2015 CALPAL Leadership Academy
Leadership skills aren’t innate; we learn these skills. With these skills, youth become
empowered; empowered to lead, participate, collaborate, and try things never before
thought possible. Leadership skills allow youth to make positive impacts in the lives of
others; within their communities, families and schools. The Leadership skills learned are
practically applied as the Teen Leadership Program (TLC) participants plan and implement
monthly community service projects that benefit their communities. SAL currently serves
approximately 75 youth through the TLC
program throughout San Mateo County.
In March 2015, the TLC participants will be
attending the annual CALPAL Youth
Leadership Academy conference, where they
will meet other TLC participants all over
California for a weekend of learning and
practicing leadership skills.

COMMUNITY POLICING
The San Mateo County/ Redwood City annual toy and book drive was an
enormous success, serving over 750 families county wide! Events included:
Stuff the Bus, two toy bagging events, gift pick up parties at various locations
throughout the county, a wrapping party at Red Morton in Redwood City, and
toy deliveries by Santa in Redwood City and North Fair
Oaks.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated and
participated. With your generosity, the Sheriff’s Office and
collaborating agencies made this holiday season extra
special for many families in our community.

CARON (Community Alliance to
Revitalize Our Neighborhoods) in the
Community Policing Unit for the past
three years and has done an amazing job
coordinating the biggest community
academies the Sheriff’s Office has ever
hosted. He will be greatly missed and we
wish him the best of luck at his new
assignment as a Sheriff’s Office

SAL is excited to announce we have two new STEM programs launching this month. Scien<fic innova<ons are vitally important in this age of informa<on. To succeed in this highly technological society, youth need to strengthen their STEM skills to exceed what was previously expected of past genera<ons. With the lack of gender and ethnic diversity in STEM careers and educa<onal programs, SAL strives to inspire interest in the sciences to today’s youth. Rocket Fuel, Inc. is sponsoring a group of 25 young girls, who will be transported to and from the Rocket Fuel campus every week for exci<ng classes, including a women’s leadership component. Our second program is in collabora<on with Learning Tech, where we have an experienced STEM professional leading SAL youth in exci<ng hands-­‐on experiences with coding, robo<cs and even a 3D printer! SAL Clean Team & Green Team
The SAL Clean Team and Green Team begin the New Year with fresh goals to keeping our community clean. You can find them twice a month on Saturdays in the North Fair Oaks neighborhoods picking up trash, logging and reporDng instances of graffiD and illegal dumping, and disseminaDng flyers with Dps and resources to doing your part in the beauDficaDon of our community. Each Clean Team member mentors a younger Green Team member and helps to educate them on the importance of a clean environment. This program builds a strong mentor-­‐mentee relaDonship between the youth while focusing on geJng more involved in our communiDes. Plus so much more! New recreational soccer teams are
being formed at Fair Oaks, Garfield
and Connect. We are looking for
motivated and engaging Sheriff’s
personnel to lead these youth in the
fundamentals and teamwork the

SAL Basketball is beginning for 7th and 8th
grade boys and girls this January, with the
first game in February. We have eleven
teams participating this year from Clifford,
Garfield and Fair Oaks.

Deputy Javier Acosta took the Winter 2014
Girls Volleyball team to volunteer at the
Fair Oaks Community Center to serve the
seniors a Thanksgiving lunch.
The 2015 Champions Winter League, an outdoor winter soccer league, is presented by SMC STAR and partner clubs EvoluDon FC, Burlingame SC, SAL Redwood City, & San Bruno Lowen. The season runs for six weeks throughout January and beginning of February with approximately 850 parDcipants. SMC Star youth parDcipate in compeDDve game play and are required to maintain good grades, healthy choices and community service. All STAR and Redwood City Training Center parDcipants are monitored by the SAL Healthy Kids Coordinator Stephanie Fisher. Stephanie offers healthy kids seminars, wellness check-­‐ups and tutoring for those in need. For more information visit the SMC Star website at smcstar.org
