Our first events for the year at the Jamison Southern Cross Club have been very successful. The “Jugalug Stringband”, a new one for a lot of our members, proved very popular and we plan to have them back next year. Our second concert with the Black Mountain & Bridge City Jazz Band is always popular and despite other events happening at the same time, we had our largest ever attendance at Jamison. Due to circumstances, I was unable to attend the Jules Boult concert at the Harmonie German Club, a joint event with the Canberra Blues Society. By all reports, while attendance was low, people really enjoyed the afternoon. On Sunday the 10th of April we will welcome the Keira Jazz Band back to our Sundays at Jamison and we are certain this will be another entertaining event for our Club members and also, too, the other people who are not members of our Club but who are now attending Jamison as they gradually find the jazz we present a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Sadly we have said farewell to two of our members during the last month (see note below). Our sympathy goes out to relatives and friends at this time. Another death which has come to our notice is that of Viv Carter, known to a lot of us both as a musician and someone who supported both the Convention and lots of festivals including our own St Valentines festivals. His conversation was always interesting, especially if you could get him to talk about circuses. One of the characters of the jazz scene who will be greatly missed. I look forward to seeing you all at the events we have planned for the remainder of the year. Cheers for now, Margaret Margaret Moriarty Phone: 02 6286 3936 Email: [email protected] Vale members Pat Abbot & Daphne Broers-Freeman & others. For those members not previously advised via email, we sadly advise of the passing of 2 gracious ladies in recent weeks. Pat Abbot was a CJC member and Phone Tree volunteer for many years and a great supporter of the CJC. Daphne Broers-Freeman was a more recent member and together with husband Tom, always attended events when their health allowed, particularly our bus trips. Our thoughts go to member Ray Louis, Pat’s companion of many years, and to Tom Broers who has lost his “guardian angel”. Further afield, one of the more colourful characters on the jazz scene, Murrarundi drummer Viv Carter, passed away on 24 March, aged 80. Viv often played with Sydney’s Bridge City Jazz Band and the band’s blog spot refers to Viv as “a ‘mountain man’ for sure”. Hugh (Hughie) De Rosayro (1939 - 2016). Melbourne trombonist Hughie Rosayro migrated to Australia from Ceylon in 1965. He played with the Yarra Yarra Jazz Band for many years and was leader of the popular Niteowls. He accompanied Geoff Bull to Japan on several tours. Jeffrey (Jeff) Hawes (1937 -2016). Another successful trombonist, Jeff started playing jazz in Melbourne at age 18 and eventually moved to Sydney where he became a founder-member of Noel Crow's Jazzmen. Editorial/Production Team Editor: Linda Wiese ([email protected]) Distribution: Barbara Gleeson NEXT MEETING OF THE CJC Tue 12 April 2016, 5.00 pm in Community Room 2 at Canberra Southern Cross Club, Woden. All members are welcome to attend. Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter April – May 2016 3 UPCOMING CJC FUNCTIONS Sunday 10 April – we saw them back in 2013 and they drew one of our largest crowds at Jamison! The Keira Jazz Band is back for what promises to be another afternoon of great trad jazz. Many thanks to Jim Lole for organising this return appearance for us. Featuring band leader Tony Madden on tuba, Jim Lole on alto sax, Tony Thomas on trumpet, Jim Styles on banjo & Ian Hill on drums. Another great line-up of musicians for your enjoyment!! Refer to page 4. Sunday 15 May – the annual Great Jazz Safari to the Southern Highlands with our friends from the Sydney & Illawarra jazz clubs. The Sydney Club is host this year and the SJC has decided to return to the Golf Club at Mittagong. Details page 5. Sunday 26 June – it’s back to Southern Cross Club Jamison for an afternoon of great piano. This piano gig is so popular around town we couldn’t miss the opportunity for a return appearance at Jamison. Take 2 pianos and 4 piano players and they happen to be Wayne Kelly, John Black, Leo Joseph and Ali Penney and you have a fantastic mix of jazz, swing and boogie. Check out page 6. A Sunday in July? – possibly a Mystery Trip? This event is still a mystery as none of us has come up with any ideas yet! Suggestions welcome! Sunday 14 August – we are back at Southern Cross Jamison with member Ken Nosworthy and his great quartet Dr Jawbone & the Restless Souls. Ken’s daughter Lorelle on vocals & sax adds a wonderful dimension to the band which was very well received on the last occasion they played for us. Tuesday 16 August – CJC AGM. Sunday 23 October – Southern Cross Jamison with our trad locals Tony Thomas, Ron Cook, Garry Owen & Evan Smith. This was previously advertised for 16 Oct but Tony got a better offer for the day! Sunday 13 November – our big band annual event will this year feature “ConneXion” playing for us at the Harmonie German Club. Sunday 4 December – CJC Christmas Party. MARK THIS DATE IN THE DIARY NOW!! Galapagos Duck at Southern Cross Club, Woden Thursday 21 July | 8pm Galapagos Duck began in the late 1960's playing during a winter season at the skiing resort “The Kosciusko Chalet” at Charlottes Pass. After such humble beginnings, the band’s reputation steadily grew during the 1970's as the house band at the emerging jazz night club “The Basement” in Circular Quay which, today, has become a Sydney icon. The ‘Duck’ is now one of the best known Jazz bands in Australia. Although band members have changed over time, the direction of the band has always remained the same – to create a jazz oriented performance experience that can be enjoyed by everybody. The current line-up is Will Sargisson, piano; Willy Qua, sax; John Conley, bass; Richard Booth, reeds; Rodney Ford, drums. “The Galapagos Duck of today is nothing less than a powerhouse”. SHOW ONLY: $29 plus booking fee | Book at the Club or online via Ticketek Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter April – May 2016 4 JAZZ AT JAMISON with the “Keira Jazz Band” SUNDAY, 10 APRIL 2016 – 1.00pm to 4.00pm Another very popular trad combo makes a return appearance! For lovers of trad jazz, this special band is a must see!! Locals musicians Jim Lole on sax, Tony Thomas on trumpet and Jim Styles on banjo, will be joined by ‘almost-local’ Ian Hill on drums and from the Illawarra, band leader and tuba player, Tony Madden. Another great line-up for your enjoyment!!! We will be gathering for lunch in the adjacent Bistro from 12.30 for those who like to do lunch. YOUR SUPPORT OF LIVE JAZZ IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED Canberra Southern Cross Club, cnr Catchpole & Bowman Streets, Macquarie (For the information of members & guests) Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter April – May 2016 5 The Great Jazz Safari to the Southern Highlands is on again… Sunday 15 May 2016 Highlands Golf Club, Mittagong MITTAGONG This annual get-together with the Sydney & Illawarra jazz clubs is a highlight event on the jazz calendar! Yes, we are heading back to Mittagong. Host club Sydney prefers the Highlands Golf Club for the larger menu choice and a less cramped space than our trial venue last year at the Robertson Bowling Club. We will miss the great stage at Robertson but the SJC is hoping to organise a portable stage so those of us at the back of the room can see the band! You can expect 3 hours of great jazz with the Al Davey Jazz Band featuring Al Davey, trumpet & trombone; Peter Locke, keys; Graham Hilgendorf, drums; Ben Jones, saxophone; and a bass player TBA. Coach departs 9:00am from Canberra Southern Cross Club Club,, Woden and 9:20am from Southwell Park (alongside Yowani Golf Club). Coach will be leaving Mittagong at 4:00pm sharp. Coach: $25, which includes a $5 entry fee. Friends welcome: $30. You can meet us there if you like from around 11.30am but you must let us know you will be there for catering & seating purposes. The $5 entry fee payable at the door assists with band costs. A variety of meals will be available for purchase. Bookings close Sunday 8 May. Call Linda on 6291 9345 (or email her if you prefer) to arrange for a booking and payment or you can book & pay via Direct Deposit to the CJC bank account. We know some of our members prefer to pay on the day so just let us know. Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter April – May 2016 8 What’s been happening Our first two gigs for Jazz at Jamison this year have attracted great crowds. Unfortunately, audience numbers for the Jules Boult gig at the Harmonie German Club were less than expected and we sustained a small loss. Firstly, though, the Jugalug Stringband in February was very interesting and most entertaining! It was fun to hear and see their collection of vintage and unique instruments being played so well and they have a wide range of music in their repertoire. Leader Stewart Binsted was suffering a broken wrist but he had an able replacement in the form of guitarist Tony Burkeys (Stewart also plays the kazoo so maybe his injury was a blessing in disguise!). Stan Valacos on bass had double-booked so Dave Clayton stood in for him. The Black Mountain & Bridge City Jazz Band drew our largest crowd yet at Jamison – some 120! It was a great afternoon of trad delivered by some great musos. Trombonist Mike Hallam filled in for John Bates who was on holidays and it was great to see Mike back in Canberra. Band leader Dennis Quinlan sent along an email on behalf of the band and Mike Hallam thanking the CJC for the gig and commenting “we enjoyed playing for the Canberra JC yesterday...the combination of the two groups always makes a nice 7 piece jazz band”. Pianist and singer Jules Boult & the Capital Redeemers were very well received! Our collaborative event with the Canberra Blues Society at the Harmonie German Club was held on a particularly busy weekend in Canberra. It’s many thanks to the CJC members who managed to support the event. It was a very polished and entertaining performance from Jules and his supporting musicians from the now disbanded Moochers Inc who were very much on top of their game. Whether you had a jazz or blues bent, the music was toe-tapping from start to finish. It was a great afternoon!
