Iowa’s Military Cemeteries
By Carl Nollen
“To care for him, who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan”
-- (Abraham Lincoln)
It would be appropriate this Memorial Day to learn about Iowa’s two military cemeteries.
Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter, Iowa at Interstate 80 at Exit 113.
This new cemetery is located on the southeast corner of this interstate exit. It is noticed by thousands of
travelers each day due to a large sign on a giant wall marking the site for all to see. The cemetery site is
100 acres on high ground above the highway. The location is 10 miles west of the Interstate 35 and
Interstate 80 interchange in West Des Moines. William Knapp donated 76.5 acres and Ronald Kenyon
donated 23.5 acres. The Iowa Legislature set aside $500,000 for this needed project and ground was
broken in 2006 with 80,000 burials planned for the future. The first burial was in July of 2008. Since
then, over 1100 burials have taken place in less than four years. This number shows the need that this
military cemetery fills. There is an average of 1 or 2 burials a day. Four committal services can be
accommodated per day if necessary.
Jodi Tymeson, the Executive Director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, is in charge of this
cemetery. She was appointed by Governor Branstad in December of 2010. She was the first female
promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the Iowa Army National Guard where she has served from
1974 to 2007. From 2001 to 2011 she was a Republican representative in the Iowa House. Her office is
located in the Administration Building on the north end of the cemetery grounds. She and her Veterans
Assistant, David Riley, were very helpful on the day this writer visited the cemetery. Noticeable were
the meadowlarks singing from the young trees. The huge sandstone boulders here and there are a
distinctive sight.
There are currently six Sections in use plus the Columbaria and the Memorial Walk. The Memorial
Walk is for those whose
remains are not buried here.
Sections 2, 3, and 4 are for inground urns. Sections 5, 8B,
and 32A are for casket burials.
The Columbarium Wall Plaza is
between Sections 2 and 3 for
ashes in urns. Burials take place
in order of the next available

plot. You cannot choose your spot or your headstone. All stones are the same. They are the standard
marble size of 42” high by 13” wide and 4” thick. They weigh 230 lbs. There is no cost for an eligible
Veteran. This includes opening or closing the burial site, grave liner, grave marker, and perpetual care.
There is a $300 fee for an eligible spouse. Casketed married couples’ burials are in 3’x8’ plots with the
first spouse to die buried below the second spouse. Single Veterans’ burials are 4’x8’ plots. The
Committal Shelter takes the place of the gravesite tent. A funeral or visitation must take place elsewhere.
There is no requirement for a Veteran to be a resident of Iowa. Inscriptions on a headstone will include
the person’s name, rank, and branch of service, war period, awards, medals, and two lines of personal
inscription.
An article of the first burial at the cemetery appeared July 7, 2008. It was reported in the Des Moines
Register Metro Section on August 4, 2008. Captain Jessie Ann Carmichael USAF served in the Vietnam
War and was killed in a car accident near Williamsburg.
An article on August 26, 2008 in the Des Moines Register Metro Section reported the burial of a
homeless Veteran who was William Eugene Stevens of the U.S. Army. He had no family and his burial
on August 25 was coordinated by Bill Lachlan who is the Iowa Coordinator for the Missing in America
Project. This organization’s purpose is to give proper burials for Veterans with no known family
members.
The Purple Heart is a medal awarded to veterans who have been wounded or killed in
combat.

Keokuk National Cemetery at 1701 J Street, Keokuk, Iowa
Iowa’s “Little Arlington” was established in 1861, when Keokuk was the site of
five hospitals caring for the Civil War wounded. There are 4115 burials in the 2.75
acres site south and adjacent to the Oakland Cemetery which is Keokuk’s public
cemetery of 100 acres. There is an Unknown Soldiers’ monument for the 48
unknown soldiers buried here.
Eight Confederate prisoners of war are here. There is one Medal of Honor Veteran
who is PFC John F. Thorson, WWII, Army, 28 October 1944. This medal is the
highest military decoration awarded to those who show great bravery at the risk of
by Dale and Marie Findagrave.com
their lives.
There are two entrances for the two sections which are the J street entrance on the
west and the 18th street entrance for the eastern section. Buildings on the site are a
superintendent’s lodge built in 1870 and a maintenance building for each section.
The first interments were marked with white-painted headboards lettered in black
which were replaced later by upright marble markers.
Remains from the Fort Des Moines post cemetery were re-interred here in 1948.
There is an incomplete online list of veterans buried at this cemetery gathered from
the records of the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs on the Interment.net
website, http://www.interment.net/data/us/ia/lee/keokuknat/index.htm.
Findagrave.com by Kent Koosi
In the Keokuk Public Library is a book, Record of Burials in National Cemetery Keokuk Iowa 18611983, 148 pages, call number, GEN929.377799 KEO.
In the State Historical Library in Iowa City is a typed manuscript with handwritten notes with the same
title, by Frederic C. Smith, 1952, 52 pages, call number F627.I4 S6.
There is no burial listing for this cemetery at either IGS or the State Historical Library in Des Moines.
There are only about 100 burials per year now at the cemetery.
The Keokuk National Cemetery is still open for burials.

This book is online to be read at familysearch.org. It is an excellent source for understanding
the Cemetery at Keokuk, Iowa. You have to glean through it to find the ancestor you might
have listed. There are other books at familysearch.org that might assist you, as well. And do
not forget the State Historical Society and our own Iowa Genealogical Society!
2. Sharon DeBartolo Carmack, “Your Guide to Cemetery Research”, Betterway Books, Cincinnati,
Ohio, 2002. (ISBN- 13: 978-1-557870-589-0)
This is a great book to help with--- the records of death, locating graves, searching a
cemetery, bringing home a tombstone legally, cryptic clues, American burial customs, ethnic
and religious funeral and burial customs, cemetery projects and preservation, and making
cemeteries a family affair . This book discusses all of the items above in great depth,
provides forms to use and examples to ponder over. The book explains why shaving cream
and other acid based products should not be used on headstones.

Honoring the Service That Our Men and Women Gave During WW I and WWII
By Mary Booth and Shirley Woodruff
Cecil Costin served in the Atlantic Ocean in the Navy. Cecil married Mary Booth father’s older sister. It
has been said that he wanted "hot meals and a warm bed at night"! Most of the time, Cecil was in a
submarine chaser which was cruising from Boston to Brazil and back. He did make a cruise into the
Mediterian Sea. From what Mary remembered what her aunt said, “They fought their way out of a
harbor someplace in Italy while their ship was shot up pretty bad”. Submarine
chasers were like destroyers. They were ships that sailed on top and cruised at
fast speeds. She does not know of any special medals he received. But when he
came home at the end of the war, he became a City Street Commissioner for
Corning, Iowa. Cecil is on the front cover of this issue.
Fred Bauer Jr was a younger brother of Mary Booth’s father. Fred was in his
late 20’s when he served in the Army. He was the Water Commissioner in
Corning, Iowa when the war began. He enlisted in the army and was stationed at
Fort Belvoir in Virginia. While there, the water purification machine broke
down and he fixed it, for it was like the one he used in Corning. The commander
of the division promoted him on the spot and gave him the job of keeping the
purification machine going. He served in Europe. Mary is not sure for she has
not been able to obtain his records. She thinks he was with
the 8th Army Division. Mary knows he was with the group
that met the Russians at the Rhine River, and that his unit
freed a concentration camp. Fred moved from a basic private
to a Master Sergeant. The Military wanted him to go to
officer training school. As to any medals, Fred was awarded
the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater
Service Ribbon, and the WW II Victory and EuropeanAfrican Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. Fred was not
wounded, but he saw a lot of action from what she heard him
Fred on the Left
talk about. Fred is on the left side of this picture.
Eugene Bauer was my father’s youngest brother. He enlisted in the army in May of 1943. Eugene was
stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was in the Field Artillery. He transferred to the Infantry in
England and he joined the Paratroopers receiving his "wings and boots" in October of 1944 Eugene was
killed in Belgium in the “Battle of the Bulge” on December 20, 1944, while he was serving with the
82nd Airborne Infantry. He was buried at Henri Chappelle in Belgium. On December 10, 1947, his
Eugene Bauer
body was returned to Corning, Iowa for a final
burial. Eugene received the Purple Heart. (Eugene is on the front cover of this issue).

Readers may be wondering why Mary’s father did not serve, since he had so many in his family who
did. About 12 years previous to the start of the war, her father had lost his right lower leg in a
motorcycle accident making him 4F and last to be called up.
Paul Howard Booth is the father of Ken Booth. He remained a civilian until
October of 1944. He served in the 41st Cavalry Reconnaissance in the
Pacific. He was awarded: the Pacific Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and
the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Paul never talked much, at all, about what he
did during the war. But Ken remembers his dad talking about being sent into
Japan right after the atomic bombs were dropped and the devastation that he
saw. He did mention being behind enemy lines a couple of times on
reconnaissance. (Paul is on the front cover of this issue).
Cole, Roy C. Wyoming Private AM PN 1 Div.
Roy Cole fought during WWI. The effects of
WWI weighed heavily on this man. He was a person who drove the
truck to haul the guns and then fired them at the enemy. He did not have
hearing protection, so as a result he had permanent severe ringing in his
ears. Nothing would stop the ringing. He suffered greatly for this upon
returning to the USA. He fought in the trenches in France during WWI.
A picture of the truck that Roy drove is above. The truck carried
weapons for the troops. Below is a group of men Roy served with. His tombstone is shown below.
The ship that brought Roy back to
America after the War is shown
above. The other picture is of Roy
and his wife Audrey. Roy is buried in
Readers Cemetery in Savery, Carbon
County, Wyoming.

Vern LeRoy Cole, father of Shirley Woodruff, who fought in WWII is also on the front cover. He was a
machinist’s mate and responsible for keeping the engines running on board the ships. The Pennsylvania
that he served on was hit hard and ended up sinking. Vern narrowly escaped being closed in the engine
room. During this battle, Vern was injured and received a purple heart for that injury. Once healed, he
was sent back and served on the Burleson for the remainder of the War.

Burleson.
Nova Pauline Cox, Shirley Woodruff’s grandmother, served as a WAAC (Women’s Army Auxiliary
Corps) during World War II. Her family had been disbanded through divorce and marriage, so she felt
free enough to enlist.
Nova served at Newport Beach, Virginia also known as Buckroe Beach, Virginia. She was trained at
Fort Des Moines in Iowa. Fort Des Moines was the first WAAC training center. Physical & Other
requirements were: Women had to be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 21 and 45 with no dependents,
be at least 5 feet tall, and weigh 100 pounds or more. Nova fits the criteria.
In July of 1943 a bill was signed into law that made the WAAC a part of the Army. They would be
known as WAC (Women’s Army Corps). All WAACs were given the option of joining the Army as a
member or returning to civilian life. Nova chose to return to civilian life. Nova is on the front cover of
this issue as well.

Honoring Our Army Military Heritage At Camp Dodge
“Iowa Gold Star Museum”
By Editor, Shirley Woodruff
On March 30, 2012 I had the opportunity to visit and meet with the curator of the “Iowa Gold Star
Museum” at Camp Dodge. Michael W. Vogt was very pleasant and made us aware of all the different
war displays at the Museum.
The tour of the museum starts with the
Weapons Room where WWII and a
few WWI rifles etc. are to be found.
We next encounter is a display for
Lewis and Clark.
Next to this display is the Mexican War Display from 1846 to 1848.

A new Civil War Area is being constructed
and will be probably completed this
summer.
The Spanish American War is the next area
where a display is. Then we are lead to a
viewing area to see a WWI video with
WWI Barracks (Fort Des Moines facsimile)
and soldiers in dress uniforms.
As we approach the next section, we come
across a POW video taken from footage during WWII. The next war area is the
Korean War with its’ tent and weapons inside.
Korean Tent
Part of Korean Army Uniform
Huey Helicopter
We are made aware of the Vietnam War with a Huey Helicopter which was used often in Vietnam.
There are other vehicles to explore here.
The next area has a submarine periscope
and a conning tower.
We are reminded of the Iraq,
Afghanistan, and Gulf War of 1991 with
a helmet covered with burlap to make
the soldier less visible.
We are also made aware of a Cobra Attack Helicopter that was
present.
The ending section has information about the Navy and the Air Force.

In doing some snooping on our own, we found a
treasure! There is a Library with listings of various
wars and the people who served in the Military. The
shelves are well stocked with books. It was fun to
read about the various soldiers in Iowa from the time
Iowa was part of a territory to what it is today. I
would recommend sometime be set aside for
browsing at this small but wonderful library as you
visit this museum. When visiting, you will need to
enter at the main gate because the north gate is closed.
Ask the soldier at the gate for the easiest route to the
museum and enjoy your experience. Nothing is the
same after you can see the items up close and were
used in the various wars.

Resources for Researching Iowans in the Military
By Sue Claman
This is a much-abbreviated list of materials that can help you research for an Iowa ancestor who served
in the military. Further searches should be done to find regimental and unit histories. One of the easiest
ways to search several library catalogs and find the one closest one to you is to use World Cat at
http://worldcat.org. Please keep in mind that not all library catalogs can be searched from World Cat
(IGS holdings for example). IGS stands for Iowa Genealogical Society and SHL stands for the Iowa

Naturalizations - First Papers – “N & O”
The Iowa Genealogical Society received a number of naturalization documents from the district court
files in Polk County. Volunteer members scanned the documents and when the ink was faded
transcribed the information. Great care was taken to assure each name was correct with the coordinating
scan. The documents were then indexed for easy use.
The images on this page are available to IGS members for $5.00 or to non-members for $7.50 per sheet
plus $2.50 postage and handling by writing to IGS (see page 1 for the address) with the requested
names. The front side, backside, and transcription for an individual all are included in the mailing.
The indexing of the naturalization images used the following guidelines.
•
If there was more than one date on a document, the earliest date was used in the name. The
dating system of "year-month-day" was used.
•
If the immigrant's signature was legible, his spelling was used for the name.
•
If the name was difficult to decipher, other volunteers were consulted. Census indexes, city
directories, and Ancestry.com were also used to determine the name.
•
In the rare instance of not being able to decipher a given name, the symbol ^^^ is used with the
first initial of the name.
•
There are a few documents in which the immigrant wrote his first name and the clerk wrote a
different/similar name; i.e. Johannes vs. Jonathan or Charles vs. Carl. In these cases, the
immigrant's signature was used as the name with the clerk's guess in parentheses.
•
If the document originated in another county, the document was filed in Polk County, Iowa.
•
Even though the document was larger than 8x11 inches, the information on the backside may not
have been that large. So the backside was usually scanned at the 8x11 size. No information was
omitted to do this.
•
Depending on the original paper size, the document was bi-folded or tri-folded to about 3x8 inch
size. The name was written by the court clerk across one end for filing. This resulted in the
"backside" of the document.
•
There were some documents where the name on the backside did not agree with the name on the
actual document. (Sometimes this is the name of the court clerk, which is the first name
appearing on the document).
