The Depot is a popular ice skating venue, and offers student discounts on Thursdays.
It's fun, it's romantic, and it’s warm in the winter. Named one of the top places in North
America to ice skate by Fodor's Travel, USA Today and MSNBC, The Depot Rink is an
historic Downtown Minneapolis train shed that now houses a modern-day, indoor skating
rink with floor-to-ceiling glass walls providing a great view of the city skyline.


The Parade is next door to the Walker Art Center and Sculpture Garden.
The Parade Ice Garden offers premier indoor ice skating to the public year round. Parade
has three different ice rinks open to individuals of all ages, skills and interest levels: a 96’ x
56’ studio rink, and two full size rinks at 200’ x 85’ feet each. It features a large concession
area, lockers and a comfortable location to change into skates.

The Walker Art Center is the premier modern art museum in Minnesota and is also the
creative force behind the Internet Cat Video Film Festival. The Walker is free on the first
Saturday of each month. The theme for First Free Saturday on January 5th is “From
Morocco to the Moon.”

Housed in a striking stainless steel and brick building designed by architect Frank Gehry, the
Weisman Art Museum offers an educational and friendly museum experience. The
museum’s collection features early twentieth-century American artists, such as Georgia
O’Keeffe and Marsden Hartley, as well as a diverse selection of ceramics and contemporary
art. A teaching museum for the University of Minnesota and the community, the Weisman
provides a fresh, engaging arts experience through an array of programs and a changing

The Fine Line Music Café is located in the heart of the Warehouse District in downtown
Minneapolis. The club is in the main level of the Consortium building, which was built in
1907 and is considered a historic site. The Fine Line Music Café celebrated its Grand
Opening in November of 1987. Ruth Whitney was the original owner and worked for two
years developing her vision of a first-class nightclub. Whitney envisioned a club that could
present top quality local and national musical acts seven nights a week. She created the club
with two tiered cabaret style seating, which she found to be the best way to enhance the
musical experience.

Como Park is a wonderful place to go for both indoor and outdoor activities. For outdoor
enthusiasts, the park offers cross country skiing and the Como Zoo, which has a newly
renovated polar bear exhibit. If you are looking for something a little more tropical, the
conservatory has multiple warm, humid rooms, and an adorable sloth that hangs out in the
Tropical Encounters room
Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is operated by the Saint Paul Parks and Recreation
Department. The zoo features a seal island, a large cat exhibit, a variety of aquatic life,
primates, birds, African hoofed animals and a world class polar bear exhibit. The Marjorie
McNeely Conservatory is a half-acre indoor and outdoor facility with a number of different
wings dedicated to a variety of plant life including bonsai trees, ferns, orchids and seasonal
flowers.


The Hill House is right across the street from the Cathedral of St. Paul, and just down the
road from the History Center and the State Capitol.

Rugged stone, massive scale, fine detail and ingenious mechanical systems recall the
powerful presence of James J. Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway. Guides lead tours
that help you imagine family and servant life in the Gilded Age mansion, the setting of the

For more than 30 years, Minnesota Children's Museum has embedded the research on play,

The history center is a fun way to learn about Minnesota history. During the conference,
there will be exhibits on prohibition, Minnesota’s Greatest Generation, weather, grains, and
immigration stories. This is a fun visit to pair with the State Capitol and the JJ Hill house,
which both nearby.
The Minnesota History Center is an interactive museum with both permanent and changing
exhibits, the Minnesota History Center hosts concerts, lectures, family days and other special
events throughout the year. The building is also home to the Minnesota Historical Society
library and archives, a research destination for school children, family historians and
academics.


The Ordway is across the street from Rice Park. A visit would be fun to combine with ice
skating. During the conference, Broadway Songbook: George Gershwin will be playing.
The Ordway, recognized as one of the U.S.’s leading not-for-profit performing arts centers,
is home to a wide variety of performances throughout the year that encompass the finest in
American musical theater, world music, dance, and vocal artists on its Music Theater stage.


If you find yourself in downtown St. Paul, ice skating at Rice Park is a must. The park is
across the street from the historic Landmark Center and the Ordway. It is free to skate, and
skate rental is only $2. On January 5th, there will be Downton on Ice. Dress in period- style
clothing and watch the season premier of Downton Abbey on a large jumbotron
overlooking the rink.


The Science Museum is full of hands-on exhibits and also features an Imax theater. During
the conference, there will be a special exhibit and Imax film about the Maya. The exhibit has
lots of neat language displays. There may also be a Social Science event, which is a monthly
21+ after hours event that offers drinks and special programming for adults. Keep an eye
out for the 2014 schedule to be released soon. Consider pairing a visit to the Science
Museum with ice skating at Rice Park.
The Science Museum's 70,000 square feet of exhibition space includes a 10,000-squarefoot temporary exhibit gallery and five permanent galleries covering the topics of
paleontology, physical science and technology, the human body, peoples and cultures of the
Mississippi River, and the museum's collections. The Mississippi River flows just outside the

windows of the museum and past the museum's ten acres of outdoor exhibits and
programming space.


The Minnesota state capitol offers free tours daily. If guided tours aren’t your thing, there are
also self-guided tour options in 20+ languages. Consider combining a visit to the Capitol
with a visit to the Minnesota Historical Society.
Designed by Cass Gilbert, the Minnesota State Capitol is considered an architectural
masterpiece. Visitors can explore the House, Senate and Supreme Court chambers, see the
legislature in action, visit the gold-leafed Quadriga on the roof when weather allows, stop in
the restored Rathskeller Café and walk the Capitol Mall.


named for St. Paul’s most famous madame, whose brothel was located where the Science
