DID YOU KNOW
The stewardesses in ABC’s drama Pan
Am are fictional, but the scene of
young women in neatly matching
blue uniforms gliding confidently
through an airport, as enthralled
travelers – and more than one
handsome pilot – stand back and give
way. is absolutely true, according to
BARBARA BRAUNSTEIN KATZ
(Fairway Landings) who brought
glamour and serious service to the
international skies.
A lot of former stewardesses joined
the airlines to leave their everyday
existence and see the world. Barbara
Barbara Braunstein flew with Pan Am in the late 1960s.
Braunstein had already gotten a taste
of that world, leaving her small New Jersey town for college in Maryland and then a year of study in
Madrid. Now, she just wanted to see more. And Pan Am was her ticket. “When I graduated from
college, I didn’t have a boyfriend, and I wasn’t getting married. Women of my generation, that’s what
we did,” she says. “But I wanted to travel.”
by Maureen Schreiber, Dir. of
Membership
She found herself fitting quite well into Pan Am’s image of international jet-set chic. “Oh, it was the most
glamorous. This was the Jackie Kennedy era, with the pill box hat, the white gloves, the spike heels,” she
remembers. “Mostly everyone dressed up who came on the plane.”
Dear Members,
And Pan Am’s standards ensured that its flight attendants matched its vision of sophistication.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful
holiday season with their families and
want to wish you all a happy and healthy new year. I also
want to let you know about two different items pertaining
to membership, one of which has recently changed.
RENTAL POLICY: The club enacted previously a one-year
rule for rentals with transfer of club privileges, and this
policy went into effect December 1, 2010. After review
by both the Membership Committee and Board of
Governors, this policy has been extended to two years
retroactive to December 1, 2010.
“We had to weigh in before every flight, and go into the office with the grooming supervisors and twirl
around to check that we had no runs in our stockings,” Braunstein says. “Our hair couldn’t touch our
collars, and we couldn’t have tinted hair and only certain kinds of makeup.”
Glamour may have been key, but once the flight started, the spiked heels were replaced with more
sensible ones and the work began.
“During first-class service, we served a three-course dinner! We served filet mignon, and cooked the
steaks right on board! We did Cherries Jubilee, although we couldn’t flame it.”
As fancy as it seems, Braunstein says that the most important thing for people to remember is that “it
wasn’t all glamour. It was hard work. We were on very long, tiring flights. The flight from New York to
Uruguay was 12 hours nonstop.
EXPERIENCE THE OLD COURSE: There are still
opportunities for members to try the Old Course for three
months just by paying the dues difference for that period
– no equity and no Old Course assessments. It’s a great
way to try all that the Old Course has to offer.
After flying for a year and a half, Braunstein became a stewardess trainer for Pan Am. She’s now a
motivational speaker, and believes that her work in the air provided her with a confidence that’s carried
over.

LINDA BAUMANN (Fairway Pointe) was caught by surprise when
vice chairman Neil Haynie presented her with a plaque for her
stint as president of the Federation of Boca Raton Homeowner
Associations. She’ll remain on the executive board.
Condolences
Baumann serves on the city’s Community Appearance Board, and
Mayor Susan Whelchel had kind words and proclamations for A.
Grant Thornbrough, longtime chairman and CAB member Juan
Caycedo. They stepped off the board after a combined 41 years of
service.
Our condolences to the families of Harold Adler,
Rafael Aronson, Shirley Feinstein, Steve Joffe,
Howard Schubert, Sam Sisisky and Alice Stein
“The way the city looks and feels is credited to all the board
members, and we cannot even begin to thank you enough,”
Whelchel told them at the Dec. 13 City Council meeting.

My best wishes for a happy
and healthy new year; filled
with prosperity and all your
dreams becoming reality.
As I look back over the last year
I am proud of the accomplishments that we have made at
the Club. Our new strategic
plan has aided our Club in attracting 16 Associate
Members and allowed an additional 17 members
to join our newly developed Senior Category.
We opened our new card room in June with Lt
Governor Jennifer Carroll participating in the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Our members are overwhelmingly enjoying this new facility. Friday night
dancing on our new outdoor terrace has been a
huge hit with members burning the midnight oil.
Our dining facilities have reached new levels of
sales and our “burger n brew” nights have exceeded all expectations. Mr. Crean and his wonderful staff never cease to amaze us with their creativity and performance in this area and they are
to be commended for a great year.
Never resting on its laurels, your Board of Governors began working on our next and final construction Phase as the card room was being com-
pleted. Plans were reviewed, researched and put
to paper after meeting with consultants and visiting many other spas and fitness facilities.
Our architects took our work and visions and with
their expertise created sets of preliminary plans for
review. Not to bore you with the details, the culmination of all this work resulted in the 18 presentations made to over 800 members who participated
in our Member Informational Meetings regarding
our final phase of construction. Suggestions were
made by our membership and incorporated into
our plans and the brochure that you received in
early December.
While this work was going on, we met with and
interviewed several Banks. Our needs and plans
were discussed and reviewed and resulted in the
exceptional financing term sheet presented to us
by Wells Fargo.
As this is being written the ballots were mailed to
our members (with a snafu occurring on the preaddressed envelopes that was dealt with). Now we,
along with you, await the outcome of the voting.
By the time you read this column we will all know
the results. I really hope that you, the membership
of our Club, have supported the Board in approving our phase 2 plans.
New Honors for John Crean
Broken Sound’s General Manager recently earned the
designation of Certified Chief Executive in addition to his
other honors. This designation recognizes Managers who
have shown the ability to successfully serve as the most
senior level manager in the club industry. In addition, he
was also admitted to the CMAA’s extremely prestigious
Honor Society, a designation reserved only for those who
have proven to be true leaders of the club management
field. True to Crean tradition he is one of the youngest
ever to achieve these high honors. Club President, Ivan
Snyder, presented Mr. Crean with these awards at our
Member-Member party in November.
New Year’s Eve has now passed and we are in Ccontinued on pg. 5)

Corner

Director
A few years back, we were
asked by Mr. Crean to deliver
a wireless point of sale screen
for the wait staff to use during
lunch, both to expedite the ordering procedures
and to also eliminate some of the paper process.
While there was a system available, we quickly
realized that the hand-held PDA used with this
system needed much more screen space for the
point of sale menu. Since there was nothing else
available at the time, this project was set aside to
wait for the industry to develop something with
a larger screen.
And then came the iPad! Apple’s attractive iPad
feature has a large enough screen, and that, along
with the simplicity of using its flowing touch
screen, has proved to be a truly great solution in
fulfilling the request our General Manager made
a few years back. So don’t be surprised if you see
more and more of your waiters approaching your
table with an iPad in hand to take your order. One
January / February 2012
of the advantages of this new system allows the
chef to receive your order before the wait staff walks
into the kitchen, instantaneously. The faster your
order is placed, the faster it gets to your table.
Another new feature now available is the wireless
media connector at the main bar TV called the HD
Flow. This Audio Video feature will allow you to
plug your iPhone, iPad, iPod or Laptop into the
controller and have your media displayed onto the
large TV screen located at the bar lounge. This is
great for sharing your pictures or videos at meetings
or connecting your laptop for a quick presentation
with your client.
Wouldn’t it be great if the Valet knew you were
ready to have your car delivered before you reach
the Porte-cochere? Well, one of the Club’s newest
up-coming technologies will allow just that. When
using RFID, which stands for Radio Frequency
Identification, to communicate to the Valet, your
car will be ready for you just as you arrive to pick it
up. This system is currently in process and will be
coming soon to the Lobby areas at the Club.
As we continually research new technologies and
features that are beneficial to the club, we will keep
you updated in our Technology Corner.
2012. What do we, you and us, have to look
forward to this year?
If the vote goes well and phase 2 has passed,
your Long Range Planning Committee along
with your Board will be working hard along
with our architects getting the final plans submitted to the City for permitting, meeting with
our contractors and getting competitive bids
from vendors and sub-contractors to obtain
the lowest possible prices for the completion
of phase 2 and finalizing the enormous
amount of paperwork required by our bank.
In May the pool will close and shortly thereafter the Center Court Grill. We will keep the
fitness center open for as long as possible..
Temporary fitness facilities will be used after
the closing and we anticipate obtaining use
of some of the facilities from our neighbors
so that your inconveniences will be minimized.
The summer months will pass by quickly with
much work happening at all levels. As we
enter the fall we will be able to see the outlines of what our new facilities will look like.
As Thanksgiving approaches our schedule
calls for the grand re-opening of our new
pool facility and fitness center. We will see
the Spa open in late January or mid February 2013. All very exciting.
Looking ahead to 2013, I foresee us all relaxing and enjoying the new facilities, as well
as those currently existing in a year with no
construction….ahhhhh!
Oh yes, 2012 will also have us using our new
interactive website that will be easy to navigate and provide our members and prospective members with all the information they
need regarding the Club along with being
integrated with the social media of today.
I wish you all a wonderful year,

was contested on December
10th and 11th. And this year’s
format was different than
that in the past. On Saturday
nine holes were played as an alternate shot
format and nine holes were played as a scramble.
On Sunday it was one best ball of two. All the
scores were combined to come up with a low

Upcoming Events
Now that our first major of the year is over ie:
Presidents Cup, it is time for the Men and Women
to invite their guests for the annual Member/Guest.
As always, there is an overwhelming response from
the member to participate in these events. And,
again you will not be disappointed. And, because
of the Women’s event popularity it has evolved into
a two day event. Those teams that did not get
picked in the lottery for the Tuesday January 17
event will be able to play in their own event on
Monday January 16.
The Men will have their event the day after on
Wednesday, January 18.
Rejuvenate Your Game
The Lesson Academy this year has many options.
There is still time for you to improve your game
with our P.G.A. Instructors. It is never too late to
rejuvenate your game with good fundamentals
and proper technique and that is exactly what
you will get with any of the Lesson Academy
programs. Just ask any academy member. It
should not be hard to find them; they tend to
be the tournament winners and those out
playing consistently
consistently.

After some trials and tribulations on the greens due to
an outburst of the disease Bermuda Grass Decline we
experienced this summer and some discovery of the
past construction, the greens have come back with
several modifications to our operation that are “old
school” when it comes to Tifeagle Bermudagrass. We
are rolling a day or two more each week and I have
split applications of growth regulator chemicals that
seem to have done the trick of increased quality, overall
health and speed of the greens. continued on pg 8

On behalf of the Old
Course Staff we would like
to wish everyone a very
Happy New Year. We
hope 2012 is a year filled
with joy, family, friends and
long drives here at The
Old Course.
The opening day for the
Old Course Men’s Golf Association was held on
November 7th and received great participation.
The day featured a first flight winning team of
Jeffrey Rudnick, Gary Cohen, Norm Kamikow & Gil
Raphael. The first place team in the second flight
was comprised of Mike Carona, Don Mitzner, Marc
Beresin & James Moore. The third flight winning
team was Charlie Holmes, James Lanting, Roy
Reiner & Arnold Midlarsky.
The Old Course Ladies Golf Association held their
opening day on November 3rd and featured a day
of great fun and camaraderie. The first flight gross
winning team was Joan Sandler, Donna Gordon,
Karen Norman & Clarine Lanting. The first flight
net winning team featured Andrea Rosenfield, Gail
Mitzner, Susan Goldstein & Andrea Appel. The
second flight gross winning team was Jeanne
Epstein, Fran Loraine, Kathy Oliver & Susan
Rudnick. The first place net team in the second
flight was Kathy Frank, Susan Shin, Sandy Ende &
Betty Rubenstein.
The month of December was filled with a couple’s
mixer on the 18th, a men’s mixer on the 5th, three
ladies league events and also the first ever
Meatballs & Martini’s night golf event on the 8th.
As we continue into the season, we have many
events scheduled which promise to be filled with
excitement and fun including the member guests,
couple’s mixers as well as ladies and men’s league
events. We will also have multiple demo days
featuring Titleist, Taylor Made, Cleveland, Cobra
and Ping, whom will all showcase their equipment
for you here at The Old Course.

The Old Course will again be host to The Allianz
Championship February 6th – 12th. A real highlight
for the members will be the Member Pro-Am,
scheduled for Monday, February 6th. It was a big
success last year and should be this year as well.

The golf courses have been holding up with the mild
weather and increased play. The grass may go off color
from time to time during really cold spells, especially if it
stays cloudy for an extended period, but it never truly goes
completely dormant in the Boca Raton area.
The experiment with keeping the stakes and ropes down
on both courses has been a cautious success so far. We
will continue to monitor the adherence to the rules of cart
use and the wear from handicap players who are the only
ones allowed to park at the colored balls around the greens.
If we continue to see various players drive over the white
approach ropes on the Club Course and non-handicap
players drive up around the greens on both courses, you
will see ropes, signs and stakes go back into play. The more
the traffic deterrence we install out on the courses, the less
mowing, trimming and detailing of the golf course we can
do. Please follow the rules and be courteous to fellow
golfers by fixing your ball marks, fill your divots and rake the
bunkers after use. “The condition of the golf course is
indicative of its membership.”
OLD COURSE:
continued from pg 7
The greens are rolling true and fast as they have done for
the past few years. The true test is how much impact we
had in the composting this past summer on the fairways
along with the multiple aerifications. So far golfers had
said they are being able to hit down and through the top
layer of the soil easier than years past and the soil seems
richer. We know that the composting works and as time
goes by, it will only improve the soil and it’s holding capacity
for water and nutrients. We always strive to give you the
best experience we can year in and year out at the Old
Course. Do not hesitate to give suggestions and feed back
to Mr. Jim Casty, (Green Chairman), John Skaf (Head
Professional), Mr. John Crean (General Manager) or myself
as the Director of Golf Maintenance.
Club Course:
continued from pg 8
The greens are very fickle on the Club Course and usually
are very subjective as the weather goes. The fairways on
the other hand have been doing really well, including the
past trouble makers, holes #2, #4, #8 and #9. Each one of
these fairways was given at least two full top dressings of
homemade compost this past year. I would like to
concentrate more compost we are creating this winter in
rough areas.
The composting and mulch we are making is a huge
operation to say the least. In December alone we have put
out over 300 tons of green waste mulch (debris from our
trimming operations without any food waste added) in
landscape beds that were notorious erosion problems and
new beds on weak areas under trees where only weeds
survive. The quality of the double shredded mulch we
create is a much better medium for the trees but also in
playability. It is easier to find your ball than the pine straw
we used to put out but it also is easier to hit out of, even to
get some spin action for those that have that touch. Where
we were spending almost $30,000 for mulch and pine
straw our cost are now under $500 for that line item.
Hopefully in the next Newsletter I will have a better analysis
of the Composting operation of costs versus savings and
impact.

With the start of the new season more venues
reopened to the membership. The Pool Bar is
doing wonderfully, and Monday’s Burgers and

St Andrews Tennis Challenge
Saturday December 3rd we traveled to St.
Andrews Club and played in our 11th annual
tennis challenge and I must say this was the most
exciting finish we’ve had. There were 14 matches
that were tied 7-7, then we counted sets won and
they also were tied. Then we counted games won
and Broken Sound Club won 142-128. We will
keep the trophy for another year! There were 28
players from each club who participated in men’s
and ladies doubles and mixed doubles with a
great display of tennis abilities and sportsmanship.
All the participants enjoyed a wonderful day and
as always we look forward to next year’s event.
followed by the Women’s member guest on
Monday March 5th. Sign up early for both of these
popular events. If you have any questions about
any of our upcoming events please call us at the

you. Please come out and support your friends and
watch them compete against other clubs.

Defending the Lob in Doubles
The first line of defense for a lob is an overhead...there is no other shot that is
more of an equalizer for a lob! Having a good overhead sends your opponent
the message that the lob will not work. Eliminating a shot your opponent can hit
causes them to have to rethink their strategy and takes away the option of the
lob.
If you and your partner are at the net and your opponents are hitting deep lobs
that prevent you from hitting effective overheads, your team should play closer
to the service line.
If at some point during the rally you have an opportunity to hit the ball short, do so. This will make it
more difficult for your opponents to hit a successful lob because there will be less court into which your
opponents can hit.
If you are not able to hit effective overheads, and hitting the ball short or playing closer to the service
line does not work, then you and your partner should play two back.
Monica Seles places her mark on Larry Kobren
You have an arsenal of defenses against the lob...you just have to play smart!

Broken Sound Hadassah has started the season
with a bang. We hosted two successful fund
raising events. The first was the very zany antics of
Gary Goodman, illusionist and mind reader
extraordinaire. Has anyone figured out his
telephone book trick or how he knew the words
on a random page in a book? Then we had our
first member-guest men’s and women’s Card Party,
Brunch and Boutique. Four brave men enjoyed
their bridge game and no doubt also enjoyed the
generous table of nova, whitefish and bagels. It
was a fabulous day. We are looking for a dozen
good men or women so that we can run a
sanctioned duplicate bridge game next time.

Broken Sound Member Brings New
Theater to Boca Raton
This January, Parade Productions, a new

their debut performance of the “Brooklyn Boy”

theatre is that you can’t do it alone. It literally takes
a village. And our village, especially Broken Sound,
has been behind us from the beginning. We
couldn’t be more grateful.” So now a Broken Sound
member’s lifelong dream comes true.
“Brooklyn Boy” will be presented at The Studio at
