Toronto musician Steve Singh returns with the official
release of his much anticipated follow up to his 2003
release I Will Not Break Your Heart, with Heavy Metal
Sunset, due October 28 on Unemployment Records.
Singh has made fans of many notable musicians and
industry figures including BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris who
heralded Singh saying, “I found myself sort of sucked into
it (the album). Lovely lyrics too and by all accounts, he’s
wonderful live.” As well as New York Dolls legend, Sami Yaffa who called Heavy Metal Sunset
“An amazing record” after hearing it in its infancy in early 2008.
The album, described by solo artist, Luke Doucet, as sounding as “if Stevie Wonder did a
cameo on Pet Sounds” was performed in its entirety, recorded, mixed and produced by the
creatively ambitious, Steve Singh. You can sample the stop motion video for the single “Wash
My Hair” on Steve’s website, details below. The video which was directed and produced by
Singh, consists of more than 3000 still photographs all which Singh captured over a one month
period while creating the album. The video while featured on MySpace Canada’s music page
had received over 3000 views.
In this day and age, where it has become easier for solo artists to simply recreate albums with a
series of triggered samples, Singh has a unique outlook: “creating music in the studio is like
cooking in a kitchen supplied with everything you could possibly think of.” Says Singh, “Playing
live to me is like the challenge of making a meal when you're camping in the middle of nowhere.
Every good song should be able to be played on one instrument. I firmly believe in the challenge
of digging deep into the song and really sucking out the essence. The song should change
every time and still retain its potency."
