The Value of a Deal:
The Story of Scottrade
Rodger Riney learned very early on that whether people
are looking to invest in a new shirt, a car or the stock
market, there is one thing everyone wants: a good deal. It
is Rodger’s long-held commitment to offering a good value
that has vaulted Scottrade from an idea to a national brand.
Rodger’s 40-year tenure working in the financial industry is
rooted in his childhood fascination with the stock market.
It all started when his grandparents gave him a few shares
of Bethlehem Steel stock as a gift, and as you might
recall in the 1950s and 1960s, the steel stocks did pretty
well. Rodger began reading the financial section of the
newspaper, charting the ups and downs of his very first
Scottrade is a financial services company, but numbers alone can’t tell the Scottrade story.
Our story is told through the dedication of our Founder, President and Chief Executive

investment. Those few shares sparked an interest in him
that would last a lifetime.
As he grew, so did his interest in the financial industry. In
the mid-1960s, Rodger spent his Christmas and summer
vacations home from college marking the front quote
board at Edward D. Jones & Co. After graduating from
the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in
civil engineering and an MBA in finance, he turned down

Highlights from 2010 –
Growth and Stability
Each year throughout our
30-year history, Scottrade
has continued to help
customers invest better.
Our company has grown steadily in all
facets of the business, from growing and
nurturing our customer base to maintaining
a culture for associates that revolves
around Rodger’s founding principles and
belief in treating people right.
pg. 05
During the past year, Scottrade’s
unwavering commitment to both
value and service has resulted in the
growth of our branch network, new
resources for our customers and
improved recognition of our brand. And
during a volatile economy when many
companies were forced to pull back,
Rodger and the senior leadership team
steered a nimble operation allowing for
our company to not only develop, but
grow our talent base.
Bricks and Clicks:
Celebrating
500 Branches
Our company was founded on customer service
and value, and it is these commitments that drive
the continued growth of our branch network.
The face-to-face customer service that Scottrade
associates provide in our branch network is
something that many of our competitors don’t
offer – and it is one of the things in which we are
most proud. Although Scottrade does not provide
advice, our associates are available to answer
account-related questions, provide customer
service and give tutorials on Scottrade’s online
trading tools.
After 30 years of steadily opening branch offices
in communities across the country, we opened
our 500 th branch office in December. This is a
milestone that is unmatched by any other online
investing firm.
“Opening our 500 th nationwide branch office shows
Scottrade’s commitment to serving customers in
the communities where they live and work,” said
Rodger Riney. “Our branch offices complement our
online services by providing in-person support and
education to help investors take control of their
investments and become better investors.”

driving awareness:
The Scottrade Brand
At its core, the Scottrade brand stands for value.
This past year, we updated our brand strategy to
ensure that we not only communicate the value we
offer our customers through low commissions and
fees, but also the support we provide to empower
the self-directed investor.
In order to broaden our advertising and marketing
reach, we implemented a new media strategy in 2010
that includes sports networks and print publications.
This, coupled with a new creative strategy and
integrated marketing efforts, led to a double-digit
increase in Scottrade’s brand awareness among
self-directed investors, according to brand-tracking
studies conducted to monitor the health of Scottrade’s
brand. Building awareness and consideration among
this investor segment is integral to the growth of our
customer base.

500 Local Branches
We’ve been asked many times why an online business
needs local branch offices. Sure, we know the Internet
is the most cost-effective method of delivering
investing services to individual investors. But, we also
know that investing is still a service-oriented business.
We believe that there are many investors who value
receiving that service locally, from a broker with whom
they have some rapport, instead of a distant call

National Service Center
When a customer has a service need, they don’t want to be
transferred to an outside organization for help – they want
help from knowledgeable people from the organization they
work with. Because of this, none of Scottrade’s service
centers are outsourced. Every Service Center associate is
employed directly with Scottrade, creating a true sense of
ownership for assisting clients.
The Service Center associates who currently
communicate with customers through Scottrade’s
online chat feature now also respond to inquiries
that come through Scottrade’s Facebook and
Twitter pages. In addition, the Public Relations team
continues to monitor and post the latest Scottrade
