Winter 2015 - Matteson Public Library
The Matteson Connection Vol. 29 No.3 Matteson Public Library Newsletter District Letter The Giving Tree Drive: Three Ways To Give November 15, 2015 To the Residents of the Village of Matteson: RE: IMPORTANT NEWS!!! Effective January 1, 2016, the Matteson Public Library will become the Matteson Area Public Library District. The change from a Village Library to a District Library was a legal action taken by the Library Board of Trustees and the Village of Matteson to enhance the Library’s and the Village’s ability to efficiently serve the needs of the public. Rather than operating under the Village of Matteson, the Library will be functioning as a separate unit of government. Advantages to the Library include: B The Library will be able to independently represent its own interests during any economic discussions which have a potential financial impact on library funding. B As a District Library, the Library may be able to annex unincorporated property contiguous to the Village of Matteson. B Library funds received from the State of Illinois will be paid directly to the Library. B Operating under our own Federal ID number rather than the Village’s, will allow the Library to seek additional funding sources. The tax rate you pay for the Library will not change, although there will be a change in the amount levied in the first year due to the adoption of a new fiscal year required by state law. Adult Classes 2-3 Youth Classes 4-5 Winter 2015/2016 November 30th - January 10th We are bringing back the giving tree and are asking for donations of “new” winter hats, socks, mittens, gloves and small personal toiletries for the South Suburban PADS and Rich Township Clothing Bank. The library is sponsoring a food drive for the Rich Township Food Pantry, Please donate non-perishable canned and dry goods. Thank you for all of your support and Happy Holidays! As a Village resident you will not experience any changes in library services or programs. You will still receive the excellent customer service we have always provided. Individuals with concerns or questions about this action should feel free to attend one of the Library’s monthly Board meetings. Sincerely, Matteson Public Library’s Board of Trustees Director's Shelf 6 In Other News 7 On Back 8 Adult Classes Morning Book Discussion 4th Monday of the Month 10:15 AM (NR) Books are available at least 3 weeks in advance of the discussions. ecember D – No Meeting J anuary 25 –P eaceable Kingdom, by Jan De Hartog ebruary 22 F –All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr PC Basics Fridays 9:30 - 11:00 AM (Weekly) (NR) Ongoing self-paced introduction to computers. Director's Shelf The Wishing Season It’s closing in on that time of year again: the “Wishing Season”. Many decades ago, when I was a child, that meant the arrival of the Christmas catalogs from JCPenny’s and Sears -- or as my grandfather called them, my Wish Books. Every year kids share their Christmas wishes with Santa (or anyone else who will listen). Then the New Year comes, and with it, people’s New Year’s resolutions -- and let’s face it, a New Year’s Resolution is essentially a wish for a change in that individual’s life. In that spirit, let me share with you some of my personal wishes for this library in the coming year. I wish that: S …100% of the residents of Matteson had a library card. S …this year’s Giving Tree was so overloaded with donations of mittens, hats, scarves, and socks that we had to add a box to collect the overflow. S … our collections of food and hygiene products top all records for previous years’ collections. S …the Governor would sign the budget and release needed grant dollars for state agencies. S …every child within commuting distance of this library was able to -- and allowed to -- read. S …we had the funding to hire more full-time employees, to provide all of the services we get asked for. S …children in every corner of Matteson had a ride to the library to enjoy the classes and events offered. 50+ People came out and participated in our 1 Mile/5K! Thanks to our sponsors Target, Xsport and Giordanos and all of our wonderful Volunteers! Take a look at the pictures on our Facebook page. Our Winner's are: Kids (1 Mile) 1st Place: Payton Ramsey 2nd Place: Ty'Shaun Holden Adults (5K) 1st Place Runner: Leondus Worsley 2nd Place Runner: Baron Rush 1st Place Female Runner: Artisha Hoskins 2nd Place Female Runner: Sarah Jewett 1st Place Walker: Desiree Cathey S …we had the funding to buy all of the equipment and furnishings on our list of needs and wants. S …every resident of Matteson while enjoying a memorable winter holiday season found the time to stop by their local public library to check out all that has been provided for them. Kathy Berggren, Director Listening Devices In Memory of Joyce Willis, a previous Director of the library, funds have been used to purchase listening devices for patrons with hearing difficulties.
