The Zayed Future Energy Prize Awards
Ceremony took place on 19 January 2015 at
the beginning of Abu Dhabi Sustainability
Week (ADSW). The event was attended by His
Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin
Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi
and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE
Armed Forces; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and
Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of
Dubai; His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi,
President of Egypt; His Excellency Ólafur
Ragnar Grímsson, President of Iceland and
Chair of the Zayed Future Energy Prize Jury;
and several Heads of State, Foreign Dignitaries,
Government Officials and members of the
Royal Family.
The Prize honoured nine winners for their
innovative achievements in advancing renewable
energy and sustainability worldwide.
The winners, across five categories, are

approach to deploying solar electricity to
rural villages in Kenya and Uganda, delivering
access to affordable energy to rural communities
that need it most. To date, the company has
sold more than 100,000 solar home systems.

Corporation category for a long-standing
commitment to social, economic and

Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable
Energy Forum (WISER) 20 January 2015
On 20 January, the Prize, in partnership with
Masdar, hosted a pioneering forum, titled
‘Women in Sustainability, Environment and
Renewable Energy (WISER)’, uniting local and
international women to acknowledge, educate
and inspire their peers to be active leaders in
sustainability. The forum assembled leading
women in the fields of engineering, media,
politics and science to drive solutions that
address the challenges of energy, water
security and climate risk.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize conducted two
educational workshops on the sidelines of
ADSW. Led by local and international experts
in academia and industry, the workshops
aimed to foster an awareness of environmental
stewardship, making sustainability an
integral part of the students’ everyday lives.
The first workshop, titled ‘Inspiring Future
Energy Innovators’, gave students an
opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills
to develop successful project proposals that will
promote renewable energy and sustainability in
an academic environment.

In a world where 1.3 billion people lack
access to energy, it is crucial to break down
the barriers preventing communities from
accessing an essential resource. To this end,
the Zayed Future Energy Prize united energy
access experts on the sidelines of ADSW for a
panel discussion on deploying renewable
energy and increasing energy access in the
developing world.
Taking part in the discussion was Richenda
Van Leeuwen, Executive Director, Energy and
Climate, Energy Access Initiative team for the
UN Foundation and member of the Zayed
Future Energy Prize Selection Committee; Ami
Valdemoro, COO of Liter of Light – the 2015
NPO category winner, Dr. Jeremy Leggett,
Founder and Chairman of SolarAid – a 2015
NPO category finalist; and Eng. Rashid Al
Dhaheri, the Head of UAE Egypt Task Force
and member of the Zayed Future Energy
Prize Review Committee.

‘How Business Innovation is Transforming
the Energy Industry’, was held as part of the
World Future Energy Summit, during ADSW.
The panel gathered some of the Prize’s most
innovative 2015 winners and finalists to offer
insights into business solutions that are
making clean, sustainable energy available to
more customers around the world.
The panellists included, Jesse Moore, Managing
Director and Co-Founder of M-KOPA Solar –
the 2015 SME category winner; Marc De
Groote, CEO of EcoNation – a 2014 and 2015
SME finalist; Simon Trace, CEO of Practical
Action – a 2014 and 2015 NPO category
finalist; and Surabhi Rajagopal, Principal
Analyst for SELCO India – also an SME
category finalist in both 2014 and 2015.
In December, the Prize launched a
nationwide campaign on social media to
raise awareness of water and energy
conservation.
#YTurnItOff got going with a competition on
8 December, 2014, inviting young students
from across the UAE to post creative
15-second videos on Instagram that
suggested simple methods of saving water
or energy at home or school. By conserving
resources, young people play an important
role in reinforcing the UAE’s position as a
responsible energy leader.
The competition winners joined the winners
and finalists of the Global High Schools
category at ADSW, as young ambassadors of
the UAE.

The five-month submission phase of the 8th
edition of the Prize opened at 12.00 midnight
Gulf Standard Time on 20 January 2015. We
now invite innovators from across the world
to seek recognition for demonstrable solutions to the global challenges of climate
change, energy security and the environment.
In seven years of rewarding clean energy
leaders, past winners of the Prize are having
a positive impact on the future of our climate,
environment and energy security, touching a
hundred million lives in the process. And,
through the Global High Schools category,
the Prize is empowering youth to take the
lead in securing a sustainable future, not just
for themselves, but for generations to come.

The Prize accepts submissions across four of
our five categories: Large Corporation, Small
and Medium Enterprise, Non-Profit Organisation and Global High Schools. Nominations
are admitted for the Lifetime Achievement
Award. Last year, the Zayed Future Energy
Prize received a record number of entries
since its launch in 2008. A total of 1,111 submissions and nominations arrived from 84
countries.
