NTGM (Needlework & Textile Guild of Michigan)
MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose shall MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose
shall be to foster the art of needlework, with special emphasis on work done with a
needle with an eye & related disciplines, with an eye to encourage high standards
of design & technique & to bring together members who shall learn, share, teach &
participate to the fullest extent in this endeavor.
From the President:
We have about one more month before our annual June potluck luncheon. For
new members, the end-of-the-year luncheon is our big soiree, where we host a potluck (Board members bring desserts and members bring other food – details to
come) and a Creativity Show where we show everyone what we have created over
the year. It is always a fun event for the group.
Somehow, we neglected to form a committee to manage the luncheon this
year. Kathy Shuller will be the Creativity Show Coordinator, but we need volunteers
to be Food Coordinator, Table Decorations (usually small flowers), and a Show
and Tell Coordinator, and anything else I am forgetting. Sue Mathes has very
good notes on the amounts of drinks and other items the Guild purchases. Please
consider volunteering, even if it just to set up or clean up.
Speaking of volunteering, I will take a poll of Board Members before the June
luncheon to see who would like to continue volunteering, and who would like to try
something else. In June, we will hold our annual Board of Directors elections.
Please consider giving us some of your time and skills if you have not previously
done so.

There is plenty of parking, and our direct entrance is toward the rear of the
church. It is a slightly longer walk if you enter at the rear, but there are no steps.
If you go in the front door, the church office is to the right, and they can direct
you.

LECTURE:
Felt LOOMED Fabric, Felt Like You’ve Never Seen Before
Judy Petrovich, will talk about her passion for sewing & introduction to fiber, conventional felting, and
how it's morphed into her FeltLOOM product. She will have garments (in a variety of sizes) for the audience
to try on. plus home decor and wall hangings that to compliment Kathy's workshop. Most of the items will be

About the Artist:
“I aspire to create truly wearable art that's unique and elegant,
but flattering to all, regardless of size.”
I've spent the majority of my working career in the technical illustration field of the
automotive industry. The precision that type of drawing required was something I truly
enjoyed, and it carried through in my love for sewing and tailoring over the years. My
appreciation for structure, in both work and hobby, was tempered with a driving need to be on the cusp of
creativity, always looking for that "extra something" to make my creations truly different. That need drove
me to explore anything I could find ... knitting, crocheting, crewel, needlepoint hand and machine embroidery, and countless other techniques, that I could incorporate to make my work different.
About seven years ago I discovered alpacas, a small animal raised for it's fiber, and was enamored
with it's luxurious feel (handle). I was determined to find a way to create alpaca fabric that I could sew into
spectacular garments. That desire led me to a newly designed dry felting machine called the FeltLOOM
that could produce non-woven fabric as yardage. It sounded like a solution, but I had "perceived" nonwoven material, or felt, to be of low quality, but that couldn't be further from the truth. To prove that point to
myself, I entered the 2009 Michigan Make It With Wool Contest, and created the non- woven fabric that I
used for my sewing entry. Much to my surprise, I won the Adult division with my sewing skills, but the
unique, hand-made fabric had totally impressed the judges!
My FeltLOOM and I now create custom non-woven fabric. By blending fiber from my alpaca herd with
a spectrum of silks, wools, cottons and bamboo, I achieve quality material of a consistent weight and
unlimited designs that will amaze you. I've taken my sewing and need to be creative to the next level ....
from raw fiber to the finished project!
he FeltLOOM sparks creativity and new ideas in my mind, every single day and I love to share it, as
well as my passion for sewing, with others. The excitement's contagious!!!

Fine Art Felting
Create art pieces and embellish garments with your needle felting embellishing machine or needle punch.
It’s fun and adds another dimension to your creative work.
In this workshop you will create an art piece that you can hang on the wall, use as a journal cover, make
into a purse, or attach to your clothing. You will learn the basics of needle felting, and then it’s up to your
imagination. The sky is the limit!
SUPPLIES needed for class:






Piece of felt or wool for backing – between 12x12 to 20x16
Roving in colors of your choice, (don’t overlook the colors that make you cringe)
Felt and/or wool – scraps large and small
Yarns, threads, trims
Embellishing machine (with instruction booklet and accessories) or hand needle punch with pad
Extra needles if you have them
This process works when the barbs of the needles connect and melt the fibers together.
Keep that in mind when selecting things to bring.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NTGM BOARD POSITIONS:
All Board and Committee positions are voluntary. Being on the Board or a committee is a great way to get
involved and help shape our Guild. There are many ways to help, and all are appreciated. Below are the positions that we have. There are 2 positions that we know we need to fill for next year, but if anyone is interested in any position, please let me know (Debra Gash 248 601-3104 [email protected]).
We definitely need volunteers for Whistlestop and Seminar Day (marked in red at the bottom).
More detailed descriptions for each job are available. Feel free to contact any of the current job-holders with
questions.
NTGM President – currently Debra Gash
Provide general leadership to group, run Guild meetings and Board meetings, fill in for others as needed.
Program Chair –

(2014-2015) Carol Buszek & Margaret Kluka
Plan, contract for, and finalize programs for the following year. This requires contacting prospective speakers
and teachers for workshops, obtaining samples and program descriptions for publicity, managing workshop
enrollment, and being the Guild point of contact with speakers and teachers.
Treasurer – currently Joan Koelsch
Keep accurate records of Guild funds, collect monies from Flea Market, Membership, and Programs; pay
speakers and teachers, pay venue rent
Recording Secretary – currently Brenda Walker
Take minutes at Board meetings or Guild meetings where votes are taken
Corresponding Secretary – currently MaryAnn Sherry
Send out cards to members with illnesses or other issues, thank you notes to speakers and teachers.

Design one day workshop for Guild members that ideally combines charity work and opportunity for learning
new techniques. Contract with Guild member teachers and manage enrollment; procure supplies if neces-

Goals and Policies:
1. The goal of the NTGM library is to provide all members with free access to books and other materials on
a wide range of fiber art-related topics. As with any public library, we need to be sure books stay in circulation by ensuring that they are returned in a timely fashion. Please be considerate of other members and try to
return your materials by the next meeting. You must be a current member to check out any materials.
2. If you check out books and cannot come to the next month’s meeting, please find someone to
bring them in (check your NTGM directory) or mail them, so that other members may have access as
well. Many people did a fabulous job of this last year. We realize that last minute things come up that may
prevent you from attending a meeting (illnesses, etc.), but people do wait for a book to come back in.
3. Due to the popularity of the library, we must limit the number of materials checked out by a member to a
maximum of 5 per month
4. If something bad happens to your book (the P.O. loses it, the dog eats it, you spilled ice cream over it at
the beach, etc.), please expect to replace it for the Guild. If you have friends who are not members who
would like to use this resource, please encourage them to join. YOU are responsible for any items checked
out in your name.
5. Finally, we will continue to make reminder calls the Monday before meetings, if it is helpful.
As always, if you have a particular item you’d like to see in the library, please let us know. Email me ---I can’t
remember items mentioned at the meetings!

"It's Funny to be Famous" Zehnder's Restaurant Frankenmuth, MI
Emma Seabrooke is a certified Palmer/ Pletsch pant and fit instructor. She trained
with a French couturier for several years and took many fashion design courses in college. Emma loves sewing with knits and has worked with patterns and fabrics to perfect the best styles for all sizes, but especially the wellendowed ladies. She has traveled and taught all across the
country and on TV. Her goal is to have eve-ryone achieve
clothing that looks and fits great. She carries patterns, notions
and fabrics that apply to her classes.
You've seen Kaye Wood Strip on her PBS-TV shows, Strip Quilting and Kaye's Quilting Friends, for over 40 seasons. NOW watch her Strip her quilts in person. Kaye, a
self- proclaimed "Quilt Engineer," will take you step-by-step through her techniques for
cutting, sewing and pressing. Kaye brings lots of her quilts and shares with you step-by
-step exactly how to make these quilts. She began sewing in the 60's with the Bishop
Method of Clothing Construction, which helped to form the basis for lots of her techniques. Her seminars are lots of fun and educational—you will learn how easy and how
much fun quilting can be with Kaye's original techniques that assure suc-cess and inspire creativity. Kaye will also be our banquet speaker on Tuesday night featuring
"It's Funny to be Famous" happenings along Kaye's quilting road. Kaye is in great
demand for her humorous and entertaining talks.
