A warm welcome to everyone including new Members of BBC to a new 2016/17 season.
Trust everyone has rested up over the winter break and are ready for a great
season. Things haven’t been quiet at BBC over the past few months. The new
Committee has continued fine-tuning the Club House, building on the great
work of the past few years, focused on giving Members a better experience.
Carol just loves being BBC’s Secretary. Keep a look-out for those Weekly
Emails (WRAPs).
Roy has produced an awesome Winter
Social season. It’s been over 2mths with no
one winning the Wheel, the Jackpot is at
record levels. Read more from Roy inside

The new team of Selectors have been busy and are keen to see everyone maximise their potential on the
Greens. They have arranged formal Coaching clinics. This is a great opportunity for new and experienced
Bowlers to improve their Game. Read more inside.
As the 15/16 Season was concluding, Bowls SA in their limitless wisdom decided to change the structure of the
Pennant Competition. Where the Blackwood teams will play this season is detailed on the following pages.

11.30am on 3rd Sept. prior to the first Trial game on that day.

Blackwood Bowling Club (BBC) is
concentrating on recruiting new
members for the 2016/17 season.
Your committee is considering
various strategies to carry this
forward.
One such strategy is that any new
people to lawn bowls who join the
club this year as a full member will
not be required to pay fees nor buy a
playing shirt.
Your committee is of the firm belief
that the task of recruiting new
members should not be the sole
responsibility of the committee but of
all members.
BBC is endeavoring to recruit at
least 10 new members. This number
is needed to ensure that we continue
to field the same number of Pennant
Teams as we did last season.
We have approximately 100
members and if 1 in 10 of you can
find a new member we will have
achieved our objective.
Please consider sharing this
responsibility so we can reach our
objective.
Your recruit may be a neighbor,
friend, relative or member of a group
or club that you are associated with.
You are encouraged to bring your
recruit to the club to enjoy a game of
Social Bowls or simply a roll up.
This is a challenging area for all
sporting Clubs but an area vital for
the future of BBC.
Your help is needed. By working
together, your help will make a big
difference. The Committee has invited you to help.
Already during early Aug, BBC has held promotional stands at various Blackwood shopping sites. So far 4
potentials have shown real interest. 4 may not sound a big deal, but every individual new member is vital.
If you want to help talk to one of the above Committee members. It would be great to have you involved.

The 2016/17 Pennant Season
Bowls SA has made changes to the structure of Pennants which has
impacted BBC sides.
In summary the changes are:
and it’s clear as mud …
Premier is still called Premier – 10 sides
Major League North and South are now Division 1 and 2 - each with 10 sides.
Metro 1 is now Division 3,
with 2 sections of North & South each with 10 sides
Metro 2 is now Division 4,
with 4 sections North, South, East, West each with 10 sides
Metro 3 is now Division 5,
with 4 sections North, South, East, West each with 10 sides
Metro 4 is now Division 6,
with as many as required with 10-12 sides per section
Metro 5 is now Division 7,
with Match and Program to determine sections and numbers based on the number
of club nominations
So what does this mean for BBC?
WEDNESDAY –
BBC’s Metro 2 side will now be in Division 3 – 16 players per side
BBC’s Metro 3 side will now be in Division 5 – 12 players per side
BBC Division 2 side could play finals as the Premier to Division 3 leagues will play a top 4 finals series.
NOTE: Wednesday games will now commence 1 hour earlier.
THURSDAY – Ladies Pennants
BBC’s Metro 1 will now be in Division 3 – 12 players per side
No finals for BBC as only Premier to Division 2 will play a top 4 finals series.
SATURDAY –
BBC’s Major League South side relegated and will play in Division 3 – 16 players per side
BBC’s Metro 2 side relegated and will now play in Division 5 – 16 players per side
BBC’s Metro 3 side relegated and will now play in Division 7 – 12 players per side
BBC’s Metro 5 side will play in Division 7 – 12 players per side
BBC Division 3 side could play in the finals as Premier to Division 4 leagues will play a top 4 finals series.
PLEASE NOTE: Although the regular home and away rounds will be completed by early March, Teams in
Wednesday Division 2 or 3 and Saturday Division 3 that make the top 4 finals series WILL see their season
ending late March.

Playing Pennants this Year?
To enable the Selectors to manage our teams this season, we are asking you to try to
make a commitment in advance. This will enable us to call on fill-in volunteers to hopefully
enter an entire team for each match. Please endeavour to play as often as possible.
There will be occurrences when having indicated your availability you may not be available
- that's OK. We just need to manage our teams more efficiently.
Last season we were at times very short of players at short notice - we are trying to avoid
this situation this season.

Beyond the call of duty. The lengths Karen goes to for the club.
No, Karen isn’t gassing herself but she does feel like doing it sometimes during
function preparations.
This was the recent end of season kitchen clean up.
To all Blackwood Bowls Club Bar or intending Bar Staff
I have organised a trip to Coopers Brewery at noon on Thursday 22nd September with
the primary aim of being shown how to pour the perfect beer. This is being combined
with a tour and tasting of some of the Coopers range of beverages. The tour is an extra
and usually cost $25 per person which is donated to a charity but as the main focus will be on developing our
pouring skills there will be no cost.
Whilst this email invites members to attend the tour it is primarily aimed at those bowlers who serve
behind the bar or those who would be prepared to assist with bar duties.
Initial discussions have indicated that the tour usually starts at noon culminating in a few sample drinks whilst
being shown how to pour the perfect beer.
Only people who intend to work behind the bar are invited and by doing this trip you are saying you wish to
assist behind the bar.

Coaching Clinics
None of us are too experienced or inexperienced, or too young or too old to learn. While the first session has
already happened, it’s not too late to attend. See Neil.
Neil has arranged for the SA State Women’s coach, Lynton Modra, to conduct a series of coaching clinics on
the last two Sundays of August and the four Sundays in September between 10 and 11.30 am.

Session 1: Sunday 21st August. (approx. 2hrs)
This session will cover the following:
> Back to basic fundamentals (step / aiming line / weight control)
> Mat routine (prior delivery / delivery / post-delivery )
> On green group exercise to demonstrate the need of a sound routine
> On green group exercise to evaluate alternative methods of the delivery
Session 2: Sunday 28th August. (approx. 2hrs)
This session will cover the following:
> The importance of "TEAM WORK''
> Role of a player within a rink (Lead / Second /Third / Skip)
> Importance of a game plan
> Team Work exercise
> Game exercise
Session 3: Sunday 4th September. (approx. 2hrs)
This session will cover the following:
> On green drill exercise for a ( Lead / Second
/ Third / Skip )
> 40 bowl drill
Session 4: Sunday 11th September. (approx. 2hrs)
This session will cover the following:
> Availability to video your delivery
> On green game exercise
Session 5: Sunday 25th September. (approx. 2hrs)
This session will cover the following:
> Review player’s delivery video
> On green game exercise
> Hand out exercise sheets
> Review all sessions and answer questions

Coaching Clinics
Session 1 held on Sunday 21st August was attended by a healthy number of Bowlers all wanting to improve
their game.
This first Session covered the basics, (step / aiming line / weight control)
• The Pre-Delivery discipline,
• Using the Mat, deciding on your Line, understanding the different Lines
• On the Mat routine, being consistent, Getting a rhythm
• The Post-delivery routine
• Exercises were conducted demonstrating the need of a sound routine and evaluating alternative methods of
the delivery
For those that attended you now need to practice, practice and practice.

Remember, for those that did not attend but would like to attend the remaining Sessions lead by Lynton, you
are very welcomed. 10am on Sunday. See you there.
A huge Congratulations to the hard working Ladies (and a couple of blokes) of BBC who put together a
Breakfast prior to this first coaching session. The food was great and enjoyed by all.

JACKPOT SOCIAL PAIRS

Firstly I would like to thank all the members who continued to run the Jackpot Social Pairs while I was absent.
In particular Mick Trevaskis, David Williams & Rodger Polgreen and all the bowling green helpers, well
done guys.
We continue to get very good support for both our Wednesday & Saturday Jackpot Social Pairs.
On Wednesdays we have had a total of 94 players consisting of
61 members & 33 Visitors
The player who has won the most games so far is Paul Mesecke with Lewis Ash a close second.
On Saturdays we have had a total of 97 players consisting of
73 members & 24 Visitors.
The player who has won the most games so far is Trevor Cox with Lewis Ash a close second.
Recently we had our highest attendance for Wednesdays & Saturdays being 46 Players!
The Jackpot Wheel has reached the highest amount since it was introduced and has reached $550.00. Who
knows who will be the lucky winners.
Just a reminder the last Saturday Social Bowls will be 27th August,
last Wednesday will be 31st August & the first Monday will be 5th September.
Monday Jackpot Social Pairs will continue until the end of the Pennant Season.

Our Greens have enjoyed the wet Winter.
Change in rules in regard to A Measure.
If you are playing Third this season, then please take note.
If the Measure is conducted by a Measurer and not the Umpire of the day,
their decision can be challenged.
If a challenge is to be made you are to inform the Measurer and they will
request the Umpire of the day to conduct the measure and their decision
is final.
In order for there to be a challenge, no longer will the person conducting the measure move the shot bowl.

Measurers (Accredited)
(Extract from BBC Email to Members 19/08/2016)
Bowls SA would like to advise of change of duties for accredited measurers.
Background:
The duties of the measurer have never been defined in the laws of the sport, the issue was raised that as the umpire
having the final decision (Law 43.2.9), the duties of a measurer could be final. Given that the duties of the measurer have
never been defined in the laws of the sport this issue needed to be resolved.
Action:
The goal from NOAG is to have the duties of the measurer written into the Laws of the Sport, but this needs to be done
through World Bowls – or alternatively they provide us the opportunity to make changes to the Domestic Regulations.
Failing that, the NOAG has resolved to put the duties of the measurer as an appendix in the law book. In the interim,
NOAG has determined that the duties of a measurer are to be put out as a memo as any changes to the Laws of the
Sport cannot be considered by World Bowls until they are again reviewed (2018). The duties of a measurer must reflect
the Laws of the Sport.
As from 1 March 2016, the duties of a measurer within Australia will be defined as follows:
DUTIES of a MEASURER:
A measurer must be accredited and undertakes identical training as all accredited national umpires and as such is able to
demonstrate their competency by carrying out the following required duties:
-
Measure any disputed shot or shots using suitable measuring equipment, such as that described in law 54
Must decide whether the distance of the mat from the rear end and front ditches and the distance of the jack or
bowl from the mat line are in line with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls or not.
Must decide whether a jack or bowl is in play or not.
A player can call for an umpire if they not satisfied with the measurer’s decision.
However, if there is no umpire present at a game but an accredited national measurer is, then the measurer becomes the
appointed competent player to be the umpire for that day.
The umpire’s decision is final.
A measurer must not offer advice or any interpretation of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls unless they have been appointed
as the Umpire.
How measurers conduct themselves during games can have significant influence on the way in which games are
conducted and the atmosphere that prevails. (as at 1 March 2016)
The clarification of the role of an accredited measurer will be integrated as necessary into training materials which will
include the next edition of the Officiating Manual and any relevant questions as part of the reaccreditation process.
COMMUNICATING THE RESULTS OF A MEASURE
The measurer and/or umpire should always make a decision when called. A tied end is a decision. Having measured, the
measurer should only indicate the shot bowl/s without moving it or any other bowls as the player/s may wish to call an
umpire for confirmation. The umpire’s decision being final. If the player/s is not wanting to call the umpire, the measurer
should then turn out the shot bowl(s) telling the players the decision. If two bowls are equidistant from the jack, both bowls
should be turned out together. Advise the players verbally of the decision e.g. ‘1 Shot to red’ or ‘Tied shot. No score’.
Having turned out the shot bowl(s) nothing else in the head should be moved by the measurer or umpire as this may lead
to confusion amongst spectators and players as to the outcome of the measure.
After a measurer or umpire has communicated their decision to the players, the players need to prepare for the following
end without comment on the decision. A good measurer or umpire would refrain from responding to any comments made
by players or spectators.

A well known skip was having a hard time from the other three in his team who had
failed to contribute anything throughout the game.
At the last end the third walked down to the mat to play his first bowl and pausing,
shouted back up the rink. "Where's the nearest bowl?".
"In your ******* hand!", answered the skip.
