What are some ways this might change the way you and your family live? The Southside Times Indianapolis Public Library sees architect's concept drawing for Southport Branch, forms planning committee on Beech Grove merger FEATURE By Nicole Davis After seeking and hearing public feedback, Southside libraries are a step closer to changing the way they look and operate. The Indianapolis Public Library held its monthly board meeting on Aug. 24, approving the formation of a Merger Planning Committee with the Beech Grove Public Library and getting to see a concept drawing from arcDESIGN of a Southport Branch redesign. Beech Grove updates The BGPL board of trustees approved the Merger Planning Committee in its meeting earlier this month. Indianapolis committee members will be Dorothy Crenshaw, Dr. David Wantz and Laura Johnson. A plan will be completed no later than a year from Aug. 24, when it can be presented to the board for consideration. “We look forward to sitting down with Indianapolis and seeing where this leads,” said Elizabeth Schoettle, director of BGPL, at the meeting. the entry; group study rooms; teen area; community room moved to the west side of the building; multiple service points to support computers; relocation of the outside book drop and more. The project budget is $1,305,825, with construction expected to begin after the New Year. “We’ve seen this a couple times and it’s pretty exciting,” said Dr. David Wantz, the board of trustees’ vice president. “As a person who lives in this area, it’s really exciting.” The final public forum is Sept. 1, 7 p.m. at the Southport branch, 2630 E. Stop 11 Rd., Indianapolis. The public is invited to give their input as arcDESIGN presents this concept drawing. “The next public forum we will have an opportunity to further vet these ideas, followed by the Sept. 15 facilities committee where we’ll present the last round right before we go to ask for authorization to bid,” Rush said. “We’re moving fast but it’s moving very smoothly.” Southport updates The Southport Branch has hosted two public forums with arcDESIGN, an architecture, interior design and planning company. In the first public forum, participants discussed what they love about the library, areas of unmet needs, concerns and hopes and goals for the branch. At the second meeting, arcDESIGN presented two design options to get Rick Rush speaking at the Southport library during the first public forum more feedback and see with arcDESIGN. Photo by Nicole Davis how to move forward. “The general layout is pretty close,” said Rick Rush, of arcDESIGN. “As far as the final look, we’re not quite there yet. We have an understanding of the needs of the community now.” Proposed changes to the library include relocating the entrance to the north side of the building, Artist rendering of a new Southport library entrance. Top ten recent denials and deniers While walking down Shelby St. in Fountain Square last week, it didn’t take long to see groups of people riding bright yellow bikes around town. These individuals were taking part in the Indiana Pacers Bikeshare program, getting a view unique view of the city. Seeing the smiles on these people’s faces will make you want to hop on one of the bicycles, too. So it came as no surprise when we were scrolling through the social media and saw a post from the Garfield Park Neighbors Association, stating “If you'd like to see the Indiana Pacers Bikeshare come to "The bikeshare program already has 250 bikes at 26 stations around Indianapolis." Garfield Park or in an area nearby the park, our neighborhoods and community - LIKE THIS POST! We are reaching out to be added in the near future! Where do you believe is the best location for a bikeshare program?” The bikeshare program already has 250 bikes at 26 stations around Indianapolis. It looks like they’re interested in continuing to grow. We’d certainly be interested in seeing how well-received a program like this would be further into the Southside, in the areas with sidewalks and amenities to support the program safely. It is a healthy alternative to driving short distances around town – Indiana Pacers Bikeshare shared on their Facebook page participants burned a total of one million calories in the first 18 days of August. What are your thoughts? Read more about the program at pacersbikeshare.org or visit the Garfield Park page referenced at facebook.com/garfieldparkneighborsassociation. 5 By Torry Stiles 10. It teaches you that things aren’t always as bad as they seem. It’s been a good place. It’s something I’m proud of and something my family is proud of.” What was your inspiration to become a police officer? I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do out of high school. Being around the police department and police officers, I started to gravitate towards that. I got sworn in at 21. What has been one of your most gratifying moments on the job? Probably the most gratifying recently is going to and graduating from IMPD Leadership Academy. I never attended college and it was one of the biggest regrets of my life. The Leadership Academy is college-based, you write papers... At the end of it, the class votes on the class spokesperson. I was nominated by my class to be the spokesperson for my graduation ceremony. Being recognized by my peers was pretty gratifying. What aspect of the job do you find most challenging? This job is different than any of the others I’ve done. One of the challenges is the learning curve. The administrative side of it is different. It’s challenging as a patrolman sitting in the position as an executive officer when normally it’s a lieutenant. Making sure that everyone that has a rank above you respects the things that I say and do as a patrolman. It’s challenging in that aspect making sure I live up to my expectations and the expectations the commander has for me. It’s rewarding at the same time because I do see that mutual respect. What do you enjoy doing in your off-time? I coach football with the Center Grove freshman team at the high school. I have a lot of family time. We do a lot of camping, fishing and being around my family and friends. What are your future goals, professionally or personally? Professionally we have a promotion process in place now so I’ve been preparing for that, to get promoted from patrolman to Sargent. I don’t want any rank before that, with about 11 years before I retire. Personally, I have three sons. I spend a lot of time with family. I just want to continue to be the father and husband I’ve been and strive to be better. What would you have done if you hadn't of became a police officer? If I hadn’t taken a liking to the police side, I would of went to school for teaching. I always thought that’s what I wanted to do. That would coincide with the coaching that I do. Their sweet faces and personalities are something many owners take pride in, often sharing stories of something cute or funny their sweet or sassy dog or cat did. To celebrate the lesserknown family members, The Southside Times asked readers to send their best photos of their pet, choosing the top three to be featured on this week’s cover. We were pleased with the response– with more submissions than last year. An overwhelming theme this year from those who submitted a little extra information on their pet seemed to be stories of rescue. It was great to hear about Southside residents taking an abandoned dog or cat and giving them a loving home, and how the animal warmed up to the family: “Meet my sweet little Casey,” wrote Tina O’Gara, 3 -1 Pages 7 Compiled by Nicole Davis 7 who serves as a foster parent for Chihuahuas. "Her age is unknown but somewhere around 8 or more. She is a rescue found in Texas on the streets as a stray.... She is only 4 1/2 pounds. She has detachment disorder and cries like a human baby when I leave.” “Introducing WC!” wrote Alisha Caudill & Aaron Gilbert in their submission. “He belonged to our Mom, Katherine. She rescued WC in 2008 and she passed away in 2010. My brother & I continue to share responsibilities, to care for WC, while honoring our Mom. Our SWEET "Dubs" is always willing to offer his paw, in exchange for affection and a brushing!!” We’d like to thank everyone who submitted photographs, as can be viewed inside and on our Facebook page. COMMUNITY The Southside Times ss-times.com • Week of August 27 – September 2, 2015 17 Imagining a better Perry Township Vision and planning luncheon draws community leaders in brainstorming session FEATURE By Nicole Davis Community leaders from business owners to high school students and officials, politicians and government entities joined together on Aug. 26 for Positively Perry’s Imagining a Better Perry Township Vision and Planning Luncheon at Resurrection Lutheran Church. The group voted on ideas of how to enhance the Southside area, proposed new ideas and were given the option to volunteer for a committee that would work to make those ideas a reality. Last year was the first time that the Greater Southside Business Alliance, Positively Perry, hosted a vision and planning meeting. Through ideas that were discussed, task forces were formed around strengthening Southside branding and identity, increasing business development and support, intentional cultural integration, creating a community for a lifetime, redevelopment of Madison Avenue and advocacy and communication. Those task forces have done things such as organize the first Perry Cultural Festival and working with local government entities on redevelopment of the Southside. In the Aug. 26 meeting, ideas that have not been fully achieved since last year were voted on, to see if interest still remained. Participants voted for things such as bringing in a unique coffee/art shop to the Southside, create an initiative to promote local women-owned business, create a leadership training program for young business leaders, create a map highlighting distinctive Southside locations and businesses, advocate for more sidewalks along Southside streets and more. Participants voted that they were not interested in working to eliminate/discourage the proliferation of used car lots or using billboards to promote the Southside. New ideas this year included focusing on art in the community with more public art; incorporating more local bookstores; promoting the Southside in other areas of the city; music festival; having high school students do a day of service; more things for pastime; promote urban forestry programs that teach people how to take care of the Your Dream Home Awaits in Stone Pointe Kevin Wheeler presents ideas that came up in last year’s meeting. Call 300-8782 20 LIFESTYLE Week of August 27 – September 2, 2015 • ss-times.com Speeding in the soapbox Greenwood ‘Warped Wall Warrior’ team to compete in Cincinnati Red Bull Soapbox FEATURE By Nicole Davis When Greenwood resident Bill Westrick saw an ad for the Red Bull Soapbox while researching Spartan races online a few months ago, he couldn’t help buck click on it and fill out an application. He was sent a longer application, filled it out, and got a call four weeks later saying he was in. Bill and his team, Warped Wall Warriors, will race their soapbox car in Cincinnati on Aug. 29, and Bill is confident that they’ll do well. “I feel like a winner,” Bill said. “They might as well put my name on the trophy right now. I’m as confident as I can be. There are some unknown factors like we’ve never tested it down a hill. But I’ve raced my whole life and I’m confident about my skills on that.” Warped Wall Warriors’ theme for the competition is a take on the television program, American Ninja Warriors, where contestants try to overcome a challenging obstacle course. Bill has been a contestant on the show twice. The team includes Bill’s wife Monica, friend Danny Owens, Crissey Owens and coworker Michael Moorman. Bill will race the car with Danny in the backseat. The team had approximately eight weeks to build the soapbox. “I started from scratch, built the frame, some seats, the whole steering mechanism,” Bill said. “We took it to my house and tested it several times in my own neighborhood, by gravity and being pulled by my own truck.” The initial finished product was 176 pounds. The competition has a 110 pound weight limit so they had to take it apart and get rid of unnecessary things such as seats, support bars, and used an alternate metal in the brakes. It’s now 105 pounds. Bill says that he looks forward to this weekend race, and how the soapbox performs. The Southside Times Food addiction and mood NUTRITION By Chef Wendell Fowler You know the rare feeling? Spending your day clear headed, confident, full of energy and feel-good; like you could conquer the world or at least clean out the garage. You could feel that groovy energy frequently if you eat more from the Celestial Apothecary and less life-sucking processed sugar and fat oozing from machine cuisine. Do you eat sugary, fatty foods by swan diving into the comfort foods when you get the blues or just aren’t feeling it? Is your kryptonite Mom’s home baked goodies, holidays, church pitch-ins, birthday’s, weddings, office peer pressure, state or county fairs or sporting events. Or is it emotional stress eating? Know why it’s so challenging to stop? America’s taste buds and brains have been hijacked by sugar and fat addiction. Sugar is a powerful, additive, mood altering drug that triggers mood swings. Fats, particularly those high in saturated fat are linked to both depression and dementia. A large, fatty meal will almost instantly renders you sluggish. It takes a lot of energy to digest fat. The book “Eat Your Way to Happiness “explains the link between food and mood, your energy, how you sleep, and how you think is real. What you eat or don't eat for breakfast will have at least a subtle effect by mid-after- noon and what you're eating all day will have a huge impact today and down the road." Sugar spikes blood sugar which leads to a run-down feeling while your temple struggles to bring blood sugar levels back down. After the zoom, crash and burn, much like a street drug, you need more. In his book “The End of Overeating”, Dr. David Kessler, retired director of FDA explains sugar and fat hit your brain like crack cocaine stimulating your temple to synthesize Dopamine-the feel-good drug. Aha! A Scientific American essay, “Addicted to Fat: Overeating May Alter the Brain as Much as Hard Drugs,” mentions rats given access to high-fat foods showed some of the same characteristics as animals hooked on cocaine or heroin--and found it hard to quit even after electric shocks. A survey by the Food and Mood Project found people reported better moods when they limited sugar and fat. Adopting a healthy plant based diet is about feeling great, having more energy, avoiding disease, improving your outlook, energy levels, and stabilizing your mood, because it’s in the food. In the 6th Edition of the Harbrace College Handbook, it says – when periods or commas are used with quotation marks, the periods or commas should be inside the quotation marks. I wrote to Alex Trebek years ago and he answered as follows: Our editorial associate producer is the product of an English education and he seems to favor a more "logical" approach to this matter. With this comment he included some pages of the English 2nd edition of the Harper Dictionary of Contemporary Usage. It says that printers in the U.S. chose our version because of the looks of the page and empty spaces, but the English version makes more sense. What do you think? A: So, what is “logical” punctuation? To keep it simple, the difference between the British “logical” punctuation system and our American system boils down to two punctuation marks: the period and the comma. In American punctuation, commas and periods always go inside of quotation marks, with very few exceptions (The Slate article notes computer code as the most common one). In “logical” punctuation, commas and periods are either placed inside or outside of quotation marks depending upon whether they are considered to be a part of the quoted material. How about an example? As I can think of no one more appropriate to quote than the oft-quoted Mark Twain – one of my favorite authors, incidentally – I’ll let him chime in about writing. “Writing is easy,” Twain once wrote, “All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.” Notice that here the comma and period are placed within the quotation marks, as prescribed by American punctuation rules. Now, if we slipped the same sentence past the copy editor in British style, it would look like this: “Writing is easy”, Twain once wrote, “All you have to do is cross out the wrong words”. In British, or “logical,” punctuation, the comma and period would go outside of the quotation marks since they are not part of the original quote. Since Jeopardy is filmed in Los Angeles, and every American style book and English teacher you could care to consult would recommend American punctuation, I would say that yes, Trudy, Trebek’s commas and periods should fall squarely within his punctuation marks. NIGHT & DAY The Southside Times American Ultra… a bloody and entertaining good time MOVIE REVIEW By Adam Staten Action films are some of the most popular and profitable movies Hollywood produces. The latest Mission Impossible has come in number one at the box office multiple weekends. And this fall, the newest film in the continuing saga of suave, sophisticated British spy, James Bond, hits theaters. As much as action films seem to be universally adored, other movies that poke fun or combine action with other elements also seem to do well. Action-comedies like Pineapple Express, the 21 Jump Street films, and this summer’s Spy all found an audience and went on to rake in the big bucks. Another film hoping to carry on that trend is the new movie, American Ultra, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. American Ultra is the story of two slacker potheads (Eisenberg & Stewart) who quickly find themselves the target of a covert government operation. One evening, while manning the desolate and deserted convenience store, Mike (Eisenberg) encounters an odd woman who spouts off seemingly nonsense. Unbeknownst to him, that nonsense is a code that unlocks deadly capabilities in Mike. He quickly becomes a killing machine, creatively taking down each and every person threatening his life with bloody results. Mike has absolutely no clue as to how he BEHIND BARS Strawberry Walk With Me Bartender: Luke Schneider Location: La Margarita, 1043 Virginia Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46203 Ingredients and directions: 1 ½ oz El Buho Mezcal, 1 ½ oz Strawberry Nectar, 1 oz Lime Juice, and ¾ oz Lemon Simple. Garnish with an Orange Wheel. acquired these lethal abilities. He soon begins questioning everything he knows. What he finds out is that everyone and everything is not what they seem. As far as the story goes, it can be pretty well described as a Bourne film, but with more blood and a lot more pot. There are a few other differences, but for the most part that’s what we’ve got here. It is not the best or most interesting story in the world. It’s really not the most original tale in the world either; the whole thing is fairly predictable. Eisenberg, as the habitually stoned night store convenience clerk, who is actually a highly trained government assassin, is very, very good. His performance and spot-on comedic timing helps keep American Ultra fresh and entertaining anytime interest in the film or story begins to wane. He may be playing a character we’ve seen him do a number of times prior, but he’s so good and funny here that you really won’t mind. In the end, American Ultra really is a Jason Bourne film with dark humor, more blood, and pot. It is predictable, but it’s also immensely entertaining and isn’t that really the point anyway? 3 out of 5 Adam Staten lives in Perry Township and is a movie buff. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." ~ Galatians 6:9-10 By Paul Kirby Work, work, work! There are times that I am so tired. Then, when it seems that there is time to relax, even for a little while, the phone rings or there is a knock on the door and, guess what, more work to be done. I am not complaining, I am just saying. Those that are true pastors know that his or her time is spent in study for sermon preparation and for teaching assignments and visitations and counseling. To that man or woman Paul writes, "Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." It is not so much the labor, it is the failure to reap that discourages a pastor and causes them to "faint" away. The second part of this is verse ten. Think deeply about what Paul is saying to the pastors and the workers of the church. As we are given the opportunity to do good to all people, and especially to those who are people of faith, take those opportunities with gladness. This is the work that God has assigned to us and we should do it as the ministry of Christ. We do it all for the Lord and for His glory and so that His name is constantly kept before the community. So, it is worth it all after all. I love to pastor and I love to be there for those who really have a need for me to be there sharing Christ with them. It is a blessing to just be there to see how God works in ways unimaginable and marvelous. My best advice to every Christian is, get involved like Jesus was involved. You will be blessed. God bless and go and have a great day. Paul A. Kirby is the pastor at the Church of God at 3939 S.
