Lake Königssee Surrounded by towering rock cliffs, the lake - emerald green and silent - is set in one of the most impressive landscapes in Germany. It is perhaps for this reason that so many visitors come to Königssee year after year. This narrow, fjord-like lake is 8 kms long (5 miles), up to 1 km wide (3/4 mile) and lies 602 meters (2,000ft) above sea level. With a maximum depth of 190 meters (650 ft), Lake Koenigssee retains its cold temperature even during the hottest time of the year. Leave the noise and hectic pace on land behind you and glide across the smooth surface in one of Lake Königssee’s electric boats. The union of water, mountains and sky touches the heart and soul. Magical, romantic, relaxing, interesting and even educational - the fleet of boats on Lake Königssee invites you to experience an unforgettable and magical evening, the “Königssee Serenade”, with a brass band concert and a several-course dinner served at the historic inn located on the peninsula of St. Bartholomew. Here you will experience the fisherman’s handiwork in a fish-themed gastronomical evening! Let yourself be transported into another enchanted world! The water and surrounding area are protected by the Environmental Protection Agency. Lake Thumsee located just outside of Bad Reichenhall, is a crystal-clear swimming lake with a lovely groomed and grassy beach for sunbathers. Also charming is the walking path that completely circumvents the lake. With its swimming beach, playground, public restrooms and cost-free sunbathing area, Abtsdorfer Lake near Laufen is definitely an ideal Lakes and Sights 4|5 Lakes and Sights: Watery wonders! destination for families and everyone alike. Swimmers will be happy to know that this is one of the warmest lakes in Bavaria. Surrounded by grandiose and imposing peaks, lying at the foot of the Reiteralpe mountain range, you’ll find Lake Hintersee near Ramsau, which has drawn many writers and painters throughout the centuries. The surrounding area is fairytale-like and the footpath from Ramsau through the Zauberwald or magic forest is the best way to reach this lovely area on foot. Follow the pretty path around the lake or rent a paddle-boat or rowboat and glide across the glistening Lake Funtensee gical conditions, this area is always making headlines as the coldest spot in Germany! Surprising, though, is the fact that the tree line in this area becomes more sparse and the trees get smaller the closer one gets to the lake, with trees growing larger again above the lake! surface of this lake, which has been used as a backdrop for many films. By contrast to the warm swimming lakes, the temperature of Lake Funtensee (1,633m / 5,358ft) located in the southern part of Germany’s only Alpine National Park, remains rather chilly! Wimbachklamm Gorge At the entrance of an aweinspiring high valley at the foot of the Watzmann mountain, lies the Wimbachklamm: a geologically impressive attraction as well as a splendid act of nature. Hiking, gazing, staring in awe: Gorges and slot-canyons such as Aschauerklamm at Schneizlreuth reveal fantastic perspectives that you won’t soon forget. Idyllic Almbachklamm near Marktschellenberg with its impressive waterfalls is one of the most beautiful gorges in Bavaria. At the entrance of the Almbachklamm gorge you’ll find the oldest marble ball mill in Germany. Ever since 1683 marble rocks have been ground down and polished into gleaming marble balls! Almbachklamm Everywhere in the Berchtesgadener Land mills and dams can be seen, such as Röthelbachklause near Bad Reichenhall – one of the very oldest dams – or the Theresienklause above Almbachklamm gorge. These historical monuments show us the industry and technology of earlier times. Garnering the power of water enabled settlers to mine salt, grind grain by means of millstones, as well as generating power or logging in areas too hard to reach without the transport of water. Many mills and dams are now being lovingly restored by various organizations and honorary volunteers. These are ideal excursions for the young and old alike who, today, are still fascinated with this narrow link between technology and nature. The hike from Weissbach to Schneizlreuth through Weissbachschlucht is definitely worthwhile, though recommended only in dry weather. Over bridges and under rock cliffs – the wild Weissbach River follows the path all the way to the bottom. For those in the mood for a gorge adventure, the Speiktal valley and Speikschlucht gorge near Bayerisch Gmain await you! Climbing up ladders and stairs cut out of the rock – one arrives at the Speikbachbett. Here the valley ends in an invincible waterfall. Schellenberg Ice Cave For those in search of gorges and dams, sturdy shoes are a prerequisite. If you are interested in checking out the ice caves (1,500m / 4,920ft) on the Untersberg mountain, not only will you need hiking boots but warm clothing as well, because the deeper into Germany’s largest ice caves you go the colder it gets! www.eishoehle.net In spite of global warming, the Blaueisgletscher – Blue Ice Glacier – still exists today, thanks to its north-facing location. After reaching the Blaueishütte – Blue Ice Hut – glacier enthusiasts can continue hiking up to this unique world of ice! Gorges, Canyons and Dams 6|7 Breathtaking Heights and Depths Memorable Experiences! The Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) (1,834m / 6,017ft) – nor at the time, the Eagle’s Nest was spared being blown up. A historic viewpoint high above the Berchtesgaden area: Panoramic views of up to 200 kilometers can be enjoyed by those visiting the Eagle’s Nest. Today the Eagle’s Nest is open to the public and can be seen in its original form. Since 1960 it has been in the hands of the Berchtesgaden tourist board and leased out as a mountain top restaurant. Eagle’s Nest Its construction ordered by Martin Bormann, the so-called Eagle’s Nest teahouse was offered to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday with the aim of using it for representation purposes for official guests. The challenging construction of the Eagle’s Nest was completed in just 13 months including the road, Germany’s highest. The road from Obersalzberg leading up to the Eagle’s Nest upper bus parking area is a unique feat of engineering seen nowhere else in the world. The great difference in elevation is reached with only one hairpin bend, thereby traversing the steep northwest face of the Kehlstein mountain twice. In 1952 the road was closed to the public and the special mountain buses were put into operation for the transportation of guests to this unique destination. Hitler himself seldom used the Eagle’s Nest, finding the excursion up to the top too unnerving due to his fear of heights. After the War, thanks to Mr. Jacob, the local goverIn the setting sun... From the Eagle’s Nest upper parking area, a hand blasted tunnel takes you 124 meters (406ft) through the mountainside to an ornate elevator lined with shiny brass. In just 41 seconds you are transported another 124 meters up through the mountain and into the building itself. In 1960 the Bavarian State created a trust fund through which the Eagle’s Nest is administrated. The proceeds are used for charitable purposes. 39 Berchtesgaden - Königssee Tourist Office Koenigsseer Str. 2 83471 Berchtesgaden Tel: 08652/967-0 www.kehlsteinhaus.info Eagle’s Nest Tel: 08652/2969 Middle of May until the end of October. from the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point including lift Adults 13,50 euro Children (4 to 12 yrs.) 7,50 euro RVO bus # 9549 from the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point to the top RVO bus # 9538 from the Berchtesgaden train station to the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point on foot from the Ofneralm (1,5 to 2 hours) or from the Scharitzkehl parking area (2,5 to 3 hours) Berchtesgaden’s Salt Mines (Salzbergwerk) At a time when Berchtesgaden was an independent principality, salt was a valuable commodity treated like gold and therefore few people were allowed into the mines. Today things have changed! Experience this underground realm for yourself where the “white gold” is hidden. These mines have been in continuous operation since 1517! A tour through the Salt Mines is fun for the whole family: Slides and smiles dressed in traditional miners attire, a special train takes you 650 meters through a tunnel and into a gigantic underground hall. Your guide, an experienced miner, will explain all of the ins and outs of mountain salt mining Down a gleaming wooden slide the journey takes you deeper into the depths of the mine. For those who prefer to walk, a convenient footpath can be taken instead. Glide along a glittering underground salt lake on a small barge onto other shores accompanied by a mystical light and sound show. Here you will see the famous bronze pump built by Georg von Reichenbach, which was used to transport the brine up and across the mountains for processing. Stepping into a funicular, one is transported up into another part of the mine where the tunnels are adorned with marble plaques. From here the mountain train awaits to transport you back out into the light of day. Tip: Take advantage of the combined ticket and visit not only the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines but the Alte Saline – Old Salt Works - in Bad Reichenhall at a special discounted price! Experience deep relaxation and healing in an underground salt grotto. Located In a special chamber deep in the Salt Mines, a therapeutic curative hall awaits those who want to feel the healing properties of salt for the body and soul. 28 Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden Bergwerkstrasse 83 83471 Berchtesgaden Tel: 08652/6002-0 www.salzwelt.de May 1st – Oct. 15th 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. * Oct. 16th – April 30th 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. * (* last tour) Bergschänke Tel: 08652/657366 RVO bus # 9540 or 9548 from the Berchtesgaden train station Underground brine lake Breathtaking Heights and Depths 8|9 Cable-cars and Alpine Roads Up you go! The history of the road construction is also interesting: The construction began in 1938 under the same authority as the German Alpine Road – of which the road was to be an extension. The Rossfeldstrasse would allow the toll-paying visitors to overlook the high security area of the Obersalzberg (the former 3rd Reich southern headquarters) which, after 1938, became the second seat of power after Berlin, an area that had been closed off to the public since 1937. Great fun for the whole family! Eagle’s Nest Road (Kehlsteinstrasse) The Eagle’s Nest road is considered a unique masterpiece of architecture and a feat of engineering. The great difference in elevation (740m / 2,400ft) from Obersalzberg to the Eagle’s Nest upper parking area is bridged via a ‘perched’ road featuring only one hairpin curve switching back along the steep north wall of the Kehlstein mountain. tunnels with a total length of 277 meters. In 1952 the Eagle’s Nest road was closed to normal traffic and a special bus service began. Because the snow and frost of winter loosens stones on the rock face above the road, the cliffs are “cleaned” each year in spring to insure a safe road for the tourist season. In fact there have been no accidents on the road since the bus service was started in 1952! Impressive as well is the history of the building of the road. In as little as 13 months it was blasted out of solid rock. The Eagle’s Nest road is 6.5 kilometers long, 4 meters wide and has five Cable-cars and Alpine Roads 12|13 Health and Wellbeing Spoil yourself! The town has numerous interesting sights to discover such as the historic Rococo town center with its colorful facades, its abbey church and its royal palace. Berchtesgaden’s cozy cafes and restaurants are a great place to relax after having explored the array of shops the town has to offer. For those who would like to experience Berchtesgaden by night – The “night watchman’s” historical tour of the city by night is the way to see Berchtesgaden from a slightly different perspective! www.berchtesgaden.de Historic Berchtesgaden King Ludwig I once declared that Anger was the “most beautiful” village in his kingdom. The landmark of this town is its village square with its column of the Virgin Mary erected in 1884. Radiant, the gold-clad patron saint of Bavaria towers into the sky. In Anger the old traditions have not changed much throughout the centuries with their folk dances, Schuhplattler (thigh slapping dances) and native dresses which are still today very much part of daily life. www.anger.de What a town! The transport of salt or ‘white gold’ on the Salzach and Saalach Rivers brought the town of Laufen riches and recognition. The filigree border-spanning bridge between Laufen and Oberndorf links Germany to Austria. It was built between 1902 and 1903 across the Salzach, the river bordering both countries since Anger’s Village square The bridge at Laufen 1816. As one of the few remaining Jugenstil (Art Nouveau) bridges in Germany, it is now protected by the historical preservation society. The old Rathaus or town hall in Laufen dates back to the 15th century. Take in the magnificent Gothic arch on the first floor. On the second floor have a look at the beautifully restored baroque Alter Rathaussaal (town hall) which has been called Rottmayrsaal since 2004. This hall displays the impressive Rottmayr painting ‘Allegorie der Astronomie und Geschichtswissenschaft’ from 1710. www.stadtlaufen.de A city on the go! Are you in the mood for a shopping spree? Today, Bad Reichenhall is a spa and convention town which combines modern life and tradition with flair! It is an alpine wellness town of the highest ranking as well: thanks to its well protected natural environment, health and well being are a major focus. More and more people are discovering the positive effects and stimulating energy of Bad Reichenhall’s alpine brine. Enjoy this fountain of youth for the body, spirit and soul which comes from deep under the Alps! Bad Reichenhall’s old salt works The Alte Saline (Old Salt Works), built in 1834, ranks as a major European historical industrial monument. The main focal point is the spring house and spring chapel constructed in neo-Romanesque style. Here nothing has changed for over 150 years – including its giant water wheels which have been turning continuously ever since. The Salt Museum in the Old Salt Works gives you an idea of how the extraction of salt takes place. In the past, weaker concentrations of brine flowed over blackthorn bushes to increase the proportion of salt. Today the same process can be viewed at the Gradierwerk in the Kurgarten which is used as an alpine brine inhalatorium for those wanting to breathe in the healthy salt-charged air! The Old Royal Convention Hall (Altes Königliches Kurhaus) has been completely restored to its original splendor and impresses everyone with its fine architecture. It is used now as a modern convention center as well as for special exhibits.
