Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to
enriching the daily lives of children undergoing
treatment for cancer and blood related diseases.
Our mission is to be an advocate for these
special kids and provide them and their
families with the recreational, educational, and
emotional support needed throughout the long
hours of chemotherapy illness and isolation.

Dear Friends,
In 2012 we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Friends of Kids with Cancer! We enjoyed a wonderfully successful year
and are proud to present our 2012 Annual Report.
We would like to share a little history with you…The first program that Friends of Kids with Cancer offered was the
‘Big Shelf ’…a special place where the kids could select a ‘gift of their choice’ after their treatment. There were a few
volunteers who would shop and keep the shelves filled with a limited budget. That acorn of a project has grown to a
mighty oak tree in just 20 years!
The charity is now supported by more than 350 active volunteers who are dedicated to serve the more than 1,000
children and their families. Your tremendously generous support, along with our fundraisers and other third party
events help generate the $1.1 million budget we use toward our Educational, Emotional, and Recreational Programs.
As we continue to grow and serve more children, our success is largely due to your important contributions, for which
we owe many thanks.
Our Educational Programs provide tutoring and testing assistance to help the child stay focused, confident and on
grade level. Another Educational Program is a scholarship program for cancer survivors. The Emotional Programs
provide creative options to ease the burden placed on both these special kids and their families. The Recreational
Programs are the cornerstone of our organization and provide never-ending smiles and memories for the kids, their
siblings and parents.
We are most grateful for your continued support…friendship…and dedication to the children who we serve! We thank
you for your devotion to our mission to provide the best possible services to the children and we remain dedicated to

educational, emotional, and recreational programs. We don’t just give away toys or candy to sick children; we engage minds,

Education, school and critical thinking are vital aspects to a child’s growth and development, both
mentally and socially. Our team of Educational Specialists facilitate those missing elements while
battling the longterm cognitive effects of cancer treatment on the child’s learning ability.

Our recreational programs are the cornerstone of our organization. We are able to provide toys, entertainment,
gifts, tickets, and many other things in hopes of brightening a patient’s day. Most importantly, we provide smiles
and memories for the kids, their siblings and parents to take from one day to the next.
Provided special gifts & gift cards to
more than 325 kids in treatment in 2012.
Gifts totalling more than $102,000.
Provided over $43,000 worth of tickets
to Rams, Blues, Cardinals, the Fox,
the Muny and concerts for kids and their
families
Provided those extra special things
that create smiles and irreplaceable
memories, totaling more than
$12,000 in 2012.
Our inaugural program in 1992
provided each treatment center
we serve with a closet full of toys
on-site. Kids battling cancer and
their siblings get a break from their
treatment...and smile!
Provided funding for Family Parties
such as Magic House, Halloween Party,
Winter Wonderland, two Family Nights
at Busch Stadium, a trip to the St. Louis
Zoo and Build-A-Bear party.
Sponsored by The Bill and Amy
Koman Foundation, Friends was able
to spend $31,000 just to make our
families smile.
Provided lunches, snacks and
goodies to families at the treatment
centers once a week.
Relapse is a word that no one
ever wants to hear. We try to
help kids forget about it. There
were 42 Ian Kyles awarded in
2012, totaling $21,000!
Provided funding for the “musthaves” for the long hours spent
at the treatment centers: DVD
players, computers, recliners,
movies, games, cds, and much
more!
In memory of Maddie Bayer, this
special fund is designated to
send the immediate families of
patients to musical productions.
Our Best Friends
The “Friends” office is comprised of
a very small staff and we rely heavily
on the help of our many wonderful
volunteers. It seems there is no job
too big or too small for our Best
Friends. We cannot say thank
you enough to all of our regular
volunteers, committee members,
Board Members, and of course the
doctors, nurses and staff at all of
the cancer centers for making our

Dear Friends of Kids with Cancer,
I just wanted to thank your
organization for all that you do to help
families affected by childhood cancer. My son
recently had to have a bone marrow transplant
while battling a relapsing brain tumor. You’ve
been there with us, showing support from the very
beginning (providing toys while he went through
radiation, gift cards, Christmas parties, snacks in
the bone marrow unit, etc.). I just wanted to
let you know that my family and I really
appreciate all that you do.

20 years strong!
Friends of Kids with Cancer celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2012! In 1992 we started
stocking toy closets and since then we’ve grown both in programs, volunteers and the
amount of children we are able to serve. We’d like to take a quick stroll down memory lane
