Highlights include a bounty of critically acclaimed films ranging from brutal survival tale The Revenant (15) to thrilling sci-fi road movie Mad Max: Fury Road (15) and cold war drama Bridge of Spies (15). We are marking International Women’s Day with an archive screening of Make More Noise! The Suffragettes in Film (U). There’s also the opportunity to enjoy the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s, thanks to Friends of Number 8 who voted to see it on the big screen. We are looking forward to welcoming naturalist and BBC presenter Iolo Williams to Number 8 with his show Welsh Rarebit. The ever-popular Pasadena Roof Orchestra will be Puttin’ on the Ritz! and Badapple Theatre Company will be performing their play The Thankful Village. The Orchestra of the Swan concert series Mozart, His Friends, Admirers & Rivals continues. Meanwhile little Mozart fans can enjoy the ingenious show The Very Magic Flute. In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey - The Walking Dead, State of Play) is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Friday 11 March - 7.30pm Pre-concert talk: 6.45pm Tickets: £14.50 1hr 40mins (inc interval) Spartacus Recorded at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow In ancient Rome, Spartacus, a Thracian soldier, is captured by Crassus with his wife Phrygia. Forced to fight as a gladiator and kill one of his friends, Spartacus plots an uprising. Grigorovich's Spartacus was created at the Bolshoi in 1968, and has since remained the Russian company’s signature ballet. This most spectacular production is an epic tour de force, giving full expression to the strength for which the Bolshoi’s male dancers are renowned. Principal dancer Mikhail Lobukhin is stunning in the role of the legendary gladiator, alongside Svetlana Zakharova as Aegina. Join us as she travels to Oz and beyond and meet the friends and enemies she encounters on her journey. This event is a Private Hire organised by Cropthorne with Charlton School. Wednesday 16 March - 1.30pm; Thursday 17 March - 7.00pm Tickets: £8, 16 & under £5 1hr 30mins (inc interval) Boris Godunov Live from the Royal Opera House, London Richard Jones and Antonio Pappano renew their creative collaboration with this new production of Musorgsky’s historical masterpiece, here seen in its compact 1869 first version of seven scenes. Bryn Terfel takes the lead, with John Graham-Hall appearing as the crafty Prince Shuisky and John Tomlinson as the vagabond monk Varlaam. The originality of the composer’s vision of Pushkin’s play about Tsar Boris Godunov - who reigned over Russia between 1598 and 1605 - was too much for the Imperial Theatres, who demanded changes that were incorporated in the second version of the opera. Many commentators prefer the integrity of the original format, which makes few concessions to operatic conventions. Nesbit book, this breath-taking show tells the story of siblings Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, whose lives change dramatically when their father is mysteriously taken away. Moving with their mother from London to a cottage in Yorkshire, they befriend railway porter Perks, and embark on a journey of discovery, friendship and adventure. But the mystery remains - where is Father, and is he ever coming back? As a master of his craft, he follows the grain of the adventure through many exciting twists and turns, carving out a perfectly shaped entertainment. In his highly skilled hands the story of a puppet boy who struggles through difficulties to do ‘the right thing’ is both fast moving and funny. A delightful family treat that is sure to leave you smiling. Suitable for ages 4+ and their grown ups. Clive Chandler is one of a very few full time professional puppeteers in England and has built a reputation for high quality performances. Along the way he meets Kitri, the dazzling daughter of an innkeeper, who he thinks might be his ideal love. The Bolshoi’s panache and excellence are combined in Fadeyechev’s critically acclaimed staging of this exhilarating ballet with Leon Minkus’ famous score. Featuring brand new sets and costumes to accompany this colourful and technically challenging production, Don Quixote is quintessential Bolshoi, abounding with life and not to be missed! Sunday 10 April - 4.00pm Tickets: £15, 16 & under £10 3hrs 10mins (inc interval) Exhibition on Screen Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse Recorded at the Royal Academy of Arts, London & the Cleveland Museum of Art Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art but he was not alone. Artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative exhibition from The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Royal Academy, London. From the exhibition walls to the beauty of artists’ gardens like Monet’s Giverny, we take a magical journey to discover how artists used the modern garden to explore radical and wonderful new ideas. On the way we meet disco-dancing black grouse, the Lamborghini of the bird world, Britain's largest spider and a sexchanging fish. Iolo is Wales' best-known naturalist and his witty, enthusiastic and friendly style is sure to please nature enthusiasts of all ages. With a Q&A session where Iolo will answer audience questions. Iolo has presented more than 25 TV series and has appeared on Visions of Snowdonia, Birdman, Countryfile and Nature's Top 40. He recently completed Tir Cymru a landmark series on the landscape of Wales for S4C. After five encores and forty minutes of applause, audiences were still left wanting more. The legendary concert is now available for the world to enjoy in this new film. The quiet village backwater of Bottledale is changed forever by the advent of the Great War in Europe. As the years pass, the roll of honour stone in the village square remains empty and un-etched and folk start to wonder. Written by Kate Bramley with music by Jez Lowe. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love, it inspires Scarlett to explore the very depths of human nature and our need to find acceptance and a place in the world. For this exciting new ballet Scarlett returns to the music of Lowell Liebermann from whom he has commissioned a brand new score. Thanks to historical music and theatre greats such as Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini, and contemporary arts directors including Franco Zeffirelli and Patrice Chéreau, Teatro Alla Scala has upheld its position as a world-class theatre throughout the years. The film leads us through the main historical, musical, social and political events in La Scala’s 238-year history. Since 1969 the Pasadena Roof Orchestra has been faithfully re-creating the popular music from the 20s and 30s. This show features the timeless classics that lifted spirits during the depression era, and made household names of singers such as Bing Crosby, Al Bowlly and Fred Astaire. The musicians master the arrangements and sound of the fabled American orchestras of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson and the great British dance bands. Presenting the show, and putting on the top hat white tie and tails, is the suave singer and band leader Duncan Galloway. So pack up your troubles, come on get happy, and revel in an evening of superb live music, with more than a dash of wit and humor.
