The big announcement was the increase in the referral credit members will receive when they pass candidate names along to our Membership Secretary, Carolyn Kearns, and they then subsequently join the Club. The referral fee was raised from $2,000 to $3,000 for all candidates submitted before July, 31st and who join by September 30th. More good news came as a result of the Tiki Bar event, which was a great time for members and friends with another prospective member deciding to join Manor in the midst of the fun. During this month’s newsletter, I thought that I would touch on some of the annuals that have been planted around the club. So far the seasonal color has turned out spectacularly. It has been a nice start to the summer with relatively low seasonal temperatures. The flowers will only continue to grow once the real summer heat arrives as many of the varieties that are planted thrive in the hot summer conditions. One of the Bloomaster planter boxes located at the restaurant deck. This plant is self cleaning, which means you do not have to manually dead head the spent flowers. The Wave Series of Petunias are long lasting bloomers, until frost in the fall and they are known for their spreading growth habit. When used in masses and different colors I think they look the best. July will mark the first Open House we will be hosting this summer and all members are encouraged to help keep the momentum of new membership going by getting the word out to friends. Open House events are a great opportunity to allow friends to come by the Club in a low-pressure environment and to get to know us better. The Open House will be on July 9th at 11:30 a.m. and will be held in conjunction with our monthly Brunch. Families are being encouraged to come and we will be offering tours of the facility to anyone interested in seeing it. As usual, newer members are being asked to pay particular attention to these events as friends may be looking to join a Club much in the same way they recently have. The newer members present the best opportunity to the Club to spread the word to possible candidates. To the right of the Club entrance by the gym you will find a grouping of plants that has been referred to as looking like mini Roses. These plants are called Tuberous Begonias. There are a myriad of colors within the Solenia Begonia series. The two colors at the clubhouse are the Dusty Rose and Light Yellow. The beauty with this plant is not only the profusion of blooms that is produces but the fact that the plant thrives in the sun or the shade. If you have anyone that you believe may be interested in getting to know us better, please refer them to Carolyn Kearns. Also, we are always looking for ideas or new events to make Manor an even better place to enjoy. Please take a moment and pass along any ideas you may have to either Carolyn or myself. Golf Course News To the right of number 10 tee box there is a grouping of many different annuals. This picture depicts white, red and blue Salvia. Behind those are some Canna Lilies, Zinnias, and sun Coleus. By mid summer, this bed will really be well on its way to becoming fully established and it will have much bigger plants with more vibrant color. By Randall S. Pinckney, Golf Course Manager For the last month we have not received much rain. We are currently about 4-6 inches below normal rain-fall for our area. There have been some locally heavy showers but they all seem to pass by Manor. During the hot summer months as a golf course Superintendent I like to be able to control the water with irrigation. When it is too hot a lot of water can be a bad thing because fungus can form on the grass. Unfortunately, irrigation cannot compare with a good rain shower and we really need one. With the centerpiece of the driving range being a Crape Myrtle the annuals surrounding it are sure to have a long lasting summer impact. Immediately surrounding the base of the Crape is a ring of Dusty Miller. The ring outside that is the ‘Red President’ variety of Canna Lilies. They will have deep red blooms that will compliment the already red foliage of the plant. The annuals on the outer edge of the bed include Pennisetum rubrum, a variety of grass that produces red plumes of seed heads, Hypoestes a pink border plant and the Painted Bloodleaf, which has shades of pink and red and really makes a strong statement when grouped together. When experiencing drought conditions the soils will actually form an acid coat rendering the soil water repellent (hydrophobic) or unable to soak up water. There is a product we can spray called a wetting agent that will dissolve the acid coating to allow the water to penetrate the ground. These wetting agents are very effective because they can reduce our nightly watering by 20%. Also, we water manage. Which means we hit only dry spots on greens tees and sometimes rough and fairways with hoses or overhead irrigation, and not the entire area because not everything needs water. Water is a very precious resource. I see a lot of home owner’s waste water using their home lawn irrigation every night. Most home owners who own automatic sprinklers will run them every night or every other regardless of whether or not the grass needs it or if it is raining. Hopefully we will get a few good rain showers soon and that next month I won’t be talking about too much rain. Have an enjoyable summer. 3 Professionally Speaking Senior Golf Association By Larry Velten By Dick Hunt Scholarship Opportunities for Girls By now most parents that have a daughter have heard about the tremendous opportunities for girls to play college golf. The NCAA estimated that last year 250 girls golf scholarships went unused. That sounds crazy and leaves you wondering why. The simple reason is that there are not enough young girls playing golf. With the implementation of Title 9, colleges are required to have the same numbers of female athletes as male. This provides a huge opportunity for female golfers. Throw in the fact that a women’s college team can have up to 6 full scholarships for girls, while only a maximum of 4.5 for boys. Usually these scholarships are split between all the members on the team, but you can see it’s a lot easier to get close to a full scholarship as a female. Carroll Valley Trip Once again, the rolling hills of Carroll Valley welcomed 44 seniors to three days of challenging golf and camaraderie at its best. From June 5th through the 7th we did our best to beat the rigors of the 6400 yard test of our golfing prowess. Each day’s contest was a two-man team, net-better ball. On Monday and Wednesday the entire field of two-man teams contended and on Tuesday the field was divided into two flights. We were once again led by the careful and detailed planning of C.J. Myers. As usual, C.J. had many helpers. Jim Wester handled prize money. John Ogilvie and Carl Ressa kept the score cards straight. Dave Keefe provided professional score cards hot from the press of his own computer program. Ed Boynton was our photographer and I was responsible for the excellent weather. Thanks to all. With all this opportunity, what is realistic to be a female college player? If a high school girl can shoot around 95 in tournament conditions, college is a possibility. If she’s in the 80’s, there will probably be some money available. Keep this in mind, if a female golfer has a scoring average under 80 in college, she is considered an excellent player. Remember, that is for Division I golf. There is also Division II, III and the NAIA. So you can see, scoring for females in college is very different than males. For the second year, the seniors were pleased to welcome Dick Hunt’s brother-in-law, Earl Land who was visiting from Oldsmar, Florida. From the results below, note that 31 of the 44 players were in the money at least once over the three days. This is a tribute to the careful pairings arranged by C.J. Dennis Pirages was the leader at the payoff trough with three dips. Congratulations to all the winners. Knowing all this, how do you go about getting your daughter noticed? Most high schools girls are not going to be recruited. If they are one of the better players in their area, college coaches will know of them by reputation. Golf is not like football or basketball where coaches travel to see players play. In golf, you have to go find the coach at the school you would like to attend. Pick a few schools that your daughter would first like to attend just for school and then contact the coach. Keep in mind the nongolf factors such as size, cost, reputation, etc. She should keep track of all her high school and junior tournaments and put them in a golf resume. Coaches want to see what kind of competition she has played and on what type of courses. Grades are also as important as the golf, so stress the academic achievements as well. Email the coach during her freshman or sophomore year and remember that the coach can’t actual recruit her until her junior year. Monday Winners: 1. Rick Hoffman (B) and Bill Sackville 2. Dennis Barnes and Bill Gordon 3. Rick Hoffman and Tom Fletcher 4. Paul Junghans and Dan Steinberg 5. Dennis Pirages and Jim Matthews 6. Jim Conley and Bob Barnett 7. Bill Cave and Earl Land B=Blind Draw At this point, the best thing to do for your daughter is to keep her playing. When girls turn 12 or 13 we lose a lot of players in all sports, not just golf. If you can keep her playing through high school then the college opportunities will take care of themselves. The sign-up sheet is posted in the men’s locker room. Chartwell Country Club is a must stop for the Manor seniors. For two reasons: One, it’s a great golf course and two they prepare the best lunch of all the tour stops. The course could not have been better. Fairways were perfect, rough not too tall, greens in perfect condition and traps perfect. What more could you want. High handicap seniors hit from the forward tees, and lower handicappers hit from the white tees. Not much difference except on two holes where the distance might have been fifty yards. Weather conditions? Perfect! Have we been lucky weatherwise? You bet! The annual Merrill Whittlesey senior member guest tournament will be held on August 10th. It is our premier senior event of the year. A flyer with details is in the mail and we hope to have a full field of 120 players. Invite your guests and sign-up in the pro shop early. Someone once called Leisure World, “Manor Club, East” since many of Manor’s members have retired to Leisure World. No more yards to be mowed, bushes clipped and pruned, tall trees to be cut down, and most importantly, no more snow to shovel. Sounds good to me! Glenn Johnson, Dick Hunt, Earl Land, C.J. Myers, Bill Gordon, Dennis Pirages, Doug Lord, Dan Steinberg Anyway, it was a great day to see some of our former Manor members and play a good game of golf with us then. Speaking of whom, Bob Purcells teamed with C.J. Myers and Denny Barnes and each won $32.00 first place money. Bob Diluchio played with Carey Kerby and each won $20.00 fifth place. They are very low pressure and lots of fun! • • • • As mentioned in last months newsletter, the Board of Governors has initiated a strategic and capital planning process to measure our membership’s satisfaction and help the Board determine what direction and what facility improvements the Club’s membership would like to see in the future. The Board is in the process of approving the Committee’s recommendations on how to best proceed with distributing a comprehensive survey which will be delivered to the members this month - in July. Bethesda will be hosting MCC on July 13. Woodmont has invited MCC to play on August 2. MCC will be travelling to Westwood on August 9. And finally, Springfield will host MCC on August 28. Maryland-Virginia Nine-Hole Team Match Association events— The Manor Women’s A and B team players have several matches scheduled for July and August: • On July 20, the MCC’s B Team will be playing at Congressional. • The A team will face Washington Golf on August 3. • Manor’s A team will host an event for all of the MD/VA teams at MCC on August 8, when they will play the back nine of the big course. • And finally, the B team will travel to International on August 16. The Strategic and Capital Planning Committee wants to ensure that every member is heard and has the opportunity to respond to the survey. The Committee has recommended and the Board has approved the distribution of the survey in both an online and written format for those who ask. One of the main goals of this Committee is to do everything we can to elicit the highest response rates possible for this survey and to collect as much feedback as we can from the membership. Once the survey is formally distributed, we ask all of you to help get the word out by mentioning the survey to all of your friends in the Club and encourage them to respond via either the online or written method. Written surveys will be made available at the front desk or will be mailed out to each of you at your request by calling the main number (301) 929 – 1700. We’ve had some beautiful crystal-clear days out there, so come on out to the Pitt and play! Please be looking for our letter announcing the distribution of the survey. Playing court 1, she was undefeated in both singles and doubles (with her sister Angela as her partner), and led her team to the league title!! In addition, she qualified to play in her first international tournament held on the grass in Philadelphia the second week of June. No Manor player has ever qualified for such an event before. We’re very proud of you Maria---keep up the hard work!! Mrs. June Patricia Houpert, beloved wife of Andre J. Houpert, a Community Retired member, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2006. Sitting quietly, or strolling around, undistracted by all the tasks we can't do now, ideas begin to gel. It's June, and the trees are fully leaved out and the days are long, the perfect time to appraise just how much sunlight each area of the garden really gets. I recently found a device I had been dreaming of for several years that actually calculates the accumulated light over twelve hours in any single spot you place it. It's called the SunCalc, available from the gardener's supply company, www.gardeners.com. The readout is reported as 'sun',' part-sun',' part-shade', or shade'. The instrument can then be re-set and re-used over and over again in as many different areas as you like. The fall catalogues are beginning to arrive, and they are enticing. A plant's light requirements, especially to bloom, not just survive, is one of the most important characteristics to consider in choosing next fall's purchases. So many of us have to deal with dappled shade, constantly shifting and very difficult to quantitate. Perhaps this new device will help. I hope to be mended and 'back out there' by fall, planting away. Interested in re-vitalizing garden club? Contact me at [email protected] or (301) 871-7573.
