Alumni Profile
chris denapoli 2010
Originally from Stoneham, Chris DeNapoli 2010 is a second year student
at Stonehill College, double majoring in Accounting and Criminology
with plans to become a Certified Public Accountant. Chris knew as an
8th grader that he wanted to go to a school where he would be challenged academically, and most importantly where he could practice his
faith. After attending a Malden Catholic open house, he knew that MC
would be the best Catholic private high school for him, realizing that
MC “was a high school that encouraged students to use one’s gifts and
to work toward achieving one’s goals.”
At MC, Chris was involved in a number of activities including freshman soccer, swimming, track, XBSS,
MCLI, Lancers in Action, Best Buddies, Student Council, the Multicultural Club, and the Science Club.
“I knew that it was very important to get involved in activities, not only to meet fellow students, but
also to perform service to those in the community. As a member and president of Best Buddies, I was
given many opportunities to involve myself in service with young people who have Down’s Syndrome
and other types of intellectual disabilities. My life has been enriched by the experience of being part of
Best Buddies. Currently, I am still a member through the chapter at Stonehill College.”
Even though Chris is currently away at college, he still keeps in touch with several friends from MC. “We
always make an effort to get together over our semester breaks from college and during the summer.
There is something about the brotherhood at Malden Catholic that is unique. When I meet somebody
affiliated with MC, we always have a lot in common no matter what the age difference is. There is a
special bond that we share as Lancers.”
The experiences Chris had at MC have had a tremendous impact on him, helping him understand how
important it is to support the school. “I will always donate to this fine institution because I want other
young men to be given the same opportunity that I had to grow academically and spiritually. As a
Malden Catholic alum, making a donation is one way I can say thank you to the exceptional faculty and
staff for giving me the foundation needed to embark on my personal goals.”
“My Xaverian education is priceless!”

Alumni Profile
Michael Fitzgerald 2006
After being red shirted for his sophomore football season at MIT due to
an injury, Mike Fitzgerald ’06 decided that he would stay at MIT to take a
few graduate courses and to play football for one last season. “I figured I’d
never get the chance to go back and play that one last season. I felt it was
important to take the opportunity to enjoy the time with my teammates
and coaches, and in hindsight, it was the right move. I was able to enjoy
one last season at MIT and even got the chance to play in the D3 Senior
Classic down in Salem, Virginia.” While playing and studying, Mike was also
looking toward his future deciding between opportunities for jobs from
Mike and former Coach Joe Gaff
some pretty impressive employers. “I thought I might end up with the Celtics, since I had interned with them
during my junior year, but being in school that last semester, I was able to wait and see what else may be out
there, and another opportunity presented itself.”
After graduating in the winter of 2011, Mike accepted a position with ESPN as part of their new Technology
Innovation Team. Mike describes his department as “One third think tank, one third entrepreneurs, and one
third die hard sports fans heavily focused on the external audience— how to make the ESPN experience, for
the fan, more enjoyable and more in-depth.”
“Some of my strongest MC memories revolve around my involvement as a member of the football and track
teams.” Mike describes his time spent at Malden Catholic as being very community orientated with a strong
fraternal feeling both on and off the field. “It is difficult to be an outsider at MC; there are way too many opportunities to become part of the community. I think you have to make an effort to be on the outside.”
Mike still firmly believes in the fraternal feeling of the MC community and has made a conscious effort to
keep himself connected to what is happening at the school. “It is easier to do it now and to build those good
habits than waiting and trying to give back later. “ As a young alum, he also believes it is important to have
a presence at the school and to serve as a mentor for the MC students. Mike remembers looking out at the
crowd at an SFX dinner where he was making a speech and thinking that there weren’t many people from
earlier decades supporting the school. Now he is determined to engage his classmates and other young
alumni to help fill that void by participating in such things as the Malden Catholic Alumni Association
Steering Committee, attending and donating Celtic playoff tickets to the 5th Annual Celebration for Malden
Catholic, assisting at MCLI, and speaking at Career Day. Through his ongoing support of Malden Catholic as a
young alumnus, Mike continues to live the school’s motto of Plus Ultra every day and serves as an inspiration
to the members of the younger classes.

Alumni Profile
Joe McCarthy 2005
Joseph McCarthy 2005 is currently a Congressional Aide
for Congressman Ed Markey
1964. He is responsible for
assisting constituents regarding their concerns with
banking, housing, energy and
environmental issues. Joe
has always had an interest in
public service and believes strongly in the obligations we all
share in helping others. He wants to make a career out of being an active and productive member of the community. Joe
has tried to carry out the lessons and examples of leadership
he acquired over four years at Malden Catholic. Joe explains, “I
am fortunate to be exposed to the inner workings of government, because it allows me to learn more about the public
and private sectors, and maintain a fresh, grounded perspective on how national legislation impacts the communities I
grew up in.”
Looking back on his experiences at Malden Catholic, Joe feels
that “when you commit yourself to a Catholic education, developing a more acute interest in the community around you
is inevitable.” The school’s motto “Plus Ultra” instills an idealistic ambition in people and is something that Joe carried with
him to Boston College and into his career in government. Joe
believes that he wouldn’t be the person he is today without
the lessons he learned at Malden Catholic. “Without obtaining the full MC experience through academics, extracurricular
activities and athletics, without living through the successes,
challenges, wins and losses, I wouldn’t be as aware of the
value of each individual’s contribution. It has helped me do
my job.”
Being an active participant in the community is nothing new
for Joe. At Malden Catholic, he was Captain of the basketball
and track teams, and played football. He wrote a column for
the Crystal 99 school newspaper, and perhaps as a prelude to
his future position, participated in Model Congress and was
elected Student Council President. Being so involved with
the diverse activities MC offered, gave him a “sense of what
it means to be part of a team. You learn invaluable lessons
about people’s capacity to meet challenges when confronted
with adversity. These are lessons that you take with you
beyond Crystal Street.” More so, his involvement exposed him
to working with a diverse group of people and personalities;
these experiences are integral to serving the constituents of
the 7th district.
Joe gives back to the Fund for Malden Catholic because he
wants the Blue and Gold tradition to continue so that other
young men have the opportunity to grow into service oriented leaders of tomorrow. Joe believes that it is important to
help sustain the education that Malden Catholic provides and
that “today, when so many families may be feeling the pinch,
it is more important than ever to continue giving so that many
more generations will have the opportunity to attend MC.”
Recently, Joe had the opportunity to walk around the old site
of MC on Highland Avenue with Congressman Ed Markey.
Congressman Markey explained to Joe how that building, but
more importantly, the people who occupied it set the foundation for the institution Malden Catholic is today.
Today ’s Outstanding Students… Tomorrow’s Outstanding Leaders 17
ways to give
Thanks to generous individuals like you,
Malden Catholic continually improves the
opportunities offered to the young men
who will lead tomorrow.
Your gift today makes an immediate impact
on students by providing financial aid,
co-curricular opportunities, and curricular
strength.
If you wish to mail a gift, please address it to:
Office of Institutional Advancement
Malden Catholic High School
99 Crystal Street
Malden, MA 02148
Checks may be made payable to:
Malden Catholic High School
To make a gift using your Visa, MasterCard, or
American Express, donate securely online
at www.maldencatholic.org or contact

Matching Gifts
Don’t forget to ask your employer about matching
gifts! You can maximize your personal contributions to the school and increase the impact of
your gift by taking advantage of your company’s
matching gift benefit. Check with your human
resources or payroll department for details.
A Gift of Securities or Real Estate
By making a gift of securities or real estate you
benefit in two ways: first, by receiving a charitable
income tax deduction, and second, by avoiding
capital gains taxes that would otherwise be due
on the appreciated property. For stock transfer instructions, please contact the Director of Business
Operations at 781.475.5329.
Planned Giving
Planned gifts allow you to provide for Malden
Catholic while realizing your own financial and
estate planning goals. Many planned giving
methods benefit the donor as well as the school,
by reducing or eliminating income, gift, and
estate taxes. For more information on Planned
Giving, please contact the Advancement Office at
781.475.5334.
Memorial Gifts
A gift in memory of someone you love or admire
can be a particularly meaningful way to contribute
to Malden Catholic High School. Upon a special
occasion or the loss of a family member or friend,
many choose to create a restricted scholarship or
an endowed scholarship in their memory.
Gifts In Kind
Non-cash gifts of property such as computers,
books, scientific equipment, art materials also
make important gifts. The fair market value of such
items is deductible for income tax purposes. A
formal appraisal is required by the IRS for gifts in
kind valued at over $5,000.

Gifts from
parents are an
important and
special source
of funding
for Malden
Catholic
When a parent makes a gift, he or
she shows personal support of the
Xaverian mission and traditions
of the school, as well as the
generations of MC mothers and fathers who sacrificed to provide an education for their sons in
the “Catholic, familial atmosphere” that makes us Malden Catholic. This additional investment in
their student’s education is also a vote of confidence in the administrators, the teachers, the staff
and the Xaverian Brothers who work together to educate and nurture Malden Catholic students.
Parent contributions are applied to the school’s operating budget and help to bridge the gap
between tuition and the actual cost of an MC education. Gifts also support acquisitions for the
library, enhancements to athletic programs, advances in information technology, the purchase of
scientific and technological equipment, renovations—and, of course, financial aid.
Last year, gifts from parents ranged from $10 to $10,000. Tuition alone has never fully funded
our faculty salaries, campus maintenance, extra-curricular activities and all that makes the MC
experience unique. It is support from parents that consistently helps Malden Catholic create
competitive programs that contribute to the excellence of an MC education.
Thank you to all those who participated in the Fund for Malden Catholic this year.

Student Profile
John ronayne 2012
John Ronayne, class of 2012, was eager to start his senior year at Malden
Catholic this fall. Although he wasn’t 100% sure what to expect, he knew
that senior year is a time to “prove myself as a leader within the school community and be someone who the underclassmen could really look up to.”
It was not that long ago that John arrived at MC as a freshman. At that time,
he admits that he may not have known too much about the school aside
from that it was private and Catholic, and that it was all boys. As his freshman year began, he realized just how much a Malden Catholic education
had to offer. John quickly became an active member of the MC community
by joining Lancers in Action, the soccer and track teams, the Robotics Club
and by developing interests in programs like photography and music.
In addition to immersing himself in the MC community, John has stayed
very active in his parish, St. Patrick’s of Stoneham, and completed a mission
trip to Peru in the summer of 2010. “We built a chapel in two weeks from
the ground up. We visited many local towns whose members of the community were underprivileged or poverty stricken. We handed out rosary
beads, helped out with the children learning centers, and prayed and
worshiped together.”
At MC, John has also been very involved with Campus Ministry. It is an activity that he plans to stay involved with even after graduating from Malden
Catholic this spring. “Campus Ministry is definitely something that I won’t
walk away from. The education that MC and the Campus Ministry program
has given me is something for which I am grateful. I look forward to the
future when I have the chance to give something back. I am sure that what
I have learned academically and morally while here at MC is something
that I will carry with me in the future.” As a result of his hard work and his
dedication to service, John was awarded the Cardinal’s Award of Excellence
from the Archdiocese of Boston this past spring. The Cardinal’s Award is
presented by Cardinal Sean O’Malley to a high school student who demonstrates his or her faith by serving as a faithful and active parishioner in the
local community.
Upon graduation from MC, John will enter the United States Navy having
already enlisted this past summer. He knows that his unique experiences
here at school have prepared him for this next big challenge. “Malden
Catholic is different than any other school. There is a large focus on leadership and the school motto, ‘Plus Ultra’, is something that I will bring with me
into the Navy. The idea of going ‘More Beyond’ is in everything I do. Being at
MC, I have learned that if you go beyond what you are asked to do, people
will always notice. ‘Plus Ultra’ makes me want to go further than what I think
I am capable of… to try new things, to be a leader, to get to know people
who I may not otherwise interact with. “
John is one example of the high caliber student who attends Malden
Catholic. It is John, and the hundreds of other students who attend MC,
who benefit from gifts made to the Fund for Malden Catholic each year.
Gifts from alumni, parents and friends, working together, make a tremendous impact on today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. John is very
grateful for the experiences he has had at Malden Catholic. He knows that it
is because of the generous financial support of the alumni who have come
before him that he has been able to reach his fullest potential. “Whenever
I wear my MC shirt, I always run into a smiling face. Alumni will see me and
we just start talking about our school and that is really special.” Looking to
his future, John knows that the brotherhood of Malden Catholic will follow
him throughout his life, just as it has here at MC.

Staff Profile
John nott
After being a teacher in Industrial Arts for twenty years, John Nott was excited to apply for another a school-centered position at Malden Catholic eight years ago. Now, as
a member of the MC community for the past eight years, John’s official title is “Brothers’
Housekeeper” but what he does for the school is so much more. John acts as a mentor to
the work study students each summer, attends sporting events like hockey and football
games, and is a loyal donor. After his father, Lawrence, passed away four years ago, John
and his mother, Marguerite, saw an opportunity to make a meaningful gift in his father’s
memory and created the Lawrence Nott Scholarship.
When asked why he chose to support MC, John explained that he has always been
amazed by the friendliness and kindness of the MC community, especially the Xaverian
Brothers. “They are the greatest people I have ever met in my life. Getting to know them
has been an awesome experience”. In addition to his relationship with the Brothers, John
has also been impressed by what Malden Catholic does to educate students in the
Xaverian tradition and believes that it is important to give all deserving young men the
opportunity to attend MC.
“They (Xaverian
Brothers) are the
greatest people I have
ever met in my life.
Getting to know them
has been an awesome
experience”.
By attending the scholarship breakfast each year, both he and his mother have had the
chance to meet the students and families that have benefitted from the Lawrence Nott
Scholarship. “Although it is only a small amount in comparison to the tuition here at MC,
they {the students and families} are so grateful for our help.”
Making a difference in the lives of Malden Catholic students is most important to John,
and he looks forward to continuing his support each year.

24 Today ’s Outstanding Students… Tomorrow’s Outstanding Leaders
Girls Catholic High School Profile
DEANNA CHARVES
Education is expensive, but a Catholic education is priceless. The value
lies in the forming of the whole student into an intelligent, caring and
compassionate leader. In this increasingly secular and materialistic
world, it is no wonder parents seek the best education for their child…
no matter the cost.
My primary motivation for establishing a scholarship to honor my
brother has had an enormous benefit for me, that is, the ability to
meet and put a face on the individual who is the recipient of the scholarship. Our last recipient, Rick Serino ‘10, was an amazing young man
who, in addition to having a full academic schedule here at Malden
Catholic, was pursuing his induction as an Eagle Scout. He and his
family kindly invited my husband and me to share in this special event.
I attended Girls Catholic High School for 2-½ years, starting in the
middle of my sophomore year. It was not an easy transition for a teenager from Vermont, but I was quickly taken under the wings of Marion
Hopkins Hurst. We remained friends until her untimely death over
twenty years ago. Although we had moved to Malden because of my
father’s job, he passed away later the same year.
My husband and I met on a trip to the Orient. We have had the privilege of touring many countries throughout the world. On one recent
trip we spent two weeks on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was a
profound experience to walk in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus.
My faith has always been a major part of my life. It was challenged in
2004 when my small Franciscan church was part of the archdiocesan
reconfiguration, but that did not stop us. We picked up our faith and
brought it to a wonderful small parish in Northborough which has
a thriving elementary school. I have been involved with assisting
the school’s Advancement Director. The children are beautiful, well
grounded and respectful. This experience has certainly enhanced
my appreciation for a good Catholic education. It is a cause for envy
though as I surely wish I had been born in the time of technology.
These children are so good at it, and it would be a plus for me as I videotape, edit and burn our Sunday Masses for the local access channel.
Although my husband and I were never blessed with children of our
own, I get a sense that it was God’s plan for us to help others get a
good, solid Catholic education. Donating and giving back has become
a part of the fabric of my life. It is indeed a privilege.
With the realization that I would not now have the time or money to
attend college, I spent a year at Katherine Gibbs where I could quickly
gain some marketable skills. My last position was as executive secretary to the president of what was then Massachusetts Electric (now
National Grid). I am now very happily retired, but that does not mean
that I have retired from life.

Endowed Scholarships
When you endow a scholarship, you ensure that students of Malden Catholic
will have the financial aid they need for many generations. Perhaps you will
choose to endow scholarships in memory or in honor of a loved one, adding
another level of meaning to the kind of education you believe in. Endowed
scholarships, established with a minimum gift of $10,000, are invested and pay
out an established percentage of income per year in financial aid; and you may
increase the size of the corpus at any time. Thank you to all of you who have
chosen this way to make a Malden Catholic education possible for the young
men of the future.

Restricted Scholarship Funds
You can choose to make a gift of scholarship aid on a year-to-year basis.
These restricted gifts, also often made in honor or memory of a loved one,
are paid out in full each year to young men who need financial support in
order to attend Malden Catholic. Yearly giving by those who have
established these funds makes continuing help possible. Thank you for your
generosity.

Office of institutional
advancement
The Office of Institutional Advancement is dedicated to securing financial
support for Malden Catholic’s many programs and initiatives. It is our
goal to effectively partner with alumni, parents, grandparents, friends,
foundations, corporations, faculty and staff so we can further our mission
and help to develop educated young men of character and caring.
We know that charitable gifts are essential to securing a healthy
financial future for the school. Our office manages several giving
programs including the Fund for Malden Catholic, Major Gifts, Endowed
Scholarships, the Ryken Society, and Corporate and Foundation giving.
Money raised through these programs goes towards financial assistance
to students, competitive salaries for faculty and staff, innovative
technology in the classrooms, new athletic equipment for sports teams,
valuable resources in our library and exciting ways to engage with our
alumni. We thank all of you for your generosity.
We invite you to learn more about the ways you can partner with the
Office of Institutional Advancement by contacting Robert McCarthy,
Director of Institutional Advancement at 781-475-5333 or at
