The configuration page prints out the Tray TYPE of all trays (1,2,3 & 4 if installed), but only states the page SIZE of Tray 1. This can sometimes be a problem if the tray size-select switches are faulty as the printer will ignore the tray being requested and offer another tray instead. It can be difficult too for Call Qual when talking to a customer to determine if they have inadvertantly placed a guide in the wrong slot and selected a wrong size for the paper being used. Here is how to determine the page size which the printer believes is set for each tray: 1) Via the front panel set a DIFFERENT paper TYPE for each tray, i.e. Tray 1 = RECYCLED Tray 2 = LETTERHEAD Tray 3 = BOND Tray 4 = PREPRINTED Note it doesn't matter what is in the tray; these are merely labels to help identify a particular tray. 2) Ensure there is no paper in Tray 1. 3) Run PAPERPATH TEST (last item in the TEST menu), and select the following: INPUT TRAY = 1 NUMBER OF COPIES = 1 As soon as the test tries to run it will flash a message to say tray 1 is out of paper, i.e. LOAD TRAY 1 RECYCLED ISO A4 Press ONLINE, PRINT ON PREPRINTED ISO A3 INSTEAD? Press ONLINE, PRINT ON LETTERHEAD ISO A4 INSTEAD? Press ONLINE, PRINT ON BOND ISO A4 INSTEAD? To come out of this press SELECT to complete the test (for a tray containing paper). Using the information on tray types from the Config Page, this tells us the printer believes: A3 (PREPRINTED) is in Tray 4 A4 (LETTERHEAD) is in Tray 2 A4 (BOND) is in Tray 3 If the actual paper loaded does not correspond to these figures then suspect the tray size-select switches or else paper guides in the wrong location. 5 LaserJet 5Si / 5SiMX / 5SiNX / 5Si Mopier Abbreviated SERVICE NOTE C3166A-10B C3167A-10B Serial Number: 220V: XXYC00000 - XXYJ99999 XX = US, NL, or SG Y = Q,R, or S for 220V Part Numbers: Exchange New C3168-69006 C3168-67906 LaserJet 5Si Printer Firmware Roll to Version 9.95e Parts Required: Formatter Firmware Assembly Situation: The firmware for the LaserJet 5Si has rolled to a new version, which includes corrections to specific, error conditions that exist in previously released versions. If any of the problems listed below are experienced, an upgrade to the new version is recommended. Solution: Hewlett-Packard Company has made available the version 9.95e formatter firmware assembly for the LaserJet 5Si Family of products as of May 1, 1998. Fixes for the 9.7 version of firmware included in the new 9.95e version of firmware are: 79 Service Errors (060D) 21 - Memory Overflow error: Firmware data compression did not work due to a problem with a timeout error generated by an ASIC not responding to a compression/decompression command. 56.01 Errors (Illegal input device): When coming out of power-save mode, the printer generated a 56.01 error. Duplex print jobs being printed out of sequence: This problem occurred intermittently. Occasionally, when a job was printed in duplex mode, the output would be out of sequence. "Processing from Tray n" hangs: This problem was related to duplex printing out of sequence. Duplex jams when using PostScript. Implemented code to correct functionality. Slow printing with the PCL driver: When rendering reasonably sized files, the driver memory block became fragmented. As a result, in some cases, the rate of output was dramatically reduced to approximately 4ppm. NOTE: This same problem may occur with the 9.95 formatter firmware assembly if it does not have at least a total of 12MBytes of RAM. 79 Service Errors (08fe) in Dutch Language: Inserted a line feed in the message on the control panel when attempting to set the number of lines of a page so that a message fits in the 16x2 character field. 6 HISTORY Firmware version 9.7 included the following fixes for Firmware version 9.1, and Firmware version 8.6 FIXED A SLOW PRINTING PROBLEM: Fixed a memory fragmentation quotient calculation, and also the 600-dpi-raster graphics problem. Both these problems caused the printer to print at about 5 PPM. FONT PROBLEM FIXED: It appears that 3 fonts out of HP's entire font library had negative values for stroke weight, which the firmware represented as very positive stroke weight fonts. To the user, these very light fonts appeared as very thick (heavy) fonts, once they were downloaded to the disk, and the user referenced them by attribute. FIXED A SPECIFIC PROBLEM WITH AN MIO DEVICE BUILT BY DCO: This was the Network to Parallel box, which was being tested by DCO for compatibility against version 9.1 code. It was found that it was failing once every 10 files that were being sent to it. HUNG IN "PROCESSING JOB": The printer has the potential to hang up and not respond to any keypresses from the front panel. The front panel will display "PROCESSINGJOB". To get out of this locked up mode required power-cycling the printer. This is corrected in the 9.1 firmware. 20 MEMORY OVERFLOW PROBLEM There was a problem with memory allocation in the 7.9 firmware, which allocated the maximum amount available. This resulted in numerous memory overflow problems. The problem was fixed to allocate just the required amount of memory. This is corrected in the 9.1 firmware. FORM LENGTH SELECTION FROM THE FRONT PANEL This function can be found in the PCL MENU structure of the control panel.Slow Printing of forms: Versions 7.9, 8.5 & 8.6 firmware had a problem handling raster graphics in 300dpi mode. The problem was that the size of the raster strip used was too small and inefficient. The fix implemented allows formatter to run near engine speed. This is corrected in the 9.1 firmware. INTERNAL TRAYS NOT LIFTING WHILE IN POWERSAVE MODE. If the user opened one of the internal trays while the printer was in Powersave mode, it would not lift it after it was closed. This would result in a "Out of Paper" message for that tray. IMPROPER SELECTION OF TRANSPARENCIES AND CARDSTOCK ALLOWED FROM INTERNAL TRAYS: There was a support issue with customers being able to select transparencies and cardstock as a paper type from the front panel, even though they were not supported from internal trays 2, and 3. It was hard to explain to customers that we don't support those paper types from those trays, when they appeared as a selection on the front panel. These choice no longer appear as a choice from the front panel. Firmware version 8.6 included fixes for the following problems in Firmware ver 8.5 MIO and NVRAM Reset problems. 7 Firmware version 8.5 included fixes for the following problems in firmware ver 7.9 Fixed numerous 79 Service errors Printer hangs if printing after a power Cycle Reset was done when the printer was in power save mode. Fixed a hang in “Processing Job” when printing a PostScript Duplex job and the source paper tray runs out of paper when the job is not finished. Fixed bug where PostScript Configuration page would "hang" the printer if there was an error (TRAY 2 EMPTY) on the front panel. Hang in internal test at power up was fixed. Fixed a bug that wouldn't let you select the pitch size for a permanent soft font. 20 Memory Overflow problem fixed. Crash with Cyrillic font Simm. Fixed a bug where PJL default JOBID only works if diagnostics is on. OS/2 Job-Cancel bug fixed. Fixed a bug that hangs the printer when the menu item MIO CFG is set to YES (Configure) and then a PCL Configuration page is selected to print. Changed the string ISO A3 paper size to A3. Fixed a floating Point problem where HP was not properly initializing the floating point registers. Hang while canceling a PostScript job. (This was a problem when doing a C in the middle of sending a PostScript job in a UNIX environment and then selecting Cancel Job from the front panel.) Action: Any formatter assembly, that exhibits any of the previously, described problems listed in this service note should be replaced by the version 9.95 Formatter Firmware Assembly, exchange part number C3168-69006 or new part number C3168-67906. Removal and replacement instructions are as described in the troubleshooting section of the HP LaserJet 5Si service manual. 8 Ø PH Compatibility Matrix at LaserJet 8000 printer introduction PH Device HP LaserJet 8000/N/DN Printer and Mopier 240 HP LaserJet 5Si Printer Family and 5Si Mopier Comments Envelope Feeder C3765B C3765B C3765B works in LaserJet 5Si,NX,MX and 8000,N,DN Printers and Mopier 240, 5Si Mopier 2,000-Sheet Input Tray C4781A C3763A, C4781A (Note 1) Note 1: For C4781A to work in a 5Si,NX,MX and 5Si Mopier, it requires purchasing a Paper Handling controller C3768A separately. 2x500-Sheet Input Tray C4780A N/A Not backward compatible to 5Si,NX,MX nor 5Si Mopier 7-Bin Tabletop Mailbox C4783A N/A Not backward compatible to 5Si,NX,MX nor 5Si Mopier Stand for 7-Bin Tabletop Mailbox C4784A N/A Not backward compatible to 5Si,NX,MX nor 5Si Mopier 8-Bin Mailbox C4785A C4785A Ø C4785A works in LaserJet 5Si/NX/MX and 8000/N/DN Printers and Mopier 240, 5Si Mopier. The new type C3166-69018 has been out for a few months. This has a cleaning roller fuser in the bottom to help eliminate the possibility of fuser contamination. How do you tell a fuser is the new type with a cleaning roller? Turn the fuser upside down and look through 2 holes in the bottom, one at each end. If a (steel) shaft can be seen, then that fuser has the cleaning roller fitted. Currently there are some shortages but these are being addressed. Spool 32 Error Problem: Spool 32 error when printing to Hewlett-Packard LaserJet (III/4/5/6) printers from Windows 95 workstations with EMF spooling enabled. Error occurs with varying frequency. This is an operating system error and is specific to the Microsoft EMF subsystem spooler. With EMF spooling the error occurs with both Microsoft and HP drivers; with RAW spooling enabled the error does not occur with any consistency with either driver loaded. Microsoft suggest to install a new SPOOLSS.DLL file (from MS) on each workstation with the problem and then go to properties and under Details select “Start Printing after last page is spooled.” This should help although not eliminate the problem. This problem really needs to be solved by Microsoft but if the customer insists HP find a solution then support/ECSC need to get involved. LaserJet 4000 Coupler breaking We have had numerous cases of a coupler breaking in the pick-up area. The coupler, p/n RB1-8877000CN usually shears off at one end, with the smaller piece often disappearing. The coupler is part of the pick-up drive assembly but these are different for the upper/lower trays in a LJ4000T and different again for the 500sh tray in a LJ4000. In any case, it is usually only necessary to replace the coupler (common across each drive assy). One reason given by division for the failure is over filling of the tray, although this seems unlikely to be the main cause (which is probably just due to weak plastic). LaserJet 5L Cleaning Kits Since the middle of last year a cleaning kit has been available from fulfillment houses (Starpak) to “rejuvenate” the pick-up roller. This was found necessary on some units which had low usage and were experiencing pick-up problems. The reason for this was residual oil (from the rubber curing process during manufacture) coming to the surface of the roller. By cleaning (scrubbing) with the pre-moistened cloth in the kit and drying with the lint-free cloth, the surface oil can be removed. Typically this may need to be repeated once or twice (at 3 month intervals) until all the residual oil has been removed. Heavy usage units never see this problem. The manufacturing process has also been changed so that replacement pick-up rollers do not have any residual oil. Note this does not stop pick problems occurring due to poor media. The cleaning kit can be obtained by contacting the ECSC or phoning Starpak direct on 01429-865511 and asking for instruction sheet C3990-90994. This kit has not been set up with a part number so cannot be ordered through the normal parts channel. 11 Phonebook transfers on the LJ3100 A phonebook transfer may be required if a customer has entered 150+ phone numbers into his 3100 and a service agent needs to replace the Formatter (this obviously assumes the printer is capable of sending a fax). These are the alternatives: • Enter the numbers manually (lengthy) • Perform a Fax-to-Fax phonebook transfer (need second fax) • Access config from a PC and upload the phonebook (need a PC. If PC switched off or screen is closed, then phonebook is lost) Fax-to-Fax phonebook transfer Here is the process. Note the steps must be followed in the order listed to prevent timeouts while waiting for the other fax. A second fax is available in the UK Response Centre (log a Lynx call to request access). RECEIVING FAX Step 1 - Fax Settings è All Faxes è Remote Retreival è ON è Password Step 2 - Service è Remote Setup è RECEIVE Setup è Enabled è Password SENDING FAX Step 3 - Service è Remote Setup è SEND Setup è Send Parameters/Send Phonebook Yes/No -> Password è Phone number Obviously all passwords must be the same (and 4-digits). After the phone number is entered in the sending fax the receiving fax is contacted, the calling tone is heard and then both machines go quiet for around 6 minutes (both displaying Remote Setup). After this time the sending fax prints out a Confirmation report (if configured) saying "Job Completed”, and both faxes revert to the READY state. Uploading Phonebook to a PC 1 2 3 Click on the CONFIGURE box in the main Jetsuite menu Click on the top icon to access config parameters On the next menu click on SPEED DIAL CONFIGURATION (LOADING appears on the PC screen and UPLOADING TO PC appears on the LJ3100 LCD) 4 The contents of the LJ3100 phonebook are displayed on the screen. At this point it is possible to edit the phonebook by adding or deleting names and telephone numbers. With this information 12 displayed on the screen it is then possible to either remove or replace the formatter board and have the ability to restore the contents of the customer’s phonebook. If this window is closed when the formatter has been removed the only way to restore the phonebook is to manually input the details again. 5 Re-connect the LJ3100 to the PC and click OK . DOWNLOADING FROM PC is displayed on the LJ3100 LCD. When complete the download can be verified by printing the contents of the phonebook on the LJ3100. 13 LaserJet 6P,6MP Fuser Pressure Roller Upgrade A new pressure roller (p/n RB1-9210-000CN) is available to make the fusers more tolerant to fuser contamination, i.e. non-repetitive black spots on one or both sides of a printed page. The black spots are poorly fused to the paper and can be removed using a fingernail. Inspection of the red colored, fuser pressure roller reveals black toner/paper dust contamination on the roller. The new pressure roller can be identified by a small groove in the steel shaft halfway between the drive gear and the rubber part of the roller. The use of a Cleaning Utility may also be required: Cleaning Utility Contamination can be cleaned from the surface of the pressure roller using a software “Cleaning Utility”. The problem will often return within the life of one toner cartridge. After installing this upgrade, the interval between failures should be greater than the life of one toner cartridge. A message for customers will soon be contained in the toner cartridge box. The message explains how to obtain and use the Cleaning Utility program, when replacing the toner cartridge. The utility is available from local fulfillment and at the following web site. http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/software/lj123en.exe.html (otherwise log a lynx call to obtain). This problem only occurs with some types of paper combined with local environmental humidity. If this problem reoccurs after this upgrade has been installed, the only solution to this problem is to use the cleaning utility or try a different type of paper. Replacement Procedure: Remove the fusing assembly from the unit. Remove the 2 fuser tension springs located at each end of the fuser. Remove the metal cover plate. Replace the red colored fuser pressure roller using the following time saving hint. Time saving hint: The pressure roller can be removed without disconnecting all the wires on the heating element. Disconnect the large slide off connector at gear end of the heating element. Lift the disconnected end of the heating element in such a way that will allow you to slide the pressure roller out from under the still connected end of the heating element. Move the drive gear and the rubber continuity gear from the old pressure roller to the new pressure roller. Slide in the new roller and reassemble. With practice, this procedure can be performed in less than 10 minutes. After completing the upgrade, a green dot should be placed near the serial number to indicate that the unit has been upgraded.
