Feeling lucky? Here’s what’s new and worthwhile
at the casinos in our region. By Jen A. Miller
CONNECTICUT
Connecticut is home to a pair of Native American casino
resorts: The Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino/MGM
Grand at Foxwoods complex. Both offer slots, table games and
betting on horse races from across the country.
◆ The Mohegan Sun’s four-year-old Casino of the Wind is the
newest of four gaming areas. It features a smoke-free, 42-table
poker room and a 35-foot animated water wall. Casino of the
Earth has two smoke-free areas, plus an indoor planetarium,
an enclosed smoke-free room and the Wolf Den entertainment
space. Sunrise Square is where you’ll find Asian gaming and
Cantonese barbecue.
The Mohegan has all the resort amenities you’d expect,
including a spa, shops and meeting space. Both the golf course
and the clubhouse at Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug
have undergone major renovations this year. Live music is also
a big draw here. On Aug. 30, the resort will host the Carnival
of Madness Tour, featuring Evanescence, Chevelle, Cayo and
New Medicine.
◆ Foxwoods Resort Casino debuted as a bingo hall in 1986,
before table games, slots and high-stakes poker came along in
the ’90s. Things really exploded in 2008, with the $700 million
MGM Grand expansion. Both Foxwoods properties are located
on the same property, connected by a moving walkway.
Expect big-name live entertainment, including Jerry Seinfeld
(Aug. 10-11), Jane’s Addiction (Aug. 18) and Duran Duran
(Aug. 24). For kids, Foxwoods offers a two-story arcade and
a 35,000-square-foot bowling alley. Other amenities include
a museum, a golf course (with golf academy) and a spa.
Those coming to stay have five hotel options, ranging
from budget-friendly to high-roller.

Delaware casinos have one thing the other casinos in this guide
don’t: sports betting—and during football season especially,
it’s a major draw.
◆ Dover Downs Hotel & Casino wears three different hats. There’s
the casino, which is smoke-free and offers slots and table games.
There’s also the Dover International Speedway, a one-mile NASCAR
racetrack also known as the Monster Mile. Dover also has a track
for harness racing, which is opened from late October through
mid-April.
This year, Dover Downs added new meeting rooms and
enhanced the buffet with an expanded noodle bar, grill-to-order
options and a dessert section. It’s also the only Delaware casino
to have a hotel on site—and there’s also a spa.
◆ Delaware Park Racetrack and Casino doesn’t host NASCAR
races, but it does have a golf course at White Clay Creek Country
Club. And, of course, there’s plenty of slots and table games, horse
racing (harness and thoroughbred), and 2,500 video lottery
machines. This year’s harness-racing season runs until Nov. 3,
with a family fun day on Aug. 18 and twilight racing on Aug. 23
and 30 and Sept. 6 and 13.
◆ Harrington Raceway & Casino has been hosting horse races
every year since 1946—both harness and thoroughbred. You’ll also
find 2,000 video lottery machines. Horses run Sunday-Thursday
April-June and August-October. The casino houses 1,800 slots,
plus table games. Live entertainment is also a draw (comedian
Jeff Foxworthy was a recent headliner).

MARYLAND
What’s old is new again in Maryland. Gaming was first legalized in the state
in 1943, but slots were shut down in 1968. In 2008, however, Maryland residents
approved a measure to bring back slots-only gaming, leading to three new
casinos. These aren’t casino resort complexes like the ones you’ll find in other
nearby states. For now, they’re slots parlors with video table games, with some
dining and nightlife options.
◆ Opened in 2010, Hollywood Casino Perryville has more than 1,500 slots.
Maryland Live! opened the first phase of its complex in June 2012 and will
open the second later this year. Adjacent to the Arundel Mills Mall, it includes
brand restaurants like the Cheesecake Factory, Phillips Seafood and Bobby’s
Burger Palace. Ocean Downs has 750 slots and the Cambridge Turf Club,
which hosts horse racing.
Also worth noting ... A movement to add table games to Maryland casinos
was voted down. But it will most likely be re-introduced this year.

NEW JERSEY
For more than 30 years, Atlantic City had a stranglehold on
East Coast gambling. But that stronghold has since loosened as
other states have gotten in on the action. This is good news for
the rest of us, as the increased competition has compelled AC
to step up its game.
◆ The big story in AC this year is the highly touted debut of Revel,
a $2.4 billion mega-complex featuring dozens of high-end restaurants, the four-story HQ nightclub, a world-class spa and much
more. If you love music, you’ll be a regular at Revel’s Ovation Hall, a
5,500-seat venue that’s already hosted the likes of Beyonce, Maroon
5 and the Black Keys. Or kick it old-school with Barry Manilow on
Sept. 8. Revel is also the only smoke-free casino in AC. Another
big plus: You can actually see the ocean from the gaming floor.
P H O T O S C O U R T E S Y O F R E V E L E N T E R TA I N M E N T
Revel
◆ Kicking off AC’s casino-upgrade trend in 2003, the Borgata
has just finished a $50 million renovation focused on more than
1,500 hotel rooms (think Egyptian cotton linens and 46-inch
flat-screen TVs). Now, the rooms in the original tower measure
up to the lofty standards of those in the ritzy Water Club, which
was added in 2008.
◆ Also on the bay side of town, the former Trump Marina is now
the Golden Nugget. The $150 million in upgrades includes mod
rooms, new restaurants and bars, a spa, shops, and showrooms.
◆ Back on the boardwalk, the Atlantic City Hilton is no more—
at least in name. It’s now the Atlantic City Club Casino Hotel.
After the name change in February, the rooms and gaming floor
went through significant renovations.
◆ Boogie Nights, the popular retro dance party that started at
Resorts, has now moved to the Tropicana. Resorts has fired
back with its new Night Fever dance club.
◆ Trump Plaza may be up for sale, but it’s still dropping some
knowledge this summer, partnering with the Franklin Institute
on the Identity: An Exhibition of You exhibit through Sept. 3.
◆ The Trump organization also sold Steel Pier to a group of local
investors, which promptly enacted a $21-million renovation project.
Head to the furthest end of the pier, away from the boardwalk,
to enjoy a drink over the ocean.
◆ Speaking of the Donald, the Trump Taj Mahal renovated its
Ego Bar to accommodate shows by the Almost Angels dancers
(not strippers) Thursday-Saturday.
◆ The celebrity “appearances” continue unabated at The Pool in
Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City and Dusk at Caesars Atlantic City.
And if you do make it over to Caesars, take a short detour to Harry’s
Oyster Bar at Bally’s next door. Opening just last year, it’s a standout
new addition.
◆ If you like to shop, more good news for you: The Walk added
a 1,200-spot parking garage to its outlet area.
Also worth noting … While you can bet on horse racing at Atlantic
City casinos, there’s no horse track in town. For that, you’ll need to
go to Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. Also, sports betting isn’t
legal in New Jersey—yet. Gov. Chris Christie is pushing for it. Loudly.

NEW YORK
New York’s Class III Indian facilities offer slots and table games.
There’s also the “racinos,” where you can bet on horse racing and
play video slots and electronic table games. Not all New York
casinos are open 24 hours. Only five Class III casinos—all in upstate New York—can keep gaming floors active round the clock.
◆ The closest you’ll get to gambling in New York City is Empire
City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, which offers 5,300 slot machines,
electronic roulette and craps, and year-round harness racing
(a rarity).
◆ About 90 minutes from Empire City, Monticello Casino and
Raceway offers table games, video poker and electronic table
games, plus year-round harness racing. Resorts World Casino
New York in Jamaica, N.Y., has slots and electronic table games,
but no horse racing.
Also worth noting ... New York’s nine racinos are pushing the
state for full-fledged casino status. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is open
to the idea, though nothing new has been proposed. Expect to
see something by 2013.

PENNSYLVANIA
Casinos are still relatively new to Pennsylvania. In 2006, the
Commonwealth’s Gaming Control Board issued its first licenses
to existing racetracks and what would become the new standalone facilities. Live table games didn’t become legal until 2010.
◆ The former Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack is now
Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack—and more has
changed than just the name. Harrah’s has added 200 additional
slot machines and three new restaurants, including Café Napoli,
a 24-hour Italian eatery, and BarleyQue, a microbrew and
barbecue pub. This summer, you’ll also find live bands outside
on the Patio most nights.
SugarHouse Casino
◆ SugarHouse Casino is the only casino in Philadelphia proper,
and it’s trying to expand—but plans have yet to be approved.
Until then, there’s still plenty to do. Aside from slots and table
games, the Refinery Bar hosts PHL17’s Phillies post-game show
and a Wednesday dance party with Jerry Blavat.
◆ Working hard to live up to its “so Vegas” ad campaign, PARX
Casino and Racetrack has been bringing the celebs to Bensalem.
Past guests have included Teresa Giudice of Real Housewives of
New Jersey and Olympian Bruce Jenner (also of Keeping Up with
the Kardashians). PARX offers slots, table games and horse racing.
There’s no hotel on site, but you can book a room at one of
two nearby.
Sands Casino
Resort Bethlehem
◆ The newest addition to the Pennsylvania gaming community,
Valley Forge Casino Resort features two attached hotels: the
Casino Tower and a Radisson. It’s the smallest of the state’s
casinos, with 600 slot machines and 50 table games. Patrons
must spend at least $10 in other Valley Forge Convention Center
facilities before they’re admitted to the gaming floor. Amenities
include restaurants, stores and a spa. You can also get a casino
pass if you’re a guest at a convention, meeting or private function
at the center, or if you buy a membership.
◆ The big news at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem is its new
events center—a 50,000-square-foot multipurpose space that’s
being put to good use, hosting musical acts like Michael Bolton,
Gavin DeGraw and Colbie Caillat, comedians, and live boxing.
Nearby SteelStacks is the place for art shows, music and food
festivals, and outdoor music events.
no
Also worth noting … In April, developer Bart Blatstein
announced plans for a $500 million casino/entertainment
complex in Center City Philadelphia along North Broad Street.
Whether he gets the license is up for debate. Expect further
developments through 2013.
