INTRODUCTION
A WORD FROM THE
FINNISH PARTNERS
THIS IS TRULY one of the most exciting
times in Finnish audiovisual history. Global
attention has been focused on the Nordics
in recent years, and it is clear that the
industry in Finland is buzzing. In addition to
talent being mined from the Nordic region,
Finnish producers are more excited about
taking their work to a more international
degree than before.
Finnish documentaries have traditionally
travelled really well, but recent
developments show how our drama and
formats are also on the rise. Importantly,
Finland has also become an animation and
digital powerhouse in the last few years,
where downloads and viewer figures are
measured not in millions, but billions
worldwide.
FAVEX’s mission is to boost the internationalisation and growth of the Finnish
audiovisual industry. To do this, Focus on
the Nordics is a fantastic arena to showcase
the best of Finnish content as well as
help nearly 40 production companies to
network with global players.

MEDIA IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES , in
IT IS YLE’S MISSION to produce and develop
Finland in particular, are really buzzing at
the moment. High-quality content attracts
record audiences to traditional TV, while
the new ways of content consumption are
becoming more wide-spread and make
watching TV more social than ever. This is
fantastic for the consumers as they now
have access to a much wider range of
content and methods.
content of an international standard – in
drama, formats and web applications – and
take them to market internationally. We
aim, therefore, to export content and to do
our part to support the overall efforts of the
Finnish creative industry. This marries well
with Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE’s
role as a strong public service provider.
I firmly believe that the Nordic countries
are stronger together, as a united brand.
Content should be developed together
between high-quality production
companies, thus crossing international
borders.
Finland is a good place to observe the
digital revolution. The country has been
a pioneer in offering opportunities for the
digital development, from network-based
personal video recording services to TV
channels’ streaming services. In addition,
content providers build brilliant multimedia
solutions. In the media business, Finland is
currently the country to follow.

Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company
MTV is in the front line of digitalisation.
We want to provide our audiences with
contents that produce new experiences
in even more varied ways. We create new
methods for advertisers that ensure that
they can reach their targets. We want to
know our target groups, audiences and
customers, as well as we know our family
members. They are the reason we exist. For
them we create new experiences to enjoy.

Hooked
The drama series Hooked is a story about love, the biggest addiction there is.
This exciting and touching Nordic Noir drama series in ten episodes tells the story of a
drug squad investigator (played by Tommi Eronen) and his first love, an ex-addict (played
by Matleena Kuusniemi), who escaped abroad years ago and has now returned home, in
order to become a member of society again. She starts to work as an criminal informant
for the investigator. The director of the series is Marja Pyykkö.
The series will be aired on YLE TV2 and YLE Areena in primetime Autumn 2015. Olli Tola,
the commissioning editor of the series at YLE, says: “The Nordic Crime series have gained
huge interest and have become international success stories. From YLE, for example the
eco-crime series Tellus has been bought by several countries. The new series Hooked is
a Nordic crime series that places focus on the relationships and drama, and it is one of
the YLE series to receive international funding.”
The creators of the concept, the series head script writer Laura Suhonen and the executive
producer Roope Lehtinen were originally interested in the similarities between love and
addiction – both are strong forces that can make feelings push aside reason, forces
that you can never escape. “We wanted to create a modern drama that shows cops and
criminals, but the main issue is not who did it, it’s more how people survive in situations
where there is no right or wrong.”
The series is produced by Moskito Television Ltd, known for awarded quality top ranking
tv-series.

Nurses
Intensive hospital drama series revolving around four nurses.
Like good soldiers in a war-zone, hospital staff are expected to respect the chain of
command when dealing with life-or-death situations. But what happens when smug
doctors, arrogant surgeons and out-of-touch administrators make that easier said than
done?
Nurses deals with the professional and personal lives of four female colleagues who cope
in different ways with the challenges of life on the trauma ward. With determination,
strength and a wry sense of humor they complete the odd, challenging and amazing task
of saving lives in a system that sometimes seems designed to do exactly the opposite.

How far would you go to save your loved ones?
Replacements is a character-driven suspense drama series (12x45 min) set in a medical

emotions - joy and happiness, love and passion, sadness and loss - but the storytelling
is nonetheless light and optimistic.
Through the main characters, we take a peek into a hospital quite unlike anything we are
used to seeing in medical drama - as far as keeping our loved ones alive is concerned,
Replacements takes us further than anybody has even feared...

Think Tank
Think Tank is a weekly news panel comedy show about news, politics, business,
science and arts, with the most controversial and hottest tabloid queens and kings
starring in the show.
Think Tank is a show where the politically incorrect views meet politically correct topics.
The panel is lead by a journalist-like host, who lets the panelists shine. There are two
teams of panelists, with three panelists on each team.
The host asks the panelists questions and gives them tasks. No matter if the answer is
right or wrong, as long as it’s entertaining. In each episode, there are 5-6 different rounds
or tasks for the panelists. In its various rounds the show takes the panelists from
identifying people, putting countries on a map, and judging weekly headlines, to spotting
correlations, defining importance, and explaining difficult terms. The show is not only
entertaining, but also mind-blowing, and also raises the question: does general knowledge

Pop’n Roll
Pop’n Roll is a comedy panel show, where two competing teams, superstar guests,
exclusive music performances, emotion and improvisation, are brought together for
the love for music and pop culture.
The competition element of the show is not too serious: the host has the power to give
points to the teams however he/she chooses to. The two team captains are famous
musical or comedy personalities. In the teams, there are changing guest panelists. There
is an exclusive musical element in the show, with musicians performing live in the studio.
The panel has the teams identify singers/artists, perform a song without singing it, talk
about old iconic album covers and posters, guess a song based on an object related to it,
guess a song based on an exclusive live studio performance, and also re-write lyrics for
popular songs. All in all, Pop’n Roll makes great, spontaneous entertainment for all those

The Forgotten Music of Sibelius
This is the story of young Sibelius´s summers in the Finnish archipelago and of his
music that was lost for a century.
This is a story not known by many: the story of Sibelius’s visists to the Korpo islands in
southwestern Finland at the end of the 1880s. The beautiful music he composed there
remained unknown, as the scores were lost for a century. When Sibelius wrote his music
in Korpo he was a completely different person from the great granite-like colossus that
we have come to know from later photographs. He was young, enthusiastic and happy,
and his music from his Korpo era radiates the freshness of youth. Experts are
Dr. Folke Gräsbeck, world leading expert on Sibelius’s youth production, GM Andrew
Barnett and Prof. Glenda Dawn Goss.
