PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy Fall!
We are now half way into the season and it always reminds me of what I can
let go of and what may need to fall away in my life. Yet it feels like there is
more to take on as Fall brings with it the beginning of the holiday season
and many new projects!
We continue to work on behalf of members and stakeholders so we can unite
the Alliance Community bringing hope, solutions, and inspiration through
our Newsletters, Tele-Class Series, and Website.
Our October Tele-Class guest speakers featured Julia Ross, MA, MFT, Scott
N. Gillet, LCSW and Dr. Alex Zaphiris, MD, MS, for our Success Story
Speaker Series. They are experts in the field of Opiate Recovery, a topic of
critical importance because so many are dying of opiate addiction and
overdose. The good news is we have a community working towards real
solutions for this rising epidemic.
Our Tele-Classes are live so members can be a part of the conversation and
participate. Also, our Tele-Class calls are archived, so members can access
previous tele-class recordings as often as desired. If you are not a member of
the Alliance Community, consider joining us! The quality of our speakers,
alone, is worth the cost of membership!
May you let go of what no longer serves you and may we all unite together to
bring peace, joy and recovery back to our homes and communities.

EDITOR’S NOTE
Apparently*we*are*a*na,on*in*pain.*This*issue*of*the*Alliance*newsle6er*looks*at*the*tsunami*
of*opiate*prescrip,ons*across*America*today*and*the*inevitable*rise*in*opiate*overdoses.**
The*US*popula,on*in*1991*was*252.98*million.*In*2013*it*was*316.5*million.*That*is*an*
increase*in*popula,on*of*25%.*During*that*same*,me*the*number*of*prescrip,ons*for*
addic,ve*opiate*pain*relievers*like*hydrocodone*and*oxycodone*rose*from*76*million*in*1991*
to*about*207*million*in*2013,*an*increase*of*172%.*
And*although*the*USA*makes*up*less*than*5%*of*the*world’s*popula,on,*we*consume*99%*of*
its*hydrocodone,*the*opiate*in*Vicodin*and*Norco.*
What*is*the*solu,on*to*this*epidemic*need*to*dull*our*senses?*Should*we*put*endorphinR
boos,ng*DRphenylalanine*in*the*drinking*water*instead*of*fluoride?*It*turns*out*even*without*
changes*that*drama,c*something*can*be*done.*One*medical*doctor*at*the*right*place*with*the*
right*authority*turned*‘scrip,ng*as*usual*on*its*head*and*since*2011*under*her*leadership*her*
regional*network*of*Veterans*Administra,on*medical*facili,es*in*Manha6an*and*the*Bronx,*
New*York,*have*had*the*lowest*rate*of*opiate*prescrip,ons*of*any*VA*hospital*in*the*en,re*
country.**Her*name*is*Heidi*Klingbeil,*MD*and*as*chief*of*physical*medicine*and*rehabilita,on*
she*changed*the*guidelines*for*pain*management*beginning*with*the*obvious*first*step*of*
diagnosing*the*problem.**
Can*you*believe*it*took*Dr.*Klingbeil*to*suggest*her*colleagues*actually*figure*out*what*was*
causing*the*pain*before*prescribing*a*narco,c?*And*instead*of*immediately*pulling*out*a*

my*home*between*my*husband*and*myself*I*found*four*opiate*prescrip,ons,*153*tablets*s,ll*
unused*of*hydrocodone*plus*acetaminophen,*hydromorphone,*and*oxycodone*da,ng*back*
three*years.*They*are*worth*over*$500*on*the*street.*For*many*addicts*addic,on*starts*with*

Dr.?Zaphiris:*We*live*in*a*society*where*any*pain*or*distress*needs*to*be*medicated,*
where*people*feel*like*there*is*something*wrong*with*them*that*needs*fixing,*where*
shame*keeps*us*silent*and*suffering.**We*are*a*society*that*numbs*out*and*distracts*
itself*with*television,*video*games*and*social*media.**Prescrip,on*painkillers*are*just*a*
more*extreme*coping*mechanism.**The*real*challenge*is*to*learn*how*to*deal*with*
difficulty,*pain,*and*insecurity*and*then*to*teach*our*kids*the*same.*
Dr.?Cass:*We’re*also*more*anxious*and*depressed*due*to*our*toxic*environment*
including*food,*water,*electromagne,c*frequencies,*and*chemicals*in*products*we*use.*
In*addi,on,*where*we*used*to*have*minor*procedures*and*were*told*to*take*an*aspirin*
if*needed,*now*doctors*are*prescribing*strong*opiates*for*everything*and*con,nuing*to*

Dr.?Zaphiris:*Some*pa,ents*do*wonderfully*with*a*healthy*high*protein*low*carb/sugar*
diet*along*with*the*right*combina,on*of*nutri,onal*supplements,*neuroRnutrients*and*
behavioral*therapy.**I*am*grateful*to*Julia*Ross*for*her*clarity*in*teaching*the*neuroR
nutrient*model.**It's*been*very*helpful*for*many*pa,ents*to*help*jumpRstart*their*
recovery.*In*my*clinical*prac,ce*however,*I*have*found*that*this*approach*doesn't*work*
for*everyone.**Like*a*diabe,c*pa,ent*who*needs*insulin,*some*opiate*addic,on*
pa,ents*need*a*replacement*medica,on*to*slow*down*the*train*and*let*the*dust*se6le*
so*they*can*get*back*on*track.*
My*philosophy*is*"it's*not*either*or,*it's*both*and*more."**We*are*all*unique.*I*use*all*
the*tools*necessary*to*help*each*individual*pa,ent*including:*neuroRnutrients,*

NEW WEBSITE COMING SOON
In September 2015, the Alliance announced the
upcoming launch of a brand new website with a
new look.
Since this time we have been hard at work. Making
the transition to our new website, while largely a
success, has brought with it some challenges as
well as opportunities. Yet we know it affords us the
chance to grow as an organization.
The Alliance’s vision is to provide a richer user experience with more features and
individual choices. Some of the website’s new features will include; dynamic dropdown navigation, new membership payment system, quick links, and a rotating
banner users can click on to navigate to the appropriate page for added information.

The*original*research*on*brain*chemistry*and*nutri,on*
performed*by*Kenneth*Blum,*PhD*during*the*past*47*years*has*
been*both*wind*and*compass*for*the*founders*of*our*Alliance*as*
they*set*sail*on*their*own*clinical*adventures*in*neuronutri,on*
as*well*as*for*the*en,re*world,*inspiring*a*blossoming*of*the*
field*of*neuropsychopharmacology*and*what*Blum*calls*

effects*of*the*trauma*and*PTSD*which*affect*many*of*our*
addicted*clients*I*have*been*rereading*the*highly*enlightening*
book*The*Body*Bears*the*Burden,*by*Robert*C.*Scaer,*MD*
(Routledge,*2014).*Scaer*is*a*pioneer*researcher*in*how*trauma*
gets*lodged*in*the*nervous*system.*In*this*book*he*explores*the*
significant*role*endorphin*release*plays*in*the*freeze*response*
of*trauma,*healthy*infan,le*bonding,*trauma,c*bonding*with*
abusive*caretakers*which*leads*to*trauma*bonding*in*later*life*
(such*as*in*Domes,c*Violence),*and*the*compulsive*nature*of*
Scaer*postulates*that*the*anxiety,*restlessness,*and*insomnia*that*plague*some*extreme*
athletes*between*episodes*of*ac,vity*might*be*endorphin*withdrawal,*as*opposed*to*

Clinical Case from the Practice of Alex Zaphiris, MD
42*year*old*male*a6orney*with*a*6*month*history*of*Oxycon,n*addic,on.**He*is*using*80*to*
100*mg*per*day*as*much*as*200R300*mg*in*past.**He*tried*quiyng*on*his*own*over*the*past*4*
months*and*wasn’t*able*to.*He*comes*in*reques,ng*Suboxone.**He*is*married*with*2*small*
children*and*his*wife*is*unaware.**His*medical*history*is*notable*for*Anxiety*and*Depression.**
He*currently*takes*Paxil*10mg*per*day*as*well*as*the*Oxycon,n.**He*has*a*history*of*cocaine*
abuse*in*past*and*went*through*12*Step*recovery.*He*was*sober*from*2004R2008*and*did*well*
un,l*6*months*ago*when*he*started*using*opiates.**He*is*a*light*smoker*and*has*2*drinks*a*day.*
His*ini,al*exam*was*normal*with*a*borderline*blood*pressure*of*140/100.**He*was*started*on*
Suboxone*8*mg*/day.***He*was*seen*monthly*for*follow*up.**His*induc,on*went*well*and*he*
reported*no*cravings*to*use*on*Suboxone.*He*started*seeing*a*therapist*to*discuss*his*
challenges*with*addic,on.**He*also*reported*taking*alprazolam*0.25*mg*every*other*day*for*
sleep*and*that*he*runs*once*a*week*for*stress*management.**He*was*mo,vated*to*taper*down*
and*within*2*months*he*was*on*Suboxone*2*mg*/*day.***He*also*stopped*Paxil*10*mg*1*month*
ago*and*had*mild*withdrawal*symptoms*which*resolved*quickly.**He*reported*taking*
alprazolam*daily*for*the*last*week.*He*was*started*on*several*amino*acids*to*help*with*being*
off*Paxil,*to*limit*use*of*alprazolam*and*help*him*taper*off*Suboxone.**
Kavinace*1R3*tabs*at*bed,me*(aka*Phenibut,*similar*to*GABA)*
Somnolin*1R3*tabs*at*bed,me*(5HTP,*Theanine*with*B6,*B12*and*Folate)*
He*also*reported*drinking*2*cups*of*coffee*in*AM*with*a*diet*coke*in*a^ernoon*and*that*he*has*
been*chewing*nico,ne*gum*more*with*tapering.*
The*next*month*he*was*started*on*DLPA*2*tabs*in*the*morning*to*help*build*dopamine*and*
endorphins*and*limit*caffeine*usage.*He*was*encouraged*to*increase*cardio*to*every*other*
day.*
By*the*next*month,*he*was*down*to*Suboxone*1.25*mg*/*day.**However,*he*was*having*some*
difficulty*with*insomnia*and*anxiety*and*wanted*to*go*back*on*an*SSRI.**Since*he*had*sexual*
side*effects*previously*on*Paxil,*he*was*started*on*Celexa*instead,*along*with*the*following:**

Nutri,onally,*he*generally*eats*fairly*well.*He*was*encouraged*to*eat*a*high*protein*breakfast*
and*limit*simple*sugars.**By*the*next*month,*he*was*down*to*Suboxone*0.5*mg/*day*and*he*
stopped*taking*it*shortly*therea^er*with*amino*acid*support.*Suboxone*tapering*went*well.**
He*had*no*withdrawal*and*felt*fine.*However,*within*a*week*or*so*things*unraveled.**He*
started*taking*opiates*again,*40R100*mg*/day*and*using*cocaine.**He*started*again*on*
Suboxone*on*his*own,*using*some*he*had*le^*over*to*try*and*get*off*the*Oxycon,n.*Suboxone*
comes*packaged*as*a*sublingual*film*(like*a*Listerine*breath*strip)*that*dissolves*under*the*
tongue.*His*wife*found*his*Suboxone*film*on*New*Year’s*Day*and*he*was*forced*to*disclose*his*
usage*to*her.**He*started*going*to*NA*mee,ngs*again.*
We*restarted*Suboxone*8/2*mg*film*and*discussed*next*steps*with*his*therapist.**We*
recommended*an*intensive*out*pa,ent*program*(IOP)*for*him*to*help*get*back*on*track.*We*
found*a*program*covered*by*his*insurance*and*he*joined*a*3Rmonth*IOP.**He*did*very*well.**He*
shi^ed*his*life*focus*and*decided*to*stay*home*with*his*kids*for*a*while*un,l*he*finds*a*job*
that*will*allow*him*to*con,nue*his*recovery*safely.**He*did*an*addi,onal*3*months*of*the*IOP*
program,*for*6*months*total*and*slowly*tapered*off*Suboxone*a*second*,me.**He*has*stayed*
on*Celexa*and*knows*how*to*take*addi,onal*amino*acids*as*needed*during*,mes*of*stress.**
He*is*doing*very*well*off*all*opiates.***
Clinical?Comments:?
The*first*,me*he*went*on*Suboxone*he*was*in*rush*to*get*off*of*it*and*didn’t*want*to*tell*his*
wife.**He*wanted*to*pretend*his*addic,on*to*Oxycon,n*hadn’t*happened*and*wanted*to*go*
back*to*his*life*as*quickly*as*possible.**That*didn’t*work.**His*wife*finding*his*medica,on*was*
actually*the*best*thing*that*could*have*happened.**It*forced*him*to*confront*his*addic,on*and*
deal*with*it.**The*IOP*gave*him*the*skills*and*tools*he*needed*and*the*amino*acids*gave*him*
the*nutrients*his*brain*needed*too.*As*I*did*here,*I*usually*start*with*GABA*and*serotonin*
support*to*help*with*evening*anxiety*and*sleep*and*then*add*dopamine*support*aminos*in*
the*morning*to*help*with*energy*and*focus.*He*is*a*beau,ful*example*of*my*“it’s*not*either*or,*
it’s*both*and*more”*approach.**He*is*at*risk*of*relapse*but*he*knows*the*warning*signs,*his*
wife*is*on*board,*and*he’s*not*going*back*to*his*high*stress*job*near*the*Tenderloin.**Most*
importantly,*he*realized*addic,on*is*a*vulnerability*he*will*have*for*the*rest*of*his*life*and*he*
has*to*take*ac,ons*every*day*to*promote*his*recovery.**

Not*everyone*who*dies*from*drug*use*has*overdosed.*Both*the*tragic*deaths*of*actors*Heath*
Ledger*and*Philip*Seymour*Hoffman*were*not*related*to*taking*too*much*of*one*drug*but*
rather*were*the*result*of*a*lethal*combina,on*of*different*drugs.*This*sad*consequence*of*
poly*drug*use*is*so*common*it*has*a*name:*lethal*polydrug/polypharmacy*intoxica,on*

certain*other*drugs,*can*be*the*fatal*last*straw.***
Philip*Seymour*Hoffman*also*died*accidentally*from*a*mixed*drug*intoxica,on,*including*
