M att Gaines, who rode Sunettes Dually to win last year’s Super Stakes, comes cutting on 2001 NCHA Derby champion Nu I Wood, by Zack T Wood, as the second rider in today’s first herd. Gaines is up again on Zacks Four Wood in the second bunch. Cutting legend Matlock Rose rides Holidoc Sanman, by Holidoc, for Pam Phillips, daughter of the late B.F. Phillips Jr., in today’s second bunch. TODAY’S SCHEDULE Beginning at 8:00 a.m. 1st go-round, cont. Super Stakes Classic Open 117 entries • 8 sets TOMORROW’S SCHEDULE Beginning at 8:00 a.m. 2nd go-round Super Stakes Classic Open WEDNESDAY’S SCHEDULE Beginning at 8:00 a.m. 1st go-round Super Stakes Open 135 entries • 9 sets Austin Shepard, on Missus Trona, by Little Trona, and John Wold, on Goran, by Bob Acre Doc, tied for yesterday’s high with 221. G oran and Missus Trona, currently tied for high score of the first round, both honed their skills for the Super Stakes Classic Open in Jackson, MS last month. Goran, owned by Bill and Jo Ellard’s EE Ranches, of Pilot Point, TX, was NCHA Eastern National $10,000 Novice reserve champion, while Missus Trona, owned by Benjie Neely, of Lyons, GA, claimed reserve honors in the $3,000 Novice. M issus Trona, by L it t le Trona, worked third in the first bunch under Austin Shepard. “I’ve ridden probably more Little Tronas than anybody and I like them a lot,” said Shepard, who trained Missus Trona for Benjie Neely. Neely owns and showed Little Trona, who stands at Windward Stud in Purcell, OK. “Missus Trona is fun to show,” said Shepard. “Whatever you cut, she can make it look good. She tries to help and it makes me appreciate her. She’s really gritty and I like a real gritty horse.” Shepard, 24, began his career at 19, under the guidance of his father, trainer Sam Shepard, and was reserve champion of the 2001 Memphis Futurity on Playguns Desire. Benjie Neely will also ride Missus Trona, who she says is a lot like her sire, in the Non-Pro division. “I usually show what we raise,” noted Neely. “Missus Trona is one of the few that we’ve purchased and we just did that because she was a Little Trona. Little Trona, by Freckles Playboy, is half-brother to the great producer Lynx Melody, whose offspring have earned more than $1 million. Goran is also the product of a great female family. His dam, Laney Doc, has produced offspring with earnings of over Continued on page 2 Left to right: Matt Gaines, winner of last year’s Super Stakes on Sunettes Dually; Roy Carter and Russell Harrison, tied with 220, yesterday’s second-highest score, on Smart Lil Scoot and Sweet Lil CD, respectively. Continued from page 1 $800,000, and her son Laker Doc, also owned by EE Ranches, was a leading sire of four-year-olds in 2001. Laker Doc is also the sire of Raked In Satin, who was one of yesterday’s high-scoring performers, with 218 points under Guy Woods. “All of the Laney Docs are real low-headed and quick with their front feet,” said Woods, referring to Goran’s and Raked In Satin’s hallmark style. “They’re nearly identical doing that kind of stuff.” It was Woods who started Laney Doc, a 1982 Doc Quixote daughter, when she was owned by Crawford Farms. Bill Riddle rode the mare to earn nearly $250,000 for Fares Farms, and Bill and Jo Ellard purchased her at the Fares Ranch dispersal. Woods trained Goran, as he has all of EE Ranches’ horses, and enlisted Wold to ride the gelding shortly before the Eastern National Finals, where Woods won the $10,000 Novice with 224 points on Raked in Satin and Wold scored 223 on Goran for second. “He’s a real physical talent and really a strong cow horse,” said Wold of Goran. “Once he knows what you’re trying to cut, he helps you get that calf separated. You don’t have to worry about him being over-matched or not having enough ability to hold whatever you cut him. If it will honor him, he can work it. He’s a very complete individual.” Wold won the 1996 NCHA Derby on Play My Dream for Debra and Jack Furst. Back in the swing of things Dean Sanders and Swinging Little Gal haven’t let the grass grow under their feet in the past week. Saturday afternoon, Sanders and his 5-year-old Justa Swinging Peppy daughter won the Non-Pro Super Stakes Classic with 221 points; yesterday, they marked 218 in the first herd. Last year, Sanders’ mare Smart Little Peanut, by Smart Little Lena, was reserve champion of the Open Super Stakes under Faron Hightower and was later named NCHA Horse of the Year. Sanders rides Smart Little Peanut today as the last entry in the third bunch. Greg Coalson, of Weatherford, TX, who was last year’s Super Stakes Classic Non-Pro reserve champion, on Quejanapep, rides the Dual Pep daughter in the third bunch. “She’s a very smart mare,” said Coalson. “Cows never trick her into making a bad move. She was hard to train because she was so cowy.” You say it’s your birthday! These NCHA members are celebrating their birthday today. Ouida Bailey.................
