Global attention has been focused on the Nordics in recent years, and it is clear that the industry in Finland is buzzing. In addition to talent being mined from the Nordic region, Finnish producers are more excited about taking their work to a more international degree than before. Finnish documentaries have traditionally travelled really well, but recent developments show how our drama and formats are also on the rise. Importantly, Finland has also become an animation and digital powerhouse in the last few years, where downloads and viewer figures are measured not in millions, but billions worldwide. FAVEX’s mission is to boost the internationalisation and growth of the Finnish audiovisual industry. To do this, Focus on the Nordics is a fantastic arena to showcase the best of Finnish content as well as help nearly 40 production companies to network with global players. Johanna Karppinen CEO FAVEX - Finnish Film & Audiovisual Export 6 MEDIA IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES , in IT IS YLE’S MISSION to produce and develop Finland in particular, are really buzzing at the moment. High-quality content attracts record audiences to traditional TV, while the new ways of content consumption are becoming more wide-spread and make watching TV more social than ever. This is fantastic for the consumers as they now have access to a much wider range of content and methods. content of an international standard – in drama, formats and web applications – and take them to market internationally. We aim, therefore, to export content and to do our part to support the overall efforts of the Finnish creative industry. This marries well with Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE’s role as a strong public service provider. I firmly believe that the Nordic countries are stronger together, as a united brand. Content should be developed together between high-quality production companies, thus crossing international borders. Finland is a good place to observe the digital revolution. The country has been a pioneer in offering opportunities for the digital development, from network-based personal video recording services to TV channels’ streaming services. In addition, content providers build brilliant multimedia solutions. In the media business, Finland is currently the country to follow. Ville Vilén Creative Director Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company MTV is in the front line of digitalisation. We want to provide our audiences with contents that produce new experiences in even more varied ways. We create new methods for advertisers that ensure that they can reach their targets. We want to know our target groups, audiences and customers, as well as we know our family members. They are the reason we exist. For them we create new experiences to enjoy. Heikki Rotko CEO, MTV Finland 7 Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company celebrates THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF Jean Sibelius Hooked The drama series Hooked is a story about love, the biggest addiction there is. This exciting and touching Nordic Noir drama series in ten episodes tells the story of a drug squad investigator (played by Tommi Eronen) and his first love, an ex-addict (played by Matleena Kuusniemi), who escaped abroad years ago and has now returned home, in order to become a member of society again. She starts to work as an criminal informant for the investigator. The director of the series is Marja Pyykkö. The series will be aired on YLE TV2 and YLE Areena in primetime Autumn 2015. Olli Tola, the commissioning editor of the series at YLE, says: “The Nordic Crime series have gained huge interest and have become international success stories. From YLE, for example the eco-crime series Tellus has been bought by several countries. The new series Hooked is a Nordic crime series that places focus on the relationships and drama, and it is one of the YLE series to receive international funding.” The creators of the concept, the series head script writer Laura Suhonen and the executive producer Roope Lehtinen were originally interested in the similarities between love and addiction – both are strong forces that can make feelings push aside reason, forces that you can never escape. “We wanted to create a modern drama that shows cops and criminals, but the main issue is not who did it, it’s more how people survive in situations where there is no right or wrong.” The series is produced by Moskito Television Ltd, known for awarded quality top ranking tv-series. This is a story not known by many: the story of Sibelius’s visists to the Korpo islands in southwestern Finland at the end of the 1880s. The beautiful music he composed there remained unknown, as the scores were lost for a century. When Sibelius wrote his music in Korpo he was a completely different person from the great granite-like colossus that we have come to know from later photographs. He was young, enthusiastic and happy, and his music from his Korpo era radiates the freshness of youth. Experts are Dr. Folke Gräsbeck, world leading expert on Sibelius’s youth production, GM Andrew Barnett and Prof. Glenda Dawn Goss. Produced by: Douglas Productions Genre: Documentary Length: 58 min.
